I had one guy working as a temp-to-hire who seemed to be doing ok, though he thought pretty highly of his skills that were only just average. We had a process and length-of-service requirement before we could offer him a full-time job, but he would have made the cut based on his overall output. One day, he sent an email to me saying he would not be returning from lunch and that his badge was on his computer. He told the temp agency that we just didn't get his "vibe" (whatever that means) so he wanted a different placement. She told him to find a different temp company. Dummy could have waited a few more weeks and would have been a full-time employee with us.

I am in the job market and I have been told by 3 off-shore recruiters so far that I am too old (I am 43) and should retire and let younger people take the opportunity. And these were recruiters working with major tech and financial companies.

Maybe it’s regional? When I waited tables in Boston during college I encountered lots of horrible Indian men. They treated waitstaff like shit. However, the Indians I have encountered in California and Texas are super nice and very educated.

They recruiters do not have to follow US law and can discriminate as they please. One of the first things they want to know is your year of birth, the year you graduated college and your legal status in the US. No recruiter in the US is legally allowed to ask those questions. I’ve worked for and with and some great Indian friends and they love to make fun of other Indians. They get it that there is something there among a lot of them that doesn’t blend in well. Like the Chinese, they are a volume oriented society as opposed to quality. A lot of their output can be pretty shoddy. It’s absolute hell to work for an off shore tech company.
