His nihilism was fascinating and elicited some kind of protective instinct in his fans. You could blame his demise on many things, but the root cause was mental illness. He suffered terrible depression and some kind of personality disorder. Maybe BPD? Anyone else want to speculate?

Anyway, he was not a martyr for our sexual sins. He was a quite bright, self hating, doomed person who, unlike many others like him, had a flare for communicating his turmoil. That blog is what made him memorable.

He was always really entertaining and upfront when he would appear on Derek and Romaine’s show. He had a true “fuck you” attitude that wasn’t a put on. He always felt like the real deal.

Did he really? I mean, think about it. He won the gene pool. He was a gorgeous guy, took the gift the universe gave him, and pumped it up artificially to become more gorgeous, (at least in a lot of people’s eyes). He achieved a kind of fame, made the most of it. I’m sure he made a lot of money for awhile, (which he probably mostly blew on bad investments and drugs). He ate the best food, had the hottest sex with the hottest people in the world, and in excess. Everything in excess! It takes away your appreciation. Too much of a good thing! It makes sense that an over-abundance of happiness would lead to an over-abundance of depression. He experienced the highest of highs that most of us don’t get within miles of. He died young and beautiful. And because of that, he will always be remembered as young and beautiful. I don’t see that as tragic.

I don’t think I’m a person who lacks compassion. I’m envious but not jealous of people like Rhodes. But why is it tragic? Or any more tragic than any other person’s death. Because he achieved fame being beautiful and letting people watch him have sex?

I feel sad that he was troubled, especially since the cards were in his favor, looks wise. Mental illness is tough.

That said he would have been even worse off ugly with mental illness.

We were friends in NYC and he was one of the most captivating men I've ever met. He was a really sweet guy underneath all the bravado, but I think he felt like his life was like a ride he couldn't get off. He felt like everyone wanted to use him for something. He had a boyfriend at the time of his death, who I think was more into dating "Erik" than "James."

Honestly, one of the best moments we had was a dramatic morning over a whole lot of drinks where he was actually sobbing for a few minutes, and I told him he owned me $100 for the porn movies he just ruined, because I can't jack it to a guy I saw cry. I remember he thought that was really funny.
