Wonder Years was cancelled because of sexual harassment lawsuit against Fred Savage and Jason Hervey

Alley Mills, who played the mom in The Wonder Years, tells Yahoo that the show was cancelled due to a sexual harassment lawsuit against her TV children Fred Savage and Jason Hervey. The Los Angeles Times and Variety did report on the suit in 1993, the year the show was cancelled, though unclear whether it’s the reason the show was cancelled. [Note: We were unable to find court records online.]

According to the LA Times, 31-year-old costume designer Monique Long filed a sexual harassment suit against Savage (then 16) and Hervey (then 20), claiming that “they verbally and physically harassed her daily” and Savage “constantly held her hand” and “asked her to have an affair.”

Mills rejects the allegations as a “big joke” partly because Savage is the “most wonderful human being that ever walked the face of the earth.”

Yet ABC gave his brother a show for 7 years.

by Anonymousreply 1January 28, 2018 2:09 AM

I always hated that show - thank you for reminding me of it.

by Anonymousreply 2January 28, 2018 2:22 AM

Show was canceled because it was running out of steam after 7 years. Rating were also down.

Harrassment charges may have been a minor factor in ABC's decision to cancel.

At 16 years old, if Savage did sexually harass the costume designer, it was behavior he learned from watching others, like Jason Hervey.

by Anonymousreply 3January 28, 2018 2:23 AM

Right before joining the cast of [italic]Diff'rent Strokes[/italic] in its final season, Jason played a bratty child actor in the sappy nuns-and-orphans movie from [italic]Pee-Wee's Big Adventure[/italic]. I guess he wasn't acting then.

R2 you seem fun

by Anonymousreply 5January 28, 2018 2:27 AM

[quote][R2] you seem fun

I am - this show wasn't.

by Anonymousreply 6January 28, 2018 2:42 AM

r6 The great thing about TV shows -- if you don't like them, you don't have to watch them.

by Anonymousreply 7January 28, 2018 3:13 AM

Isn't Jason Hervey best friends with Republican icon Scott Baio? I wonder if he's a deplorable, too.

by Anonymousreply 8January 28, 2018 3:22 AM

[quote][R6] The great thing about TV shows -- if you don't like them, you don't have to watch them.

& the worst thing about being young is - aspects of popular culture are in your face - most people I knew liked this piece of crap, so I'd end up looking at it all the time - what was I supposed to do, walk round the block until it ended? Hide in the bathroom?

by Anonymousreply 9January 28, 2018 4:08 AM

R9. Why are you still here?

by Anonymousreply 10January 28, 2018 4:12 AM

Because I'm interested in what people are saying about this shitfest.

by Anonymousreply 11January 28, 2018 4:17 AM

Alley Mills told this story trying to DEFEND him as a friend, but all she accomplished was putting his name out there for another #MeToo.

by Anonymousreply 12January 28, 2018 4:18 AM

Alley Mills is sort of crazy. She wanted the series finale to be all about her character going back to college, and she told people, "We don;t want any more about Kevin and Winnie--that's all played out, anyway."

by Anonymousreply 13January 28, 2018 4:21 AM

Keep'em coming...the movement is almost buried.

by Anonymousreply 14January 28, 2018 4:22 AM

I wouldn't hate being sexually harassed by Dan Lauria

by Anonymousreply 15January 28, 2018 4:36 AM

R10 exactly. Personally I liked the wonder years. The sixties is fascinating to me.

by Anonymousreply 16January 28, 2018 4:42 AM

R10 has apparently decided only Wonder Years fans should be allowed to post here.

by Anonymousreply 17January 28, 2018 4:47 AM

I remember hearing about the lawsuit and not being surprised much by the brother, because he always seemed gross, but also wondering where Savage's parents were.

Um, R3, the show was on for 5 years. Not 7.

by Anonymousreply 21January 28, 2018 5:04 AM

They need to reboot the wonder years. I love the theme song.

by Anonymousreply 22January 28, 2018 5:08 AM

Licensing all of the expensive songs from the 60s took forever and that's why the series took so long to be released on DVD.

by Anonymousreply 23January 28, 2018 5:11 AM

Olivia D'Abo looks microcephalic next to those people.

by Anonymousreply 24January 28, 2018 5:16 AM

They should reboot it and set it in the 80s.

by Anonymousreply 25January 28, 2018 5:17 AM

I liked the show. mostly for the sixties stuff but the syrupy narration and the exaggerated naivety of the characters were pretty annoying.

by Anonymousreply 26January 28, 2018 5:21 AM

R25 There's already a shitload of crappy coming of age TV shows set in the 80s. We don't need anymore.

by Anonymousreply 27January 28, 2018 5:24 AM

My So-called Life reminded me of a modern Wonder Years. They used the same main character voice over, which was not as common back then but is used all the time now on TV shows.

by Anonymousreply 28January 28, 2018 5:25 AM

r25 They already did, it's called "The Goldbergs" and aside from weak link Adam, it's pretty good.

by Anonymousreply 29January 28, 2018 5:56 AM

Freaks and Geeks is an accurate early 80s depiction.

Look elsewhere. THIS didn't capture them AT ALL.

by Anonymousreply 32January 28, 2018 12:57 PM

Me too, R15, me too.

by Anonymousreply 33January 28, 2018 2:11 PM

I'm sorry but The Goldbergs sucks. Totally unfunny

by Anonymousreply 34January 28, 2018 2:32 PM

Paul's a cutie!

by Anonymousreply 35January 28, 2018 2:56 PM

Ally Mills is married into the evil Breitbart family. She's an alt-right white supremacist (or she's at least cool with it).

by Anonymousreply 36January 28, 2018 2:58 PM

Didn't Jason Hervey go on to become a drug dealer to the stars?

by Anonymousreply 40January 28, 2018 6:43 PM

I don't recall hearing anything about Savage but there were strongly-worded rumors and blind items towards the end of the run about Hervey harassing females on the set ; Olivia d'Abo would know.

by Anonymousreply 41January 28, 2018 7:07 PM

....

by Anonymousreply 42January 28, 2018 8:23 PM

Hervey was on Battle of the Network Stars last summer and came off HORRIBLE. Like the douchiest guy that could ever douche. He was so stunningly horrible that even the hosts made commentary of it.

by Anonymousreply 43January 28, 2018 8:37 PM

Whoa r43, there's a battle of the network stars still? I gotta hear more about this! Also, why would he be on it? Is he on any shows now?

by Anonymousreply 44January 28, 2018 8:41 PM

She is either being shady or stupid bringing that up after all this time.

Nobody remembers those accusations. Now, they all do.

Wonder if she is still pissed off with the boys for losing her paychecks . . .

by Anonymousreply 45January 28, 2018 8:43 PM

ABC rebooted the series last summer with a collection of "stars," including Hervey. It's probably up on Hulu. I only made it through a few episodes.

by Anonymousreply 46January 28, 2018 8:53 PM

I remember as a kid thinking this show might be interesting to watch and then I would attempt to watch it and it was so damn boring. Thank Gawd the boomers are done with and the 60's are kinda over as a culture phenomenum. FYI people would say I looked like Kevin.

Weird. I’d always heard that Savage was humble and well-adjusted.

Well, I don’t know what to make of it. Guess he’s not?

by Anonymousreply 50March 21, 2018 8:40 PM

I agree.

Weird.

Who's next Ron Howard?

by Anonymousreply 51March 21, 2018 8:49 PM

The first season was great--it gradually went down hill after that. The Goldbergs does seem clearly derivative.

The Goldbergs > Wonder Years

by Anonymousreply 55June 30, 2018 4:24 PM

It's not surprising that The Wonder Years clearly influenced The Goldbergs since Adam F. Goldberg grew up watching The Wonder Years. The difference is the actual video footage of real life events that each episode of The Goldbergs is based on.

by Anonymousreply 56June 30, 2018 4:31 PM

It's interesting how Alley Mills has morphed into a more right-wing life. Back in the late70s-early 80s, I worked with her on a couple of stage productions in L.A. when she identified as a "card-carrying lesbian," in a long-term relationship with an actress/director who, if you were around back then, you'd know from her TV appearances. Guess time changes all of us!

by Anonymousreply 57June 30, 2018 6:19 PM

Another reason for DL to love The Goldbergs:
