Wonder Years was cancelled because of sexual harassment lawsuit against Fred Savage and Jason Hervey
Alley Mills, who played the mom in The Wonder Years, tells Yahoo that the show was cancelled due to a sexual harassment lawsuit against her TV children Fred Savage and Jason Hervey. The Los Angeles Times and Variety did report on the suit in 1993, the year the show was cancelled, though unclear whether it’s the reason the show was cancelled. [Note: We were unable to find court records online.]
According to the LA Times, 31-year-old costume designer Monique Long filed a sexual harassment suit against Savage (then 16) and Hervey (then 20), claiming that “they verbally and physically harassed her daily” and Savage “constantly held her hand” and “asked her to have an affair.”
Mills rejects the allegations as a “big joke” partly because Savage is the “most wonderful human being that ever walked the face of the earth.”

Yet ABC gave his brother a show for 7 years.

Show was canceled because it was running out of steam after 7 years. Rating were also down.
Harrassment charges may have been a minor factor in ABC's decision to cancel.
At 16 years old, if Savage did sexually harass the costume designer, it was behavior he learned from watching others, like Jason Hervey.

Right before joining the cast of [italic]Diff'rent Strokes[/italic] in its final season, Jason played a bratty child actor in the sappy nuns-and-orphans movie from [italic]Pee-Wee's Big Adventure[/italic]. I guess he wasn't acting then.

& the worst thing about being young is - aspects of popular culture are in your face - most people I knew liked this piece of crap, so I'd end up looking at it all the time - what was I supposed to do, walk round the block until it ended? Hide in the bathroom?

Alley Mills told this story trying to DEFEND him as a friend, but all she accomplished was putting his name out there for another #MeToo.

Alley Mills is sort of crazy. She wanted the series finale to be all about her character going back to college, and she told people, "We don;t want any more about Kevin and Winnie--that's all played out, anyway."

Licensing all of the expensive songs from the 60s took forever and that's why the series took so long to be released on DVD.

R25 There's already a shitload of crappy coming of age TV shows set in the 80s. We don't need anymore.

My So-called Life reminded me of a modern Wonder Years. They used the same main character voice over, which was not as common back then but is used all the time now on TV shows.

Hervey was on Battle of the Network Stars last summer and came off HORRIBLE. Like the douchiest guy that could ever douche. He was so stunningly horrible that even the hosts made commentary of it.

It's not surprising that The Wonder Years clearly influenced The Goldbergs since Adam F. Goldberg grew up watching The Wonder Years. The difference is the actual video footage of real life events that each episode of The Goldbergs is based on.

It's interesting how Alley Mills has morphed into a more right-wing life. Back in the late70s-early 80s, I worked with her on a couple of stage productions in L.A. when she identified as a "card-carrying lesbian," in a long-term relationship with an actress/director who, if you were around back then, you'd know from her TV appearances. Guess time changes all of us!
