Appreciation for the divine Princess Alexandra cousin of the British Queen and her wonderful colourful fashion sense

I love the colourful and often quirky fashion sense of the underappreciated 81 year old cousin of Queen Elizabeth the second - Princess Alexandra.

So colourful! So stylish and so camp!

I think she's kind of the Joan Collins of the British royal family up to a point! She really is a snappy dresser with an eye for clothes that sparkle and have impact!

Joan Collins? How about Dame Edna !

by Anonymousreply 1January 27, 2018 10:10 PM

Love her colourful jacket here! Bet its a unique bespoke item of clothing made just for her! Goes well with her pink skirt.

Old honky... trying to steal my spot-light, off with her head!

by Anonymousreply 3January 27, 2018 10:15 PM

Perhaps [R1]!! 😉 😅😘 I think she's a combination of Joan and Dame Edna and would probably take such a statement with good humour!

by Anonymousreply 4January 27, 2018 10:17 PM

Love her silky /satin outfit here

by Anonymousreply 6January 27, 2018 10:25 PM

I like her.....

by Anonymousreply 7January 27, 2018 10:26 PM

She's no Birgitta of Sweden, a.k.a. "Princess Jennifuh Leathuh."

by Anonymousreply 8January 27, 2018 10:28 PM

She certainly seems to be [R6] Seems full of vitality and fun and smiles. I bet she's a good laugh in her own way and has a wicked sense of humour.

by Anonymousreply 9January 27, 2018 10:36 PM

Love her!

by Anonymousreply 10January 27, 2018 10:38 PM

She certainly seems to be a bit puzzled and unimpressed by Princess Michael of Kent's eye patch here!

She looks YEAR'S younger than Camilla R5, though the opposite is true. Outstanding!

by Anonymousreply 16January 27, 2018 11:02 PM

[R16] I noticed that too. It's far from impossible that she won't actually outlive Camilla. Princess Alexandra may well have some of the longevity genes that her majesty has.

by Anonymousreply 17January 27, 2018 11:03 PM

OP picture looks like something I swore Carolyn Stoddard wore on Dark Shadows!

by Anonymousreply 18January 27, 2018 11:04 PM

Look at the liver spots on her hands!

by Anonymousreply 19January 27, 2018 11:10 PM

R13, Princess Michael should have gone all out and worn a black pirate patch (she told us she was hardcore!)

Princess Alexandra has been one of the hardest working Royals, but she doesn't get much coverage outside the UK, I believe. Her father was Prince George, the Duke of Kent, who had affairs with a large variety of men and women, and who developed a drug habit during his involvement with Kiki Preston.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 20January 27, 2018 11:57 PM

Is that a human at R8?!

by Anonymousreply 21January 28, 2018 12:04 AM

[R13] She doesn't get much coverage in the UK either at least not in the mainstream press. A lot of royal forums are aware how much she does and how popular and liked she is with the Queen and amongst the wider royal family.

But you are right she's a hard worker and has in the past often represented the Queen to foreign vips diplomats etc She quietly flies under the radar but is present at big state banquets when the Queen grants a state visit to a foreign head of state or government.

by Anonymousreply 22January 28, 2018 12:12 AM

Calm down Meghan there's enough spotlight and attention to go around for everyone in the fullness of time!!! [R3] 😉

by Anonymousreply 25January 28, 2018 12:31 AM

R25, I was making a bad joke that, because of her eccentric clothing choices, she’s wearing clothing from the future. Instead, I failed miserably and misspelled her name.

by Anonymousreply 26January 28, 2018 12:37 AM

Great thread, OP!

More Princess Alexandra, please!

by Anonymousreply 27January 28, 2018 12:38 AM

No worries [R26] I just wasn't sure but that might be a reflection on me not you!

by Anonymousreply 28January 28, 2018 12:38 AM

The Queen is well known to adore her cousin Princess Alexandra and justly so.

by Anonymousreply 35January 28, 2018 7:16 AM

Apparently pretty much all of the senior royals adore her and the younger ones respect her is what I've heard. [R35]

She's what you'd call a safe pair of hands, utterly dependable and loyal.

by Anonymousreply 36January 28, 2018 7:21 AM

No racist brooches from her, that’s for sure. And one of only 3 working females of the blood royal.

by Anonymousreply 37January 28, 2018 9:00 AM

Her mother, Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent , was the most elegant and beautiful of her generation and a favorite of the whole royal family.

by Anonymousreply 38January 28, 2018 10:36 AM

Gosh [R45] The Kents certainly do seem to have the genes for human tallness in their family!

I wonder how tall Princess Alexandra is? She definitely towers over the Queen.

by Anonymousreply 64January 28, 2018 7:20 PM

She's one of the few people the Queen can treat as anything like a peer--they are the only two female grandchildren of George V and Queen Mary, and so have been close for years. Now that her mother and Margaret are gone, Alexandra is one of the few close family members the queen has left other than Philip. And she's very sunny and hardworking, so it's no wonder the queen adores her.

by Anonymousreply 65January 28, 2018 7:21 PM

[R65] I wonder if the Queen made Princess Alexandra godmother to any of her children?

by Anonymousreply 66January 28, 2018 7:23 PM

As for the hats, I remember hearing that at Ascot, one of the big things people bet on is the color that the Queen will wear that day.

by Anonymousreply 70January 28, 2018 8:52 PM

Well [R70] That sounds like a slamdunk dead cert that he will be invited to the Royal wedding in the autumn then I'm sure Princess Alexandra will be invited to both of the Royal weddings this year and be dressed divinely on both occasions!

by Anonymousreply 71January 28, 2018 9:23 PM

In R3's picture Alexandra is wearing the robes of a member of the Order of the Garter. The most coveted order and one solely in the power of the Queen. Note that Princess Pushy may be in the coach with her but no garter for her!

by Anonymousreply 72January 28, 2018 9:45 PM

[R72] That's the Duchess of Kent not Princess Pushy!

by Anonymousreply 73January 28, 2018 9:48 PM

She is one of those women who, while not raving beauties in their youth, are stunning older women.

She is really beautiful.

Nice skin, lovely hair color, good figure, age appropriate and very stylish clothes that are always flattering and imaginative.

Lovely.

by Anonymousreply 76January 29, 2018 12:18 AM

She's a real glamorous granny [R76]

Her skin is fantastic. I hope mine is in such good condition when I'm 81!

I wonder how well she got on with The Queen Mother and Princess Margaret? I'm curious also which of her sisters in law she gets on with best - Princess Michael of Kent or the Duchess of Kent?

by Anonymousreply 77January 29, 2018 12:23 AM

by Anonymousreply 78January 29, 2018 1:34 AM

Privately, Alexandra outranks Camilla:

Via Wikipedia:

"In 2005, Elizabeth II changed the order of precedence for private occasions, putting Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, fourth in the order of precedence, after herself, Anne, Princess Royal, and Princess Alexandra, contrary to the usual position of the heir's consort. Charles' first wife, Diana, Princess of Wales, had ranked above the Princess Royal and Princess Alexandra.[1] The Duchess of Cornwall continues to rank second in the order of precedence at official occasions, such as state dinners.

by Anonymousreply 117January 30, 2018 8:52 AM

More, please.

by Anonymousreply 118January 30, 2018 1:25 PM

[R117] WOW that really does illustrate how highly the Queen regards Princess Alexandra. I hadn't appreciated that they have different protocols of importance for private occasions, I just thought royal rank was the same in all situations. Anyway I wonder how Camilla felt about that and whether she took it as a royal snub!!! 😮

by Anonymousreply 119January 30, 2018 4:10 PM

Your very welcome [R116] and thanks very much indeed for the compliment!

I think she's great and a sunburst full of zest as you say but I also felt that she was probably unknown to a lot of people hence the thread!

The current Duke and Duchess of Kent with their three children in 1975. The distant, faraway look of the father speaks of marriage troubles ahead. The older boys (Earl of St Andrews and Lord Nicholas Windsor were cute when they were kids but they lost most of their looks as they matured in adulthood. In contrast, their daughter, Lady Helen, retained most of her beauty). Both the Duchess and Lord Nicholas became Catholics late in life.

by Anonymousreply 137January 30, 2018 6:07 PM

I know the Royal Family are "different", but for giggles, try to imagine Thanksgiving with YOUR family with whoever curtsying and/or bowing to whoever.

The mind bends.

Of course, nobody in that group has to bring the desert or make sure the turkey doesn't get too dry, so this gives them something to do.

by Anonymousreply 138January 30, 2018 7:16 PM

[R135] Princess Marina is certainly breathtakingly beautiful. Great aesthetics.

by Anonymousreply 139January 30, 2018 7:59 PM

R138, one curtsies and bows only on greeting and taking leave. And the Royal Family does not celebrate "Thanksgiving."

Too much is made of this. It's a nod to precedence, which is what royalty exists to represent. If they don't abide by the protocols, why should anyone else? And the person is not being shown deference as a personal honor. It simply reflects the person's role, which is a different thing.

Of course Americans (I grew up in the USA) know nothing of the basics of civility as formerly understood by all people in their society. Why should they respect the sense of propriety still upheld elsewhere? Hey, Grammy, how's it hangin'? (fist bump and ass pat)

Thanksgiving, indeed.

by Anonymousreply 140January 30, 2018 8:10 PM

[quote]Of course Americans (I grew up in the USA) know nothing of the basics of civility as formerly understood by all people in their society.

As we discussed in other royal threads, no members of the royal family bow or curtsy to each other (in public at least) other than to the (or any) sovereign and their spouse.

All of this palace intrigue about Kate/Meghan having to curtsy to princesses of the blood...it’s 100% true de jure, but is de facto ignored.

Indeed thanks to the poster or posters who has posted so many photos of Princess Alexandra in recent hours it's all appreciated!

by Anonymousreply 187January 31, 2018 4:47 PM

She does look more stylish, R15, but what is that bandage on her leg? The Queen takes those daily walks that keep her more agile maybe. Either way, they both look good for their age.

by Anonymousreply 188January 31, 2018 4:49 PM

I couldn't agree more [R162]

by Anonymousreply 189January 31, 2018 4:55 PM

Princess Alexandra is 10 years younger than the Queen.

by Anonymousreply 190January 31, 2018 4:56 PM

[R188] I'm not sure when that picture was taken but I know in recent years Princess Alexandra had a fall and broke her wrist. Perhaps she cut or hurt her leg in the same fall hence the plaster if the photo was taken some time after the fall?

by Anonymousreply 191January 31, 2018 4:59 PM

Might she need a young handsome gay gentleman to escort her to fabulous parties?

by Anonymousreply 192January 31, 2018 5:01 PM

She has the arched-brow (for focus and intelligence), combined with a slightly wry smile and a willingness to look directly at thing, all of which allows her to seem engaged and "present" even when she's not. She knows how to be "on" in a very attractive, reassuring way.

If her own taste has led to her sense of style, she's a genius. If someone else took charge in the past and taught her, that person is a genius.

Hands down, the best dresser of all the royals, and that includes European, Middle-East, African and Asian/Oceanic houses. God, she's good.

by Anonymousreply 193January 31, 2018 5:07 PM

I would like that job [R192] if it became available!! 😉

by Anonymousreply 194January 31, 2018 5:14 PM

Pincess Alexandra is Harry's great aunt. Given her relationship to him and to the Queen, I can't imagine her not being included on the wedding guest list.

by Anonymousreply 195January 31, 2018 5:27 PM

R195 - what makes you think Alexandra won't be on the guest list? Unless she dies before the wedding, she'll be there.

I suspect even Princess Michael of Kent (aka Princess Pushy with the offensive black brooch) will be invited.

I'm more interested in who WON'T be invited from Sparkles side of the family. Now there's the interesting question.

by Anonymousreply 196January 31, 2018 5:40 PM

I doubt she took it as a snub, R119, but I wouldn't be surprised if Charles did. I understand she's generally good humored and has been accepted into the family because she can manage Charles. Apparently, he's grumpy, moody and can be temperamental, but she has a positive influence on him, thus making everyone else's life easier. I'm just guessing, but I think the Queen has accepted her, because because of the positive effect she has on the Prince.

by Anonymousreply 206January 31, 2018 10:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 207January 31, 2018 10:15 PM

I wonder [R196] if Sarah Ferguson will be there but maybe not seated with the royal family? I agree Princess Alexandra will definitely be invited. She certainly hasn't alienated or upset anyone in the Royal family to warrant a snub.

by Anonymousreply 208January 31, 2018 10:23 PM

Princess Alexandra went through a very trying time with her daughter marina a few years ago, but she admirably carried on doing her thing like a good royal does.

by Anonymousreply 209January 31, 2018 10:47 PM

What was wrong with her daughter?

by Anonymousreply 210January 31, 2018 11:02 PM

I wonder for how many more years Princess Alexandra will continue to do royal engagements at her current level? I'm not sure when the Queen Mother stopped doing royal engagements but I think Princess Alice who lived to 102 carried out royal engagements until she was in her nineties when her health seriously declined.

by Anonymousreply 211January 31, 2018 11:05 PM

[R210] She was a royal rebel falling pregnant outside wedlock with a poor choice of partner. She fell out with her parents and started giving interviews to tabloid newspapers.

Marina is now close to her mother especially since her father Angus Ogilvy sadly passed away. Princess Alexandra is close to both her children and seems close to her grandchildren also. Marina has rehabilated herself and has now divorced her husband and is safely back in the royal fold.

by Anonymousreply 216February 2, 2018 4:17 AM

Good clip, R216, but there is a mistake. Edward & Sophie's daughter is also a grand-daughter of the Queen. The York girls are not the only ones.

Perhaps the key in Andrew's case is the request for money for his daughters.

I remember reading somewhere back along this thread or one of the articles that were linked here, that the cost of Princess Alexandra's Royal duties exceeded the amount she was paid and her husband Angus Ogilvy made up the difference out of their own funds. Something none of the other royals would think of doing. Certainly not Andrew.

by Anonymousreply 217February 2, 2018 4:41 AM

I have read several books on the royals that claim she most certainly did have an affair with Prince Philip, and Mountbatten as well. Keeping it in the family.

by Anonymousreply 218February 2, 2018 5:08 AM

R218 - I don't think the Queen would have remained so close to her if she had an affair with her husband. Neither the Queen nor Alexandra doesn't seem the types to have affairs to me. I never heard any rumors regarding Alexandra's marriage to Ogilvy.

by Anonymousreply 219February 2, 2018 2:07 PM

^ Neither the Queen nor Alexandra seem the type of women to have affairs...

by Anonymousreply 220February 2, 2018 2:08 PM

[R218] Your not giving a full account of what was written in those books. What I read was that there was idle gossip and rumour mongering about Alexandra and Philip, tittle tattle if you like and Alexandras husband Angus Ogilvy spoke to the Queen about it and was satisfied when she came back to him to say she'd established it was not true

As another poster said The Queen would not be as close as she is to Alexandra if this was true.

Rumour and fact are not the same thing.

by Anonymousreply 221February 2, 2018 3:24 PM

I'll have to dig out the books- one was written by someone who flauted the NDA. In any case, I remember vividly that one said Princess Alexandra was exactly Philip's type. Of course, there can never be any official proof.

Alexandra is actually the M of princesses.

by Anonymousreply 237February 3, 2018 4:54 PM

[R233] I don't think Princess Alexandra is a snob. Sure she's posh and has a posh voice but heck what do we expect she's the cousin of the Queen for goodness sake! People expect her to be posh, well turned out and to look the role. She'd be criticised if she turned up to a state banquet wearing jogging pants and an ASDA george brand pull over on her head!

Being posh and being haughty or a snob are different things. Alexandra is the former not the latter.

In 2015 a friend of mine was with his aunt and saw her on a royal visit to Southport in Northern England. She was friendly, smiley and chatty with everybody who'd turned up for the event and shook everybody's hand. There was no aloofness about her she was totally at ease. From a sort of diagonal side on view my friend witnessed a Scotsman who'd moved to Southport charting with her and she was asking him about Scotland and what part he and his family originated from. Her face seemed to light up more when she realised she was chatting to a Scotsman! They couldn't catch everything that was said but it was along the lines of oh yes my husband was from that part of Scotland, its fantastic up there, I will be visiting again sometime as I've friends up there. The guy she was speaking too then jokingly pointed to her hat and said something like you'll need an even bigger hat than that large hat when you go as it's so cold up there! She laughed and gave a knowing reaction in her face and eyes as if to say I know your right it's cold up there but you cheeky funny one mentioning my hat size! She was very good humoured and clearly enjoyed herself. The guy briefly touched her arm as she walked off with a big smile on her obviously amused face to move towards the building she was visiting. She didn't flinch or react badly when he touched her arm in a friendly nice to meet you and joke gesture. If she was a big snob she would have reacted quite differently to that situation and the guy touching her arm albeit even if it was in a friendly meant way. Everyone at the event that day left with their feelings raised so I reject the caricature that these visits are just ribbon cutting. It served as a tonic uplifting those who attended and a positive boost in the local community.

by Anonymousreply 238February 3, 2018 6:11 PM

[R238] Chatting with her not charting with her! ^^^

by Anonymousreply 239February 3, 2018 6:14 PM

[R231] Yes I think Princess Alexandra was the royal the Queen asked and trusted to oversee the ceremonial transfer of Nigeria to independence in 1962? That's a big impressive vote of confidence for such a diplomatically important and sensitive task.

by Anonymousreply 240February 3, 2018 7:19 PM

[quote] Good clip, [R216], but there is a mistake. Edward & Sophie's daughter is also a grand-daughter of the Queen. The York girls are not the only ones.

It should be remembered, though, that Edward and Sophie's daughter does not use the HRH and is not termed "Princess Louise" (though she could be). She is exempt from the royal perks, but she is also exempt from royal duties.

Beatrice and Eugenie are adults who have retained the HRH Princess status, so they are expected to fulfill royal duties.

The relationship to Princess Alexandra to Prince Harry (and Prince William): they are first cousins, twice removed. Alexandra and Elizabeth are first cousins, both being grandchildren of George. Two generations separate Elizabeth from Harry; thus, first cousins, twice removed. (Prince Charles is Princess Alexandra's first cousin, once removed.)

by Anonymousreply 248February 7, 2018 7:15 PM

[R248] I get confused on the difference between second cousins and third cousins etc and cousins once removed twice removed etc. I get lost on the journey to understanding that!!

For instance what is the description for what say Princess Alexandras children's relationship is to Prince Harry compared to Princess Alexandra herself?

by Anonymousreply 249February 7, 2018 7:20 PM

R198 That yellow dress on the granddaughter is awfully risque! R206 & R218 You are=you're, not your.

by Anonymousreply 250February 7, 2018 8:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 251February 7, 2018 8:20 PM

R247, Thanks! It's really such an unnatural life, yet she makes it all seem effortless.

by Anonymousreply 252February 7, 2018 10:33 PM

Your welcome [R252] I will post more Princess Alexandra videos as time goes on. I agree she makes it all seem a breeze and never shows any sign of boredom or frustration. Totally professional.

by Anonymousreply 253February 7, 2018 11:19 PM

R249, maybe this will help. As noted, Alexandra and Elizabeth are first cousins. Their children and second cousins. Their grandchildren are third cousins. The "removed" part comes in when you cross generations. So. Alexandra is a first cousin, once removed to Prince Charles. She's a first cousin, twice removed to Prince Harry.

by Anonymousreply 254February 8, 2018 12:01 AM

For R249

People who have the same parents are siblings. (QEII and Princess Margaret, for example)

People who share one set of grandparents - their parents were brothers and/or sisters - are First Cousins (QEII and Princess Alexandra are First Cousins. QEII's father and Princess Alexandra's father were brothers.)

People who share one set of great-grandparents - their parents are First cousins - are Second Cousins. (Charles, Anne, Andrew, Edward) are second cousins to Princess Alexandra's children.

The "once removed" is used to describe the relationship of a person to the children of their First Cousin. (Princess Alexandra is a First Cousin Once Removed to Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward).

The "twice removed" is used to describe the relationship of a person to the grandchildren of their First Cousin. (Princess Alexandra is a First Cousin Twice Removed to William, Harry, and the children of Anne and Andrew and Edward.)

The pattern continues down through Third Cousins, Fourth Cousins, "thrice removed", etc.

by Anonymousreply 255February 8, 2018 12:06 AM

Thanks[R254] So if I'm understanding you correctly does that mean that Princess Alexandras grandchildren say Flora Ogilvy is the third cousin of Prince Harry?

by Anonymousreply 256February 8, 2018 12:08 AM

Yes, R256

I wonder if Princess Alexandra will be the member of the Royal family the Queen sends to Prince Henrik's funeral to represent her? Especially as Princess Alexandra is apparently in part descended from Danish royalty.

by Anonymousreply 262February 16, 2018 9:15 PM

R262, I think it would be a wonderful choice, but I notice that almost all the Royals cut back their long-distance traveling at a certain age. Certainly EIIR and Prince Philip traveled the world at one time, but seem to stay much closer to home, now. But Princess Alexandra would be an excellent representative.

by Anonymousreply 263February 17, 2018 12:27 AM

[R263] If Princess Alexandra is up for it and able that would be fantastic but of course I'm sure the Queen would not try to pressurise or harangue her into agreeing to do it. Not long to wait now I think until we hear who actually will be the Queens representative. I find it interesting in a good way just how much Danish ancestry and blood there is in the British royal family. I think it's a very welcome situation as the Danish are really a great people and nation. They seem to have a very balanced and sober approach to life and are not prone to hysteria. Very level headed.

by Anonymousreply 264February 19, 2018 3:03 PM

I doubt even The Queen would call the journey from London to Copenhagen (Denmark) arduous, It is about 600 miles and would take around an hour and a half on a private plane.

Prince Henrick requested a private funeral anyhow, as has Prince Phillip.

Cheers [R297] Great picture. I do wonder if Princess Alexandra gets on well with Princess Michael of Kent and her other sister in law The Duchess of Kent? I wonder what the dynamic is like between them? A very interesting mix of characters.

I have heard rum that she got on pretty fine with the late Princess Diana and similarly is OK with Camilla? I don't think she ever took sides against either woman?

by Anonymousreply 298April 15, 2018 9:57 PM

R222, it's possible that you're thinking of Princess Pushy re the royal who had an affair with the Duke of E. It was a rumour going around.

She's wonderful. She takes being a royal princess very seriously, while at the same time, not taking herself too seriously.

Some time ago a rumor surfaced that she and Philip had an affair. Total BS. Whatever Philip's proclivities, it's not in Alexandra's character. And even if she were inclined to have affairs, her affection and her loyalty for the Queen would make Philip off-limits.

Were she and her husband considered to be happy together?

What was the story of her parents? He was bisexual? Did the mother have affairs?

by Anonymousreply 380June 15, 2018 5:56 PM

R380 - I think Alexandra and her husband Angus were a pretty solid couple. The only whispers I heard about infidelity was Prince Philip having an affair with Alexandra. I don't think the Princess would do that to her cousin, The Queen, so I really find that rumor really hard to believe. I don't think the Queen would be so close to Alexandra if she slept with her husband.

Alexandra's father was a drug abusing bisexual. I never heard any rumors about his wife Marina.

Indeed it does show the effects of the lockdown on personal vanity or grooming like hair affected all from royalty down. Having said that for her age I think Princess Alexandras hair is pretty good and chic. I'm pleased to see she did her bit and stepped up to the plate during these difficult times. Especially during carers week which is a very worthy and underappreciated cause.

I believe her granddaughter Flora was due to marry earlier this year and must have had to delay because of the pandemic restrictions.

Is the Duchess of Kent still alive? I didn’t see her at the Jubilee or at the funeral today.

by Anonymousreply 469December 28, 2022 12:47 PM

r469 Quite a while and she was absent at her brother The Duke of Kents birthday photo last month.

by Anonymousreply 470November 3, 2024 10:43 PM

The coronation? She's quite frail. In a wheel chair at the Coronation, I thought. She was earlier in the year.
