Appreciation for the divine Princess Alexandra cousin of the British Queen and her wonderful colourful fashion sense
I love the colourful and often quirky fashion sense of the underappreciated 81 year old cousin of Queen Elizabeth the second - Princess Alexandra.
So colourful! So stylish and so camp!
I think she's kind of the Joan Collins of the British royal family up to a point! She really is a snappy dresser with an eye for clothes that sparkle and have impact!

R13, Princess Michael should have gone all out and worn a black pirate patch (she told us she was hardcore!)
Princess Alexandra has been one of the hardest working Royals, but she doesn't get much coverage outside the UK, I believe. Her father was Prince George, the Duke of Kent, who had affairs with a large variety of men and women, and who developed a drug habit during his involvement with Kiki Preston.
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 20 | January 27, 2018 11:57 PM

[R13] She doesn't get much coverage in the UK either at least not in the mainstream press. A lot of royal forums are aware how much she does and how popular and liked she is with the Queen and amongst the wider royal family.
But you are right she's a hard worker and has in the past often represented the Queen to foreign vips diplomats etc She quietly flies under the radar but is present at big state banquets when the Queen grants a state visit to a foreign head of state or government.

She's one of the few people the Queen can treat as anything like a peer--they are the only two female grandchildren of George V and Queen Mary, and so have been close for years. Now that her mother and Margaret are gone, Alexandra is one of the few close family members the queen has left other than Philip. And she's very sunny and hardworking, so it's no wonder the queen adores her.

Privately, Alexandra outranks Camilla:
Via Wikipedia:
"In 2005, Elizabeth II changed the order of precedence for private occasions, putting Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, fourth in the order of precedence, after herself, Anne, Princess Royal, and Princess Alexandra, contrary to the usual position of the heir's consort. Charles' first wife, Diana, Princess of Wales, had ranked above the Princess Royal and Princess Alexandra.[1] The Duchess of Cornwall continues to rank second in the order of precedence at official occasions, such as state dinners.

[R117] WOW that really does illustrate how highly the Queen regards Princess Alexandra. The current Duke and Duchess of Kent with their three children in 1975. The distant, faraway look of the father speaks of marriage troubles ahead. The older boys (Earl of St Andrews and Lord Nicholas Windsor were cute when they were kids but they lost most of their looks as they matured in adulthood. In contrast, their daughter, Lady Helen, retained most of her beauty). Both the Duchess and Lord Nicholas became Catholics late in life.

I know the Royal Family are "different", but for giggles, try to imagine Thanksgiving with YOUR family with whoever curtsying and/or bowing to whoever.
The mind bends.
Of course, nobody in that group has to bring the desert or make sure the turkey doesn't get too dry, so this gives them something to do.

R138, one curtsies and bows only on greeting and taking leave. And the Royal Family does not celebrate "Thanksgiving."
Too much is made of this. It's a nod to precedence, which is what royalty exists to represent. If they don't abide by the protocols, why should anyone else? And the person is not being shown deference as a personal honor. It simply reflects the person's role, which is a different thing.
Of course Americans (I grew up in the USA) know nothing of the basics of civility as formerly understood by all people in their society. Why should they respect the sense of propriety still upheld elsewhere? Hey, Grammy, how's it hangin'? (fist bump and ass pat)
Thanksgiving, indeed.

As we discussed in other royal threads, no members of the royal family bow or curtsy to each other (in public at least) other than to the (or any) sovereign and their spouse.
All of this palace intrigue about Kate/Meghan having to curtsy to princesses of the blood...it’s 100% true de jure, but is de facto ignored.

She has the arched-brow (for focus and intelligence), combined with a slightly wry smile and a willingness to look directly at thing, all of which allows her to seem engaged and "present" even when she's not. She knows how to be "on" in a very attractive, reassuring way.
If her own taste has led to her sense of style, she's a genius. If someone else took charge in the past and taught her, that person is a genius.

R195 - what makes you think Alexandra won't be on the guest list? Unless she dies before the wedding, she'll be there.
I suspect even Princess Michael of Kent (aka Princess Pushy with the offensive black brooch) will be invited.

I doubt she took it as a snub, R119, but I wouldn't be surprised if Charles did. I understand she's generally good humored and has been accepted into the family because she can manage Charles. Apparently, he's grumpy, moody and can be temperamental, but she has a positive influence on him, thus making everyone else's life easier. I'm just guessing, but I think the Queen has accepted her, because because of the positive effect she has on the Prince.

[R210] She was a royal rebel falling pregnant outside wedlock with a poor choice of partner. She fell out with her parents and started giving interviews to tabloid newspapers.
Marina is now close to her mother especially since her father Angus Ogilvy sadly passed away. Princess Alexandra is close to both her children and seems close to her grandchildren also. Marina has rehabilated herself and has now divorced her husband and is safely back in the royal fold.

Good clip, R216, but there is a mistake. Edward & Sophie's daughter is also a grand-daughter of the Queen. The York girls are not the only ones.
Perhaps the key in Andrew's case is the request for money for his daughters.
I remember reading somewhere back along this thread or one of the articles that were linked here, that the cost of Princess Alexandra's Royal duties exceeded the amount she was paid and her husband Angus Ogilvy made up the difference out of their own funds. Something none of the other royals would think of doing. Certainly not Andrew.

[R218] Your not giving a full account of what was written in those books. What I read was that there was idle gossip and rumour mongering about Alexandra and Philip, tittle tattle if you like and Alexandras husband Angus Ogilvy spoke to the Queen about it and was satisfied when she came back to him to say she'd established it was not true
As another poster said The Queen would not be as close as she is to Alexandra if this was true.
Rumour and fact are not the same thing.

[R233] I don't think Princess Alexandra is a snob. Sure she's posh and has a posh voice but heck what do we expect she's the cousin of the Queen for goodness sake! People expect her to be posh, well turned out and to look the role. She'd be criticised if she turned up to a state banquet wearing jogging pants and an ASDA george brand pull over on her head!
Being posh and being haughty or a snob are different things. Alexandra is the former not the latter.
In 2015 a friend of mine was with his aunt and saw her on a royal visit to Southport in Northern England. She was friendly, smiley and chatty with everybody who'd turned up for the event and shook everybody's hand. There was no aloofness about her she was totally at ease. From a sort of diagonal side on view my friend witnessed a Scotsman who'd moved to Southport charting with her and she was asking him about Scotland and what part he and his family originated from. Her face seemed to light up more when she realised she was chatting to a Scotsman! They couldn't catch everything that was said but it was along the lines of oh yes my husband was from that part of Scotland, its fantastic up there, I will be visiting again sometime as I've friends up there. The guy she was speaking too then jokingly pointed to her hat and said something like you'll need an even bigger hat than that large hat when you go as it's so cold up there! She laughed and gave a knowing reaction in her face and eyes as if to say I know your right it's cold up there but you cheeky funny one mentioning my hat size! She was very good humoured and clearly enjoyed herself. The guy briefly touched her arm as she walked off with a big smile on her obviously amused face to move towards the building she was visiting. She didn't flinch or react badly when he touched her arm in a friendly nice to meet you and joke gesture. If she was a big snob she would have reacted quite differently to that situation and the guy touching her arm albeit even if it was in a friendly meant way. Everyone at the event that day left with their feelings raised so I reject the caricature that these visits are just ribbon cutting. It served as a tonic uplifting those who attended and a positive boost in the local community.

It should be remembered, though, that Edward and Sophie's daughter does not use the HRH and is not termed "Princess Louise" (though she could be). She is exempt from the royal perks, but she is also exempt from royal duties.
Beatrice and Eugenie are adults who have retained the HRH Princess status, so they are expected to fulfill royal duties.

The relationship to Princess Alexandra to Prince Harry (and Prince William): they are first cousins, twice removed. Alexandra and Elizabeth are first cousins, both being grandchildren of George. Two generations separate Elizabeth from Harry; thus, first cousins, twice removed. (Prince Charles is Princess Alexandra's first cousin, once removed.)

[R248] I get confused on the difference between second cousins and third cousins etc and cousins once removed twice removed etc. I get lost on the journey to understanding that!!

R249, maybe this will help. As noted, Alexandra and Elizabeth are first cousins. Their children and second cousins. Their grandchildren are third cousins. The "removed" part comes in when you cross generations. So. Alexandra is a first cousin, once removed to Prince Charles. She's a first cousin, twice removed to Prince Harry.
by Anonymous | reply 254 | February 8, 2018 12:01 AM

For R249
People who have the same parents are siblings. (QEII and Princess Margaret, for example)
People who share one set of grandparents - their parents were brothers and/or sisters - are First Cousins (QEII and Princess Alexandra are First Cousins. QEII's father and Princess Alexandra's father were brothers.)
People who share one set of great-grandparents - their parents are First cousins - are Second Cousins. (Charles, Anne, Andrew, Edward) are second cousins to Princess Alexandra's children.
The "once removed" is used to describe the relationship of a person to the children of their First Cousin. (Princess Alexandra is a First Cousin Once Removed to Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward).
The "twice removed" is used to describe the relationship of a person to the grandchildren of their First Cousin. (Princess Alexandra is a First Cousin Twice Removed to William, Harry, and the children of Anne and Andrew and Edward.)
The pattern continues down through Third Cousins, Fourth Cousins, "thrice removed", etc.

R262, I think it would be a wonderful choice, but I notice that almost all the Royals cut back their long-distance traveling at a certain age. [R263] If Princess Alexandra is up for it and able that would be fantastic but of course I'm sure the Queen would not try to pressurise or harangue her into agreeing to do it. Not long to wait now I think until we hear who actually will be the Queens representative. I find it interesting in a good way just how much Danish ancestry and blood there is in the British royal family. I think it's a very welcome situation as the Danish are really a great people and nation. They seem to have a very balanced and sober approach to life and are not prone to hysteria. Very level headed.

I doubt even The Queen would call the journey from London to Copenhagen (Denmark) arduous, It is about 600 miles and would take around an hour and a half on a private plane.
Prince Henrick requested a private funeral anyhow, as has Prince Phillip.

Cheers [R297] Great picture. I do wonder if Princess Alexandra gets on well with Princess Michael of Kent and her other sister in law The Duchess of Kent? I wonder what the dynamic is like between them? A very interesting mix of characters.
I have heard rum that she got on pretty fine with the late Princess Diana and similarly is OK with Camilla? I don't think she ever took sides against either woman?

She's wonderful. She takes being a royal princess very seriously, while at the same time, not taking herself too seriously.
Some time ago a rumor surfaced that she and Philip had an affair. Total BS. Whatever Philip's proclivities, it's not in Alexandra's character. And even if she were inclined to have affairs, her affection and her loyalty for the Queen would make Philip off-limits.

R380 - I think Alexandra and her husband Angus were a pretty solid couple. The only whispers I heard about infidelity was Prince Philip having an affair with Alexandra. I don't think the Princess would do that to her cousin, The Queen, so I really find that rumor really hard to believe. I don't think the Queen would be so close to Alexandra if she slept with her husband.
Alexandra's father was a drug abusing bisexual. I never heard any rumors about his wife Marina.

I don't know if you are all the same person but than you for the photos and links! Indeed it does show the effects of the lockdown on personal vanity or grooming like hair affected all from royalty down. Having said that for her age I think Princess Alexandras hair is pretty good and chic. I'm pleased to see she did her bit and stepped up to the plate during these difficult times. Especially during carers week which is a very worthy and underappreciated cause.
I believe her granddaughter Flora was due to marry earlier this year and must have had to delay because of the pandemic restrictions.
