Actors have been hiding in the closet for years. His problem was going into the closet after being openly gay, seemingly to make it Hollywood after a long theater career. And still SH will not come out (yes, I know, bad pun) to actually SAY ie. words coming out of his mouth (!), that MM is his gf - why not, even though he knows that there is a lot of suspicion about this woman he supposedly loves? The problem is he lost all the weight he gained in S1 to bulk up for the role. Heughan needs every one of those 25 lbs. to look like a fearsome Highland warrior. In subsequent seasons and especially in those battle scenes, he looks too scrawny to be "The King of Men" leading an army into battle. And no, you can't use the excuse that the men were starving on the battlefield or the producers were trying to age him. He's a fictional character and he needs to be big and brawny throughout the series.

The thing is that DL isn't trying to prove anything. Not saying there aren't silly things being written here, because it's an anonymous message board so of course there are, but the general ethos to observe, comment, and snark.

The other thing is that while DL isn't always right, it's more right than not right about closeted celebrities. When rumors and conversations persist in the gay community over time about certain actors and athletes, I tend to believe them more than not. That's not proof, but it suffices for a working assumption. There may never be proof for some of them, depending on the level of closeting, which can range from a red carpet date to long-term hetero marriage and kids. Although it's getting harder to keep secrets in the social media age, which is itself only 10-15 years old. And, thankfully, it's getting easier to be gay in our world, in fits and starts, although that change hasn't hit Hollywood casting yet.

I myself don't have patience for comments about how gay Heughan looks (as "proof" anyway) or who likes whom on social media as "proof" of anything. I assume that if he's bearding that there will be those kind of likes on social media and visits and photos taken. I do think the overall patterns of PR involvement are interesting - where photos appear, what the narrative is, what Heughan is careful to say or not say. It's interesting to compare the strategies to other closeting strategies of other lesbian or gay celebrities, and also to see how those strategies are changing given social media. Anyone who's been paying attention - and DL has - can see the patterns. Because closet strategies have been around for a long, long time, albeit evolving as media and attitudes have changed. The idea that Heughan and Balfe were a secret couple never made any sense on any level - for them, for the people with money invested in them. But closeting a gay actor who is playing a straight romantic lead? That's fucking common, and there are patterns for it. When I see the patterns, I assume smoke = fire.

And those patterns explain a lot of the "off" behavior swirling around these particular actors - why they publicly flirt (Will and Grace, and for him, for awhile, selling HeteroHeughan); why every time there is talk about their romantic lives it gets awkward (mainly because there is a pink elephant in the room for one of them); why all those awkward photos appear every few months of him and the beard, but not so much of Balfe and her actual guy, now fiance. If Heughan was really hetero this would be so much easier and not at all awkward.

@543 it's not about accusing Sam Heughan of lying. Or, it is sort of, but in a long historical context of closeting in Hollywood and in society in general for hundreds of years. So while we would cheer him on and say good things about his personal integrity if he did come out, we also understand that this is a systemic issue and one that many, many other actors have navigated and are navigating in order to have careers in a backward industry that, ironically, completely depends upon gay talent and labor.
