Nepotism happens in all fields. It’s just that in other fields, outside entertainment, parents can’t pull some strings and just turn you into a doctor/lawyer/plumber overnight. There has to be at least an inkling of interest from their child. Only in Hollywood can a person with no talent, no passion for acting and absolutely no ambition still have a career because of who their dad is. Think of all the people with true talent who never make it, while an almost lifeless Dakota Johnson groans through three movies and Jaden Smith stares blankly through at least two.

They’re not usually in their books as real models but as “a child of celebrity” and they’re hired based on that. So I guess if you’re a fashion house who wants to get a bit of attention for a particular handbag/watch/perfume you hire the average looking spawn of a famous person and you know that it’ll get people talking. The attention won’t be necessarily positive, but it will drive online traffic to your site. Gap hired a whole bunch of spawn last year for this very reason.

See if you can spot the unimpressed real model among the riff raff in the group shot.

It used to be that celebrity parents for the most part discouraged their kids from entering the business, so the ones who actually made it had usually had an uphill battle that helped separate the wheat from the chaff. But now with celeb kids growing up in the spotlight like never before, developing social media followings even though they don't actually DO anything, etc, there's a weird passivity to it all - so many of them just seem to drift into modeling or acting, and nobody tries to stop it. I read somewhere not long ago (was it on DL?) that Jane Fonda said she always used to complain when people pointed out her advantages due to being Henry Fonda's daughter. She used to say, yes, that opened the door, but I had to go through and do the work myself and so being Henry's daughter didn't mean that much and of course, she would have succeeded on her own. (Very superior attitude.)

It wasn't until years later that she finally realized that it was getting that open door because she was Henry Fonda's daughter that was the key to her success. It wasn't her talent. There were lots of talented actresses who didn't have the connections to even get in the door for an interview.

Mamie Gummer inspires conflicted feelings in me. The first time I saw her onscreen was in the godawful RICKI AND THE FLASH and she was both distractingly ugly and photographed to look like a harridan.
