Macaulay Culkin Opened Up To Marc Maron About His Retirement, Michael Jackson, And His Abusive Father

January 24, 2018

[bold]On Living In Paris [/bold]— Culkin has been living primarily in Paris for the better part of four years. No one bothers him in Paris, he explains. “It was one of those things where I thought no one recognized me, but what it was is that they recognized me, but they just didn’t care.” He does a fair amount of painting and he is writing a follow-up to his first book. Mostly, however, he concedes that he has a very privileged life and does what he wants to do without much regard to the expectations of others. “I’m a 30-something retired person walking around with a baguette under my arm. I’m living a good life.”

[bold]On His Relationship with Michael Jackson:[/bold] Culkin met Jackson while working on The Nutcracker. Jackson actually came backstage with Donald Trump, with whom Jackson was friends at the time. After Home Alone came out, Jackson reached out again to Culkin and asked if he wanted to hang out. “We we’re friends. We were actually best friends for a stretch of time while I was growing up. It was a legitimate friendship,” Culkin recalls. “He enjoyed my youthfulness. He liked being a kid. He liked being a kid with me. He like being around kids, and it never struck me as odd.”

“It never felt weird,” Culkin continues. “It was just the way that it was. I looked at him for who he was. I was not enamored by him. We were friends.”

Culkin remained in touch with him until Jackson’s death in 2009.

Culkin also admits that he remains very close to Michael Jackson’s daughter, Paris. He’s her godfather. “I’m very protective of her,” Culkin tells Maron. “She is beloved by me. ” He tells Maron that he wouldn’t talk about her, however, beyond saying that she’s doing well.

[bold]On Working on SNL:[/bold] “My father was such a crazy person that I had to do the whole episode without cue cards,” Culkin tells Maron. Culkin hosted the show when he was 11 years old. “That meant that every other person in the cast couldn’t use cue cards, either.” Culkin also tells Maron that he has a friend on SNL who tells him that he’s never heard of anyone who has done with show without cue cards. “That’s insane. That’s completely insane.”

It was his father, however, who demanded that he do the show without cue cards. “Do good or I’ll hit you,” Culkin recalls.

[bold]On His Relationship with His Father[/bold]: “After I did Richie Rich in ’93 or ’94, my father and mother called it quits, which is one of the best things to ever happen to me. I was able to walk away from the business. I was able to say, ‘I hope you made all your money, because there’s no more coming from me.'”

Culkin never got along with his father, Culkin claims, even as a kid. “I’m going around the country locked in a room with a man who didn’t like me.”

“He was a bad man. He was abusive. Physically and mentally.” And not just to Culkin, but to his siblings and to his mother. “He was just a bad dude. A bad abusive man. He was a piece of work.”

After Richie Rich, Culkin was able to have his parent’s names removed from his money so that he could keep his “inheritance” — the money he made from all of his film work — when he turned 18. During his high school years, he was also able to live a relatively normal life. “I just wanted to get laid and smoke pot,” he tells Maron.

He remains estranged from his father to this day. Culkin is not that interested in reconnecting with him, either. “I don’t think he’s willing to say the things he needs to say.”

Culkin maintains that his father doesn’t deserve a relationship with his son. He still, however, remains close with his mom.

Ultimately, Culkin, who now hosts a podcast, “Bunny Ears,” with his friend Matt Cohen, is content with where he is in life as he approaches the age of 40. “I live a very full, rich, and silly life.”

I had no idea he was living in Paris.

Looks like he gets his shit together though.

by Anonymousreply 1January 24, 2018 2:55 PM

How many people died in that fire?

by Anonymousreply 2January 24, 2018 2:58 PM

'I'm a 30 year old retired person walking around with a baguette under my arm.'

Heaven.

by Anonymousreply 3January 24, 2018 2:59 PM

Macaulay Culkin seems like a wonderful man, and he has suffered through so much.

May the Lord Bless You, Macaulay, and keep you from harm.

R4 - You're on the wrong site. Take your religious musings, and stick them up your smelly cunt.

by Anonymousreply 5January 24, 2018 3:07 PM

Is he wealthy from "Home Alone"/"Home Alone 2"?

He was almost a nobody when he got the part, so his pay couldn't have been all that much.

Did he get a percentage deal?

by Anonymousreply 6January 24, 2018 3:08 PM

I did a very lazy search, R6, here is the first result:

[quote]According to sources, Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin earned $100,000 for Home Alone, and $1 million for his role in My Girl.

[quote]Then he went on to earn $4.5 million for Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, then $8 million for Getting Even With Dad and the same sum for Richie Rich.

[quote]He currently has a net worth of $15 million dollars, according to the Celebrity Net Worth site.

[quote] May the Lord Bless You, Macaulay, and keep you from harm.

Where was He when Kit Culkin was verbally abusing his own son? Even then, it was well-known what an asshole he was.

by Anonymousreply 8January 24, 2018 3:13 PM

R8,

I grew up with a similar type of father, and I have questioned God myself over the years.

God does not have invisible puppet strings to pull on the bad guys/girls. If we are left vulnerable to a-holes then we deal with it the best we can. We can fight back too--Christians are not always pacifists.

We can, however, prayer prayers of protection for others and spread a loving energy.

by Anonymousreply 9January 24, 2018 3:17 PM

I think i read the director of The Good Son walked off set because of Culkin's dad. Dude sounds like a real piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 10January 24, 2018 3:19 PM

There is no God

Atheism is antisemitism and so is goyism.

by Anonymousreply 12January 24, 2018 3:21 PM

One could live modestly in Paris.

by Anonymousreply 13January 24, 2018 3:23 PM

I tend to believe Mac that Jackson didn’t molest him. It’s interesting how some predators don’t abuse every potential victim in their scope. I’d say that they know how to pick their victims, but then there are some who seem to have less discretion and self-control.

I think Jackson was smart enough to NOT molest his higher-profile “friends”, so he’d have “alibis”. He saved it for the less-important kids. Although Mac would seem to be a perfect victim.

by Anonymousreply 14January 24, 2018 3:31 PM

Would it be such a burden for him to TRY to look presentable even just ONCE? I know he's fug but there's things one can do to improve one's appearance.

by Anonymousreply 15January 24, 2018 3:40 PM

R15, here he is in July 2017.

Not the belle of the ball but cleaned up.

by Anonymousreply 17January 24, 2018 3:49 PM

Who?

by Anonymousreply 18January 24, 2018 3:50 PM

Macaulay Culkin, Michael Jackson, and countless non-celebrities like myself all have the same story: that our fathers seemed bent on destroying our lives from early on. They used psychological, physical and sexual abuse on us, and there seemed to be an intent on breaking us.

And we all struggle as adults.

But we can make it through.

xoxoxo

by Anonymousreply 19January 24, 2018 3:51 PM

How many of you had a 'psycho dad' growing up?

I know I did.

by Anonymousreply 20January 24, 2018 3:52 PM

Heterosexuality is inherently psychotic, R20.

by Anonymousreply 21January 24, 2018 3:54 PM

R21, yes, perhaps, but my dad was a closet case who resented the hell out of us.

by Anonymousreply 22January 24, 2018 3:55 PM

My favorite story about John Candy involves him on the set of Uncle Buck and Culkin having trouble remembering all the questions he's suppose to ask during the interrogation in the kitchen, so Candy told John Hughes to film over his shoulder and he'd feed the lines to Culkin and he'd repeat them back, with Candy even throwing in a few adlibs.

Ya see, this is what Lindsey Lohan should have done, instead of to the M.E. to lay on her back for abusive Arabs.

by Anonymousreply 30January 24, 2018 4:48 PM

R6, he's wealthy from the follow up movies which were filmed at his peak popularity. He received mid to high seven figures for 4 or 5 movies.

This1995 LA Times article on the divorce says his estimated earnings were $50 million.

by Anonymousreply 32January 24, 2018 5:43 PM

It doesn’t sound like he’s crying a river at all, R32. It sounds like he’s pretty happy with his life.

by Anonymousreply 33January 24, 2018 5:48 PM

No talk of his romantic relationships? No mention of Mila?

by Anonymousreply 34January 24, 2018 5:48 PM

He actually seems like a pretty great guy and well-adjusted given the crazy shit he went through as a kid.

by Anonymousreply 35January 24, 2018 5:54 PM

Celebrity net worth is notoriously inaccurate.

$15 million is what he made in collective salaries. He had back end points on Home Alone 2 and My Girl.

Meaning he's probably worth a bit more. He also mentioned that he got prime real estate in NYC before it got really crazy. So there's that too.

by Anonymousreply 36January 24, 2018 5:57 PM

"Culkin met Jackson while working on The Nutcracker. Jackson actually came backstage with Donald Trump, with whom Jackson was friends at the time. After Home Alone came out, Jackson reached out again to Culkin and asked if he wanted to hang out."

Somebody has their timeline all messed up. Home Alone came out three years before The Nutcracker.

by Anonymousreply 37January 24, 2018 6:56 PM

R37, they probably meant Home Alone 2.

by Anonymousreply 38January 24, 2018 7:50 PM

R20, I did.

by Anonymousreply 39January 24, 2018 7:51 PM

This is a gay site, so shut the fuck up.

by Anonymousreply 40January 24, 2018 7:51 PM

Couldn't he just live there? He's not working, so he's not taking a job from a citizen.

by Anonymousreply 41January 24, 2018 7:57 PM

How does Olivia get to stay in France all these years?

They should deport her.

by Anonymousreply 44January 24, 2018 8:49 PM

yes, he may be rich but don't forget lots of it wasted on drugs. remember he was a DJ for a while as well. bet he was hooked on pills like E back then.

He will return to acting one day...in the near future.

by Anonymousreply 45January 24, 2018 8:53 PM

His ass was so cute in Party Monster.

by Anonymousreply 46January 24, 2018 9:05 PM

Everyone speculated back in the day that his volatile asshole father was abusing him, and now we find out it's true.

Whatever happened to Kit Culkin?

by Anonymousreply 47January 24, 2018 9:06 PM

R44 in France Type D non-working visa.

Now who's stupid?

by Anonymousreply 48January 24, 2018 9:08 PM

I suspect that Mac and MJ had close, intimate moments together. In the article he's quoted as saying, “It never felt weird,” it was just the way that it was. I looked at him for who he was. I was not enamored by him. We were friends.” He accepted the way Jackson was and didn't think anything of it. I doubt he would remain friends if heavy sex was involved but I can see a lot of cuddling. Culkin impresses me with his candor without be salacious.

by Anonymousreply 49January 24, 2018 9:37 PM

R38, Home Alone 2 also came out before The Nutcracker. Mac had also already done MJ's Black or White video. I am not sure what movie they really mean.

by Anonymousreply 50January 25, 2018 12:55 AM

Maron deserves his own thread. Can somebody start one? Thanks.

by Anonymousreply 51March 26, 2018 10:00 PM

Thanks for posting OP. I never liked the Home Alone movies but I like grown up Macaulay. He just seems really normal and honest unlike most child stars with messed up families.

by Anonymousreply 52March 26, 2018 10:07 PM

I don't see how he is well adjusted for the fact that he was close to mj. Wasnt he photographed a couple of years ago looking haggard like a drug addict. It seems like he is off drugs so that is good and hope he doesn't relapse.

by Anonymousreply 55March 26, 2018 10:19 PM

R44 you can get a visa in almost any country if you have enough money. You usually just have to invest something like 500k in some business in the country or similar vehicle and you can get a visa then. Each country has a different version but essentially you can buy a visa quite easily. He could even have gotten a visa for another country in the EU and still be living in France because it's one of the EU perks to be able to live and work in a different member state.

by Anonymousreply 56March 26, 2018 10:35 PM

by Anonymousreply 57March 26, 2018 10:39 PM

[Quote] Someone please tell him that the long hair just isn't working.

by Anonymousreply 59March 27, 2018 1:12 PM

[quote]$15 million is what he made in collective salaries. He had back end points on Home Alone 2 and My Girl.

And by law the parents had to have it an account after their 10% manager fee and couldn't touch it, which accrued interest.

In the 90's I was coming out of a Chinese take out and he was bouncing a basketball and not paying attention. I came down the few stairs and bam he crashed right into me. He couldn't have been sweeter and more apologetic. That impressed me, most NY'ers would have just huffed and moved on.

Any "God" who lets kids be molested, children be murdered at their desks in school, innocent people be mowed down by lunatics with a rifle, or blown to bits by crazed bombers, and through untold other atrocities, many in his name, is not a God I want anything to do with. I don't for one second believe this "God" exists or has ever existed, but in the extremely unlikely chance he does, he can rot for all I care.

by Anonymousreply 63March 27, 2018 1:51 PM

[quote]No one bothers him in Paris, he explains.

Bitch you haven't made a movie in 25 years, no one would recognize you in America either.

by Anonymousreply 64March 27, 2018 2:24 PM

Culkin seems like a nice guy. Alot of us have gone through a drug phase and so what? He is not perfect. And I am sorry so many people here had terrible fathers. I did not have the best one either but I cannot hate him. His behavior has affected me deeply and in a very dammagibg way but a lot of things did tbh. I am a messed up adult but I am trying.

by Anonymousreply 65March 27, 2018 3:08 PM

Who is more messed up Culkin or Furlong?

by Anonymousreply 66March 27, 2018 3:19 PM

Wow, that L.A. Times article posted upthread about the Culkin family (when the parents were separating and going through a court battle in the mid ‘90s) mentioned two things that surprised me:

The parents were never legally married and they had *7 kids* in total!

That’s a lot of kids, even back then. I wonder why they had so many and also never married.

Does anyone know if Macaulay is close with his other 6 siblings?

by Anonymousreply 67March 27, 2018 3:29 PM

So good as Karen's lawyer on W&G.

"How would you like to live under my skirt?"

"That's a lot of cheddar, yo."

by Anonymousreply 68March 27, 2018 3:31 PM

There is a fiscal convention between the US and France, and specifically concerning visas for artists and athletes. This is probably why people like Olivia and Macaulay can easily get a carte de séjour. You pay primary taxes in the country you live in, and the rest of the taxes in the other if they're higher.

by Anonymousreply 69March 27, 2018 5:35 PM

So much left out. The heroin addiction, Pete Doherty, why he hasn't really worked besides voice work on Robert Chicken, why he lied in court etc. This interview is soft.
