So many openly gay actors....so DL must hate it so much.
The all gay cast of "Boys in the Band" speaks about the revival
by Anonymous | reply 197 | February 26, 2018 4:18 PM |
No, it's the director who is miscast.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 24, 2018 1:27 PM |
I love boys in the band. I think the movie is HILARIOUS. I have the original cast recording and its not so good. This cast and director is TRASH. BORING. I don't like any of these actors in anything. i support openly gay everything by the way.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 24, 2018 2:29 PM |
I support everything gay that's well-made.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 24, 2018 2:30 PM |
I dislike that photo. I don't know how the show will be, but I would like to be a fly on the wall.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 24, 2018 2:59 PM |
Tuc Watkins still looks yummy. I miss One Life To Live so much. David and Dorian forevah!
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 24, 2018 3:18 PM |
All-gay casts need to become a regular feature for every show.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 24, 2018 3:20 PM |
I thought the whole point of "acting" is that you don't have to be something to act it.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 24, 2018 4:48 PM |
Is that why they cast a str8-as-an-arrow WASP like Leonard Frey as a gay Jew, R7?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 24, 2018 4:56 PM |
I don't care about them being gay or not. I met Tuc Watkins years ago at B Bar and he was not very nice. We didn't even know him and he started talking shit about us to this girl who was with us from out of town. She came and told us. I thought he was cute up until that moment. We were like 24 at the time and he was older. But he was being nice to our face. This was like 10 years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 24, 2018 4:58 PM |
Interesting cast but I don't watch anything with Ryan Murphy's name attached to it so I'll have to give this one a miss.

[quote] Interesting cast but I don't watch anything with Ryan Murphy's name attached to it so I'll have to give this one a miss.
Him and Rob Marshall are the two gay directors I whose work I just can't stand. The latter especially since he's said nothing about Weinstein who helped him get a film career in the first place after that dishwater-dull [italic]Annie[/italic] remake almost killed it before it began (it wasn't better than the movie, just cheaper). Murphy cannot sustain an idea long enough for a series though he tries and tries, and the fact that he's a transcult sympathizer makes him suspect on those grounds alone; he's contributing to gay erasure.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 24, 2018 5:07 PM |
R11 whats gay erasure?

The story requires more detail. He just randomly started talking shit about strangers in a bar...? What was he saying...?

Yes, being part of the cultural group doesn't matter at all. That is why we still allow black roles to be done by white actors in blackface!

You can also add Bill Condon to that list. Gods and Monsters was very good but it hardly makes up for all the crap he's done since then.

Gayface is blackface.

[quote]You can also add Bill Condon to that list. Gods and Monsters was very good but it hardly makes up for all the crap he's done since then.
Condon is a better director than Marshall but his talents are wasted on substandard material that would still be substandard in anyone's hands (this means you, [italic]Twilight[/italic], which is only for those not old enough for [italic]True Blood[/italic]). Marshall and Murphy can spin gold into straw.

The cast could be good with a good director.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 24, 2018 5:26 PM |
R14 we met him. I can't remember and then my friend and I moved away. Tuc started talking to the girl. We were talking to other people. She came back to us visibly upset and said he was making fun of us. Calling us names or something. Long time ago. Maybe he started the conversation with how do you know these assholes? Haha. It was something like that and went on from there. It didn't stay with me like that. But whenever i see him pop up which is very rare. I don't think I've seen him really since actually but it definitely killed the crush i had. I believe her. She was so upset and wanted to get away from him and we did.

Mother-Tuc-er!

R18 i agree. I think he looks Very weird. I don't get when they cast him in very goodlooking roles. What are they all talking about in that video clip? I never took boys in the band that seriously. I thought it was just a funny psycho thriller with gay guys. I thought that was the breakthrough. I didn't know it was meant to be a statement and i never felt offended by it. Whats really going on? This version looks boring as hell.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 24, 2018 5:35 PM |
Yeah you probably earned his scorn but you would be oblivious to that.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 24, 2018 5:45 PM |

The movie is a classic and it's William Friedkin's best work. [italic]The Exorcist[/italic] sucked.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 24, 2018 5:55 PM |
How do you update a trite melodrama--especially the "phone call" game? I couldn't get through the original....I'm not a big fan of William Friedkin, but he wasn't the problem.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 24, 2018 5:59 PM |
You don't. You set it in the era i which it was originally set. This was gay life at the cusp of Stonewall. This was right before we started taking the rage we direct at each other and started directing it at our enemies. We need to start doing that again in real life.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 24, 2018 6:13 PM |
R26 R27 oh please. I didn't know who he was and didn't care. I don't even know how or why we even talked to him. I thought he was a goodlooking older guy and then....BUT you arebprobably right. It was all us. I am sure tuc watkins is nothing but an angel. đŸ˜†

False equivalence, R33.

Yes, being gay is the same as the character's job.
It is odd to me. Trans people are so insistent that trans characters should be played by trans actors.
Say you are happy about gay characters being played by gay guys on a gay board...and you get attacked for it.

What we are not happy about is the choice of director.

by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 24, 2018 9:48 PM |
The casting could be worse. It could have turned into a star vehicle for NPH and David Burtka as Michael and Donald. Worse yet, they could have cast Danny Pintauro, who isn't even good enough for the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theater.

I saw the movie and it made me cringe. I realize that it's an important period piece, but they were all so hateful and self-loathing, it made me sad. Maybe it's a generational thing, I don't know. BITB was long before my time. Personally, I think it should stay as a period piece. It's like reviving Amos and Andy, imho.

by Anonymous | reply 57 | January 24, 2018 10:46 PM |
R53 Maybe you don't but you have to agree so far the reasons given here are so trivial & petty that it's hard to ignore the underlying homophobia & yes misogyny which btw isn't just hatred of the female sex but hatred of anything feminine. Gay men are equated with femininity. Ryan Murphy is a competent director. He may lose focus sometimes as his series goes on but this isn't a series. This revival is so timely honestly. There is much potential here to make this a superlative play. Don't get the dismissal here.

I heard the super talented theater veteran Joe Montello was directing. Btw what's the problem with Ryan Murphy? He did a good job directing the Emmy nominated The Normal Heart. He has a few misses but considering the number of shows he creates he is very good.

Mantello I could live with.

Movie made me cringe as a young gay guy in early 80s. Not enough distance from the stereotypes.... Then by the 90's I thought the movie was pretty good! Not I actually enjoy the social commentary of it.
A few of those guys are handsome, by the way. The picture is revealing with all those gay faces together. Quinto, Bomer, and the latino(?) I don't know, bottom center.

R45 phew you took the words right out of my mouth
R46 I do believe Alan was closeted, and that he was coming to tell Michael that he had feelings for him. Because he’s very specific about wanting to speak to Michael and only Michael, and it must be something important for him to cry and show up uninvited. But when he sees how bitter and angry Michael has become, he changes his mind and stays closeted.

R83 - Exactly.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | January 25, 2018 6:44 PM |
This show will have strong box office mostly because of the names in the cast. Jim Parsons alone will bring in lots of audiences. This is also a pre-Stonewall historical drama. Stereotypes exist because the stereotypic behavior exists in real life. Almost all the men in this cast are from an era where being gay was a crime in many places and a grounds for firing almost everywhere. It's a play. If you don't like it, write your own.
I'm also thrilled to find out that Mart Crowley is still alive.

But I'd be surprised if most if not all of the best seats (in this theater the first 6 rows or so) aren't gone by then. It's scheduled for slightly less than 11 weeks. Take a look at the seating chart. It's a small theater. If the reviews are good (on June 1st) for a show with this many popular actors I would expect the rest of the tickets to sell out very quickly.

The elephant in the room left unmentioned here is nebbishy Jim Parsons who is totally miscast as the piss-elegant, cashmere-wearing, mean-spirited Michael, the host of the party. I can't believe I'm the first poster to bring this up.
Although maybe he'll be so different from traditional casting that it will bring something fresh and quirky to the proceedings.

When I heard Matt Boner was in the cast I just assumed he was playing Larry since everyone talks about how gorgeous Larry is (and, Keith Prentice who originated the role in the play and movie was HOT). Imagine my shock when I found out Andy 'Jerry Mahoney' Rannels would be Larry. I also don't get Jim Parsons as Michael. Too weird looking. NPH would have been better but I guess then they would have had to cast David Burtka as an older fat Cowboy or something.

I applaud everyone involved. That's one jarring cast photo. Because we never see anything like it outside porn. It's a labour of love and respect to bring this to the stage. Professional critics got nothing on the critical mass anymore. The movie was a mess of stereotypes, self pity and pointed bitchery. I guess it was honest for the time, but it's not very funny. I hope they will preface it in some way because the audience will be young and like me, find little to relate to. It is not a great work, it needs context. All the "long day's journey into night" plays, where all is revealed in one evening on a single set are tiring even in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf or O'Neil. Not sure how successful the Boys in the Bar will be critically. But good on them for trying. I guess the stereotypes are real but I would kill myself if that's what gay life looked like.

It's not a movie, so the "floaty" camera work (I especially hate it in the musical numbers because it's overused so much that by now it's just so fucking generic) won't be an issue unless they tape it for TV.

The people saying Jim Parsons is miscast are nuts. He is a great actor & the role is tailor made for him (a bitchy Southerner quick with a cutting line? he basically already played a slightly softer version of this character in A NORMAL HEART to much acclaim).

Also, the text of the play does not talk about Larry being hot, only him being promiscuous. It talks about Hank being attractive & Donald having classically chiseled features. All of that fits.

That young cowboy guy is from Desperate Housewives no? Matt Bomer is forever handsome. He's not beautiful anymore and he's better for that IMO. I have no idea who plays who because the movie is a BAD memory. Quinto must play someone bitchy and ugly inside. I assume. Some fine actors are in this ensemble. The cast feels right and looks important. NPH would only ruin all that. Some y'all want 55 year old Ricky Martin as the trade?
by Anonymous | reply 121 | January 25, 2018 11:49 PM |
R9, I'm so sorry that happened. It's possible that the girl was lying or got it wrong; It's possible she was telling the truth.
Actors can be jerks.
It's hard to admire anyone in the celebrity world because they're rarely what we hope they are.
In fact, in some cases, they can turn out to be horrible people.

R121 Quinto does in fact play the (almost) heartless bitchy character, lol. He will be great at it.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | January 26, 2018 12:11 AM |
Lol, how many fucking hair dryers do you think they went through blowing out the boys' hair for that promo photo? Even Jim Parsons' toupee looks like a microwaved hot dog someone forgot to poke with a fork

That's not unique to show business.

In the original movie, beefcakey porn star Robert Letourneaux played Cowboy. In this production they made him into a handsome pocket gay twink. as played by Charlie Carver.

I always thought it was funny that the most effeminate flamboyantly 'gay' character in the play 'Emory' was played so well by heterosexual actor Cliff Gorman in the film. Dark hair with bangs, ecru colored shirt with tan trim.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | January 26, 2018 12:37 AM |
Some thought that there was no way that Gorman couldn't have been gay; he was that convincing in the part. The cast & he got along well.
When handsome Robert LaTourneaux became deathly ill with AIDS, Gorman and his wife moved LaTourrneaux into their home and nursed him until his death.

R127 LeTournaux hadn’t done porn yet when he was cast in BOYS. He was just a hot guy they spotted on Fire Island. Sadly he got into porn & escorting later because he had developed a drug problem.

Cliff Gorman was a brilliant actor who left us too soon. Much too soon. And he never achieved the success he deserved. It's a shame he didn't get to recreate his Tony award winning performance as Lenny Bruce in the film version but Fosse did cast him in All That Jazz as an actor playing a Lenny Bruce type comic in a film. There's an interesting documentary about the making of Boys in the Band and I'm sure you can find it online somewhere. When I first saw the movie I wanted Larry Luckinbill sooooooooo badly.

Yeah I like Charlie but he isn't exactly a sexy slab of beefcake like the Cowboy was.

I think Charlie Carver can do beefcake just fine.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | January 26, 2018 1:24 PM |
I don't think charlie has beauty like the script describes. Cliff Gorman was a brilliant actor. It's a crime he didn't win an oscar for Emory. At least nominated. His career was robbed. And a nice guy too. They finish last. Only the scumbags get praised. Especially back then. Fuck hollyweird.

Sticking with the openly gay actors theme, Dino Fetscher's sexy self would be a cool pic. Give him a nice introduction to American audiences.

As someone else said, Larry was slutty, but I don't remember dialog about how hot he is.
The only character who is textually supposed to be gorgeous was The Cowboy from what I remember.

One of my bitchy fag hags once said Andrew reminds her of Caroline Rhea (who played one of the witch aunts on Sabrina). I think she was spot on.

by Anonymous | reply 145 | January 26, 2018 2:37 PM |
I think we always assume Larry is the gorgeous one because the role was originated on stage and screen by a hunk and always seems to be played by a hot actor. Donald and Hank are also played by good looking men. The rest are usually fugly.

Isn't there a scene in the early part of the film where the actor playing Donald (Frederic.....something?) takes a shower in Michael's apartment, or changes his shirt for some reason.....or something? We see him shirtless in any case. Is that in the play? Will Ryan Murphy be sure it's inserted into the play, if not, for Matt Bomer?
For an all male gay play, it's rather shocking to realize there's no nudity!

Donald changes his shirt. Maybe he changes into one of Michael's shirts? Can't remember. The implication is he and Michael are fuck buddies. Though it would be hard to picture Jim Parsons getting pounded by Bomer.

You know Ryan Murphy wants to make it a movie. He is no doubt counting on good reviews and box office to secure a deal to make a film version.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | January 29, 2018 10:56 PM |
The play isn't good enough to do film version. It is of historical interest only.
The Hollywood Winsteins will says it's like that last Agatha Christies movie. It needs car crashes and 30% Negro cast. Because Badd-Ass equals cash.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | January 29, 2018 10:58 PM |
Will it get good reviews tho? I fear that many journalists and a lot of the younger audience won't be so welcoming. The play was shown in London in 2016 and it was deemed 'outdated' by a few reviewers. I know that New York isn't London, but still...
Let me clarify that I love the movie and I'd go see the play if I lived nearby.

Didn't the original cast also open the show in London? And Kenneth Nelson loved it so much he stayed? Between originating the show off broadway then London (?) and the movie they must have been burned out before they moved on. I remember there were several touring companies of the play out at once and MGM's own Carlton Carpenter took over as Michael in NYC at one point.
by Anonymous | reply 186 | January 30, 2018 12:56 AM |
R162,I did see the "sequel" (called "The Men From the Boys") in San Francisco years ago. The play got mixed to negative reviews and I believe didn't go anywhere else.
I was always curious about the fate of the characters after the fateful birthday party. Did Micheal change for the better? Did anyone die? The play takes place in the present day, and we find out:
Michael is in AA, lives in the same apartment, and has make progress in being "nicer" and more accepting of himself. Still single.
Donald is an alcoholic realtor living in the Hamptons. He's single.
Emory is still Emory, witty and out. Single.
Bernard has settled into a heterosexual marriage.
Larry and Hank made it work and were still a couple when (spoiler) Larry dies of pancreatic cancer.
Harold is still the acerbic, wiity man he was in the film. At the end of the play we find out he is HIV positive.
No mention of Larry or Cowboy.
They are gathered at Michael's apartment following Larry's funeral. There's a selection of younger men (friends of the group) around reflecting the mindset of today's gay men. One goes off to trick with Donald, one goes off to start something with Hank.
