Czechia is just starting to catch on- some maps are using the old term Czech republic and others are changing to Czechia. I read somewhere that the slow uptake is because some people confuse Czechia with Chechnya.

Just about a week ago, I was reading about Eastern European geography- I must be a bigger nerd than I realized-and saw that online.

It took at least a decade before I could call Ukraine "Ukraine" without feeling weird about omitting the leading "the" (as in, "the Ukraine").

Oddly, my grandparents (first-generation Ukranian-Americans) always called it "Ukrania" (which, presumably, was close to what their parents called it). My guess is that the country's name (written in Cyrillic) probably ends with a vowel pronounced something like "ya" that gets Romanized as "e", and gets (mis)pronounced by (American?) English-speakers as "silent e".

"Czhechia" is how most of its neighbors and other European countries call it, both historically and currently - "Ché-hee-ya" (with the stress on the first syllable). Those countries include (but not limited to) Greece, Bulgaria, Spain, Russia, Poland, the Netherlands and some Scandinavian countries. The Germans have a slight variation (pronounced "Che-hee-yen").

In 2016 the Czech gov't officially adopted "Czechia" as a shorter, punchier, alternative name. Because "Czech Republic" sounds too cumbersome & a mouthful. But (some) Czechs are nonplussed by the new alternative name - because they call it "Česka [Cheska] Republika" or "Česko" [Chesko] for short, AFAIK.

They could've gone with "Czesko" as a short name instead, but it sounds a bit colloquial.

Ukraine is not "Ukrania" in the local language - it's "Ukraïna". The umlauf above the "i" denotes a long sound and a stress on that vowel - "Ukra - ee- na". That's also how many other Eastern European countries call it.

Btw, the easiest way to annoy an Ukrainian is to say "The" Ukraine. Don't know why it vexes them so much - "The" is almost like an expression of respect and honor.

My only guess is they're grammatical purists. "The" should generally only be used for countries and islands named in the plural (the Netherlands, the Seychelles...).

Well, it could be because a lot of the Bel Ami guys identify as straight and have girlfriends.
