How does the gay community rally against bearding and closetedness among celebrities and athletes?

by Anonymousreply 108March 3, 2018 9:43 PM

Forced outing is considered impolite and an awful capital sin against your fellow gays so I guess we do nothing other than bitching and speculating over here.

by Anonymousreply 1January 21, 2018 4:05 PM

I don’t agree, R1.

by Anonymousreply 2January 21, 2018 4:08 PM

Obsessively create threads about him on DL?

by Anonymousreply 3January 21, 2018 4:09 PM

[quote]Forced outing is considered impolite and an awful capital sin against your fellow gays so I guess we do nothing other than bitching and speculating over here.

It’s 2018 and this is still a thought. That’s because gay people...GAY PEOPLE...say this:

[quote]outing is considered impolite and an awful capital sin against your fellow gays

and this:

[quote]we do nothing

by Anonymousreply 4January 21, 2018 4:11 PM

Get a life and mind our own business?

by Anonymousreply 5January 21, 2018 4:11 PM

And that. ^^

by Anonymousreply 6January 21, 2018 4:11 PM

On a gossip site.

by Anonymousreply 7January 21, 2018 4:12 PM

I was being ironic, R4

by Anonymousreply 8January 21, 2018 4:12 PM

Well, gossip isn't really "rallying" against anything, is it? Everyone gossips. Beyond that, get a life.

by Anonymousreply 9January 21, 2018 4:13 PM

First you need to accept there is no such thing as "the gay community". There is no community...just a bunch of people who use each other and knife each other in the back.

If a celebrity is closeted and they have posed no threat, then let them be. If the person is closeted AND spewing homophobia that threatens the the safety and equality of gays, then out them.

by Anonymousreply 10January 21, 2018 4:16 PM

This is why Gay as Blazes is six feet under instead of Tumblring from his dorm room...

by Anonymousreply 11January 21, 2018 4:17 PM

out all of them.

by Anonymousreply 12January 21, 2018 4:17 PM

You aren’t comfortable in your own sexuality if you need to manage the sexuality of strangers...

by Anonymousreply 13January 21, 2018 4:19 PM

This. "If a celebrity is closeted and they have posed no threat, then let them be. If the person is closeted AND spewing homophobia that threatens the the safety and equality of gays, then out them."

But not this: "There is no community...just a bunch of people who use each other and knife each other in the back." While I agree there is a gay population, rather than a "gay community," the second part of your statement is homophobic and self-hating as fuck. It also doesn't align with actual history or the facts on the ground. People are fucked up and mean everywhere, and some gays are no exception, but don't dump your verbal diarrhea on gay people in general when many of us, and many of the brave people we admire, do not resemble your remarks at all. Thx.

by Anonymousreply 14January 21, 2018 4:24 PM

R14:

Your assertion that outing someone who is acting badly as revenge or punishment also drips with homophobia

It reinforces the notion being gay is a punishment for being naughty

by Anonymousreply 15January 21, 2018 4:29 PM

R3 and when they come out , slag them off as effeminate attention whores who can't ever do anything right ever again

by Anonymousreply 16January 21, 2018 4:33 PM

That poll is so depressing.

by Anonymousreply 21January 21, 2018 4:52 PM

I’m sorry, R1. I can’t tell which is funny or serious on this topic.

by Anonymousreply 22January 21, 2018 4:54 PM

Datalounge has helped me out so much in terms of who and what to boycott. DiCaprio, Cooper, Aaron Rodgers, Tyler Seguin, Kerry Rhodes—the list is endless. I appreciate DL for helping me identify the closeted. And, I boycott them.

by Anonymousreply 23January 21, 2018 5:05 PM

How exactly does one boycott a washed up mediocre athlete who hasn’t played in ages?

by Anonymousreply 24January 21, 2018 5:55 PM

It’s hard to sustain relationships with closeted men who think gayness is a dirty secret to be overcome or hidden.

by Anonymousreply 25January 21, 2018 6:23 PM

Off topic, R25, but a fair statement

by Anonymousreply 26January 21, 2018 6:28 PM

I don't mind dating closeted guys. It means I don't have to pretend to like their families or friends. No in-laws is a big plus in my book.

by Anonymousreply 27January 21, 2018 11:20 PM

Compelling

by Anonymousreply 28January 21, 2018 11:48 PM

Being in the closet - ok by me (stars don't have to tell me about their sexual lives), bearding - huge NO.

by Anonymousreply 29January 22, 2018 4:28 PM

[quote]Do nothing, accept that bearding and closetedness is a fact of life

Go fuck yourself, OP, because I sure won't.

by Anonymousreply 30January 22, 2018 4:32 PM

How about gays who abstain from homosexual activity?

by Anonymousreply 31January 22, 2018 4:46 PM

You mean Uncle Toms, R31?

by Anonymousreply 32January 22, 2018 4:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 33January 22, 2018 5:03 PM

I think too many young men wear beards—they’d look much better clean shaven. And the big Duck Dynasty beards look horrible on anyone (with the possible exception of Santa Claus.)

And I am unanimous in that!

by Anonymousreply 34January 22, 2018 5:12 PM

They need to come face to face with the reality that they are setting a bad example for their gay fans.

by Anonymousreply 35January 22, 2018 5:22 PM

They have no obligation to live for others

by Anonymousreply 36January 22, 2018 5:43 PM

How many actually are closeted as opposed to desperate fantasies of posters here though?

by Anonymousreply 37January 22, 2018 5:47 PM

Another fair statement

by Anonymousreply 38January 22, 2018 6:06 PM

True. It’s mass delusion here

by Anonymousreply 39January 22, 2018 7:04 PM

Celebrity closetedness is as annoying as anything, but it's not an important issue. They closet themselves because they make more money that way, and for that I blame the entertainment companies and corporate sponsors who won't hire the out more than the closet cases themselves.

There are much more important issues. Corrupt and treasonous government, oceans dying and climate change imperiling the future, declining wages and quality of life, etc. Some schmuck with a short career trying to make as much money as he can before he's a has-been, that's not really important enough to get worked up about.

by Anonymousreply 40January 22, 2018 10:30 PM

[quote]but it's not an important issue.

R40, people have been saying that about gay rights...forever. Oh well.

by Anonymousreply 41January 22, 2018 10:36 PM

[quote] How many actually are closeted as opposed to desperate fantasies of posters here though?

Like the boy next door who grew up to be the man that got away?

by Anonymousreply 42January 22, 2018 10:36 PM

[QUOTE]people have been saying that about gay rights

Celebrities being in the closet has fuck all to do with gay rights. The only people who try and convince themselves otherwise are those who try to find reasons to excuse their desire to out people.

by Anonymousreply 43January 22, 2018 10:38 PM

Sure R43. You’re preaching to the choir. I support the closet, feel gay rights are not as important as jobs, etc,. It’s a loss cause. Bitching about the closet is pointless. I’m on your side now.

by Anonymousreply 44January 22, 2018 10:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 46January 22, 2018 10:51 PM

Closets are for clothes.

by Anonymousreply 47January 22, 2018 10:53 PM

That poll depresses me beyond belief. Just depressing. “Do nothing”. The gay community from the 70s is long gone. Gone.

by Anonymousreply 48January 22, 2018 10:54 PM

How are we supposed to prove it?

by Anonymousreply 49January 22, 2018 10:55 PM

What is the argument in favor of boycotting a celebrity suspected of being closeted as a way of fighting for gay rights?

by Anonymousreply 50January 22, 2018 10:58 PM

Some of them are afraid of losing fans by coming out, especially if their fan base includes old grandmas and fraus.

by Anonymousreply 51January 22, 2018 11:00 PM

All the more to do nothing. Apply “do nothing” to every aspect of every gay identity. Eh, most do already.

by Anonymousreply 52January 22, 2018 11:03 PM

Outing celebrities is one of the worst ideas ever.

All it does is reinforce the notion that gays are a bunch of nasty queeny gossips who try and bring other people down.

It does not make anyone feel good about being gay.

It does not make young gays feel good that some actor was exposed as a gay man by vengeful Eldergays. All they think is "will some crazed Eldergay try and out me before I'm ready?"

I know that in the 70s you all thought it was a good idea.

But that's like talking about shit that happened during Reconstruction in the middle of the first World War. (1870s —>1918)

by Anonymousreply 53January 22, 2018 11:11 PM

[quote]All it does is reinforce the notion that gays are a bunch of nasty queeny gossips who try and bring other people down.

There is so much shame attached to being gay. So much shame. Homophobic shame.

by Anonymousreply 54January 22, 2018 11:15 PM

It’s not your place to tell others how to live or identify. Tolerance

by Anonymousreply 55January 22, 2018 11:17 PM

That's bullshit R54

If French people got together and "outed" someone as French who was claiming to be Italian, they'd look like a bunch of nasty fuckers too.

It has to do with letting people make their own decisions and living their own lives. No one died and appointed you Ruler.

And if you think outing people isn't a form of homophobia, you're even more fucked up than you sound.

It's the same line of thinking that causes Boys In the Band Syndrome, where DLEGs hiss and call people they think are gay "Miss" and "her" and all that.

It's thinking "well if I'm a freak and everyone knows it, I'm going to point out all the other freaks too, so I can prove I'm not the only one."

by Anonymousreply 56January 22, 2018 11:27 PM

Sure R56.

by Anonymousreply 57January 22, 2018 11:29 PM

And again, most of the people that DL is so sure are in the closet simply aren't. So for all of you going on about how badly it serves the gay community them being in the closet - why not support openly gay talent instead of trying to make believe every attractive straight guy is secretly gay? That's something that could actually get the closeted ones to come out.

Instead, the openly gay ones get ignored at best, or mocked and insulted, whilst the straight get worshipped and adored.

by Anonymousreply 58January 22, 2018 11:30 PM

Bingo R58

by Anonymousreply 59January 22, 2018 11:34 PM

Yep.

by Anonymousreply 60January 22, 2018 11:35 PM

R58 wins

by Anonymousreply 61January 22, 2018 11:35 PM

Sure.

by Anonymousreply 62January 22, 2018 11:35 PM

And the reason R58 is self-hatred

In their minds, Gay = Inferior.

So out celebs are inferior.

They want to out the allegedly closeted ones as a way of proving that "even though people think he's hot, he's a nelly queen just like me." And then they type shit like "Miss Bradley Cooper" or "Miss Hugh Jackman" and think they're #winning

Pathetic actually.

by Anonymousreply 63January 22, 2018 11:36 PM

by Anonymousreply 64January 22, 2018 11:36 PM

Crazy. Just hit "Ignore" on the "Sure" troll and fuck if it isn't the OP

Who had written half the posts on here and truly believes we should boycott every actor DL's Flyoverstani Eldergays decide is a homosexual, e.g. every decent looking one.

I guess that leaves lesbian porn and Abe Vigoda movies.

by Anonymousreply 71January 23, 2018 12:04 AM

Right.

by Anonymousreply 72January 23, 2018 12:07 AM

Agree with R58. The focus should be on supporting out celebrities and athletes instead of mostly ignoring them or worse. Fix that first.

by Anonymousreply 73January 23, 2018 12:13 AM

Right.

by Anonymousreply 74January 23, 2018 12:14 AM

r73 there are reasons they're not supported. In the sport world, they're usually fame whores who are using it to promote and/or further their careers in lieu of being at the actual talent level to which they aspire. They're also hot messes, i.e. Michael Sam.

Philosophically, I can see why people push for them to be out because IMHO it would make a huge difference, where ignorant straights equate gay with female. As Susan St James said of Rock Hudson (paraphrased), you can't say you hate him now, because you've been a fan for years. He changed people's perceptions.

Having said that, people have a right to identify however they like. I would never take that right away for a larger issue, because I think individual rights are important. (I'd make an exception for anti-gay legislators in some cases.)

by Anonymousreply 77January 23, 2018 11:30 AM

[quote]GLEE solved society's coming out issues and made gay acceptance the norm.

How? By not only reinforcing every gay stereotype in the book but selling it to a new generation as the only acceptable way to be gay, and by selling us out to the transcult towards the end?

by Anonymousreply 78January 23, 2018 11:36 AM

Right.

by Anonymousreply 79January 23, 2018 11:48 AM

Don't know about the sports world. But in Hollywood, keeping gay actors and actresses in the closet, is a very profitable business for a lot of people. And they will fight tooth and nail to keep that income stream coming in, including exaggerating what a threat it would be to gay clients careers, even when they dont believe it themselves.

by Anonymousreply 80January 23, 2018 11:58 AM

You have to support out gay celebs and gay entertainment. Hollywood is only as liberal as the profit returns

by Anonymousreply 81January 23, 2018 12:05 PM

Same opinion as R29

'Being in the closet - ok by me (stars don't have to tell me about their sexual lives), bearding - huge NO.'

by Anonymousreply 82January 23, 2018 12:28 PM

If the closet is so cherished by both gay and straight people, that is no life to lead. 40 years ago, Harvey Milk spoke against the closet, 40 years later, nothing has changed and the closet is still a dominating and protected way of life. 40 years from now, it will still be the same. It’s no life, but support out gay people and try to find and associate those that do. It’s hard to find, especially based on that poll, but finding those thst don’t shame being gay is the only way to not end up angry, frustrated or depressed. But, I can see why depression and suicide is so prevalent amongst gays.

by Anonymousreply 83January 23, 2018 12:36 PM

[quote] You have to support out gay celebs and gay entertainment.

You have to do better than retreads of 20-year-old minstrel shows and creepy pederastic crap set in a country with a history of fascism.

by Anonymousreply 84January 23, 2018 12:51 PM

One should out only those whose closeted life is so twisted that they publicly speak and work against gays.

by Anonymousreply 85January 23, 2018 12:59 PM

[QUOTE]there are reasons they're not supported. In the sport world, they're usually fame whores who are using it to promote and/or further their careers in lieu of being at the actual talent level to which they aspire. They're also hot messes, i.e. Michael Sam.

The thing is most athletes are fame whores, and most use anything they can to try and advance their career past their talent. And in case you haven't noticed, a metric fuckload of straight athletes are also hot messes. Why are you expecting so much more from a gay athlete than is expected from a straight one?

What you're basically saying is you only want a perfect super-athlete to come out, and anything less than that isn't good enough? Gee, wonder why so few athletes come out then.

by Anonymousreply 86January 23, 2018 1:00 PM

As long as they aren't using their power and position to hurt us (see a fuckton of hypocritical right-wing preachers and politicians) I figure people have a right to live as they choose.

by Anonymousreply 87January 23, 2018 1:03 PM

Yes, career and money are motives to stay in the closet, but y’all act as if regular people aren’t closeted too. We live in a world that says homosexuality is immoral, perverted, threatening, illegal, and shameful. That is the main reason people, famous or not, remain closeted or in denial.

by Anonymousreply 88January 23, 2018 1:13 PM

The heteros are the real perverts and they are greater in number. They're the ones projecting their immorality onto us. Why do we continue to tolerate it?

by Anonymousreply 89January 23, 2018 1:27 PM

Because we never know what is truly going on in a person's life, outing someone can be a dangerous proposition.

That being said, anyone who does choose to live in the closet is harming the gay population at large by diminishing our footprint in the public's consciousness. It is a great disservice, not only to themselves but every LGBT person, young and old, who has ever hoped for a better life. Being closeted is selfish. Sometimes that selfishness is justified (when your personal safety is at risk) and sometimes it is not (when it is done for the love of money.)

ENCOURAGING someone to stay in the closet, against their own inclination, is downright monstrous and evil.

In all scenarios, accepting the closet implies that you accept that homosexuality is somehow dirty, wrong, shameful or less than.

Bearding is even worse. Bearding harms not only the person in the closet but innocent bystanders as well. It is not okay to ruin a woman's life because you can't accept yours.

The "everyone you think is gay is straight" contingency on DL is as annoying as the "everyone you think is straight is gay" contingency.

Is every Hollywood actor gay? Of course not.

But let me tell you, as someone who works in the industry, the celluloid closet is a deep, cavernous, soul-sucking blackhole. The number of people trapped in that vortex would shock you to the core.

In polling, 35% of West Hollywood identifies as openly gay, yet only 14% of actors identify as openly gay according to SAG. Let that sink in.

That is only the tip of the iceberg.

I studied film at a state-funded arts conservatory and I guarantee you that more than 14% of the people in that arts school were gay. I know this because I lived it. They used to joke that we needed a "straight pride" club instead of "gay pride" club so that the straights could better find one another in that vast sea of gayness.

If you don't believe my personal experience, take a look at the drama club in your own high school. Did all those gay kids manage to pray away the gay before they made it to the silver screen? Do you really think Hollywood is just THAT good at sussing out the homosexuals?

Or how about this: take a look at the percent of gay agents, producers, editors, screenwriters, and directors... then compare that to SAG's 14% number. It isn't even close. Gay men have always been disproportionately drawn to the arts. I don't know why, but we all know it is true. However, instead of seeing a disproportionate number of openly gay actors on screen, you see fewer. Many of the people in that SAG poll stated clearly that they can't get parts BECAUSE they are one of the 14% who dared not to stay in the closet.

Even I've been told to stay in the closet "just in case" and I work behind the scenes, not in front of the camera.

This is not healthy and this is not okay.

Yes, odds are, your favorite celebrity is straight, but many celebrities who never entered your bedroom fantasies are gay and they are fucking terrified of losing their dream because of it.

Every person who advocates allowing Hollywood to continue closeting and bearding is just as guilty as the right wing zealots that ferment hate in rural America.

The GP's surprise at how frequent sexual harassment was in Hollywood will be nothing compared to their surprise when gay actors have finally had it and come out in mass. It won't happen in the next 30 years, it may not even happen in my lifetime, but there will be another "Time's Up" movement and every story of every actor who was scared shitless and told that they had to live in a closet or lose every dream they ever dreamt... those stories will bleed across the headlines from the Times to the Post and I hope the people who helped keep them in the closet feel nothing but shame.

The number one thing YOU can do to help these actors is to SUPPORT performers who are already out. Demand Hollywood stop straight-washing gay roles, follow gay actors on twitter (even if you don't think they are hot), purchase music from gay musicians, and speak with your wallet at the box office.

by Anonymousreply 90January 23, 2018 2:00 PM

I'll only support gay Republican celebrities. There, I said it.

by Anonymousreply 91January 23, 2018 2:08 PM

R90 I agree with every word. Finally somebody wrote an obvious truth that there are many gay men in the arts and it's absolutely possible and nothing surprising that probably even 50% or more of actors are gay. I really hate this whining "on DL every handsome actor is gay": Sorry, it can be true. And bearding is disgusting. I always have the feeling it's like a violation of human rights and a huge discrimination because gay actors don't have big chances for a career in HW.

by Anonymousreply 92January 23, 2018 5:37 PM

Your feelings are garbage

Your pet issue of closeted celebs doesn’t even crack the top 1000 of human rights violations...

Perhaps the openly gay or nonmasculine actors and athletes never attain to the level of stardom that straight-identified or conventionally masculine performers do. Maybe there is a conscious or subconscious ceiling on the careers of gay and gender nonconforming people

However, just because celebrities being forced into the closet isn't as pressing an issue as Syrians being forced out of their country, doesn't mean it is an issue no person should care about. I can hold two or more thoughts in my head at once. Most people can.
