Government is shutting down!

There is no way they can reach 60 votes tonight.

by Anonymousreply 126January 20, 2018 3:35 PM

Trump really wants to go to that party tomorrow. And get some golfing in.

Presidenting is no fun!

Since the Government has not worked in the past year, I guess nothing will change then.

by Anonymousreply 2January 20, 2018 2:56 AM

Shumer and McConnell just walked off the floor to discuss...They may vote again.

by Anonymousreply 3January 20, 2018 2:58 AM

There goes my early tax refund.

by Anonymousreply 4January 20, 2018 3:01 AM

R2, what changes is that a shitload of things that were happening despite the horrible governance of the GOP will now shut down and millions of people will not get paid. Keep this going long enough and this will hurt the entire country.

by Anonymousreply 5January 20, 2018 3:01 AM

Shit, R4, the last time I looked at the IRS site a few days ago, several of the tax forms I need were the 2016 versions.

Poor senate interns are tired and sleepy.

That prospect reminds me of what Dorothy Parker said when told that "Silent Cal" Coolidge had died:

Relax, R5. I get that. It was a joke. You must be a blast at parties.

by Anonymousreply 9January 20, 2018 3:14 AM

Shut the thing DOWN!

by Anonymousreply 10January 20, 2018 3:18 AM

Let the country hurt. Particularly the Midwest. They fucked us all voting for this asshole. Let them starve.

McConnell is scum. I wish that fucker would just stroke out live on television.

by Anonymousreply 24January 20, 2018 4:19 AM

by Anonymousreply 25January 20, 2018 4:21 AM

by Anonymousreply 26January 20, 2018 4:25 AM

by Anonymousreply 27January 20, 2018 4:25 AM

by Anonymousreply 56January 20, 2018 4:56 AM

McConnell is correct. Had he and Ryan been willing to put the previously-negotiated bipartisan solution to a vote, it would have easily passed in both chambers, with full support from the Democrats.

[quote]How do you think this Government Shutdown will affect the Women's March this weekend?

by Anonymousreply 69January 20, 2018 5:16 AM

[quote]The Democrats voted against children's healthcare to show support for illegals. People affected aren't going to care about Schumer's spin.

LOL... Speaking of "spin." And genuinely pathetic spin at that. Sorry, chuckles, but it ain't gonna work that way.

The response to someone blaming the Democrats is to point out a few things:

1. There is a bipartisan bill that would easily pass both the House and Senate, with full Democratic cooperation, if Ryan and McConnell actually allowed the bill to come to the floor for a vote.

2. Republicans refused to negotiate with Democrats on the House bill that was just passed. And McConnell has refused to negotiate with Democrats in the Senate.

3. At the time Trump broke DACA, the Republicans insisted that they would fix this before this started hurting people. They didn't. They have repeatedly insisted that they want to fix this but there is no effort underway, and no plans for such an effort, to actually fix this. And no reason to believe that any such effort will take place in this election year.

4. Over 90% of Americans want CHIP funded and the DACA recipients to stay in the U.S.

Nice try, though.

The trolls aren't really trying very hard tonight, are they? They've seen the polls, so they know who will be blamed.

It's the guy who blew up the negotiations last week, just days after he promised he'd sign whatever they delivered to him.

It's the leaders of the Senate and the House who are refusing to allow a bipartisan bill (that will easily pass) to be brought to the floor for a vote.

It's the leaders of the Senate and the House who are refusing to do what they promised to do months ago and what the overwhelming majority of American want: protect the people affected by Trump blowing up DACA.

It's the party in charge of the House, the Senate, and the Presidency.

It's inevitable that someday the filibuster will be done away with. Trump should push now for the nuclear option for appropriations. The spin is that the GOP "controls" the Senate even though it's not true that they have 60 votes. They should take control and pass the bill to pay the military, build the wall, extend CHIP and abolish the medical device tax.

by Anonymousreply 98January 20, 2018 6:08 AM

McConnell is refusing to allow a vote on a bipartisan bill that would pass and would end this nonsense, R98. Sounds like "control" to me.

by Anonymousreply 99January 20, 2018 6:09 AM

Even better for Democrats is that Republicans are on record as *wanting* to do what Democrats are insisting they do. So Republicans are balking at passing a bill that they had previously insisted that they wanted to pass.

Catching up with Twitter and I found this interesting: Quite a bit of reporting that Trump came to an agreement he could pretty much live with with Schumer, but subsequently that was undermined by Kelly and Miller, for whom the compromise wasn't *quite* Nazi enough. [quote]“Well, if you say who gets fired it always has to be the top,” Trump said. “I mean, problems start from the top and they have to get solved from the top and the president’s the leader. And he’s got to get everybody in a room and he’s got to lead.”

[quote]He said that further down in history, “when they talk about the government shutdown, they’re going to be talking about the president of the United States, who the president was at that time.”

[quote]“They’re not going to be talking about who was the head of the House, the head the Senate, who’s running things in Washington,” Trump said.

[quote]“So I really think the pressure is on the president,” he added.

That was Trump, of course, referring to the shutdown in 2013.

[quote]Pity the Republicans couldn’t separate CHIP so it could be passed and DACA could be debated on its own merits.

Yup. Not to mention that the Republican leadership has repeatedly expressed support for both, insisting that they would pass these fixes. So Democrats are simply asking Republicans to do what they already said they wanted to do. And, of course, there's a bipartisan bill on the table that would do exactly that, and it would pass by a wide margin if Ryan and McConnell would allow it to come to the floor for a vote.

Right on, R123! Right the fuck on. They want to play this shit as if they have a fucking mandate. Those assholes do not have a fucking mandate, no matter how much they like to pretend their gerrymandering and voter suppression gives them one. 3 million voters say they don't have one and their monkey chattering his clever rhymes doesn't make it so.

Oh Erna R118. Just because the government shuts down doesn't mean you can't produce your scat videos. Be gone.
