Ten episodes starting in June. The teaser trailer looks good. I’m guessing the main character is primarily a composite of Rupert Murdoch and Sumner Redstone.
I get some serious American Psycho vibe from the trailer.

Just watched the trailer again and it looks good. Frank Rich is one of the producers.

Official trailer.
Looks exhausting and also straight as fuck.

Ohh how quaint HBO is still a thing.
Doesn't even look good enough to pirate.

Sounds like your Basic Boring Business Soap from the '80s, daytime or night.

Anybody watch the premiere last night? I thought it was pretty good.

No?
Meh. Next.

This show should be A LOT better with its pedigree, but it’s unfunny satire drama mishmash with extremely unlikable characters.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 10, 2018 4:06 PM |
Did this show even have anything gay related? If not, probably why it was renewed.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 11, 2018 8:15 PM |
This over reaching King Lear imitation is a bore. Not one character to respect or like. Rich white people fighting over power and money- boring.

The Culkin kid growed up nice.

HBO was never going to cancel a show with Frank Rich (Veep) as one of its showrunners after one season.

[quote] Sounds like your Basic Boring Business Soap from the '80s, daytime or night
If only this show were as good as an 80's soap. It's boring as fuck. None, and I mean absolutely NONE of the characters are likable. But the worst thing is that they aren't even unlikable either. They're just boring. And they are all unattractive. I could go to my local mall and find 20 people who are 100% better looking than this cast. The entire cast is so un-energetic and lethargic. So is the show
A Spanish soap is more interesting and I don't even know Spanish, but I know when I flick through the channels the Spanish soaps look like something's going on. Succession has nothing going on
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 12, 2018 1:46 AM |
The actress playing the daughter is attractive but zero eye candy amongst the male cast.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 12, 2018 11:21 PM |
r19 That was my first thought as well - a courtesy renewal that wouldn't shit up anyone's resume. I fully expect them to pull the plug next season.
Also, I'm slowly approaching a point where I won't watch a TV show that doesn't feature any gay characters. I'm sorry but there's so much good stuff out there that I don't need to put up with this shit in 2018. It's becoming as bad in my eyes as having an all-white cast. And judging by the trailer, this show is a double offender.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 13, 2018 12:30 AM |
Yeah, it is strange that there’s not one gay character in a show with an ensemble cast.

The Culkin character mentioned dick in the ass, I am assuming he is gay
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 18, 2018 8:14 AM |
Just like the HBO series “Looking”, I hated it and stopped watching because I couldn’t relate to any of. the characters. There’s no reason to watch if I don’t see “me” on the screen.
Boring!
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 18, 2018 11:15 AM |
The Culkin character is trying to manipulate the hot male trainer into some kind of sexual arrangement. Not sure why he jerked off all over the window.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 18, 2018 11:19 AM |
What's strange is the review I read said it was funny, not laugh out loud funny but they compared to Arrested Development. They need more eye candy. I think the Jeremy Strong is a good actor but definitely not nearly as hot as Mark Strong.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 18, 2018 11:27 AM |
It’s not funny - just reminds me of Trump and kids.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 18, 2018 12:18 PM |
[R30] I came here to see if anyone else was watching this show because Culkin’s character is hella gay. It’s kinda of pathetic that he’s manipulating the trainer instead of just being straight about wanting to fuck him. Surely his money can compensate for his lack of charm and looks
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 18, 2018 9:32 PM |
Didn’t Brock Yurich used to make cam videos where he’s showing his naked ass? I remember a link to one of those being posted in a thread on DL. I wonder if that was part of his audition tape for Succession!
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 18, 2018 10:48 PM |
Every one of the male characters alludes to gay sex and several of them look like they’d suck a cock to get ahead or are hiding behind a straight facade. It’s not a show about sex, but about power, wealth and validation. I think there’s potential to create a gay arc of a story and yes, some of it is funny in a calculated, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” bumbling kind of way. Just finished 3rd episode.

by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 20, 2018 11:53 AM |
I disagree, R38. I think the acting is terrific and the dialogue is intelligent and even witty at times. I don’t see how the constant bickering will sustain itself over ten episodes, though.

I’ve never liked Matthew McFadyen in anything but he’s very funny as Shiv’s fiance.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 23, 2018 4:58 AM |
This series should be called Rich Assholes. Not even one of the main characters is likeable or has any redeeming qualities. I don’t know if it’s Trump fatigue but watching a show of nothing but rich selfish narcissistic sociopaths isn’t entertaining. At least in shows about rich people like Dallas or Dynasty there were a few good characters you cared about. All these characters are being written or improvised to such insufferable extremes that it feels more like an episode of Oz.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | June 25, 2018 12:50 PM |
Matt McFadd is in this? I saw it OnDemand, but bypassed it because it's description didn't sound very interesting, but I do like Matt McFadd - he was in PBS "Little Dorrit" and of course he played Fitzwilliam Darcy to Keira Knightly's Elizabeth Bennet back in 2005.

I like it [italic]because[/italic] the characters are so rotten. And the oldest sons has a Don Jr. vibe about him that makes the show even more enjoyable to me.
I don't necessarily watch a TV series or movie to relate to or care about the characters. (That's why I love VEEP.)
Not everything needs some kind of moral compass. In fact, sometimes that's the point: there IS none.

R51, the only Brits in thr cast are Brian Cox (Logan) and Matthew McFadyen (Tom). Sarah Snook (Shiv) is Australian. Hiam Abbas (Marcia) is Iraeli. The rest are Americans. Most of the production team are Briish, though. The last two episodes were shot in England.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | July 4, 2018 1:17 PM |

R54 - I did a Wiki check and saw the ratings have been fairly consistent.
Certainly more people are watching this than were watching Here and Now.

R53-uhhh, WRONG. Its ratings aren’t in the toilet. It’s true there are people who hate it but there are people who LOVE it. Vinyl was too expensive to produce which is why HBO reneged on a Season 2. It won’t happen with this one.

R70, Harriet Walter plays Shiv’s mom. The last two episodes were shot in a castle in Gloucestershire, England.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | July 23, 2018 1:14 AM |
Last night’s episode was great. Kendall looks so much better with facial hair.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | July 23, 2018 2:01 PM |
Completely drawn in. Some of the dialogue is very well-written (the scene with the stepmom and the bimbo in New Mexico made me laugh) and the acting is fantastic, especially the father and Kendall.
None of the characters, except the father, is completely horrible and the theme of adult kids still jostling for a distant father's affection and approval, while navigating their own relationships, is universal.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | July 24, 2018 5:10 PM |

To add to what R67 said, you're wrong: the show is not losing viewers.
I made the argument @ R54 that viewership has been consistent.
In fact, the premier episode had 582,000 viewers and the one this past Sunday had 637,000.

[quote] (And isn’t like 90% of the cast from the UK? Here’s an idea - hire Americans who know how to do American accents)
Brian Cox's character is from Scotland just as Cox himself is.
Marcia is Israeli just as the actress who plays her is.
The only two characters who are playing Americans who are not Americans themselves are Siobhan (Sarah Snook is Australian) and Tom (Matthew MacFadyen is British), and they are both affecting decent American accents.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | July 31, 2018 2:46 PM |
There's only one mother of the children we haven't seen yet: Connor's mom. They've not even mentioned yet who she is or if she's still alive.
The mother of the other three children is Lady Caroline. Since the children don't have British accents they must have been raised in the US--they've not really explained that yet either.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | July 31, 2018 2:48 PM |
R84, the reclining blonde woman we see in the opening is supposed to be Caroline, I guess. Sharon Stone would have been great casting.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | July 31, 2018 4:40 PM |
R84, thr kids probably split their time between the US and the UK. Cheltenham was where Roman was put in a dog cage and that’s in England.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | July 31, 2018 4:41 PM |
I really like this show but the underground party scenes were awful. And didn't Shiv's fiance hook up with a trannie who shot in his mouth? But in the wedding scenes she was a bio woman. Can someone clear this up for me?
by Anonymous | reply 87 | July 31, 2018 4:52 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 90 | July 31, 2018 5:02 PM |
And didn't Shiv's fiance hook up with a trannie who shot in his mouth?
No, it was an actual (but very tall) woman, who later shows up at the wedding in the UK. Tom shot his wad in her mouth, and then she gave him a snowball (i.e. she passed his own load back into his mouth).
by Anonymous | reply 91 | July 31, 2018 5:07 PM |
No, Connor's mother is Logan's first wife. The mother of Kendall, Roman, and Shiv is Caroline Collingwood, Logan's second wife.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | July 31, 2018 5:11 PM |
Caroline looks too young to be Kendall’s mother but whatever.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | July 31, 2018 5:16 PM |

I watched half of the first episode weeks ago and was bored, and tuned out. Then I came back and binged the next few episodes last weekend, and am now hooked. I like the look, the dialogue and the dark humor. I hate several of the main characters, but that's what a good soap does, right?
Looking forward to the season finale, and the next batch of episodes in a year or so. Are we sure it has been renewed?
by Anonymous | reply 102 | August 3, 2018 10:32 PM |
If the dad doesn't croak, I have a sense the buyout of Waystar/Royco will be successful and the father will be ousted.

Good seaon finale. That poor server.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | August 6, 2018 3:40 AM |
It was a weird way to end the season. There's absolutely no tension about what will happen next season. Kendall lost his bid to takeover and was humiliated by his father; Siobhan confessed her infidelity and asked for an open marriage from Tom, and he forgave her on both counts, and got to throw Nate out of the castle. So the two major plot threads of the season are pretty thoroughly resolved, and there's no cliffhanger for what will happen next.

Yeah but Connor’s probably lived the major portion of his life in the US. He wouldn’t say “paying tax.” That’s the only Brit colloquialism that was used by the kids. I just think it slipped by with nobody bothering to correct it. Both the writer and director are British.

Awesome series that started a bit slowly and got better every week. The finale was great, and I didn’t need some cliched cliffhanger to return for a season 2. There’s plenty to wonder about as far as what happens to every character.
Strong acting, witty and biting writing, good business stories, great production values....I’m hooked.
Are the characters likable? No. Usually that’s a death knell for a series — but not with SUCCESSION. It’s hard to explain, because while I’m not really rooting for anyone, I’m engrossed anyway.
I MUCH prefer this than to a serious cowboy/western drama like YELLOWSTONE with Kevin Costner. It’s beautiful to look at, but there’s just not enough plot and too many meaningless scenes that scream WTF?

Would recommend this series to anyone intelligent who loves dark comedy and good drama. A soap opera for smart people.
The production design in the castle was stunning. The dialogue is often excellent - witty and sharp.
And the characters almost each have a redeeming feature that contrasts with their dickishness: the Caulkin guy caring if anyone died in the rocket blast and saving his brother from his own drug abuse.
Kendall loving his wife and children, and, deep-down, loving his father too much and wanting his father's love in return. Shiv realizing that her husband (a brilliant character) actually truly loves her for herself and so attempting to protect him even as she goes for the jugular with her father. Greg the Egg. Marcia claiming to put family first. Even the father in the car with Shiv before the wedding displays true affection for her.
Very much enjoying this.

Just finished the first season. Terrific show, and it did get better as it went along. The show really understands family dynamics which I think is its ultimate subject. What a great cast - not just the leads but the supporting players too. I love the woman who plays the ball-busting general counsel.
Not a cliffhanger finale per se but there's a lot in play for the second season - Kendall having to rebuild his life (again) and being back under Logan's thumb ... continued questions about Logan's mental and physical health ... Greg's possession of the supposedly shredded cruise line documents, which now potentially implicates both Logan and Senator Eavis (and Tom) ... Connor's vanity presidential bid ... and what the hell is going on with Roman's sexuality?
There did turn out to be a gay character, btw ... the Asian tech CEO whose company Waystar bought up in the first episode. He has his boyfriend/husband along to dinner with Roman, in the episode about the no confidence vote. Roman seemed like he wanted to suggest a threesome. The actor, Rob Yang, was listed in the opening credits despite a pretty small role, so I assume he'll be back for the second season.
I found it interesting how Logan's health seemed to improve as he fought back against Kendall's no-confidence vote and takeover attempt ... it was like he drew strength from it.

One of the impressive elements of this series has been its effective use of real locations, including city locations and overseas sites that appear to be very real, especially outdoors. Another from the past season that did this was "Killing Eve."
Contrast, say, "Dynasty" or "Knots Landing," which were faves of mine as a youngster but was not far removed from a daytime soap. A few outdoor scenes now and then, but mostly the same sets inside a studio week after week.

Agreed, R127, the show is about family dynamics. It's about a parent who metes out affection and approval and how that can completely fuck up his children and their relationships to him, to each other and to the world in general.
Add the visuals of the fantastic wealth and privilege of the Roy family (the castle episodes were pure eye candy), the sharp dialogue and the excellent acting (agree about the actress who plays the general counsel being very talented) and it's a great ride.
The addition of the Bernie-esque presidential candidate is a stroke of genius.

R127, I'm not so sure Logan is a weak as he displays. I think he's playing with Kendall and the everyone else. He remembered that I Went to Market game hours later. in NM, they said Logan wouldn't go swimming and that he doesn't trust water. Lo and behold, after everyone leaves, he's seen sorta swimming. He seems to know what's going on business -wise as well. I think he's playing a weird cat-and-mouse game with Kendall to determine if he's the right person to take over the business.
Kendall wasn't even smart enough to realize that Marcia, Amir and Logan were trying to help him out of the dead waiter issue. They kept suggesting that the waiter was a thief and perhaps stole his access card. He kept saying no.
I would like to know what Marcia is up to. She seems really shrewd. And it's odd that Logan seems to have genuine affection for her.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | August 14, 2018 8:46 PM |
None of the kids are strong. Kendall talks a good game, but, as seen by his frantic search for drugs just before a power call, he's not up to a leadership role. Their father has emasculated them.
I have seen this over and over with the children of the rich, famous or powerful. They don't feel worthy (deep-down -on the surface they're little shits) because they didn't earn the money, so they destroy themselves. It would be sad if they weren't so entitled.
However, I think that Kendall is going to get his mojo and challenge his father again, because otherwise what kind of intrigue is there going forward?
Maybe Connor is the dark horse and will emerge as a leader, but he (and Roman) are so silly now that's hard to imagine.
Shiv, for all her supposed success as a political operative, still seems like a dilettante, too tied to Daddy emotionally.
Someone in one of the threads asked about money. I'm guessing by the kids' comments that they've already inherited large sums, which is interesting in itself because why would Daddy give them money (independence) knowing full well that it would give them some control over their own lives?
And I agree that Marcia is fascinating and seems to have a genuine affection for Logan.
I'm going to rewatch because I'm sure that there's a lot of great dialogue I missed the first time.

He had scars all over his back, so I assume he is hiding that from everyone but his wives or women he sleeps with. They looked like whipping scars.

The kids have all clearly a lot of money now even with their father alive. Connor has that enormous compound in New Mexico, and the other three have beautiful and incredibly expensive homes in Manhattan: Roman lives in a coop, and Shiv and Kendall live in brownstones.
They may have inherited money from other relatives. We don't know if Connor's mom is still alive, and the mother of the other three seems to come from a wealthy aristocratic English family.

Oh yeah, I noticed those scars, too, r132. Current wife? Second wife? First wife? Self-flagellation?
I couldn't remember from where I knew the actor playing the father, until I saw him in part of one of those Bourne movies over the weekend on cable (sorry, I can't keep those movies separated in my mind...Supremacy? Legacy? Whatever). The old character actor is good at playing a powerful villain, but I look forward to more subtlety in the next season of this show.

I agree 100%.
Quelle surprise, yet another cable series featuring thoroughly unlikeable rich people. Isn't BILLIONS bad and annoying enough?
I couldn't get through the first season of this hot mess. The US is falling apart, mostly thanks to people like this, yet we are supposed to give a shit about this vile corrupt family? This series is not my idea of enjoyable escapism, mostly because these types of people do exist. The reality of it all is not something I want to see in a TV series.
What are the producers of these types of shows thinking? Is there really an audience for this garbage? I realize, there have always been TV shows about rich hateful families, but this series is not fun or camp like older TV shows such as DALLAS of DYNASTY. In this series, you can't root for anyone, if you do, you're a sociopath.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | May 21, 2019 11:06 PM |
r156 I had the exact same reservations about this show (also that it's too straight and white - look at my post at r7) but then I watched it and saw that the writers were actually making these rich fuckers squirm and I delighted in that. Of course I don't root for anyone but I can't help but be entertained by them fucking up and failing left and right.
Haven't watched Billions, even though it's constantly being recommended to me. I think one rich family show is enough for me.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | May 21, 2019 11:24 PM |
Exactly, R157. This show isn’t asking us to CARE about any of these people, we are actually told we can laugh at them. And yet, by the season finale, we did feel something for the main shithead Kendall when things went very wrong for him.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | May 21, 2019 11:29 PM |
R158, the thing is I don't care either way. I sure don't care to champion these types and I don't care to watch bad things happen to them either.

Their lives of self-created drama are not at all interesting to me.
I already know lots of people who constantly screw up their lives on purpose, they need 'drama' and constant attention. I sure don't need to see those types on TV.

Just finished S1 last night. Few thoughts.
Really well made show. Makes me want to be in NYC.
I don’t trust Marcy (the 3rd wife’s) son. Maybe it’s my Game of a Thrones hangover coming out but he knows too much for a non-family member, family member that wasn’t a longtime employee. He and his mother were present during a transparent discussion about covering up the (slightly) hot waiter’s death. Plus her son is silently promoted during the Thanksgiving episode.
Back to the son, he’s getting setup for an inheritance that will cause drama. The children were arguing in e1 about giving Marcy 2x voting share. Why would a housewife (I’m sure there is a LOT more to her) need double the power? Because she will pass some of her stocks to her son, depending on the rules of the will.
I like that I don’t like anyone. I am also biase in that I wanted a gay character. It’s teally odd that the show has very limited sex in any direction, but at the same time I respect it for keeping the story about family and power without using the tired trope about sex.
Finally, besides the Egg head cousin, the trainer that we see for 2 little scenes, and Marcy’s son, no one is fuckable. Please send some eye candy for S2
The Corporate Counsil actress and character is my favorite. I couldn’t place her until I remember that she played the crazy mom in Carrie 2: The Rage.

Also, Tom leaving his friend behind for his lame bachelors party really pissed me off. They should have skipped his wedding.
He really is the worst and seems gay as a goose, but I am continually entertained by his antics and new money outlook.
The daughter’s politico ex-boyfriend is bitch-made. I would have told him to fuck off with putting that wine back in bottle. The daughter really likes dating weak men.
I loved how she springs the I want an open marriage thing on him on the wedding night. These people so whatever the fuck they want and never face consequences, it’s fabulous TV.

It’s shooting at a restaurant near me in the West 50s this morning. I’ve spotted Jeremy Strong walking inside, wearing one of those upside down face shields.

Thanks for the report R236. I can't wait for this show to come back.

It’s shooting at Cipriani on South Street tonight. They shot there for an episode in Season 1, too.

It shot at The Shed at Hudson Yards all last week.

This show is set to blow the fuck up if it can hold the momentum from season two. If the writing holds up, by the of season three, HBO will have another Sopranos on its hands.

I'm just happy this show survived. it's very expensive to make since they shoot on location. Being in NYC, which was a COVID hotspot, and having an ancient lead had me worried. At this point, no one else can play Logan. Happy to see that HBO and the show gave the show time.
I have Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Before HBO Max was free with Hulu I was using HBO Go. One channel I'm happy to support. Plus HBO Max has made a lot of gay content over the past 1-2 years. Simply the best cable channel in my opinion.

Shit's about to get real!

Does anyone know if the pandemic will figure into this season or is it set in before times?
by Anonymous | reply 246 | April 27, 2021 10:07 PM |
I've been wondering that as well for shows like Euphoria. I sort of hope they don't factor that into these shows. Let us live in the fantasy without that stuff. But maybe they need to mention it for storylines to explain why some characters may not be in the same room.

They’ll probably wear masks on occasion or Roman will be caused of infecting everyone but it will likely be a gag and not a plot line.

I want to swallow every inch of Jeremy Strong.

I think Succession is set in an alternate reality (not in a Sci-Fi way) and so Covid won’t be a fixture at all.

Jesse Armstrong has said that the pandemic will appear on the show but that it won’t be a foregrounded plot element.

Maybe not. But the show does not need Logan to survive. The show is not strictly about Logan as much as it is about the empire he created.
And yes, I’m aware of the name of the show. This particular show could go in a million different directions and still be a succession drama.

Hel-LO, Alexander Skarsgard.
I bet his character fucks Shiv.

This show is just teeming with big dick men.

It’s been confirmed the show is shooting its last episode (s) of the season in Italy. I bet they’ll be in Lake Como. I bet George Clooney will pop by for a visit if Skarsgard is on set.

Yes, the show is set in an alternate universe where FOX News does not exist. Their company ATC News is the FOX News of their universe. CNN also does not exist in their reality. So COVID might not exist either.
by Anonymous | reply 257 | June 16, 2021 10:11 PM |
And in the Succession universe Donald Trump hasn’t been the president, either.
by Anonymous | reply 258 | June 18, 2021 3:13 PM |
Bernie Sanders also doesn’t exist in their universe. Shiv goes to work for his clone.

Trailer for Season 3-it looks pretty damn good. And confirmation that Covid isn’t a part of the storyline.
