She also said she and Patrick Dempsey had a rough relationship.

Yeah, good for her -- based on the interview, she has a lot more common sense than many actors.

Of all the characters on that show, hers is the least interesting to me.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 17, 2018 3:36 PM |
I wonder why her relationship with fellow actors is so poor though. 12 years and never nominated for an Emmy by her peers?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 17, 2018 3:36 PM |
Isn't this a major conflict of interest seeing as Mike Pompeo is the director of the CIA?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 17, 2018 3:54 PM |
My favorite characters were the Fâg, the Goôk, and the Níggér.
Just kidding I hated the fucking show since it first came out in 2004. The only cool episode was when Christina Ricca had her hand in a dead body and there a grenade/bomb tuoe device. It was funny.

This show is like Billy Graham of TV - everytime I hear about it I'm shocked it's still around. Does anyone actually watch it?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 17, 2018 4:02 PM |
I haven't watched it since the second season -- but it's now in its 14th season and it's still ABC's second highest rated show, so yeah, a lot of people watch it. According to the article, it's also airs in 220 territories around the world and has earned nearly $3 billion for ABC.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 17, 2018 4:08 PM |
Good for her. Seriously. And it's true, she has kept the show afloat.
She and Patrick were very close early on, so it's interesting that things fell apart. Seems like it was a money/power issue.
I also wonder if she nixed this new relationship, as that new doctor seemed to disappear quite abruptly.

I’ve never seen an episode of Gray’s Anatomy but remember seeing Pompeo in a guest roll as a high school student on Strangers With Candy from a couple of years before GA began. Crazy to go from that to $10 million a year. Other young actors from Strangers I enjoyed more have gone on to low key and low budget careers or left the business. Acting really is a crapshoot.

I was supposed to interview her by phone about her character’s mental health for a nonprofit about 10 years ago. Her handler told me they couldn’t find her. I was like, oh, OK, well, I know she is busy...we can reschedule. And her rep said something like, “No, we can’t *find* her. Physically. She is missing, and it’s not the first time it has happened. We’ll need to track her down, but I don’t know if she will be in any condition to talk.” Something like that. They never responded to my follow-up inquiries. That was a first and only.

by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 18, 2018 3:44 PM |
I haven't watched for quite a few years - since the plane crash - but this was a really interesting interview.
What I took away from it was that, at least with this first show of hers, Shonda Rhimes does not have the kind of power we all thought she had. I know Grey's was a fucking mess behind the scenes and that was why Rhimes instituted a "no asshole" policy at her shows.
Probably why Dempsey was fired, since he didn't want to be there and was fucking an intern when he was. It apparently burned out Chyler Leigh and Sara Ramirez too, both of them seem to have less than glowing things to say about their time there.
I respect Pompeo's honesty. This is probably it for her, so smart of her to get the money and to try and transition to something else behind the scenes.
She's kinda funny in an outspoken Boston kind of way. I could see her in a sitcom being a real straight talking rough edged woman - basically 100 percent opposite of Meredith Grey.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 18, 2018 3:51 PM |
Why would anybody "respect the fact" that a crummy show has been on a long time? And despite her sweet dead, Pompeo sounds like the cuntiest cunt imaginable. Threatening to "suffocate" somebody? That bitch is crazy.

I like Pompeo. She comes off very honest in this interview. I also like the fact that she calls herself and her cast members out on their cunty behaviour. I found it very insightful into the dynamics of a large ensemble on hit TV show - the egos, the disdain of doing a television show as a working actor, the ambition to do something greater. I like that she realizes how good she has it on Grey's.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 18, 2018 3:55 PM |

Doesn't happen much. The odds of a show's making it to season 16 are infinitessimal. Also, compared to a lot of the really, truly shitty programming on network TV, Grey's isn't bad.

Every soap opera needs a matriarch to keep it going.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 18, 2018 4:35 PM |
I wanna know more about her disappearing and being dragged back non-functional.
Chyler left because she was a recovered meth-head who they had paired up with active cokemonster Eric Dane and it was fucking her up. She also made a movie early in her career where her love interest was her real life brother.
Ramirez supposedly had an affair with another female cast member that ended contentiously and there were concerns she was going to out the other actress. She and Capshaw were split up because she was a cunt to Capshaw.
I think as a general rule, actors shouldn't stay in any role for longer than 5 years. It is creatively deadening and all that instinct for drama winds up being diverted into their lives without somewhere to put it in their work.

Another show that's gone on way too long is The Simpsons. It used to be wonderful but has been lame for a long time now. Family Guy is another crap show that been on years too long. by Anonymous | reply 80 | January 19, 2018 4:50 AM |
I don’t watch the show anymore. I was surprised several years ago to learn it’s still on. I loved it when it was new, but within a few years few of the original cast remained and I didn’t care about the new ones, and lost faith in the increasingly mega-disaster-of-the-week episodes. I do think the show has an interesting offscreen legacy, from Rhimes’s casting of any competent actor to fill any role regardless of sex, race, age, etc., to the firing of whatshisname for calling whatshisname a faggot, which really drew a new line in Hollywood. I don’t like Scandal and I’m really not a big fan of Shonda Rhimes’s series but I like the way she has directed her career and her actors.
I’m glad Pompeo asked for so much and got it. If Grey’s Anatomy is going to air after sooooo many years and she is an anchor and one of the laat originals, then that is leverage and she used it. Her notion that actors should get a share of the gross backend is certainly paradigm shifting, based on Jay-Z’s alleged generosity (compared with the overall recording industry). If she keeps up that fight as her career progresses, she will ruffle a lot of feathers. If only writers—without whom there would be no television and no movies—were treated more this way.
I dunno. I have no real opinion of her but I like her balls and her ideas, as well as her bold candidness in this interview. She is crass and doesn’t hold punches. It’s jarring to read. Would it be jarring if she were a man?

She doesn't come across as cunty to me. I don't think saying that directors thought she was going to be a star after Moonlight Mile was such a stretch. Moonlight Mile got a lot of good reviews for both her and Jake Gyllenhaal. There was a lot of buzz for both of them. Obviously he went onto a better movie career and she was realistic that her movie career was not going to take off.
She gave a lot of insight into what it is to be a working actor and the thought processes and perceptions of certain mediums (TV, medical shows). Basically she was admitting she thought doing a medical show was beneath her. I find it refreshing that she admits her own arrogance.

The show has a horrible track record with creating new (and more importantly, interesting) characters. The new relationship with the Italian doctor and his generic ex gf intern is a prime example of why Pompeo's presence is necessary.

Because GA is a fucking soap opera/fantasy show, that's why. Actually, it's more fantasy than soap opera. And what's with all the lesbians? This show features a hospital that abounds with ready and willing lesbians. They pop up everywhere. I remember a show where a female doctor gets called in because of her specialty (repairing facial deformities? I can't remember) and she immediately has the hots for Arizona. She and Arizona end up having sex in the hospital, in one of those little rooms where the doctors go to take a quick nap or something like that. Yes, lesbian quickies are SO prevalent in major hospitals.

Agree with r97 on all counts.
Isaiah Washington ruined it for himself. If he hadn't made that comment at the Golden Globes in front of everybody, he probably would have remained on the show. I always wonder if he was intentionally trying to get into trouble.

More Grey's Anatomy behind the scenes rumors.
Who hooked up with whom?

Who had a beef with Shonda?

HTGAWM is truly the worst show I've ever watched a half-season of. I couldn't go back after 1.0. I landed on ABC while it was on last night, and damn if Jack Falahee isn't looking finer than ever.

"Most wealthy people did coke in L.A., unfortunately, and liking musicians does not make you a "groupie slut," it makes you a cool person."
Groupies are generally considered pathetic, not "cool." And little Linda, when confronted with law enforcement officials, gave them a fake name in an effort to avoid arrest. It didn't work; she was charged "with drug possession and conspiracy to sell drugs." She copped a plea and got probation.
Maybe you ding dongs think that because she's an animal rights activist that makes her "nice." Not really. What else did she have to do after her career tanked and evaporated? She had to find something to occupy herself and now she makes a big deal about animals But that doesn't make her "nice,"

The most fascinating thing to me about Ellen Pompeo is that she has done NOTHING but GA since that show started. I mean, not a small role in an indie movie, not a guest shot on a sitcom, not even a Lifetime movie.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | January 19, 2018 11:15 PM |
R127 She says that is in her contract with ABC, and it is a big part of the reason she demanded a lot of money and part ownership. She thinks she sacrificed a movie career because of the schedule and a clause that prohibits any other work.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | January 19, 2018 11:34 PM |
She earns every penny!
by Anonymous | reply 129 | January 19, 2018 11:35 PM |
I know that people would do anything for fame and money, and no one wants to see or hear crying from the yacht, as it were.
But it IS a lot of work. GA shoots 6 days a week and some shoot days can run from 6 am to 1 am or 2 am the following day. Sunday is the only guaranteed day off. When she does have summer hiatus, I'm sure she doesn't want to move for a few weeks. And she's got kids.
It may also be in her contract, too, that she is ONLY the face of GA. But it's not like they can just hit a mark, say a line and then go off to a second job.

by Anonymous | reply 131 | January 20, 2018 12:08 AM |
Like I said, nobody wants to see tears on the yacht, R131. But someone else was wondering why she hasn't done anything else, and that schedule is probably part of the reason why.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | January 20, 2018 12:12 AM |
R64 and R66- If the main actors stick together during negotiations they have more leverage.
The network will always act like, “Well, we don’t need you...because we have X.” And, apparently, ABC did just that, telling Pompeo, “We don’t need you, we have Patrick.” (Before he was killed off!)
A famous example is the cast of Friends. After season one, NBC offered breakout star Jennifer Aniston more money than the rest of the actors. She smartly said no-probably partially because she truly understood that it was the group chemistry that made the show and partially because she knew any unequal arrangement would breed resentment.
All six stuck together and became the highest paid cast on TV.
Bottom line: strength in solidarity.

I always figured that's why they brought on Lexie, so she would be the next Grey in Grey's Anatomy if Pompeo left.
When it looked like Pompeo would stay, that probably played into Lexie being written off (that and the other backstage shit with her).

You must be homicidal then to know that Marky Mark made almost $70 million last year, for being a mediocre hack. Many in Hollywood are grossly overpaid, inc Wahlberg and Pompeo. It gives some us of pleasure at least to finally see the mediocre women in the business getting what the very mediocre men have been getting for years.
GA makes gazillions for the network, Rimes and the production company funding it. Everyone in those outfits makes millions, from that pov it's only fair that the star and face of the show get her share.

TV is such a fragmented market that 2.2m per episode, nowadays, sounds great.
Australia has a much smaller population, but it seems our viewer numbers for each show, seems inordinately high in comparison.

Grey’s should go batshit crazy and maybe invoke a UFO storyline and reveal Meredith is so strangely emotionless because she is in fact a Grey alien. That would at least be interesting.

I thought she was interesting for a lead character in the sense she seemed so depressive. I remember in one of their first disaster-themed episodes, she fell into the water and then she looked like she made a choice to go under and drown. I thought, wow, that’s interesting writing. But then the show backed out and got lame and I stopped watching.

by Anonymous | reply 171 | January 22, 2018 6:58 AM |
I'm shocked at those posters, probably fraus, in thinking she comes across well in that interview. She constantly looks down on others, then tries to hand wave it away with 'oh there's nothing wrong with a Prius,' then why use that as an example to boost your position Ellen?
Despite what she says she does come across bitter about being stuck on a medical show because she knows that this is the best she can do and is trying to make the best of it. She really thought she was going to be a movie actress and this show is somehow beneath her like all the money she makes isn't enough, because she's on 'some medical show.'
She also comes across as jealous of younger actresses with movie careers and an egomaniac. Constantly having a pissing contest with Dempsey to see who could score more money. You get enough already bitch.

I find it hard to believe that her contract would forbid her from working anywhere else. There have been tons of stars on big hit shows who do other things. It's just weird that in all of the 14 years or whatever she hasn't done ANYTHING else.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | January 22, 2018 2:58 PM |
She has the ideal career for an actor: she's made enough from GA that she won't ever need to work again, yet she's far from a household name and can likely go about in public without getting harassed by or even noticed by fans. She'll be able to produce, and if she's lucky, maybe wind up with Margo Martindale and Ann Dowd's careers, playing slightly feisty older women on well-reviewed indie-film-style series.
As for Grey's Anatomy, it's a huge hit with middle school girls across America. They've found it on Netflix or Hulu and watched all 14 seasons so they're caught up. I know this anecdotally as an uncle and because it's actually been written about as a phenomenon. (Friends and Gilmore Girls are the other shows that 2018 middle school girls are rediscovering)

Yes, R175, she's recognizable, but would you care if you saw her? She's no great beauty or fashionista, I don't know if she has any social media presence and nobody talks about her. She's boring...
by Anonymous | reply 177 | January 22, 2018 3:58 PM |
R176 and R177 -- To clarify: I am sure that plenty of people know who she is, it's just that she has a level of anonymity that lesser-paid actors don't enjoy.
And because she's not being stalked by paparazzi or all over IG, I suspect she could get by with a minimum of disguise-- sunglasses and a hat. It's not like M or Jennifer Lawrence or Jennifer Aniston or Brad Pitt where people are freaking out and making any public outing a nightmare.
