Cranberries lead singer Dolores O'Riordan is dead to me

What?
No!
Rest in peace

What a terrible shame.
I weirdly, having not listened to them in years, had a Cranberries marathon on YouTube a couple of weeks ago. She had a beautiful voice.

Wasnât she troubled? Or am I thinking of someone else? She was an amazing singer....very sad and too young. RIP.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 15, 2018 4:25 PM |
R5 No idea. She did have mental health issues, perhaps something there.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 15, 2018 4:26 PM |
If it was sudden and unexpected, then we can rule out a terminal illness. Possibly drink/drugs related or maybe an accident. Either way, she was still relatively young and this will be devastating for her friends and family.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 15, 2018 4:27 PM |
I remember reading somewhere that at one time she only lived on coffee and cigarettes, that can't be good for you.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 15, 2018 4:28 PM |
WHATTT???? Are you fucking kidding me?? I have their CD in my car right now! (Yes, it still has a cd player). I bought their original stuff in the mid 90s. They are one of the best bands of all time - at least from my era. This is so fucked up... she was WAY too young. Can someone please check on Tori Amos and Natalie Merchant??
R8 maybe you're thinking of Sinead O'Connor? How the hell did Sinead outlive Dolores O'Riordan?
Was she still living in Canada? I know she moved out of Ireland with her husband... for a while, but I can't find anything now that her death was announced - just that is coming up.

She had 2 solo albums: Are You Listening? (2007) and No Baggage (2009)
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 15, 2018 4:44 PM |
Wow. Really unexpected. I read that she was kind of a cunt to service people (waiters, staff, roadies, etc.).

I listen to her almost everyday still. Omg.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 15, 2018 4:44 PM |
Well, that article at r14 said she was anorexic on and off for 20 years (but not so anorexic that she couldn't have kids) so that possibly played a role if she had a heart attack or something, though it's more likely she would've ended up in the hospital or had treatment attempted... the vague way they covered it and lack of any treatment / resuscitation sounds like suicide. She just finished performing in December and was still recording now. wtf... I can't even deal with this. I never understood what people were going through when David Bowie died but now I do.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 15, 2018 4:45 PM |

People rolled their eyes when they amped up the guitars for "Zombie" but it was a hit. And good for them for changing up their sound even though they happened to do it right when loud guitar songs were getting all of the attention. Even Sheryl Crow ditched the plinky acoustic guitar and piano for loud guitars as grunge took over the world.

Not the Irish woman singer I expected to hear bad news about. Nor the Irish celebrity who dies before he's 50. Had heard she had her troubles but wasn't a fan so didn't really follow the news. I just turned 45 so 46 is no age to die at all.

In May 2017, Dolores declared that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | January 15, 2018 5:19 PM |
In 2015, OâRiordan was fined âŹ6,000 following an air rage incident on an Aer Lingus plane from New York to Shannon Airport.
On November 10th, 2014, she became abusive on the flight after stepping on the foot of an Aer Lingus flight attendant, Carmel Coyne.
When she was arrested at Shannon Airport, she shouted at gardaĂ: âIâm an icon. Iâm the queen of Limerick. You donât know who you are dealing with. I pay my taxes so I pay your wages and I am going to sue.â
She headbutted Garda Shane Dawson and spat in his face.
Garda Dawson told the court that the incident was âone of the worst I have ever had to deal withâ.
It emerged during the trial that OâRiordan was suffering from a âsevere mental illnessâ at the time of the incident. She had no memory of what had happened.
The court was told that OâRiordan had been paranoid and delusional and later spent three weeks in St Patrickâs psychiatric hospital.

Before the diagnosis, she was going through some shit two years ago... divorced / separated - living in nyc out of a suitcase while her kids lived w/ husband in canada.
[quote]In his plea of mitigation, Mr OâDonnell said âthese were the actions of a very, very ill personâ who âwas somewhat out of control
[quote]He said OâRiordan was going through a very, very difficult time having recently separated from her husband of 20 years. âShe moved to New York city and hadnât seen her children for two months, who live in Canada, and was living out of a suitcase in New York.â
[quote]Ms O'Riordan's solicitor said she was not in her right mind at the time and asked the court not to impose a conviction.

My first time hearing Dolores O'Riordan's voice was unforgettable. It threw into question what a voice could sound like in that context of Rock. I'd never heard somebody use their instrument in that way. Shocked and saddened to hear of her passing, thoughts are with her family.

On the contrary, R59. You're tedious not to mention crass too. This thread is about the death of Dolores O'Riordan. If you want to continue your Queenie vendetta against me then do it on one of the more trivial threads, you classless prick.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | January 15, 2018 5:30 PM |
I get that she was bipolar and lived a tortured life, but she had countless millions of dollars and fans who loved her & who she meant a lot to around the world. So, what does this say for the bipolar, sexually abused, check-out clerk at a drugstore who has no friends, who nobody cares about, and goes home to a 600/month apartment that is barely paid for.
This is what always gets me perplexed about celebrity suicides....when people much worse off manage to white-knuckle it through life for some reason. I'm not judging it - i think people should kill themselves if they want & it should even be physician assisted... but I am just always perplexed at the contrast.
I am not sure how / why people want to listen to her music right after this happened. I don't think I can listen to it for a long time.

by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 15, 2018 5:45 PM |
R23, I love 'Daffodil Lament' too. Probably my favourite Cranberries song. It has a really unusual structure for a pop song: a slow, mournful build that opens wide towards the end into something beautiful, uplifting and surprising.
It's a moving aural depiction of someone managing to lift themselves out of depression and see the world anew.

[quote]This is what always gets me perplexed about celebrity suicides....when people much worse off manage to white-knuckle it through life for some reason.
People don't realize this, but each and every one of us is the center of his or her own world. Through our perception we decide what we pay attention to and how we see things (half glass full vs. half glass empty). Obviously depressed people have a totally different view of the world than people who are not depressed and yet both share the same world, the same enviroment, receive the same data through their senses, etc. and yet come to a different conclusion.
Celebrities have their fair share of problems, some are related to their celebrity status and some can be related to issues regular people have like childhood trauma, fear of the unknown (future, career, relationship, trust issues, etc.). The struggle is real for each and everyone of us. I mean, there is always someone else who can say "You think YOU've got problems? Walk a mile in my shoes and you will know what real problems are!" but your own struggle is still your heaviest burden you have a really difficult time dealing with, if you even dare to deal with it and not distract yourself by getting into other people's business or try to self medicate and take drugs, drink alcohol, or get some mental disorder.

R109 / R11 you didn't need to make 2 posts on the exact same point. Is there a reason you are beating a dead horse in a thread about Dolores O'Riordan's death?
This board has plenty of pointless bitchery but the "great pride" does not from such a moronic example of it. If you want to be a cunt, raise your fucking game. And if someone is discussing suicide - replying with a comment about them being a high school dropout is not witty, funny, or bitchy in any kind of amusing way.
Is that so hard for your to understand or is the AIDS dementia setting in?

In a thread of mourning and rememberance for a mentally ill, female Irish singer a possible high school dropout admits in a post that he is ignorant of a fact of life. Someone then concurs that yes, PHSDO is pretty ignorant on that fact of life with a bit of pointless bitchery flair thrown in. PHSDO then gets all pissy, envokes the honor of the now forgotten dead chanteuse, and calls all participants cunts. Several cunts follow until the memorial and remeberances begin anew.
Sounds like a gay Irish wake to me. Never change, Datalounge.

Sudden death in a youthful, healthy person with no other obvious explanation is almost certainly one of two causes: catastrophic sudden cardiac event or ruptured brain aneurism or other undiagnosed congenital vascular brain or cardiac malformation.

French and Sanders did a funny bit where it was a sing-off between perky Delores and radical Sinead.
Sad today, remembering.

SHOCK DEATH Cranberries lead tributes to âextraordinaryâ Dolores OâRiordan after singer dies suddenly in London hotel aged 46
by Anonymous | reply 137 | January 15, 2018 11:35 PM |
R135 âsudden deathâ in this case could mean her heart gave out because of long term eating disorder which she had . More often it is used in the incidence of suicide or drug overdose.
If her family release a statement about âheart failureâ you know it wasnât suicide or drugs. If they donât say anything it was suicide or drugs.

r135 You gotta read between the lines, she resumed touring after a "back injury"...

Were Dolores and Sinead well acquainted with each other? Ireland is tiny after all. We hear all about Sinead's issues thanks to her histrionics, but I didn't realize Dolores was equally messed up. I do recall the airline story a couple years ago but it didn't get that much traction. So I wonder if Sinead is going to have another breakdown after this. Even if they were not close friends, their life stories were very, very similar.

Earlier today there was an article about her death on CNN. Apparently, she'd stated in an earlier interview she'd suffered from depression, drug addiction, alcoholism, and eating disorders due to abuse she'd suffered when she was a 'young child.'
Probably an accidental combination of meds mixed with alcohol, physical exhaustion, and neglected health.
So sad.

Sinead was at Shane MacGowanâs lifetime achievement award-60th birthday party last night.

She looked good, R149! And happy. Though why does Johnny Depp insist on showing up at things like this? Heâs turned into a groupie.
Dolores tie-in: âThe Broad Majestic Shannonâ was dedicated to her.

Because Johnny Depp is friends with Shane MacGowan. They've known each other for years, R150. That's why he was there.

R125 She's a housewife from Limerick. Come on Eileen was written by an English band in 1982. Highly unlikely.

Dolores means "sorrows", taken from the Spanish title of the Virgin Mary MarĂa de los Dolores, meaning "Mary of Sorrows".

What sort of abuse? Emotional, physical or sexual abuse?

Sexual. From the age of 8 to 12.

Of course Johnny Depp and Shane MacGowan are friends.

He was in a band before he was an actor, R160. He played slide guitar on Oasis' Fade in-out, has played guitar on a few of Manson's tracks and is currently in Hollywood Vampires. You don't like him? Fine, but that doesn't make him a "sad hanger on" simply for attending his friend's birthday party.

by Anonymous | reply 165 | January 19, 2018 7:14 AM |
I don't think so R165, but given that she was worried about running into him at her father's funeral, I'd guess it was a relative.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | January 19, 2018 9:21 AM |
BTW, early reports say she was found in the bathroom with fentanyl in her system, which suggests accidental OD rather than suicide.

Jesus, she looks awful in that pic at r169, sucked up and dark circles, I can see her being an opiate addict.

it makes me really sad that what caused her anorexia and depression was the abuse she suffered as a child, she was taking her medication and it could have been accidental, still, if it wasn't for the abuse her life could have taken a different direction, she could be here now =( I wonder if the son of a b%#*& is still alive, I hope he burns in hell. She was a great artist, and what a one of a kind voice she had, I hope she has found her peace now. RIP Dolores, you will be missed.

R165 - She said it was someone who had respect at Limerick, her hometown. at another time, she said she was afraid to have to meet with him again at her fathers funeral, it's really sad, I guess if it wasn't a relative it could have been a priest. She started singing at the age of 05. Her abuse happened when she was only 08 and it when on until she turned 12. I guess it she sang at a church, that´s where it could have happned, since she said it was someone that had respect and was trusted in her hometown. She later told a reporter that he went to her father´s funeral and said sorry. It´s too fucked up, I mean, if it wasn't for this demon, she wouldn't have to deal with depression and anorexia, and maybe wouldn't develop the mental issues she did, maybe she would be ok now. God bless her soul, I hope she is in peace, we lost a true artist, she was great. =(

Voice mail on the day she died. She sounds happy, looking forward to recording the next day.
by Anonymous | reply 173 | April 8, 2018 5:03 PM |
R173, I don't think she sounds 'happy' there. Upbeat, yes, but it's a manic sort of upbeat. You can hear the stress underneath the forced cheerfulness.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | April 8, 2018 11:22 PM |
R174 - I think that's her personality though... not sure entirely, but if you go to YouTube and search for her appearances on The Voice - Ireland, you'll see a similar kind of thing.
Here's an interview from 5 years ago... she can sound kind of hyper here too. She just talks fast & with emphasis. Maybe I am missing what you are hearing though.
