A lot of the male pairs figure skaters and ice dancers are straight. Like Chris Knierim (married to his pairs partner), Nathan Bartholomay, Evan Bates (dating his dance partner), and Zach Donahue (dating another ice skater). Nathan Chen and Ross Minor in males singles are straight.

Straight guys probably inherently relate more to the masculine role required in pairs/dance than a feminine gay boy. Of course, there are exceptions to this stereotype, but it seems to be one that holds pretty true.

The whole makeup thing, not unlike for theatre, is tricky to balance - you exagerate a bit to make features more visible from the audience’s pov and then cameras do a closeup (or photos after the performance) and it looks overdone. Combine that with bedazzled translucent shirts and it’s an overall very distinct look.
