Watched her in GRACE OF MONACO (apparently filmed in 2012 or 2013) and the Botox was already seriously impairing her facial expressions then. In many shots she appeared frozen and waxen - not at all like Grace Kelly, who it seems never had work done.

That extreme close-up interview I saw was disturbing because the whole lower part of her face wasn’t just not moving like Botox does; it looked like it had been filled with cement or something. It really freaked me out. The only person I have ever seen with that effect was a trans woman on “Botched” who had her face filled with actual cement or silicone caulking or something in Mexico.

I feel bad for her. She is talented and attractive but must not possibly be anywhere close to content with herself to keep mutilating herself. She's always had bloodshot eyes. Her eyes look smaller/deep set because Botox used above the eyebrow pushes your lids down in a way and they stay there. I have had it done and looked the same way. It's an odd feeling to say the least.

The old facelift was extreme surgery, separating the skin from muscle tissue across the whole face and reattaching it, but it looked so much more human.

Now women can say “a surgeon’s knife has never touched this face” because it’s all injectable fillers and paralysis and laser, sound and thermal treatments to puff up the face. It looks OK at first if it’s subtle, but after a while it looks like the whole head is full of infection and abscessing. Plus they always end up with cut marks around the eyes to get rid of loose eyelid skin. It really has gone too far.

How in the world did it become more socially acceptable to look mutilated than to look old?

Nicole is 50. She played the mother of young children on Big Little Lies. Her character read to me as late 30's maybe 40. Skarsgård is 41. There don't seem to be any 28 year old mother characters in Hollywood. Her wig was awful in Lies. I think these actresses want to keep working and incrementally they freeze their look without really thinking about it or knowing what else to do. Courteney Cox now 53 woke up but you know, I haven't noticed that she really let herself age after her big declaration she hated botox.

Kidman has kept quite a toned body. I don't think her head/face look wonderful but not monstrous yet either. When the lights and miracle makeup is gone, we don't really know what the face might be.

I think these Hollywood people, men and women, look in the mirror at their skin and look at close-ups on camera for signs of aging. They focus on wrinkles and lines, and if they see none, they think they look good. Sandra Bullock looks exactly like a 35 year-old Sandra Bullock in still photos. That is all she sees of herself. And so she thinks the old girl is holding up pretty well. The people who have severe cosmetic enhancements don’t see signs of aging and they don’t see freaky unmoving faces because they don’t talk to themselves face to face.

Has anyone noticed on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills that most of the women (especially Kyle) hold their cameras at a 75-degree angle high above their heads? Because they’ve been taught that is slimming and because they see themselves on Facetime and think that that is what they look like—unflattering camera angles or true-to-life perspectives are not allowed into their psyches.

These people who spend their lives on camera do not have a realistic understanding of what they look like—only the most photogenic compositions make it into their worlds.

Michael Jackson clearly wanted to look like a classically beautiful white or at least nonblack woman. He had portraits taken and I imagine that at least for many years he interpreted his surgeries as successful, getting him close to his goal of looking like a Hollywood movie starlet. He couldn’t objectively see himself as mutilated the way the rest of the world did because he controlled his image. Here, he could be Bjork’s attractive transgender sister. And I’m certain that he was pretty satisfied with this photo and therefore with his appearance during this period.

Her weird face hasn’t overshadowed most of her strong roles, and I think that’s practically miraculous. My sister has always actively avoided Nicole Kidman movies for some reason (Tom Cruise affiliation, I think), but she saw Lion on our flight to Amsterdam last year and was sobbing, and she blamed Nicole Kidman for doing it to her. I don’t know Kidman and I find everything remotely related to Tom Cruise off putting, but I find myself rooting for Kidman because I usually love her acting. The Hours, The Others, Eyes Wide Shut—great performances in great movies. Even in moviesI don’t like—The Beguiled, Bewitched, To Die For, Moulin Rouge—she’s often the reason I’ve watched until the end. I hope she doesn’t kill her career by becoming such a trainwreck that I can’t look at her. She could be a Judi Dench or a Helen Mirren who goes beyond “great actress” status to revered and respected by showing that her talents are beyond her sex appeal.

Gravity is, I guess, Sandra Bullock’s greatest feat of acting. I thought it was a big-budget B movie and greatly overrated. I was excited to watch it, and what I saw was a lady astronaut floating around in her underwear, falling from space and then crawling onto the shore of a tropical island in her underwear. Nicole Kidman’s Bewitched disaster was a masterpiece of restraint and intellectual prowess by comparison.

I agree with R62. Aside from the botox and surgery and whatever else, what worries me about Kidman is that she seems to want to disappear. The extremely pale skin, extremely pale hair, extreme thinness and her tendency (less this year, admittedly) to wear extremely pale gowns all scream "I'm not actually here". Either she's got psychological problems or her stylist really hates her. Or both, of course.

I'm a big fan of Kidman's acting and think that her ability to bring to life, complex, frequently very brittle characters can be at least in part attributed to whatever personal issues that seem to manifest in her public appearance. Most actors aren't good at compartmentalizing and I think Kidman's wonderful essaying of difficult women is partly due to her own personal darkness.
