[quote]Hot on the heels of his tour de force with “The Big Sick,” Kumail Nanjiani has attached himself as an actor and writer for an upcoming TV adaptation of “My Beautiful Laundrette” being developed at Turner-owned Super Deluxe. Alec Berg (“Silicon Valley”) and Hanif Kureishi (writer of the original “Laundrette”) will executive produce with Stephen Gaghan ( “Traffic”). The serialization of “Laundrette” will be based on the Oscar-nominated 1985 indie film starring Daniel Day-Lewis. The film revolved around a young British man of Pakistani heritage and his white boyfriend, a former gang leader, who take on running a London laundromat owned by the British-Pakistani man’s uncle. The film was lauded for its portrayal of the gay and immigrant communities. No network or streaming service has yet sealed a deal for the project.

Please don't. Leave the memories of the wonderful original movie as is. Plus, The Big Sick wasn't that great.

Please. Not with that face.

It's an unnecessary remake, and he's too old. On the other hand, I would like to see his cock--not that he would show it. But he has a nice bod.

Not with that mug if he's gunning to play the Omar character.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 12, 2018 2:14 PM |
I assume Kumail is intending to play the British Pakistani lead's uncle? That character was kind of fun in his own way. Avan Jogia as Omar would be awesome.

Beautiful movie but we don't need this.

First gay themed film I ever saw, on CityTV just before Christmas in 1990. Still a favorite today.

Anyone remember when they turned Baghdad Cafe into a tv show with Whoopi?
Another beautiful little film that should have remained a one off.
I miss those indy films that where simple and perfect and lovely. A true art form lost to the cult of "let's be quirky" indies that took over.

R9 I wrote this here before but flipping through the TV late one night I landed on CityTV and the opening song to Bagdad Cafe caught my attention and I was hooked.
And I agree, no one is making really interesting small movies anymore and those that do try to hard to be precious or twee.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 12, 2018 2:37 PM |
I like him. But I hope he's not playing the young gay guy..too old and too not cute.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 12, 2018 2:40 PM |
Weird face but nice bod.

Now I want this to happen.

Taron Egerton as his lover! Lots of nudity, please.

Yes, her and Jean Stapleton were very good in it.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 12, 2018 4:20 PM |
No they weren't R15.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 12, 2018 5:13 PM |
r8 I miss CityTV. Whatever is "CityTV" on television now is far removed from the Moses years.
And I miss when they would show movies like My Beautiful Laundrette, the Coca Cola Kid, Bolero, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, etc. after 10 p.m. Friday nights.

I grew up in Germany and I had access to a Swiss TV Channel which would air gay themed movies and shows on Thursday nights (that's where I saw the original Queer as Folk starring Aiden Gillen, Craig Kelly, and Charlie Hunnam). I can't remember how many times I jerked off to the VHS tape recording of the scene in My Beautiful Laundrette where the uncle dances with his mistress in the shop while Omar and Johnny make out in the back room.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 12, 2018 5:59 PM |
I miss it too R17.
I got to see so many movies I had never heard of and honestly what I know and love about movies today was formed by CityTV. Aside from the occasional CBC movie, the only other station to show gay themed films long before Showcase showed up.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 12, 2018 6:06 PM |
Showcase now is just reruns of shit such as NCIS, and other network garbage with no curation or original, edgy programming (do any of you remember Cameron Bailey introducing movies on Showcase 15-20 years ago?) To think that was the channel where I used to see "Madagascar Skin" and a bunch of small, interesting gay arthouse movies.

Yes R20! Do you remember Chas Lawther?

For a while it might as well have been called The CSI: Miami channel because they aired episodes 6 times a day.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 12, 2018 8:52 PM |
Oh yes, things were so much better in the day when you couldn't just stream a movie anytime you wanted.
I remember when I first saw My Beautiful Launderette. I don't remember how I ended up seeing it, probably just went with friends. The gay content came as a complete surprise to me.

Please no! This is one of my favorite movies. As r9 said, simple, perfect and lovely.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 5, 2018 8:37 PM |
Yet another pointless remake. Come up with something original. Not for money's sake, but for art's sake. Remember that?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 5, 2018 10:24 PM |
So did this ever happen?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 17, 2020 5:02 PM |
Too old, too ugly
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 17, 2020 5:09 PM |
Nothing on it since those two year old articles.
Hopefully someone told him he was 15 years too old to play the role
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 17, 2020 5:10 PM |
I find him very sexy, but I agree he is too old to play Omar.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 17, 2020 5:11 PM |
He’s not to old if DDL reprises his role as the boyfriend. If Glenn can do it....
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 17, 2020 5:41 PM |
DDL would never, R30.
And this is an atrocious idea in the first place. The original film was a made for TV movie that got a theatrical release, so there's nothing special about remaking it for TV. There doesn't seem to have been any progress since that Variety article, so hopefully the project is dead.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 17, 2020 5:54 PM |
awesome movie---any remake will almost certainly be pendantically "woke."
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 17, 2020 5:55 PM |
I remember when it played in Boston years ago. In the scene where Omar and Johnny are making out in the backroom, you could hear a pin drop in the theater. I had a major crush on DDL after that, esp. with the blond hair and black roots.

Is Kumail gay?
