I just saw the trailer for this gay teenager movie, playing before The Greatest Showman ( I guess they know their audience)
It's nice to see a preview for a gay-themed movie playing on a general release program.

Is this film based on YA novel [italic]Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda[/italic]?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 11, 2018 4:57 AM |
R1 that's the working title on IMDB, so quite possible.
But the most important question for DL, does Simon get to kiss Colto in the movie?

BUT WHERE ARE THE TRANS WOMEN OF COLOR?!?!?!?!

You paid to see The Greatest Showman?!

I will boycott if they have anything trans-related at all, R3.

Nick Robinson has been avoiding publicity like a plague. It’s kinda sad, especially since he was one of my most promising candidates.
I am excited that this was DL fav Joey Pollari’s first job in years.

Id shower with Josh Duhmel.....hes still fine as fuck.

How's the novel?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 13, 2018 8:22 AM |
R15 , I listened to the audiobook and everything about it is "adorable", "cute", super educational. Basically It's a young adult book written by a woman for teenage girls. It's not how horny gay teenagers behave, and it's almost 180 degrees from the unapologetic raw sexuality of CMBYN. It's good for what it is, I guess. BTW, one thing that I found hilarious was at the end of the book as the protagonist drives to meet his mysterious love interest (they email each other anonymously throughout the book), he puts Sufjan Stevens in his Ipod, apparently that's the new gold standard for any gay romance...
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 13, 2018 8:45 AM |
Tony Randall was great in this, Swoozy not so much, OK she sucked the meat.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 16, 2018 3:30 PM |
I saw the trailer for this when I went to see CMBYN and I thought it looked cute. A feel good movie for teenager girls and their closeted gay BFFs.

[bold]Cute Coming-Out Tale Gives Gay Teens Their John Hughes Moment[/bold]
Review for TheWrap by Alonso Duralde.
I didn’t know how badly I needed to see two gay teens have a John Hughes happy ending until “Love, Simon” showed me what one looks like.
And while this adaptation of Becky Albertali’s YA novel is safe as milk compared to the LGBTQ stories that indie and foreign filmmakers have been telling for the last few decades, it’s still a big deal that this boy-meets-boy romance was produced by Fox 2000 and is being released by 20th Century Fox into thousands of theaters nationwide. It’s an even bigger deal that a mainstream movie this groundbreaking also manages to be sweet and charming, and not merely a good-for-you exercise in tolerance and understanding.
Queer pundits will no doubt take “Love, Simon” to task for being too white, too cisgender, too heteronormative. And they won’t be wrong. But even if this is “Call Me By Your Name” through the lens of the Disney Channel, there’s a place in the culture for adolescent gay kids to enjoy the shiny, shallow, pop-song-infused coming-of-age stories that their straight peers consume on a daily basis. The first one out of the gate always plays it safe; the trick now is to keep the gate open.
I still remember trying to host gay movie nights back in the early 1990s, and how difficult it was to find films that weren’t depressing and tragic; say what you will about “Love, Simon,” it’s upbeat and life-affirming and exactly the kind of movie I would have watched over and over again (on the sly) as a closeted teenager.
Full review at the link. I cringed at the trailer but will watch it when it comes out on streaming.

[bold]‘Love, Simon’ Is the Gay Coming-of-Age Movie We’ve Been Waiting For[/bold]
Kevin Fallon's review for the Daily Beast.
‘Love, Simon’ is a gay coming-of-age story so sweeping and emotional—and with such mass appeal—that we almost can’t believe it exists. (But are so happy it does.)
What Love, Simon does is extraordinary.
It’s a coming-of-age film in the classic sense, and will likely become a classic in its own right, based on the wondrous execution of its rarely-touched subject matter: a story that lends the humor, dignity, angst, and uber-heightened drama of the very best, most relatable high school dramedies to the experience of a gay teen. Think the charm of Ferris Bueller, the identity crisis of Cady Herron, the from-afar crush of Samantha Baker, and the big-swing grand gestures of a The Fault in Our Stars or Say Anything. Again, but gay!
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 27, 2018 12:20 AM |
After a year that gave us Call Me By Your Name, 120 Beats Per Minute, God's Own Country, and The Wound this seems like a letdown...
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 27, 2018 12:21 AM |
R28 I actually think this is more exciting? There have been numerous art house gay films, but there's never been a wide release gay teen dramedy/coming out movie.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 27, 2018 12:23 AM |
Exactly
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 27, 2018 12:24 AM |
r28 None of those had mass appeal, though. We're still waiting for a gay movie that will manage to achieve that.
Of course, that doesn't mean gay movies should necessarily be made *primarily* with mass appeal in mind, but that will nonetheless be an important milestone when it happens.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 27, 2018 12:25 AM |
This reviewer acknowledges that it is bland, generic movie, but agrees with those other posters who feel that it is important because it is mainstream.
I admit my reaction to the trailer was to think of unremarkable it seemed, the coming out gay teen film (Hi "Shelter", "Get Real", "Beautiful Thing" to list some famous ones), but I guess we are supposed to be impressed that this is mainstream and in theory people who aren't gay will see it. I don't know, I can't get excited about it.

by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 27, 2018 12:37 AM |
r32 Funny you should mention Beautiful Thing. That reviewer's husband, Dave White, brought up this movie on a podcast I listened to just last week. He recalled the big impact it had on him when he saw it in the theatres for the first time. So I watched the YouTube clip of that scene in the forest he mentioned and it is indeed glorious to behold. However, the acting in the scene that follows is really not that great. Hopefully, the lead actor in this movie has done a better job with the more emotional scenes.
And this is definitely just the first step. We'll get mainstream movies with gay teens eating ass left and right in no time, you'll see.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 27, 2018 12:40 AM |
Variety's take
A studio-made romantic comedy for teens with a closeted gay protagonist marks an important first, even if the movie is pretty much average in all other respects.
“Love, Simon” is so accessible that gay teens don’t even appear to be its target audience; rather, the movie seems more ideally suited to young women — essentially the U.S. equivalent of the avid female readership that sustains Japan’s massive yaoi comic-book market. If this pioneering film is a success (a big “if,” since the young men who need it most might be too self-conscious to see it in theaters), expect more female-friendly gay-male love stories marketed at teens — the ultimate upside of which will be a chance to show those struggling with oppression, suicidal thoughts, and the other trappings of the closet that they are not alone, and need not feel ashamed.

Of course it is. They're the target market here, not gays.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 27, 2018 12:50 AM |
So exactly the same as with CMBYN, then. SPC didn't bother marketing that one to gays either. But whatever, if the fraus bring in the cash, who are we to complain?

Grace Randolph gushes over it. Calls it a perfect movie.
Says the girls at her press screening were squealing their heads off at the ending, but some of those people are usually paid to influence the film critics. Actual reactions will probably be more toned down.

Call Me By Your Name was an arthouse film. That non-rushed directing and sensual atmosphere type filmmaking about a bunch of academics in Europe was never going to be some mainstream success. It did well in urban areas, and when it tried to expand more broadly it didn't do so hot.

Nick says in this interview that his younger brother came out to him while he was filming Love, Simon.
"For Robinson, the movie’s subject matter became a lot more personal at one point — his little brother came out to him during filming.
“In the story, I was trying to do justice to that. If anything, [his brother coming out] was kind of exciting,” he said. “For me anyway, I had a feeling for many years about it — I was just very proud of him for taking that step. It just made it closer to home for me telling the story. It felt like we were making something that could potentially help people, which is a good feeling.”"

Honestly, R96, all evidence points to him not being gay. He’s occasionally had random girls on his IG stories, and just made a big deal about how his little brother came out to him while filming this movie.
Of course if he IS gay, it would be the ideal fulfillment of the message of the film-that coming out should be done on one’s own terms. And I still follow him on social media, because I still have hope...and he’s still an attractive twink with no public relationships.
