Yes, there just may a method to Colby's madness. I've said for a long time that Trump as POTUS may turn out to be just what this country has needed for a long time. We've needed something so bad, so heinous, so vile to happen in Washington that would force even many of the deplorables to change their ways of thinking about the Republican party. I think that has happened. Sure, there are still, and will always be, a group who are either too arrogant, corrupt, or unintelligent, who will never change their mindsets. But I have seen, far more than I ever believed I would see, former right wing conservatives who have changed their minds about the Republican party in the last year. They see that the Republican party of today is nothing like the republican party of 40 years ago. The Democratic party of today is more like the Republican part of 40 years ago. Until that changes a lot of these folks will not be voting Republican again. So we have the ascent of Trump to thank for that. Now we just have to hope and pray Trump doesn't destroy us before we can get rid of him and his ilk forever.

Neither party is what it once was, R59. Clinton-era democrats (that's Bill, not Hill) supported immigration restrictions, supported the Second Amendment, supported commitment ceremonies instead of gay marriage, etc. The party has moved further left on a number of issues.

Personally, while I support some of those transitions (gay marriage being the obvious), I don't agree with the full Democratic platform circa 2018.

I've never had the urge to own or use a gun, and I'd support stronger laws around obtaining guns, but I think it's a mistake to suggest the Second Amendment be repealed. Obtaining guns is certainly a factor in these school shootings, but it's not a driving factor. The shooter isn't deciding to shoot up a school (or concert, or church, etc.) because he has access to guns. Focusing this whole argument on guns and making the NRA the boogeyman is missing the forest for the trees.

While I support immigration from multiple countries, I do believe there need to be controls and restrictions on the numbers and identities of who we take in, partially for safety reasons, and partially for financial/economic reasons.

While I've historically supported the democratic platform on 90% of their positions, I feel that slipping away year after year. Which is not to say I support Republican positions, I just feel I've become a man without a home when it comes to politics.
