Kissing Jessica Stein

When this movie was released, it had a low-budget promo campaign that didn't interest me at all.

It's is one of the better "gay-themed" films, and isn't as contrived and patronizing as a lot of them are.

Did you see this movie when it first came out and what do you think of it?

-The cab scene where Helen and Jessica talk about blending lipstick was filmed after the filmmakers hailed a cab, paid the driver $20, the director drove, the director of photography was in the front seat and the sound woman climbed in the back trunk.

-Some background shots were removed from the film prior to its release because they showed the World Trade Center.

-Many extras in the film were people who just happened to be walking by the cameras during filming in New York City.

-Most of the film was shot in New York City and Connecticut but a couple of scenes, including the bookstore scene between Josh and Jessica, were re-shot in Los Angeles.

-Future Broadway and Disney megastar Idina Menzel (RENT, Wicked, Frozen) has a small role in this movie.

-Film debut of Michael Ealy.

-In the beginning of the film, Jessica is set up on a blind date by a co-worker and friend. The date was played by Jon Hamm, with whom Jennifer Westfeldt was in a real life relationship with at the time.

Have I seen it?! I’ve known Jen since Yale... she annoys the fuck out of everyone around her.

Tovah is the best thing about it... and Jackie Hoffman

We must have been classmates, R1!

The personal ads premise will always represent that moment in time.

The scene outside the house between Jessica and her mom is amazingly touching.

Jealous of my hole stretching bf, bitches?

Always saw this annoying trailer before Moulin Rouge and wondered if this poor man's Lisa Kudrow would get far.

I remember certain scenes that were shot and acted well, like when she walks slowly up the spiral stairs, ignoring her answering machine.

The trailer made me not want to see it. It was cheesy, like Tony and Tina's wedding., but I think it's a good movie

It's one of the few lesbian movies that isn't totally embarrassing in quality.

by Anonymousreply 12January 9, 2018 4:11 AM

I saw it when I was s kid. I liked it.

by Anonymousreply 13January 9, 2018 4:46 AM

I saw it when it came out. I have owned it for years. Westfeldt was perfectly neurotic in the movie but IRL she would annoy the fuck out of me.

Tovah really was excellent, especially that long monologue scene. That's a really powerful moment.

Her lack of follow up speaks volumes - probably had connections that made this first movie happen for her.

She always looked pissed having to stand next to Jon Hamm during the Mad Men days as the "plus one".

Can't really blame her if it's true that he would hit on other women right in front of her.

Jackie Hoffman steals this entire movie with the scene when she finds out her friend has gone lez. I tried to find on YouTube but alas. This is a super charming, highly watchable movie. Perfect for a lazy Sunday.

Tovah is really good in this.

by Anonymousreply 20October 8, 2019 10:29 AM

There are some obvious low-budget scenes

The director of this movie also did [italic]The Facts of Life Reunion[/italic], a Columbia-Disney co-production that brought Lisa Whelchel back to the studio that made her a Mouseketeer. They now own this film because of the Fox deal.
