Actors with Voices You Love

Shohreh Aghdashloo.

During this crazy cold snap, I was bundled up watching The Punisher on Netflix when Shohreh Aghdashloo showed up in a very secondary role.

Her soothing, slightly raspy voice made me feel even warmer as I was curled up in a blanket.

I almost wanted to turn off the set and have her read me a bedtime story till I fell asleep.

Which actor voices do you love to listen to?

Yes, her voice is amazing. I loved her in 24. (and her guest spot on Will and Grace years back was hilarious)

Christine Baranski in anything

Shohreh's voice is great but she has trouble delivering long sentences (like on The Expanse) so she pauses at the most awkward points and stresses the wrong words all the time. Breath control is hard when you're a smoker, I guess.

Anyway, I call her Shohreh "instant gravitas" Aghdashloo. She's great in anything she does.

by Anonymousreply 3January 7, 2018 2:24 PM

Loved her in The Exorcism Of Emily Rose.

Brenda Strong. Her voice overs in "Desperate Housewives" are seldom appreciated.

Bette Davis - seriously, such a cool, old raspy guttural voice. Plus the phenomenal personality - even when she was super old.

Shohreh is also lovely to work with, a class act. Not afraid to smile and say hi to anyone on set, including sweaty PAs. I was pleasantly surprised to see her in, "The Punisher".

Sherry Stringfield

Shohreh also has one of the best goddamned scenes I've ever seen on telly sci-fi. It's quite the smackdown.

Alan Rickman, Richard Armitage, and David Niven.

by Anonymousreply 13January 7, 2018 4:30 PM

Alan Rickman (of course) John malcovich (did I spell that right?)

I've come to appreciate malcovich's voice quite a bit more this past year. His diction is just. So.

[QUOTE]Shohreh's voice is great but she has trouble delivering long sentences (like on The Expanse) so she pauses at the most awkward points and stresses the wrong words all the time.

I think she doesn't understand some of her lines. She still sells the performance though.

by Anonymousreply 28January 7, 2018 6:52 PM

Always been in love with JAne Fonda's voice (And acting)

by Anonymousreply 29January 7, 2018 6:52 PM

R28 Either that or she's trying to apply the flow and melody of Farsi (which you can hear in OP's video) to English sentences and it just comes across as awkward.

She swallows the word "corporations" and completely butchers the line about civil servants. I don't think the acting was that great either; the hand movements especially smack of a first take. I love Shohreh but that clip makes me cringe.

by Anonymousreply 30January 7, 2018 7:04 PM

Good one, R29. I love Jane Fonda's voice too.

Boris Karloff had a great voice.

R30, I was speaking generally and not about that specific scene. We could quibble about particular scenes, or whether the character could be written better, or speculate about the role of the director. But on the whole I like her as Avasarala. Her, Thomas Jane, and the guy who plays Amos are the best things about the show IMHO.

by Anonymousreply 31January 7, 2018 7:22 PM

Idris Elba. It doesn't matter if he's using his real accent or an American accent his voice is amazing.

Eartha Kitt has a fascinating voice, totally commanding, full of sharp intelligence.

It's an odd mix of old-school Hollywood mid-Atlantic accent and hyper-precision.

It's no wonder she was cast as Catwoman, but that's just a tiny slice of her life. I wish more people got a chance to see her perform live. She was fantastic, and no one did onstage patter better.

I'm shocked no one has said James Earl Jones...the original Darth Vader himself.

The following is fairly off topic, but the OPs mention of Shohreh Aghdashloo reminds me of how - based on her voice - I had always imagined her playing a specific character from the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series (aka the 'Game of Throne' books). Unfortunately, the character is excised from the television adaptation.

It's the only time while reading that series where I 'fan casted' a real world actor for a specific character. Her voice was THAT ideal for the character in question.

Lots of well-known actors from classic Hollywood trademarked themselves with their voices: Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, et al.

Bette Davis may be my favorite. It's not a pretty voice, and certainly not soothing, but it's definitely distinctive and hooks the audience onto every syllable.

Yes to Jean Arthur as well. Could be a voice that grates after awhile but never does.
