Omg Luther! 😲😩😢 Rest In Peace.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 6, 2018 6:23 PM |
So sad. I loved him in Dawson's Creek.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 6, 2018 6:24 PM |
Who?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 6, 2018 6:33 PM |
Loved him on the Judy Garland Show.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 6, 2018 6:37 PM |
Nuts! JvD was on my deathpool long list! I knew from last May he wasn't well.
I wonder if DvD has come to suspect a conspiracy and is out to warn Carl Reiner.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 6, 2018 6:43 PM |
I always liked him
His daughter now deceased did porn
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 6, 2018 6:48 PM |
Never liked him. If Dick wasn't his brother, he'd still be in Danville IL playing banjo at the bus stop.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 6, 2018 6:48 PM |
I loved him in King Lear.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 6, 2018 6:50 PM |
86?
So young!
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 6, 2018 6:52 PM |
Tragic. Too young to die...
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 6, 2018 6:52 PM |
OMG!!!!
I haven't thought of this guy in 20 years and then yesterday morning I thought of him while driving to work, no clue why, and wondered if he was still alive.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 6, 2018 6:57 PM |
Had no idea Dick van dyke Haden a younger brother in showbiz. But RIP to him.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 6, 2018 6:58 PM |
She killed herself r8. Years of drug use and a slide into porn probably didn’t make for a happy life.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 6, 2018 6:59 PM |
German Van Lesbian
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 6, 2018 7:02 PM |
I prefer Dick
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 6, 2018 7:02 PM |
By far the worst of Mary Richards' terrible boyfriends.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 6, 2018 7:03 PM |
First his son Barry, now his brother. I feel for Dick.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 6, 2018 7:06 PM |
Loved him on Coach. Sad.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 6, 2018 7:07 PM |
Much love to my wonderful TV dad #jerryvandyke and condolences to my TV dad-in-law #dickvandyke. Jerry, you were hilarious and terrifically talented - what an honor to be able to watch up close as you and your brother create your special magic. Rest In Peace Jerry...
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 6, 2018 7:09 PM |
I fucking hated him. Especially on The Judy Garland Show.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 6, 2018 7:11 PM |
He couldn't have been a good father if his daughter ended up in porn and on drugs.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 6, 2018 7:13 PM |
I'm still here R19.
It was a hoax.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 6, 2018 7:16 PM |
He was great on Coach, funnier than Dick.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 6, 2018 7:17 PM |
So unfunny. Never liked either Jerry or Dick. Both unfunny to me. And annoying.
WTF with his daughter? What kind of dysfunction do you grow up with to end up like that? To even consider such a path?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 6, 2018 7:17 PM |
One of my earliest TV memories: "My Mother The Car" starring Jerry Van Dyke.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 6, 2018 7:21 PM |
I have no idea what he was like as a parent, but his daughter was 33. He was no longer responsible for her choices. And sometimes great parents end up with bad kids and sometimes shitty parents end up with good kids. He has two other kids who have led quiet lives so who knows what went on.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 6, 2018 7:28 PM |
She died at 33, still quite young, but at what age did she start in porn or on drugs?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 6, 2018 7:31 PM |
What kind of heartless cunt do you have to be to not love him on Coach? Luther is one of the most beloved characters in sitcom history.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 6, 2018 7:34 PM |
Apparently the porn was not long before she killed herself r30. The drug addiction was long standing. Maybe she’d been cut off financially and turned to porn to pay for drugs. Who knows.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 6, 2018 7:35 PM |
I didn't hate him but his characters always grated on my nerves.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 6, 2018 7:38 PM |
His agent advised him to turn down the role of Gillian in Gilligan's Island.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 6, 2018 7:38 PM |
Now Dauber will NEVER pass the test!
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 6, 2018 7:48 PM |
Was never a huge "Coach" fan, but always found vanDyke funny. But that obnoxious Shelley Fabares"... ugh. Johnny Angel, my ass.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 6, 2018 7:54 PM |
R19, I imagine you weren't serious, but to those unaware DVD's son Barry was falsely rumored to have died.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 6, 2018 7:56 PM |
What happened?? Did he have a heart attack?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 6, 2018 7:57 PM |
He was old, Rose.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 6, 2018 7:58 PM |
No, I'm old.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 6, 2018 8:00 PM |
Six Degrees: Jerry Van Dyke's daughter, Kelly Jean Van Dyke, who was at one point an adult film performer, was best friends with Lisa Loring, who was not an adult film performer but played Wednesday Addams on TV's The Addams Family (1964-66). Lisa Loring was married at one time to Jerry Butler, who was a well-known an adult film performer.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 6, 2018 8:00 PM |
I thought he had died a few years ago. Never was a fan - love The Dick Van Dyke Show but hated his episodes.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 6, 2018 8:01 PM |
He was funny on The Middle as Tag, Frankie's dad.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 6, 2018 8:03 PM |
awww, he had a nice run there at the end on "The Middle" at least. He and Marsha Mason were good together (though the brothers episode with Dick Van Dyke was the worst in "Middle" history if you ask me, painful to watch). Glad he went out as the show was ending its run too so he was still on top.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 6, 2018 8:03 PM |
Old rose?, No, he was more of a dust pink. Now, he's greige.
Seriously, he was the spokesperson for Hersey Park for one summer (and one summer only). He was the most obnoxious person.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 6, 2018 8:04 PM |
I always found him grating. He really did build a career on begging for favors.
that he got awards and his own sit com just runs me. ick.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 6, 2018 8:15 PM |
Hated him on the Judy Garland show, sucking all the air out of the room with his corny shtick.
And making fun of Judy of all people.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 6, 2018 8:16 PM |
He played Stacy Petrie, Rob Petrie's bumbling, banjo-playing brother, on some memorable episodes of the Dick Van Dyke Show. It was the only time I ever liked him. One hilarious ep had him on a "practice date" with Sally Rogers (Rose Marie), and was beat up by her nebbish boyfriend Herman Glimpsher.
He also was about to play George the handyman on the 80s Newhart show. Tom Poston. an old friend of Bob Newhart, was cast instead.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 6, 2018 8:20 PM |
He couldn't imagine living in a world without Rose Marie.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 6, 2018 8:21 PM |
r9
Luther was a great role, but I did not like him in anything else.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | January 6, 2018 8:42 PM |
He is the first major celebrity to die, this year, of course, I won't be in the roll for this year or the year after or even the DECADE after
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 6, 2018 8:44 PM |
Val is the new Zsa Zsa.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 6, 2018 8:48 PM |
Damn DL, you guys are slipping. It took 42 replies before the "I thought he was all ready dead" poster to show up.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | January 6, 2018 8:52 PM |
Aww. Years ago I remember him being charming on David Letterman. There was a "real person" who was also a guest - a 24 year old woman tourist (of course - that was David Letterman's favorite age. JVD was telling some anecdote about his youth, and he mentioned to the woman - in a nice way - it fitted into his story - that she wouldn't always be 24. She won't believe him, but she'll get older too. Then he continued. I liked him.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | January 6, 2018 8:55 PM |
Really, Valerie @ r51, your use of the modifier "major" is questionable.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | January 6, 2018 8:56 PM |
Some of the sordid details of Jerry's daughters sad life and death.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | January 6, 2018 8:57 PM |
And, yet, still no tweet from his mother the car?
by Anonymous | reply 57 | January 6, 2018 9:00 PM |
Finally, he can ride Ann Sothern for eternity.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | January 6, 2018 9:00 PM |
That car and Susan Fucking Dey.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | January 6, 2018 9:01 PM |
R41, Six degrees: Butler was born Paul Siederman in Brooklyn to a Jewish father and a mother of half German/Irish and half Cherokee Native American descent. His paternal grandfather, Sam Siederman, was the half-brother of Russian Communist leader Leon Trotsky.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | January 6, 2018 9:08 PM |
R60 Supposedly Kelly Van Dyke and Butler were having an affair and were planning on leaving their respective spouses (Jack Nance and Lisa Loring) to be with each other. Then Kelly hung herself after a heated telephone conversation with Nance was cut off accidently by a thunderstorm on location while Nance was working on the movie Meatballs 4.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | January 6, 2018 9:17 PM |
Christ, the Frank Stallone of the 60s. Who cares?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | January 6, 2018 9:21 PM |
I was thinking about him when I watched this week's "The Middle" episode, which prominently featured John Cullum in his role as Mike's dad.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | January 6, 2018 9:21 PM |
Wait, Barry died? Is that the hot son who was on Diagnosis Murder.? If so, I missed that death.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | January 6, 2018 9:24 PM |
No, Barry's still alive. It was a hoax.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | January 6, 2018 9:26 PM |
Sad news to hear but his brother Dick Van Dyke seems anyway to be in robust health. A possible future centerian.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | January 6, 2018 9:32 PM |
[quote]He also was about to play George the handyman on the 80s Newhart show. Tom Poston. an old friend of Bob Newhart, was cast instead.
R48. Tom Poston was also a former husband of Suzanne Pleshette, Bob Newhart's TV wife from the Bob's first show, The Bob Newhart Show, 1972-76.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | January 6, 2018 9:33 PM |
One last sad ride in his Aunt, the hearse.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | January 6, 2018 10:00 PM |
I love you, r68.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | January 6, 2018 10:05 PM |
[quote] Luther is one of the most beloved characters in sitcom history.
Good lord what a ridiculous exaggeration.
He may have been a lovely man in real life but he was an annoying actor playing annoying characters.
Tom Poston was Pleshette's last husband. Not a former husband.
The daughter was married to Jack Nance? Very interesting. Had to have been drugs. She freaked out enough to kill herself over a disconnected phone call? That's sad.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | January 6, 2018 10:15 PM |
R70 Kelly Van Dyke was a alcoholic (and who knows what else she might have been using) and had other mental issues as well apparently. Nance was an addict too. They were arguing on the phone and she told him if he hung up on her, she'd kill herself. It was storming were Nance was at and it knocked the phone line out after she said that. He managed to find a working phone and called the police to check on Kelly who was threating suicide. They did and found her dead from hanging herself. Lisa Loring sold a story to the tabloids that she found Kelly dead, but later admitted she lied about it. I don't know if she was desperate for money (she was a major druggie at that time) or she did it for revenge because Kelly and Loring's husband allegedly had an affair with Kelly. It's possibly she didn't know about it.
Months before Kelly died, she and Nance did a spanking porn together. Nance remained fully clothed in it though.

pretty sad and sordid at R56
by Anonymous | reply 72 | January 6, 2018 10:51 PM |
Does anyone other than me remember the dramedy he did with Lois Nettleton, ACCIDENTAL FAMILY?
by Anonymous | reply 73 | January 7, 2018 2:37 AM |
No, r73. Just you.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | January 7, 2018 3:33 AM |
Does the last name mean that his and Dick's mother was a lesbian?
If so I need her address, please.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | January 7, 2018 3:55 AM |
He should have gotten an Oscar nom for Palm Springs Weekend.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 7, 2018 4:00 AM |
It wasn't his fault he was terrible on "The Judy Garland Show." He was given awful stuff to do, like saying to Judy Garland "what's a nice little old lady like you doing on television?", or something like that. Making fun of Garland's age was supposed to be funny. He had talent but was always overshadowed by his brother Dick. It's a shame about his daughter, but I don't think how she ended up was his fault.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | January 7, 2018 4:05 AM |
[quote]Does anyone other than me remember the dramedy he did with Lois Nettleton, ACCIDENTAL FAMILY?
Yes -- DECADES recently showed a few episodes of it as part of their "Lost Television" programming.

[quote]I haven't thought of this guy in 20 years and then yesterday morning I thought of him while driving to work, no clue why, and wondered if he was still alive.
Your thinking of him obviously killed him then. You monster.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | January 7, 2018 5:27 AM |
Sadly, his son Ron seems to be a mess. He's been arrested several times in the past couple years for theft, trespassing and failure to comply.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | January 7, 2018 5:44 AM |
RIP may you rest in everlasting peace and tranquillity. God Bless You.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | January 7, 2018 5:49 AM |
r55
no he's a major star. he was a co-star on a top ten show and the brother of another major celebrity and appeared in one of, if not the most, universally panned tv show of all time. he was even nominated for a bunch of emmys.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | January 7, 2018 6:12 AM |
He had a child by a black woman in the 1960's but didn't claim or support him. Sometime in the 1980's or 1990s the National Enquirer ran a story about him -- he was ill and he and his wife and child were penniless and Jerry wouldn't help.
