I heard he was an asshole though. Watching reruns of Matchgame, and he appears to get mean sometimes. Crotchety.

My mother couldn't stand how he always kissed the women on the lips in Family Feud. She said he probably gave them mono.

I just watched Autofocus, the one about the death of Bob Crane. In it Crane says Dawson used to make homophobic jabs at him during their time on Hogan's Heroes.

During MG's run, he became well known for many, many successful head to head matches. That was the climactic game, where the contestant only had to match one celebrity.
The wheels came off the wagon around 1977 and 1978 when a, CBS moved MG to the midday and eventually to the 4 p.m. dead zone (one wonders how it would have done opposite the resurgent General Hospital); b, Goodson-Todman added the Star Wheel to MG, insulting Richard; c, Richard's ego had grown because of the success of Family Feud and wouldn't come down for years after (he "stopped participating" on MG, acting as a cranky dick).
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 6, 2018 5:19 AM |
He smoked like a chimney, just like Johnny Carson.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 6, 2018 5:21 AM |
Did he ever fuck the same sex??
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 6, 2018 5:23 AM |
He was married to Diana Dors from 1959-1966. Dors was notorious for her celebrity-filled sex parties.

R16 so maybe he seems kinky

re: R5's clip: holy shit, he was gorgeous when younger!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 6, 2018 11:04 AM |
Richard Dawson was one of those guys that most women don't mind if they hug them or are flirty with them. Joe Biden is like that too.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 6, 2018 11:19 AM |
[quote]Dors was notorious for her celebrity-filled sex parties.
And she filmed several of them. So I wonder if there's a video out there of Dawson having sex.

As a little girl, I thought he was a creepy asshole. I hoped we would never have to go on the show “Family Feud” because I didn’t want to kiss someone on the lips who had shared so many germs.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 7, 2018 11:48 PM |
It's funny how his accent would careen from Hampshire to Cockney to RP and everywhere in between before settling on a quasi mid-Atlantic with a Texas twinge....even calling all the women "darlin'" like J.R. Ewing.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 8, 2018 12:29 AM |
Richard Dawson really became so Americanized. It's funny how some Brits seem to fall right into U.S. culture and attitudes and get totally immersed.
God, the 70s were so unironic and self-unaware and that's not always a bad thing.
And Lyle Waggoner was was legit gorgeous with great posture.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 8, 2018 12:38 AM |
I remember him actually being very kind to some of the Family Feud families. He could read them pretty well.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 8, 2018 12:42 AM |
Other British entertainers used to mock him. He was from Hampshire and married Diana Dors and went our to America based on her success.
When The Beatles became famous he started using a Scouse accent and trying to gain popularity by attempting to convince Americans he was from the same place in the U.K. as The Beatles. To explain to Americans how ludicrous this is, it would be like someone from New England claiming they were from Louisiana and putting on a really thick accent.
He then decided he was going to speak in an American accent!

R38 that’s who he married??
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 8, 2018 4:02 AM |
Diana Dors was the British Marilyn Monroe, but IMO, she looked like a busted impersonator. And like France's Simone Signoret, she packed on the pounds early in her career.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 8, 2018 5:15 AM |
R40 beautiful
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 8, 2018 5:23 AM |
I liked Dawson's wry sense of humor on Match Game. It was intelligent and adult. When Johnny Carson was threatening to leave The Tonight Show in the late 70s, Dawson was a serious contender as a possible replacement.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 8, 2018 6:15 AM |
R42 interesting I had no idea.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 8, 2018 8:43 PM |
Wasn't Diana Dors the one who hid her money somewhere, then gave her son a secret code to find it and the son could never break the code to find out where the money was?

R44 oh now we are getting to some scoop!!
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 8, 2018 9:18 PM |
Upthread, someone claimed he made homo jabs at Bob Crane. I wonder if either of those two ever dabbled in man to man action. I doubt it, but I always wondered.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 8, 2018 9:22 PM |
r46, according to the Bob Crane movie (which could be fiction), Crane freaked out when the other male sex partner touched him. There's one whole scene dedicated to that in the movie.

he had a very high Q score. I don't know about his fan mail though.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 8, 2018 10:40 PM |
So according to r51's data, he was popular because the fraus got moist when they watched him.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 8, 2018 10:42 PM |
You got that right, R6!
by Anonymous | reply 53 | January 8, 2018 10:42 PM |
I wonder what the highest rated one was.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | January 8, 2018 10:47 PM |
Good question. If it's the fall of '77, we can guess The Price is Right, Pyramid or Match Game. Wheel of Fortune wouldn't become huge until the Pat & Vanna years. Tattletales was nearing its end.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | January 8, 2018 10:58 PM |
D'oh! I forgot Hollywood Squares and The Gong Show. There were also a handful of newcomers.

by Anonymous | reply 60 | January 9, 2018 7:42 AM |
There used to be a joke that some woman was so homely (all together now: how homely was she?) that even Richard Dawson refused to kiss her when she went on "Family Feud"!
I've watched some reruns recently of FF, and I think a few women do turn their cheeks to him so he doesn't kiss them on the lips once in a while.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | January 9, 2018 7:52 AM |
R59 not that anyone knows of...he just drank and smoked like it was the 70s.
He sure liked to tan, too.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | January 9, 2018 7:53 AM |
I think Brett and Charles got pissed that most contestants picked Richard to go one on one with him on "Match Game". Brett especially used to give some stupid answers (either intentionally trying to get a laugh or just gave her fair share of bad answers during the main game). But she did try to give her all when she was occasionally called on to do the one on one "exact match". I bet Charles was a fun person to know -- actually probably so was Brett. Fanny Flagg and Betty White had a good percentage of right answers, but they both came off as very smart ladies. Fanny's a terrific writer.
