If you witnessed a "friend", who is a newly practicing medical professional, bumping meth on several occasions while out clubbing, would you report him? I've confronted him about seeking treatment, which he refused, saying he has it under control. It's not like he's a brain surgeon, but does work on patients.
Doctor Doing Meth

Many doctors are guilty of drug use, dentists are the worst from my experience. You won't get anywhere reporting him since he is doing this during non-working hours, you have no evidence it is affecting his work since you say you are a friend and not a patient or co-worker.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 6, 2018 12:59 AM |
I 've never known any licensed medical professionals so reckless as to publicly use illicit drugs. I would still report him even if nothing comes of your complaint, it will start a document trail that may save someone's life. You need to have clear conscious. His career will be a short one.

Story of my life!

I had a roommate who was a doctor. He had lots of doctor friends (all diverse) and they all did hardcore drugs and acted like they had it under control cause they knew how much to take. One of them gave me a lecture about how bad ketchup is (I use ketchup). He was hot so I listened and didn’t even roll my eyes at him. He ended up overdosing in heroin. Anyway my impression since is that drug use is big in m rival fields.

There was some doctor at St Vincent’s in NYC who was a pioneer in AIDS medicine in the 80s. Once drug cocktails came out he got depressed because he liked the adrenaline rush of working in the midst of the crisis. He became a circuit party queen and got hooked on all kinds of drugs, probably meth too, and lose his license because he was selling drugs or prescriptions or whatever. Sad. He wound up homeless and burnt out.

I went to that dentists office as well, R10, and it was nasty when that all went down. Luckily my dentist had cleaned up his act way before this was all exposed in The NY Post etc.. Plus he retired right around that time. The entire office was tainted.

Hes out now, based from this blog post. NYU is taking a big chance hiring him as a researcher. Or maybe he’s the research subject!
Michael R Barr 22.97 · Pacific College of Oriental Medicine As many of you may know, Gabe was released two weeks ago (1 entire year early-- thanks so all your letters, and a decent judge, I suspect) and is back in NYC. He is to be starting on a research collaboration with the NYS Psychiatric Institute (Columbia University) and, I expect, expanding to even more projects and soul filling goodness.

I smoked weed with a psychotherapist at work in the parking ramp years ago. He was hilarious and very good at his job, but also very carefree. I'm thinking he was one of the few "shrinks" who was actually quite sane.
These professionals are all human too, they experience problems in life like the rest of us. Their jobs are high pressure/adrenalin surging situations. They think(like all others) that they are in control. They have more knowledge(and access to) drugs and their contraindications, however they fall like all the rest.

I knew Gabe (Ramon) Torres before his slide into addiction. He was such a dashing man in his suits. He was a quickly rise star in HIV medicine. With his addiction, he lost everything--his license, money, professional stature, reputation, freedom. It was so sad to see and read about.
I knew many who used meth. Only a few got that addicted, which is why I know there must be a biological component to addiction.
Glad to hear Gabe seems to be putting his life together again.

by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 6, 2018 3:19 AM |
I do not know much about meth use per se, but I am a medical professional (yes, a doctor) who regularly partied with other doctors of all disciplines during my early years in Dallas. We ALL did a lot of coke. This was usually only on the weekends and not on weeknights - but on occasions we did that also. I do not know of any drug usage during business hours, but yes doctors take drugs. We are one of the few professions that rarely if ever require being drug-tested.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 6, 2018 3:19 AM |

My young gay doctor friends (back in the 80s, 90s, thats my reference) were often also clubbers into party drugs. Thats the way it is.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 6, 2018 3:52 AM |
I know a doctor, dentist, and teaching anesthesiologist who all did party drugs and meth. Two of them had serious issues, the dentist’s resulting in his being permanently thrown out of the country, and the anesthesiologist’s resulting in losing his teaching job at a top ten rated medical school, his license, and his job. He’s in a massive depression now, and I sadly expect suicide soon.
He’s lost everything, including his home. He was reported by a colleague who had never actually witnessed him doing anything, and the resulting investigation ended his career. Anesthesiologists have major problems with addiction. As much as I suport my friend, everything they investigated and discovered was true, and there was a lot more they didn’t know about. I know for a fact he had patients on the table after three day meth and alcohol benders. He put people in mortal danger. Fortunately, they caught him before anything happened.
Meth is a terrible drug. The choice is yours OP.

I wished Gabe had done that when he first got caught and thus wouldn't have continued his spiral,

For the life of me, I can not understand WHY meth is addictive at all. Different strokes for different folks as they say - but I hate the stuff. And taking it DAILY?? I can't imagine what a tweaked out mess you would become. Besides, how does a meth addict ever sleep?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 6, 2018 4:16 AM |
On the weekends in the early 2000's, Meth led to a huge influx of guys to the bath houses, particularly on weekends.
I too would go during a meth bender. I would see, talk with, and have sex with a married (to a woman) cardiologist there. He was high on meth too. He said his wife knew he had a meth problem and also had sex with men, but she didn't know he was spending his weekends at the bathhouse.
He loved to get fucked by all comers.

I don't know that the board would do anything if it's just weekends or he isn't working. I think you would have to file a complaint as a patient or doctor/nurse that had firsthand knowledge that he was endangering patients/acting incompetent. I mean, you could call his work and give them a heads up and maybe they would do something about it, but more than likely they don't give a shit and just want to keep their job. If confronted, he could easily claim a jealous weirdo was making false claims against him.

by Anonymous | reply 79 | January 6, 2018 7:31 PM |
R79, meth is addictive because you get a HUGE rush of Seratonin. It makes you energetic, focused, not tired, and eventually, quite thin.
I never got into smoking it, but I have snorted it (never again-by the way), and the other upside” is that you have AMAZING sex while on it. You can fuck for 48 hours straight, and that right there, can be highly addictive.
I never did it to the point where I ruined my looks over it, like many end up doing. And that’s just part of it. Nevertheless, I never lost my teeth, or ended up with unseemly facial acne, or whatever that is that happens to people’s faces.
OP, what your friends do on their own time is truly none of your business. If he develops a problem, be there for him and be supportive. Otherwise, stay out of it. You can ruin someone’s career, & being that he’s casually using, something like that could tip the scales and he could go off the deep end.
I had a good friend that died that way. One of her coworkers reported her for using, which she was. She was brought before a disciplinary board, and was instructed to enter rehab. She ended up overdosing instead.

OP, I'm an attorney and we have a high rate of drug and alcohol use in our field. Our Texas State Bar has an assistance program where you can anonymously report someone. They will then call the person and tell them they received a concerned call and ask that person if they need help. It is confidential for everyone. I put on a continuing legal education seminar every year for some attorneys I supervise and have had the assistance program speak to us. All of them are in recovery and some asked for help when they received the concerned phone call and others at least knew who to call when they were ready for help. Your state medical licensing board certainly has something similar. Doctors have to be licensed so there will be a licensing agency in your state. Meth, even recreational, is not normal for a professional. There is a lot of stress in his profession so I would report him and give him the chance to get help. The attorneys who spoke to us all thought they could handle it, but where also in a lot of pain. Don't wait till he hits rock bottom. Contact your state medical board and see if they have a program where it can be reported and dealt with anonymously before he receives an official complaint to the board.

by Anonymous | reply 94 | January 6, 2018 11:20 PM |
What r89 said. Drug use is very common in medicine and they have their own rehab treatment programs for doctors and nurses. They know the field is stressful as fuck and they won’t move to fire someone for a first (or second, or third) offense; they’ll get him the help he needs to get clean. There’s a shortage of health care workers and it takes years and years to train them so no one is interested in tossing them out unless the offenses are egregious or they’ve relapsed for the umpteenth time and it’s clear they can’t be trusted with patients. You’ll be doing this person a favor. Report it.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | January 6, 2018 11:42 PM |
I own a small business and we NEVER confront anyone about drugs use. We don't have to. The behavior of an addict alone is enough to fire them without much fuss--falling asleep on the job, poor performance, money missing, lateness, no shows....on and on. I don't know why more employers don't get this. They really don't have to go down the rabbit hole of accusing someone of drug abuse. Addicts are VERY clever and creative with their excuses: improper dosing of prescription drugs is a popular favorite, as is lack of sleep. And they act aggressively indignant (always a tell) at being accused of such an awful thing. Just don't go there. NO need. They WILL fuck up and fairly quickly. Warn them about lateness, or whatever infraction(s), and tell them if they are "late" again they will be fired. Done and over. So simple.

I tried smoking meth twice with him, I didn't like it. It made me horny, but I couldn't achieve an erection. I haven't used it since. I guess not everyone gets immediately addicted? I never cared for coke, either.
Now pot, pot is something I really enjoy, which makes me think I would easily become addicted to heroin.
Does this make sense to anyone else?

I think is issue is most first timers end up doing way too much meth. You don't need a lot. Usually you kinda go along and "keep up" with the tolerance built up guy who's hosting and providing. Viagra is a must for tops and you gotta take it first and see the effects before you start the meth

"I think is issue is most first timers end up doing way too much meth."
Meth is the worst drug out there and causes the most trouble and pain. Any of it is too much of it. Just look at what you wrote, R116. You are really already in trouble.
Go get help and lay off the crystal.

um. If anyone you care even remotely about is doing meth, there is one alternative. You step in and intervene immediately. Period. It only ends one of three ways: financial breakdown and devistation; health breakdown and devistation; or legal breakdown and devistation. Anyone who says any different is an idiot.

First, R119, anyone starting a post with "um" should be slapped. Secondly, not everyone gets addicted to meth (or heroin, or cocaine, or any kind of opiod). You sound like the drug scare films from the 50's. Yes, it's addictive... to people who are pre-disposed to addiction. That's the real problem with all drugs, you don't know if you've got the kind of combintaion of physical and psychological makeup that makes you prone to misuse.
Fortunately, I found that although I really enjoyed meth and experienced a bit of progressive desensitivization so I could see how people get addicted, I had no trouble laying off it when my circumstances changed and I didn't have easy access any more.
You'd be far more effective at warning people off of it if you weren't so Chicken Little about it.

I’m a doctor in my 30s with many gay doctor friends. None of us do drugs (other than one who eats edible marijuana on his own time). Most gay doctors I know won’t smoke cigarettes or even take many sexual risks. We tend to be pretty careful with our health.
I’ve heard of the St. Vincents doctor and the dentist who ruined their lives due to addiction, and they’re infamous in the gay MD community. They are definitely the exception and most of us stay away from unhealthy habits.
Addiction is a disease. It is challenging enough to make it through medical school, residency and specialty training as a sober person; it would be extremely difficult for an addict to do so.

I've noted over the years I've known and or met a number of M.D.'s - they fall into 3 or 4 categories, A few examples, the drugs and drinking of course, but then there's the Jesus jumpers and then the ones with God complexes. When you run into one who isn't any one of those you count your blessings.
Now, Anesthesiologists - a friend once worked with one developing an automated program for dosing. I worked at a pharmacy at the time and asked the pharmacist about some of the drugs. Serious fun could be had with some of them. But I never succumbed to the temptation.

I never felt 'high' doing meth.
It gave me energy (but not a dirty speed energy) and there seemed to be a 'clarity', but never a feeling of being 'high'. I think that's where people get stuck, they don't feel messy on it, even though they appear so to everyone else.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | January 8, 2018 6:30 AM |
The fact that so many gay guys here have even tried meth proves gays can often be their own worst enemies.

It's so easy to try. So why not? Live life and try not to fuck things up is the general rule. Personally I like the idea of it, but doesn't live up to my fantasies. Crash is way too hard and takes two days to recover

Meth was big in the 00's. The gay community tolerated it because no one knew that it could lead to horrible addiction. Once we discovered that, gays vilifed it. Most people stopped using but those who found themselves addicted just spiraled downward.
I used it a few times but stopped when I realized that it just wasn't giving me the same intense feelings anymore. Plus the hangovers were horrible,
Sad to see this drug resurging now. It was a good decade of not hearing much about it.

What if OP's acquaintance was not an MD, but rather in another medically related role, such as RN or some sort of therapist? I had an ex who was a physical therapist who basically told me "stay on my side of the street" when encouraged him to seek treatment for meth abuse. He replied that I didn't know what I was talking about, since he's dealt with doctors smelling of vodka. That's when I realize his weekend partying has impacted his cognitive abilities. Sometimes there's no point in reasoning with an addict and have to do the right thing.

[quote]So many docs abuse. Opioids. With Beth I’m surprised the don’t get adderall so they can be sure they are not ingesting something cut with drain cleaner.
Adderall is not like meth r36. I've never tried meth but I have taken Adderall. No pleasurable rush from it, though it will make you awake and focused.
We are a very Puritan society. If Adderall gave that kind of pleasure rush they would not be prescribing it for anyone much less for children and they do give it to thousands of kids.
Is there any widely available prescription drug that gives the same rush as meth?

UUUUMMMM... and you would be far more effective R127 if you showed you actually graduated from high school and knew that 50s is plural (a group of years) not possessive (since 1950 doesn't own anything). So until you know how to use an apostrophe or not, I suggest you keep your two-bit opinion to yourself.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | January 9, 2018 12:58 AM |
I agree with the other non meth folks, it just never interested me. I knew what it would do and was turned off. I was offered it back in the mid/late 90's often and always declined. These were professional upstanding citizens who were doing this shit. Their lives all went to hell for which I don't feel sorry for them. They knew what they were getting into I would like to believe. I stopped hanging with anyone who even did it once or twice and then stopped. Never trust a junkie. I always stuck to weed and beer. X in the late 90's.. Now I'm done. Natural selection takes out the trash...

I've seen videos( not sure if it was YouTube) where these circuit queens were passing out in the street during a white party of some sort. Stumbling around on the verge of death doesn't found fun to me. I've heard from some that you have to know when to start switching up the drugs. Too much GHB, do a bump. To much meth, take an adderall...etc..etc...
by Anonymous | reply 175 | January 11, 2018 5:32 AM |
Yeah, meth and Adderall do the same thing really. GHB and K can definitely leave you in a bad place. The downers are usually worse than the uppers (when it comes to ODing and dying anyway) - yet the uppers give you one HELL of a hangover and the downers rarely do. If you want a drama/pain free life - just avoid all of the above LOL.
by Anonymous | reply 176 | January 11, 2018 5:39 AM |
I've done almost every drug, but damn if speed isn't the one I couldn't get enough of. I still dream about it. I wish I could find an unethical doctor who would prescribe Desoxyn.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | January 21, 2018 4:10 AM |
Outside of powder cocaine, I never could appreciate any form of upper. MDMA/Molly is amazing also (perhaps more so, but you are not functional socially like coke), but it has an even more brutal hangover. And even when I did appreciate either of them - I paid the price for days after, so they were never any issue from an addiction standpoint. I like the idea, but reality just isn't realistic in a world where you have a job and need to be productive 5/6 days a week. You feel invincible when the drug is working - but the hangover is such Hell that it more than negates the high. I am no prude and like to let loose on occasion, but would find a full fledged "habit" to be more pain than it is worth really. These drugs are best taken every 4 or 5 months or so - when you crave them and forget the Hellish aftermath.
