DLers-- what do you make of the lyrics of Sufjan Stevens' "Mystery Of Love" from CMBYN?

Commenters on Genius lyrics indicate he included some random bits from a previous song he wrote-- hence the lines about his brother's daughter (seems Stevens is close with his young niece) and a line about the Rogue River (his last album was about Oregon.) Seemed off to insert it into a song about two young men in love in Italy 1983 with mentions of Alexander and Hephaestion

[italic] [Verse 1]

Oh, to see without my eyes

The first time that you kissed me

Boundless by the time I cried

I built your walls around me

White noise, what an awful sound

Fumbling by Rogue River

Feel my feet above the ground

Hand of God, deliver me

[Chorus 1]

Oh, oh woe-oh-woah is me

The first time that you touched me

Oh, will wonders ever cease?

Blessed be the mystery of love

[Verse 2]

Lord, I no longer believe

Drowned in living waters

Cursed by the love that I received

From my brother's daughter

Like Hephaestion, who died

Alexander's lover

Now my riverbed has dried

Shall I find no other?

[Chorus 2]

Oh, oh woe-oh-woah is me

I'm running like a plover

Now I'm prone to misery

The birthmark on your shoulder reminds me

[Verse 3]

How much sorrow can I take?

Blackbird on my shoulder

And what difference does it make

When this love is over?

Shall I sleep within your bed

River of unhappiness

Hold your hands upon my head

Till I breathe my last breath

[Chorus 3]

Oh, oh woe-oh-woah is me

The last time that you touched me

Oh, will wonders ever cease?

Blessed be the mystery of love

Ancient iconography saturates the movie—it's what Oliver and the dad are experts in, hence the scene where they dredge up the old statue.

Yes-- that all made sense R1

I was talking about the random mention of the Rogue River and "my brother's daughter" -- both of which the Genius Lyrics users say are personal to Sufjan Stevens and have nothing to do with CMBYN.

Apparently he is straight, someone was part of his social group and hung out with his friends in Sunny's, Brooklyn's favorite hipster hangout. Gets drunk often hooks up with a lot of women. Like all hipsters he is faux liberal. He thinks only listening to hip hop is so cool and progressive diversity is heterosexual African American people hanging out with heterosexual white people listening to Beyonce, West and Drake.

So many threads about this movie

Does the rest of his music sound like this? I like it.

Futile Devices - Sufjan Stevens

It's been a long, long time Since I've memorized your face It's been four hours now Since I've wandered through your place And when I sleep on your couch I feel very safe And when you bring the blankets I cover up my face

I do Love you I do Love you

And when you play guitar I listen to the strings buzz The metal vibrates underneath your fingers And when you crochet I feel mesmerized and proud

And I would say I love you But saying it out loud is hard So I won't say it at all And I won't stay very long

But you are life I needed all along I think of you as my brother Although that sounds dumb

And words are futile devices

His music goes perfectly with that director's style of film-making.

Learned from Alexa today that it's pronounced "Suf-Yan"

She's good like that.

No thoughts on why he kept random things from his own life in a song he wrote specifically for the movie, where the rest of the lyrics are all about Elio and Oliver?

The beauty of the lyrics made me weep.

He contributed two new songs and a reworked old one to a movie about a same sex romance and he was happy to include reference to a famous same sex romance in one of the new songs. The reworked song speaks certainly of a deep love for a man whether or not it’s sexual/romantic.

My understanding is that the artist is very private about his personal romantic life.

Whether or not he has experienced same sex romance or is a gay man, it seems that despite still having a strong emotional Christian affiliation that he developed at Hope College a pretty traditional midwestern Christian School ( Dutch Reform) , he is ok with homosexuality.
