Why all the Cast Departures on "Call the Midwife"?

"Call the Midwife," the British period drama that has appeared on US public television for several years has gotten a reputation for high-quality stories told with exquisite attention to detail. Set in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the program dealt with the way "civilian" nurses and nuns worked together to keep the people of London's East End healthy in the midst of great poverty.

In spite of the show providing terrific acting opportunities for a large ensemble cast of mostly women, the show has undergone an astounding number of cast changes during its nine-season, 52 episode run: Jessica Raine ,Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart, Bryony Hannah, Ben Caplan, Emerald Fennell, and Kate Raine have all left.

For a tv drama of such consistent high-quality, this seems to be a large amount of turn-over. Any dish? Low pay? On-set divas? Is the show-runner a monster? Or is it simply that it's too much of an effort to get into period hair and make-up for so little air-time (in an ensemble show, there can only be so many storylines per episode) I'm just curious, since the show is one of my favorites and I can't imagine why an actor appearing in an acclaimed, well-written, well-acted show would choose to leave when one never knows where the next acting opportunity will show up. Any info from my friends on the other side of the pond?

Because the kid who plays Timothy Turner has 666 embedded on his scalp.

Some info on the latest departures, but no real info on why the cast keeps abandoning ship.

Jessica Raine - didn't want to be typecast as the goody two shoes. Unfortunately that role is thankless because it's so vanilla.

Pam Ferris - she had some health problems and didn't want to continue

Miranda Hart - the gossip is that she had a falling out with the producers

Bryony Hannah - I have no scoop on her, but the shit they wrote for her, I'd leave too. She's another of the goody two shoes with vanilla writing. Let's face it, out of the original books Trixie and Chummy are the only interesting nurses.

Ben Caplan - victim of Chummy leaving. If they continued his character, then everyone would have to be asking "How's Chummy today?" and the producers want viewers to forget Chummy.

Emerald Fennell and Kate Raine (Lamb?) - also the victims of poor writing. The lesbian storyline didn't work (and was not part of the original books).

As you may already know, Barbara and the dishy Vicar are not returning for the full 2018 season. They will show up in a few episodes at the end. Nobody is talking about why this is, but I think it's to do with something with Charlotte Ritchie. If it were just the vicar, they could write him away on a missionary trip. But Ritichie is one of the main midwives, so if she doesn't appear, neither can the vicar.

Jessica Raine - she left because she didn't want to be typecast as the goody two shoes. Her writing was very vanilla. From the original books, the only midwives with any interesting personality were Trixie and Chummy.

Pam Ferris - she had some physical issues and decided to leave the show. She never said what physical issues she had.

Miranda Hart - gossip on the street was that she had a run-in with the producers.

Bryony Hannah - I think she left for the same reason as Raine. Her material was so vanilla. No growth in character.

Ben Caplan - His character was phased out because producers didn't want any reminder of Chummy. And what could they do with him? Everytime a character saw him, they would have to say, "How is Chummy? Where is she? How's the baby?"

Emerald Fennell and Kate Raine (Lamb?) - the lesbian storyline didn't work. It didn't go over well with fraus. They were victims of the political correctness of the writers.

Also, you may already know that Barbara and the dishy vicar are not doing the full 2018 season. They will show up in a few of the later episodes. I think this is due to Charlotte Ritchie because she is a main focus midwife. If the vicar had other plans, they could just send him on a missionary journey. But Ritchie is integral to the cast. And she's not saying why she's not doing the full season.

The actor who plays Doctor Turner is married to the show's creator and writer, Heidi Thomas. Expect to see more of the trials of the Doctor and Shelagh.

Emerald Fennell wanted to write and had several projects going on, including writing for a tv show she and a friend did (I think). Plus she comes from money, her 18th birthday party was featured in Tatler so she isn‘t working because she needs the money.

So Emerald wanted to do other stuff, mainly writing, and because Call the Midwife didn‘t see any reason therefore to keep Kate Lamb (who played Delia, the other half od the lezzie couple). From Kates twitter it sounds like she didn‘t want to leave and that she was upset over ih.

But it‘s weird that in the Christmas special none of the recent absences were mentioned

Once Nurse Jenny left, the show turned to shit.

[quote]Once Nurse Jenny left, the show turned to shit.

After Season 2, they had exhausted the original source material in the book. So starting with Season 3, they had to make up their own material.

I never knew there were actual reasons for people leaving and had always assumed that the turnover was intentional to keep fresh storylines incoming. It was also realistic that young nurses would move on, get married, etc.

Anyway, the actor who plays Trixie just had a baby with the actor who plays the vicar. Guess they were a real life couple too.

UK TV shows don't give cast members multi-season (series) contracts, so if they are offered other roles before the production begins on the next series they are free to take up any other work they are offered. Sometimes it means that they are not available to film.

by Anonymousreply 11January 5, 2018 6:21 PM

For a show with such a big ensemble cast it's not uncommon for actors to leave the show after a few series. Plus the actresses will want new challenges and get offers of work as a result of the exposure.

Jessica Raine had worked consistently in the theatre before Midwife and has worked consistently since, notably series 2 in Line of Duty and Inside Number 9.

"Call the Midwife" and "Eastenders." What the fuck is the appeal in either?

Clearly it's a Brit thing.

Jessica Raine in Line Of Duty gave me one of the biggest ‘Holy Fuck’ moments ever. No spoilers.
