John Phillips did receive an appointment to the Naval Academy; however he washed out during his plebe year and transferred to Hampden Sydney College in Virginia(he also dropped out of HSC.) Your second proposition is very simple to debunk. Yes it is true that Jim Morrison, Stephen Stills and other "hippie" musicians had military fathers. Guess what? During the mid/late 40s, LOTS of college aged men received commissions to become officers in the Marines, Navy and Army. My own father was a junior at Duke, but when he received his draft notice they sent him to The Naval Academy to receive his commission and he graduated as an ensign. After the war, he chose not to remain in the Navy, and returned to Duke in order to get his Masters in engineering, but many of his peers did stay in the service. In those days, if you were a colonel or higher, you lived a pretty darn great life. The perks far superseded the salaries, and the retirement was excellent. You and your family lived your life as a king and queen on your little fiefdom of the base, along with drivers, housemen and lovely homes---all part of the compensation. So it hardly equals a conspiracy that so many "hippies" had high military ranking fathers.
