The Most Ridiculous Thing About "Big Bang Theory"

I love the show, but that damn elevator bit is ridiculous! As if the state of California (of all states) would allow a multi story apartment building with an elevator to leave the lift in an non operational state for 10 years? The state would have fined the owners of that building into oblivion and at some point would have shut the building down if they had refused to repair that left.

by Anonymousreply 95July 17, 2020 3:22 PM

It is not funny. Tried watching it.

by Anonymousreply 1December 29, 2017 11:19 PM

I dont like the way these series have led lighting on every single shelf and object in the background. Everything is lit to the nines.

Wanna bet?

by Anonymousreply 3December 29, 2017 11:52 PM

you do know that's a "plot device" right? it sets up the one liners on the different stair levels. that's like complaining about the cell phone chris evans uses in cellular.

by Anonymousreply 4December 30, 2017 12:05 AM

Oh please. So much ridiculous with that show. Scientists having to be roommates? What, do they make minimum wage or something? Howard's annoying unseen mother? Gee, what a novel idea - a character on a TV show heard, but never seen! And Sheldon? He's obnoxious, bitchy, and there isn't a person in the free world who wouldn't beat the shit out of him within 5 minutes. Godawful

by Anonymousreply 5December 30, 2017 12:11 AM

Who wants to beat the shit out of R5 in 30 seconds or less?

by Anonymousreply 6December 30, 2017 12:23 AM

Audiences are attracted to the bright lighting, the colorful costumes, and the quirky set decor and props.

Friends is the same.

by Anonymousreply 7December 30, 2017 12:30 AM

As much as we're supposed to root for Leonard and Penny to be together it doesn't ring true. While she might date Leonard as a novelty there's no way they'd last. She just doesn't have the intellect for them to be a long-term match. She would realistically end up with someone much more good-looking and with average smarts.

The other girlfriends are a much more realistic match for the characters.

by Anonymousreply 8December 30, 2017 12:32 AM

I watched a few episodes in syndication but called it quits because of the blonde with glasses’ annoying squeaky voice.

by Anonymousreply 9December 30, 2017 12:38 AM

Jim P. just pushes his food around in the opening couch scenes.

by Anonymousreply 10December 30, 2017 12:48 AM

This show blows. Galecki should show his big floppy dick. Ditch Sheldon. Keep Penny, dump the other girls. Why do scientists live in a dump? I know 2 in Cali who live in mansions in the Mrs. Dump this series and Superior donuts. Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 11December 30, 2017 1:38 AM

I think R7's comment says it all, really.

by Anonymousreply 12December 30, 2017 1:47 AM

After all these years, it's wearing thin.

I want to know where most of the cast can go from BBT? By now they're effectively typecast.

by Anonymousreply 13December 30, 2017 12:01 PM

Galeki plays the same sort he played on Roseanne, so he'll do more of that.

Katy plays the same sort she played on Rules for Dating my Daughter, so more of that for her.

Sheldon will go back to Broadway.

We might not see Howard, Raj, or Bernadette again.

by Anonymousreply 14December 30, 2017 12:15 PM

Howard’s mother is Dead.

by Anonymousreply 15December 30, 2017 12:25 PM

And Stuart? Or Amy? Or Dr. Hawking?

by Anonymousreply 16December 30, 2017 12:26 PM

Dr. Hawking's options are limited, since he refuses to do nudity.

by Anonymousreply 17December 30, 2017 12:30 PM

They’re filthy rich. Who cares if they never work again?

by Anonymousreply 18December 30, 2017 12:31 PM

Mayim Bialik a.k.a. Amy, Blossom; she must have big connections.

Penny is there to have someone sexy looking. But matched up with Leonard?

Let Sheldon be admittedly gay.

by Anonymousreply 19December 30, 2017 12:41 PM

Could Penny really afford to live in that nice of an apartment working as a waitress in the Cheesecake factory. I know waitresses in high end restaurants (like the one on It's A Living) can make a truckload, but at the Cheesecake Factory?

by Anonymousreply 20December 30, 2017 12:49 PM

Penny living in that apartment is nothing compared to Marlo Thomas wearing couture in That Girl.

by Anonymousreply 21December 30, 2017 12:58 PM

R8 you don't understand how straight men work. They don't choose their partners based on brains and companionship. Among het couples you get a lot of them with men who are Nobel-Prize-of-Physics level intelligence matched with suburban frumpy wife but very few times the other way round. It's uncanny, I've never been able to understand it.

by Anonymousreply 22December 30, 2017 1:06 PM

They lost me when the characters started breeding.

by Anonymousreply 23December 30, 2017 1:28 PM

I actually think Jim Parsons is very talented. He gave a fine performance in HBO’s adaptation of “The Normal Heart” and has also done good work on Broadway, so I figure he shouldn’t have too much of a problem moving beyond this show.

I didn’t see the movie but didn’t some predict that the guy who plays Howard was going to get a supporting actor nomination at last year’s Oscars for “Florence Foster Jenkins”?

by Anonymousreply 24December 30, 2017 1:30 PM

[quote]Could Penny really afford to live in that nice of an apartment working as a waitress in the Cheesecake factory.

She turned tricks on the side.

by Anonymousreply 25December 30, 2017 1:38 PM

[quote]Marlo Thomas wearing couture in That Girl

Yeah but she wore them and returned them. And her Daddy paid her rent.

by Anonymousreply 26December 30, 2017 1:42 PM

I've seen this show a few times when visiting my godparents. I had to tell them that working with people who are really like that is neither funny nor cute.

They're a real pain in the ass.

by Anonymousreply 27December 30, 2017 1:46 PM

Imagine Stuart would be a fantastic tumble in the sack.

by Anonymousreply 28December 30, 2017 2:42 PM

Duhhhhhh R4, noooooooo, you don't mean it! Surely you jest.

by Anonymousreply 29December 30, 2017 2:48 PM

I really like Jim Parsons. He seems smart, funny, and down-to-earth. At least from talk show appearances.

It would be nice if he, as an openly gay actor who can do comedy and drama, would have a nice long career in showbiz. But if not, he can sob into his millions along with his handsome husband.

by Anonymousreply 30December 30, 2017 6:21 PM

Penny. She'd bore the piss out of someone like Sheldon in 3 seconds. I know she's a plot device, but I cannot connect her with the 'hot girls' nerds go for. If they made her a gamer, or even a bit more nerdy, I'd see it. That actress really scored with that gig, and for more than just the character being unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 31December 30, 2017 6:24 PM

Penny is definitely the most ridiculous character on the show. She's not pretty enough for someone like Leonard to put up with. She's an admitted whore who has a very average face. Leonard could get an intelligent woman with equivalent looks.

by Anonymousreply 32December 30, 2017 6:57 PM

You all are thinking too much and being too picky. Its a formulaic 3-story 21 minute sitcom. Its efficiently done almost every episode, funny and occasionally well-written and the ensemble cast is comfort food to most viewers. This is why its so popular. Friends was the same and made every cast member multi-millionaires as Big Bang has done as well.

by Anonymousreply 33December 30, 2017 8:21 PM

I can actually buy into Sheldon and Amy as a couple. The actors make it work. Same with Howard and Bernadette. However, the Penny/Leonard pairing never has convinced me. There isn't a scintilla of chemistry between them. They don't even seem to be able to stand each other, let alone love each other. The weak link is Kaley C. - there is simply no "there" there. Galecki's not much better. But I love all the other characters/actors, and still enjoy the show.

by Anonymousreply 34December 30, 2017 8:25 PM

To me the biggest fail is The Cheescake Factory. If they are going to use an actual brand, shouldn't the set and the uniforms reflect that brand? I have never understood that.

Did you know that the character is called "Penny" because she is something you would pick up off the street?

by Anonymousreply 35December 30, 2017 8:31 PM

Scientists are poor. Unless the work for BigPharma or BigTech.

by Anonymousreply 36December 30, 2017 9:57 PM

R36, yes, that is the joke that Penny now makes more than Leonard because she works for a pharmacy company.

by Anonymousreply 37December 30, 2017 10:07 PM

Has Parsons' character ever appeared in any other costume other than a long-sleeved undershirt over-layered with a ridiculous T-shirt?

by Anonymousreply 38December 31, 2017 12:28 AM

This is the only flaw you can find in the show?????

by Anonymousreply 39December 31, 2017 12:31 AM

Speaking of the ugly costumes, do the characters ever acknowledge that they’re in their 40s? Or are we supposed to think that they’re twenty-something?

by Anonymousreply 40December 31, 2017 12:34 AM

[quote] I had to tell them that working with people who are really like that is neither funny nor cute.

But that's the joke, Sheldon doesn't work with anyone. He had to hire Raj because he couldn't keep any assistant and Raj only worked with him to stay here.

by Anonymousreply 41December 31, 2017 1:00 AM

[quote]Leonard could get an intelligent woman with equivalent looks.

But he did, he had at least two, one Leslie Winkle (Sara Gilbert) who was the only smart one to successfully stand up to Sheldon's nonsense (both his mother and sister were able to), and a doctor played by Sara Rue.

by Anonymousreply 42December 31, 2017 1:06 AM

[quote]Scientists are poor

Hardly, they are not rich but they are not poor by any means and can afford their own place.

by Anonymousreply 43December 31, 2017 1:07 AM

I hated this show the first few times I tried to watch it. Then one summer when there was nothing on I started watching TBBT in syndication. I got hooked and have loved it since. I do find the new episodes aren't as good as the first few seasons but I still enjoy the characters.

University professors don't make great coin. They are very poorly paid for individuals with Ph. Ds. I can understand the need for a roommate.

The elevator has been a running gag and should have been fixed by now. Still, in reality those types of things do happen and tenants go without.

I loved Howard's mother and the scenes she performed in while never being seen. While it's not an original concept (MTM,) it is fun and enjoyable. Sadly the actress who vocalized his mother died from breast cancer.

by Anonymousreply 44December 31, 2017 1:40 AM

A little trivia on Howard's mother many people don't know. If you watched Seinfeld and remember the episode when George was trying to get an extension on his unemployment compensation he had to meet with this ballbuster woman at the Unemployment office. She wasn't having any of it until George saw a picture of this homely girl on the woman's desk. Turned out that was her daughter and she was desperate to find her a husband. George started schmoozing the woman about her beautiful daughter and the woman thought maybe she'd found someone to take the girl out, so she approved George's extension. George went out on a date with the fugly and when he drove her home she leaned in, mouth agape, for a kiss goodbye. George was revolted.

That girl was the actress who played Howard's mother.

howard i also want to beat the shit out of but he can be funny and good.

i loved it when i 1st started watching it, then it became annoying. it was fun for a while.

i noticed no comments about raj....... but i must admit sheldon kills me most of the time.....

[quote]University professors don't make great coin. They are very poorly paid for individuals with Ph. Ds. I can understand the need for a roommate.

That is total bullshit, you make it sound like they are working at Starbucks. These guys could easily afford to live in nice apartments by themselves. As another poster said, they aren't rich but they're far from poor, especially those in the STEM fields.

by Anonymousreply 49December 31, 2017 6:08 AM

[quote]The elevator has been a running gag and should have been fixed by now. Still, in reality those types of things do happen and tenants go without.

What happens is it keeps getting fixed and breaking down again. You just assume it was never fixed. You don't see the character on the toilet but they do go to the bathroom. You just don't see it.

by Anonymousreply 50December 31, 2017 6:10 AM

A professor at Caltech makes about 180K.

by Anonymousreply 51December 31, 2017 6:28 AM

Leonard and the others aren’t professors, they’re research scientists.

by Anonymousreply 52December 31, 2017 6:32 AM

Research scientists make less. Unless they are stars.

R19 - She's a member of the Hollywood tribe. As is Simon Helberg.

Another TV show that just has to give us Jewish characters, because that's all those writers know.

by Anonymousreply 54December 31, 2017 6:40 AM

R54, I am pretty sure Amy is not Jewish. The actress is, but not the character.

by Anonymousreply 57December 31, 2017 11:34 AM

No hot looking dick.

One attractive puss.

by Anonymousreply 58December 31, 2017 12:12 PM

Kunal is attractive on talk shows. I think they pad him on BBT or maybe he has a tendency to pork out. He is married to a former Miss India. Sometimes gives decent bulge.

I ask because I floored when visiting Australia and saw Aborigines with naturally blond hair.

Penny and Leonard had an episode where they were beginning to feel old. Howard and Bernie have become parents.

I think they are all already signed to this season and next season. They need to wrap the whole thing up.

by Anonymousreply 61December 31, 2017 12:48 PM

You apparently have never even watched the show, so sit yo ass down boy.

by Anonymousreply 62December 31, 2017 12:48 PM

I can't believe the focus on the stupid elevator. Since 1951, the Ricardos have been living in an apartment without a bathroom and it hasn't stopped "I Love Lucy" from being funny.

by Anonymousreply 63December 31, 2017 12:54 PM

Kunal Nayyar, in the couple scenes he's done in nothing but tighty whiteys shows he's got a nice thick piece o' meat. But little Johhny Galecki has repeatedly shown he's sporting a whopper.

OP, the whole thing is ridiculous because it's a sitcom. There is no one thing "most ridiculous" about it. I thought it was funny for the first 4-6 years. It made me laugh. So think what you will. But as with all sitcoms, that's about as far as they can go without becoming shrill and tired. BBT fell off a cliff after season 6 - maybe they changed the writers or had nowhere to go but I had to stop watching because it was painfully unfunny. I felt the same about Will & Grace after Season 4, All in the Family after Season 5 and so on.

Strangely enough, as ridiculous as I think W&G still is, I think the time off and even the self-referential jokes (as in not pretending that it's not a sitcom) are landing better than they did at the end of the show.

If you think too hard about a sitcom, you're taking it too seriously. Laugh or don't, or just don't watch.

by Anonymousreply 68December 31, 2017 1:27 PM

I can't stand the Raj character, it's incredibly annoying.

by Anonymousreply 69December 31, 2017 1:31 PM

Raj's character was kind of touching at the beginning. He was completely inept sexually.

They have certainly teased homo subtext in the bro bonding, so its a pity they never had some "experiments" by any of the characters. Unless I missed that.

by Anonymousreply 70December 31, 2017 1:43 PM

I think they are saving the elevator for the final episode when they are moving out of the building for whatever reason and the maintenance man takes down the "out of order" sign and says that it's fixed.

by Anonymousreply 71December 31, 2017 1:44 PM

The show was cute but its pretty clear the actors are phoning it in these days. Put a fork in it.

by Anonymousreply 72December 31, 2017 1:52 PM

[quote]I think they are saving the elevator for the final episode when they are moving out of the building for whatever reason and the maintenance man takes down the "out of order" sign and says that it's fixed.

Or that the very last shot of the series focuses on the elevator doors as they open up to show it was working all along.

*ding*

by Anonymousreply 73December 31, 2017 2:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 75December 31, 2017 2:32 PM

I used to love BBT, but after Season 5 it just started getting stale. To me, comedy is rooted in dysfunction of some sort, and with BBT, the dysfunction was the guys were nerds and owned their "nerdity." Then they started getting girlfriends, wives, now children and there's no longer any dysfunction. Raj can now speak to women without being wasted, the other three are married/paired off, Penny stopped dating losers like Zach, Mrs. Wolowitz is dead and all the other quirks that made the show interesting are no longer there. The only thing left is the stupid elevator and I simply can't believe that tenants in an upper echelon high rise apartment building wouldn't be seriously upset about an elevator that's been broken for 10+ years.

by Anonymousreply 76December 31, 2017 2:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 87January 1, 2018 5:22 AM

I love this show still. And I love all the characters, except Sheldon. I'm sad to say that if I had to suffer Sheldon in real life it would end poorly. Quite frankly, I believe the Sheldon character, as played, is on the spectrum. Possibly a savant of some sort, but clearly suffering from some extreme form of personality disorder, surely. Sadly I've known a couple of Sheldons, thank God outside of my own circle of friends. They were both friends of friends. The few times we came into each others presence by accident I always had to make a hasty exit for fear of losing my cool with them. One actually made it inside my home once, long ago, with the mutual friend. I had to take my friend aside before they left to tell him to make sure he NEVER brought that person there again. I simply haven't the patience to deal with people who have no sense of decorum and no self editing feature.

by Anonymousreply 88January 1, 2018 10:34 AM

Sheldon is on the spectrum?! Quite frankly, that is your insight?
