Oscar Nomination Predictions in Variety
I broke down and saw Call Me By Your Name yesterday. It was boring as fuck and nearly hollow to the core. I don’t get why it has fifty threads on DL.
Does the Academy have that many members pining for a twiggy teenage boy?
Blade Runner 2049 also moved like molasses, but it was the best film that I saw all year. I’d nominate Harrison Ford for Best Supporting Actor over Armie Hammer a hundred times over.

Never forget all the years they took the bait from Harvey Scissorhands.

Theres 50 threads for that movie because some pedo troll is obsessed with it.

I've not been to the cinema in years because the fare Hollywood churns out is CRAP!
Really. Hollywood is shite.

It would be nice if Rachel Weitz got some recognition.

Call Me by Your Name doesn’t deserve any nominations.
Lois Smith deserves at least one, maybe two. I would be happy to see her win Best Actress for Marjorie Prime and Best Supporting Actress for Lady Bird.

Are they ever going to nominate Andy Serkis for anything?
He was entertaining in The Last Jedi, but I would put him up for War for the Planet of the Apes.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 29, 2017 3:52 PM

Andy Serkis would be a controversial pick, but a good one. I think other actors would feel a bit put off by someone whose performance is tied so tightly to CGI.
I wonder at some point soon if there will be a special awards category for “actors” who are completely generated by a computer, like “Peter Cushing” in The Force Awakens. I think the award would go to the creators of the image. At least I hope so.

FIlm, gaming, and augmented reality will probably collapse into one another at some point, changing a new generation’s entire perspective on the medium/media.

Glad Mary J is getting in. It's a revelatory performance on level with Diana Ross in Lady Sings the Blues.
Shame that Carrie Fisher couldn't snag a Supporting Actress nomination for Last Jedi.

^ I know a lot of us loved seeing Carrie Fisher in the movie, but it was more sentiment on our end than the performance on hers.
The audience I was in laughed when she was flying through space like a slow-mo Superman.

R13, Mary J. Blige does nothing distinguishable in Mudbound. I’ve been somewhat baffled that she had been cited throughout the season for that performance. It’s perfectly fine and serviceable, but I think she is getting mentions because of the novelty of her acting. To mention that performance in the same breath as Diana Ross in Lady Sings the Blues is absolutely ridiculous.
I think Blige will ultimately be replaced by Octavia Spencer at the Oscars or a dark horse candidate from Get Out (Allison Williams or Catherine Keener with a Betty Gabriel spoiler).

The same could be said about Allison Janney, who's been doing a variation of the same character for several years now on television. I've no idea why people are acting like that performance is so groundbreaking. It's not.
And Allison Williams?! You've GOT to be kidding me.
Mary. Allison, and Laurie are getting in. The other two are up for grabs. Mary might even get a Best nomination too.

I thought Allison Williams played a rather effective villain in Get Out. And I am not really a fan of hers.

The most risible of these predictions are for best supporting actress. Mudbound needed to be in one hundred theaters even to be eligible.

Blige and Washington? 10% of the nominations for 12% of the population. Looks like will get it right this year.

I haven't seen I, Tonya but I really don't understand how a movie based on a true story that looks campy as hell is getting more mentions than Battle of the Sexes, another movie based on a true story. Emma Stone should be nominated for Best Actress over Margot Robbie. I realize she won last year but her performance in Battle of the Sexes was excellent, and the movie itself was also really good.

I have read that Steve Carell would be the dark horse nom for Battle of the Sexes.

Do the new allegations against James Franco guarantee a shutout for it?
Does the pay scandal with Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams mean a sure nomination for her?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 12, 2018 4:17 PM

Christopher Plummer may get a nom just for erasing Kevin Spacey.
Michelle Williams may get one for being a team player and getting financially fucked in return.
I haven’t seen the film, but I would like to see both of them get nominated. They are worlds more talented than Mark Wahlberg. He should just stick to Transformers shit that is calibrated to his level of talent.

97% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes disagree with you R33. I, personally, loved Call Me By You Name.

I think the really fun coup would be for Metcalf to win the Oscar after losing everything else to Janney
Stay tuned

Because of the timing, Franco still has a chance for a nomination.
It seems if he showed up at the ceremony, he’d cause an uproar, though.

If the Academy has any sense of self-preservation, they'll nominate Wonder Woman, along with Patty Jenkins. Otherwise, the telecast will see record low ratings again, and the Oscar will continue its decline into irrelevancy. Few people have seen the other potential nominees. Take out that thing called "The Florida Project" and put WW where she ought to be.

R39 There's also the problem of Casey Affleck presenting Best Actress this year. Word is they're not inviting him to present. They're gonna have Kirk Douglas do it.

Just saw CMBYN last night, and LOVED it! It was a full house on a Saturday night with an audience full of gays, lesbians, and straight women. The acting and musical score was superb, i especially loved the last scene with the father. And, Armie Hammer is a Dreamboat!

In this year of white trash, Margot Robbie will be runner-up to Frances McDormand.

Ronan should be taking it home for Lady Bird, but I think McDormand will win too.

I think McDormand’s Golden Globes speech really helped her in the race. Besides that, she gives a great, full-throated performance. The character is unlikable, but you’re kind of roped into rooting for her because the entire town seems to be coming for her.

No one is paying for publicists to post on DL, which has about 100 readers.
Some people just like CMYBN, and want to discuss it.
I don’t understand how anyone is interested in Golden Girl’s, but I’m not going to bitch at those who are. I simply ignore threads which I’m not interested in.
You might try it.

I haven't yet seen CMBYN. Usually it's the type of movie I'd love, but from what I've seen and read it does seem creepy and molesty. A couple friends who saw it told me not to bother. It seems really odd that, in this period of meToo and all the sexual allegations coming out, this movie would be so popular.
Could a fan of the movie explain that to me, (and please in a respectable manner if you want to try and win me over). Ditto for those who feel as R53 feels. Thanks.
