Although there are a lot of hotties today, there was a smoldering sexiness in some of yesteryear's biggest stars. Guy Madison, for instance - a beauty that transcends time.
What other classic stars made you horny when they appeared on screen?

George O'Brien (here with Janet Gaynor in 1927's "Sunrise") was sexy as hell.

All of them (except Mickey Rooney.)

This shot of John Payne is still one of the sexiest I've ever seen.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 26, 2017 1:43 PM |
Old movies were total artifice so you would think the men would seem more feminized or calculated. But no.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 26, 2017 1:43 PM |
The John Payne shot is unforgettable and incomparable.
I'm shocked Vanity Fair has yet to try and recreate it with some flavor of the month.

Guy Madison was truly preternaturally beautiful. No one looked better in Navy blues than he.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 26, 2017 3:46 PM |
The truth was a lot of those men were from hard male backgrounds. They’d fought in wars and been in the forces. They were often picked by studios because of their looks, but had a genuine uneffected quality about themselves too. Brando clearly wasn’t vain. Notice how he never battled the weight gain and grew to the size of a house.
Most Male actors today are playing at everything. They like to make out they are super masculine, but they would all have been dancing around in the Glee clubs at High School.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 26, 2017 3:54 PM |
Every time I look at Robert Mitchum, I think of sex.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 26, 2017 3:58 PM |
For me, the sexiness is less tied to vanity, which I find ultimately unmasculine and so calculated that it subtracts from any primal appeal, which in my case, supersedes everything else.
Look at Mitchum and his body. No trainer. Probably not much in the way of a gym. But he exudes sexuality from the way he moves and from even the look in his eyes.
I compare this to the contemporary actors who make me hot, highest on the list being Jon Bernthal, who forces me to sit through all of the violence of The Punisher just to see him swagger around on the screen. But even he has the predictable gym body required for a leading role like this.
Mitchum is just manly bulk and sexual energy.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 26, 2017 4:08 PM |
I also came here to post Mitchum! The epitome of masculine.

[quote] For me, the sexiness is less tied to vanity, which I find ultimately unmasculine and so calculated that it subtracts from any primal appeal, which in my case, supersedes everything else.
Yes to all of this. Gym bodies are vain and almost prissy. I watched "Hell In the Pacific" a few weeks ago and both Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune had shirtless scenes. I marvelled that these were two of the biggest tough-guy action stars of their day, yet would be laughed out of a gym and/or DL today for not looking like 'roided up clones. And yet, you knew that these guys were actually strong as hell and could kick the asses of 10 IG gym hos without breaking a sweat.
(And yes, both of them are infinitely sexier than all of the Ryans, Zacs, and Bland Chrises in Hollywood today.)
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 26, 2017 4:17 PM |
Even the character actor/villain types who weren't expected to be mega-masculine were sexier then. Witness Basil Rathbone or Conrad Veidt vs. Cumberbatch or Hiddleston.

Many male stars used to look like MEN. They were tall and broad and solid. They looked like they could chop wood and change a tire. (Some of the pictures are of men (especially the short ones), not MEN, just men.) I’m not saying they looked like they were a brute, but they were masculine while so many men are not. For example, James Garner was all MAN. And, he was supposed to be a great person and was a liberal. My kind of MAN.

If anyone is really interested in the Golden Age stars, I'd recommend a book of George Hurrell's photos. He was a genius and produced all those beautiful black and white photos and could make the relatively plain Jimmy Stewart and ugly James Cagney look elegant and handsome.

Guy Madison's cameo appearance in Since You Went Away was not unlike Robert Wagner's in With a Song in My Heart.
Brief but unforgettable. A star is born!
by Anonymous | reply 93 | December 27, 2017 12:01 AM |
R92 and R93 - the story behind Guy Madison's appearance in that film is interesting. Gay agent Henry Willson (who was responsible for the careers of Rock Hudson, Farley Granger, Robert Wagner, and other hunks of the day) spotted Guy Madison in the audience of a theater. Guy was on leave during WWII. Henry was so struck by him that he put him in that small role, then Guy went back to serve out his military duty.
When the movie came out, the studio received thousands of letters asking who the handsome soldier in that bowling alley scene was. So Henry Willson contacted Guy, and when his tour of duty was up, Guy came to Hollywood and a movie star was born.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | December 27, 2017 12:54 AM |

R98 His acting was awful in that, but given the fact that he hadn't an ounce of acting experience and had never been in front of a camera before, it's understandable. Fortunately, he got better over time.

It's interesting because all of these Golden Age photos are hot as hell and seem to speak to a difference in sexiness - less vain, less forced, more naturally masculine, more mature. Yet, as someone upthread said, the creation of stars and movies involved a great deal of artifice even back then.

by Anonymous | reply 123 | December 27, 2017 9:51 AM |
Op - there were truckloads of amazing looking, sexy leading men in the Golden Age of Hollywood - no denying it!
There was less plastic surgery then as well - so you were usually seeing the authentic, natural product (other than a lot of false teeth! Dentures were a lot more prevalent!).
But the downside was that they didn’t last as long. Hot young physiques turned into dad bods relatively quickly. And with the smoking, drinking and time spent in the sun - skin was damaged prematurely. Take a look at leads like Robert Taylor and Tyrone Power when they were in their mid twenties. By mid-late thirties - their looks really began to slide. Ditto Errol Flynn.
There’s still plenty of very handsome guys around in movies today. And lotsa sexy ones too. BUT there’s also a lot of youth worship and infantilising of pretty young things. So you get someone like Ryan Phillipe or Zac Efron. They look like pretty, non threatening teenage boys - even as they end up in their mid/late thirties and beyond.
There’s an anecdote about William Holden. He was really a hot young guy. But didn’t get many good roles or chances when young. When he bemoaned this, one of the directors told him he was too pretty and wouldn’t get better parts until his face got older and developed some character.
Completely different paradigm now. Smooth and line free is the goal. It’s just a different time and aesthetic.

Aldo Ray talked about his time on the casting couch when he first arrived in Hollywood.
He knew when a certain producer/director summoned Aldo to his private office what was expected of him. As soon as he entered the office he would lock the door behind him and stand there as he lowered his pants as the P/D advanced towards him on his knees. Aldo said he would think of other things as he was being serviced until the cum ran down the guy's throat. I remember seeing a publicity pic of a very young Katherine Hepburn with an equally young Joel Mcrea - sitting beside a pool or at the beach or something. The studio must’ve teamed them up as athletic, bright young stars...
He was gorgeous. A decade later - middle aged looking. Nice still - but definitely older than his years

Lawerence Tierney was both handsome and sexy as hell. He was probably the most fucked up actor ever to be given a role. He was a fan favorite and consistently boiling right under becoming an A lister. It just got to the point the studios couldn't hide his behavior and he just couldn't be hired because of how fucked up he was. He was a very good actor too. He was a true psychopath and it comes through on his stills.

Guy Madison’s beauty would probably make him a bigger star today than he was then. He’d be an Avenger or some kind of superhero. He looks so handsome, he’s almost a walking cartoon.
Lex Barker molested Lana Turner’s daughter, Cheryl Crane, the same one who later stabbed horse-hung Johnny Stompanato to death.
Cheryl Crane’s book, Detour, is one of the best Hollywood biographies I have ever read.

A Total Babe in that movie. Especially the scene where he and Jean Arthur are walking down the street, talking. Watch what he's doing and her reactions.
McCrea was a native Californian and supposedly before he went in the movies, he was a kid who hung out at the beach. Many of the daughters of the studio heads thought he was to die for.

Lawrence Tierney on one of his nights out. He was such a good actor that when he returned to Hollywood for his comeback as an older actor he was welcomed back with open arms. He was still kind of the same but since he was older he was kind of limited on the damage he could do. He has an impressive list of credits as a newcomer then as an older actor. Rory Calhoun has a lot of rough stories too. He was an actual inmate for a while.

by Anonymous | reply 204 | December 28, 2017 2:44 AM |
I agree that there plenty of actors/stars today who you could do up in Golden Age attire and grooming (get them out of the juvenile clothes and youth-obsessed grooming) and shoot them in black and white and they'd look just as hot or nearly so. The big difference would be the gym bodies.
Also agree that there was a less vain, less forced, more natural masculinity and idea of attractiveness.
And, finally, I agree that while there were a lot of stunning Golden Age men, it often didn't last long. That's not to say that stars today look great forever, but many prevent the dad bod for a longer time. But, if you think about it, do they? There are plenty of "WTF happened?" cases even today.

Grit cable TV has been showing mini-marathons of "Laramie" for the holidays. Wall to wall VPL's and high tight asses from the two stars , John Smith and Robert Fuller. One of the shows I watched earlier had the two of them fooling around and trying out different Japanese style takedowns and flippings in one of the bedrooms. John Smith was half nekkid and Fuller's shirt was open showing off his magnificent hairy chest as they grappled with one another. Highly Brokebackerish. I was riveted to the screen.
The same episode introduced us to the little boy who joined the cast with Spring Byington coming on board during the next episode.
Maybe TPTB decided two strapping gorgeous hunks living way out in the country all alone was just a little too Brokeback and brought in the cook/little boy to break that up.
by Anonymous | reply 206 | December 28, 2017 3:15 AM |
“Laramie” was truly the original “Brokeback Mountain”. John Smith and Robert Fuller were both drop dead gorgeous. John’s long bow legs were sexy as fuck, as were his lips and that tiny scar on his left cheek. He was also one of Henry Wilsson’s clients. Wilsson foolishly made him adopt the bland stage name when his real name, Robert Errol Van Orden, was much more interesting. John married twice, the second union being a very short one, and never had kids despite some sources online saying he had a daughter. His first wife, the actress Luana Patten, said one of the reasons they divorced was that he often disappeared for days on end without explanation. He later said that if he could’ve changed anything about his life, he would’ve stayed single. I often wonder if he was slipping away so frequently for a little “male companionship.”
After “Laramie” ended, he was handpicked by John Wayne to star opposite him in the film “Ciircus World”. The director reportedly disliked John so much that he vowed to ruin his career, which could be the reason his career petered off afterwards. John was also a heavy drinker, an addiction he inherited and one that led to his later-in-life health issues.

R194 you've got to be kidding that Sir Larry wasn't bisexual.
Before anything was said openly about him and Kaye Michael Korda was talking about it. And if anybody knew anything about the British acting colony it was him.
Also everybody thought Brett, Bates and Sir Alec were straight. Ha! Guinness made a fool of himself over Glenn Ford and was arrested for soliciting in a men's room. Tell that to Star Wars fans!
My only thought was what interest did Larry have in Kaye. Yuck.

I'd have thrown my hat on the bed for either of those guys (yeah, some of you will know the scene). And he was a wonderful actor, too. The acting gig holds up longer than the sex idol thing, which is why he continued to work for so long (if anyone recognizes you as an actor, which can be difficult).

r227 You might be thinking of Rock Hudson. He apparently had a very effeminate voice and Henry Willson took him to see someone who told him to wait till he had a cold and then to scream for hours or something like that. It sounds horrific but I guess it worked. I always wondered if Guy Madison did something similar as his voice on film was always unnaturally deep, like it didn't sound like it was his natural voice. That might also explain his poor acting, as he was probably focusing his attention not on the job in hand but rather on trying not to sound like Liberace.

This is Ken Clark. He played Stewpot in the film of South Pacific. He spent most of his career in B pictures and Italian sword-and-sandal peplums along with some TV work. But he also posed as an "undraped" model for art school students and did some physique photography, as seen here. I've looked in vain for any full frontal shots.

Chuck Connors, "The Rifleman" first became well known in Hollywood for a gay porn loop he made when he first arrived in LA. The "plot" is a sailor standing in front of some bushes cruises cruises a marine. Then they go back into the bushes and fuck the shit out of each other.
Like the alleged Monroe and Crawford (among others) pornos there is (or used to be) much debate about it's authenticity. I saw it. It's very, very obviously Connors. Dates from the late 1940s.
Connors had been a college athlete, primarily a college baseball player. There is a nude photo alleged to be of him after he entered the pro minor leagues. It's obviously not him but sometimes presented as proof it's not him in the porn loop.
It's him.
Meanwhile, here's the cover of a "Rifleman" comic magazine presented without comment. Click to view in full.

That Chuck Connors porn loop is totally convincing. The only things that would make me believe it’s not him are the hands (Chuck had long, bony, oddly shaped fingers and the man in the loop doesn’t) and the guy doesn’t seem as tall as CC. Other than that, the face is totally Chuck.
by Anonymous | reply 365 | December 31, 2017 2:52 AM |
R365 I definitely think it's Chuck, and not wishful-thinking-wise. It's the face - Chuck Connor's face was very distinctive, and the guy in the loop looks exactly like him. As far as the fingers, Chuck's could have become misshapen with age (arthritis), but as a young guy, they may have been perfectly fine.

Wallace Reid was one of the first, if not the first, American male film sex symbols. Impossibly gorgeous. Unfortunately he became addicted to morphine after recovering from an onset accident and eventually died of an overdose despite having entered rehab. Some sources say he was the original Arrow Collar Man as depicted by J.C. Leyendecker but other sources don't acknowledge this.
Typical but not first Arrow Collar Man. Oh, Daddy:

Francis X. Bushman and Ramon Navarro in the original silent version of Ben Hur for r380. Navarro was famously murdered by street hustler brothers he picked up decades later, although the Valentino-gifted dildo story is mostly untrue.
Bushman was indeed a fabulous hunk and one of the greatest stage matinee idols of his day. I have seen much more revealing photos of him but they don't show up on Google. He was a favorite of legendary early silent director D.W. Griffith.

They had to wear lots of mascara back in those days because lighting was so primitive.

I knew someone many years who claimed he tricked for Navarro. This was in the early 80s and the guy was in his 30s so if he was a teenage hustler it works out.
Said he was a sweetheart, knew the hustlers who killed him and they were scum and I asked him if Navarro and Rudolf had been lovers and he said yes.

R405 Have you ever read the book "Full Service," by Scotty Bowers? It's pretty poorly written, and I'm not sure all the stories he tells in it are true, but he talks about all the hot WWII servicemen coming to California after the war and hanging out on Hollywood Boulevard, hoping to be discovered.
Rock Hudson would apparently stand in front of his truck in front of the Paramount studio gates all day on his days off from his job, hoping someone studio bigwig would notice him. When Henry Willson did notice, Willson asked him, "What do you wanna be?" Hudson said, "I wanna be a movie star." Willson said he signed him for that very reason. Had Hudson said he wanted to be an "actor," Willson would've passed.

Gardner McKay was a male model who had signed with MGM when Dominick Dunne spotted him and suggested him for his new tv series, Adventures in Paradise. The show ran for several seasons from 1959-1962. Marilyn Monroe handpicked him to play "Adam" to her "Eve," her fellow South Pacific island castaway in Something's Got to Give. This would've been hilarious since his Adventure in Paradise character, Adam Troy, sailed his schooner through the South Pacific. But, alas, Gardner declined and the movie was never completed.
Here's McKay with '50s supermodel Suzy Parker by Richard Avedon:

Ray Danton and wife Julie Adams were the B-movie glamour couple on the Universal lot. Despite both landing lead roles in major pictures during their lengthy careers, neither broke through to the A-list like fellow Universal players Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh.
by Anonymous | reply 476 | December 31, 2017 10:01 PM |
Ray Danton was unquestionably hot but his look and demeanor always came off a little too "gangster greasy" to afford him leading man status in the America of the 1950s. He might have had better success had he started out in the 1970s under the directorial guidance of Scorsese and Coppola.
by Anonymous | reply 477 | December 31, 2017 10:33 PM |
It was probably the roles he played because in Majority of One and having no knowledge of him beforehand in no way does he come off like that.
He's really very good in it despite his devastatingly good looks being a bit of a distraction.

Victor Mature in his Coast Guard barracks during WWII. No, it's real, not shopped. It's been around for decades. I first saw it back in the 1970s.

R487 I bet Anthony Perkins got passed around to a lot of casting couches during his young, twink stage.
by Anonymous | reply 492 | January 1, 2018 5:48 PM |
Liz was a well known size queen so I can believe her having a fling with Victor Mature. People who were puzzled by her relationships with Larry Fortensky and that short Mexican guy, among others, just didn't get it: SIZEMEAT.
by Anonymous | reply 493 | January 1, 2018 5:59 PM |
Anthony Perkins was a handsome and ambitious young actor who landed some A-plus roles in Hollywood pictures and on the Broadway stage. His dad Osgood being an established and respected stage and screen actor may have gotten his foot in the door. The casting couch may have sealed the deal.

I suppose Victor Mature's large genitals got him employment the corrupt world of Hollywood because I have always considers him to be as unnattractive as Sylvester Stallone. With the same incompetent acting skill as Stallone.

Victor Mature was a favorite fling of Esther Williams and she goes into detail about him in her bio Million Dollar Mermaid. The film they made together was also called Million Dollar Mermaid, about the career of Olympic swimmer Gertrude Ederle, first woman to swim the English Channel.

In that era looks were more important, they didn't care if you were a great actor if you were big box office. Nowadays, there are more movie stars that are better actors but not as hot.
by Anonymous | reply 502 | January 1, 2018 10:03 PM |
Never too crazy about Victor Mature in his younger days....there was something just a little too bloated and sleazy about him. But he was fabulous parodying his image in a hilarious Peter Sellers 60s comedy called After the Fox.

But looking at him in those Roddy MacDowell home movies, he seems so mean and paranoid. Very creepy nasty vibe, unfortunately.

I just posted about watching the documentary with Christopher Isherwoods now old, formerly very young lover. He spoke about their friend Perkins and said it was TRAGIC he was going to daily psychotherapy to not be gay and they (openly gay couple with scandalous age difference) just found it cowardly and sad. Remember, Isherwood was politicized in Weimar Germany with the arrival of the Nazis and their stamping out the liberal society that had bloomed. Its clear they had no patience or respect for the closet in Hollywood USofA.

IIRC, gossipy straight actor Frank Langella wrote about encountering Tony Perkins backstage after a performance and he asked Frank point blank how big his dick was. Tony then proceeded to invite him to an unnamed actor's tent for an orgy. Frank stopped short of saying whether he accepted the invitation.

Mature is indeed a terrible actor and I don't find his looks at all attractive even with that dick.
Million Dollar Mermaid except for one eye-popping Busby Berkeley number, the one with the swings and smoke, is a total snooze.
And even the no nonsense Ederle didn't like it. The ending though is creepy for those who like horrible accidents.
But as said by another poster Mature is wonderful sending himself up in the very funny After the Fox the Peter Sellers/Neil Simon/Vittorio de Sica spoof of pretentious European art films of the 60s.

R505, you are one sick misinformed fuck. Leslie Howard Steiner was born in London. His father was Hungarian, and Jewish, and had emigrated to Great Britain. Howard's mother was British and Christian. Her paternal grandfather had emigrated from Prussia to the Great Britain sixty years before Leslie's birth. He married a British woman, assimilated, and raised six children in the Church of England.
Howard's mother was not Jewish, not culturally or by Jewish law, and so neither was Howard.
I'll say a prayer for Muriel to block your sorry ass from this place.

The one piece bathing suit for women and channel surfing.

R530 Kellerman made about 6 silent movies in the South Pacific. She wasn't pretty. She appeared in NY music halls in the 20s. She had a long retirement and briefly had a health food shop somewhere near the beach at LA in the 40s[?].
Most of her 6 movies are lost. I saw a 15 minute except but it's all very primitive with miming underwater.

If you've seen pictures of Manners working shirtless at his dessert home I'd say he was still pretty damn sexy for today.
He also looked great modeling those two piece bathing suits men used to wear. Or were they one piece which also covered the top?
In the wonderful pacifist early talkie The Last Flight he is one of the most handsome men I've seen in a movie.

The OP is asking about "Movie Stars of Hollywood's Golden Age".... not 1960s TV stars, but even those were sexier than the movie stars of today.
It was all about the jaw-line. You just don't see those square jaws and dimpled chins today. Big thick necks. The men exuded testosterone.
Look at someone like Ryan Gosling. In the past he would have been a character actor playing the dumb hayseed. An Edward Everett Horton type...not a leading man.
