I was talking to a friend of mine who doesnt remember Hope &Faith- not that I blame him but still. Does anyone remember this sitcom with Kelly Ripa and Faith Ford?

I remember this from grade school. And odd, half-animated program that I watched because, well, the cartoons. Now, I've realized it's based on James Thurber and the New Yorker set: My World and Welcome to It.

I sure do, OP.
I also remember a CBS show from the '90s, with Paul Sorvino, Ellen Burstyn, I think, and Kevin Dillon but I can't remember its name.

by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 24, 2017 2:20 PM |
Did Faith Ford ever work after that? If not, too bad, she was not a bad comedic actress. That might have been Ted M's last regular job as well.
The premise of the show was not bad, but Kelly played her character so broadly. Which surprised me a little, because while her AMC character was annoying, I did not think she was that bad of an actress, but she really needed to be reigned in on this show.
The one episode that was funny is when she returned to her soap roots, but that was largely due to Susan Flannery and Susan Lucci showing better sitcom chops than Ripa and the two working well together. I don't remember any other episode (although I don't think I saw that many).

R20 When I say Big 3 networks, I'm referring to a time when there was no cable tv networks or internet, so a really popular show was watched by almost everyone back then.

Do shows that aired before you were born count here?
I added a classic TV channel onto my Roku and discovered a bunch of really obscure shows. There are the shows from the 50's that everyone knows, just from being a certain age, from watching TV Land, MeTV, etc, like I Love Lucy, the Honeymooners. This channel dug deep and it astounded me how much programming there seemed to be available back then.
I had no idea that Betty Hutton had a sitcom (produced by Desilu), Eve Arden had a self-titled show where she was a writer with twin daughters, Betty White had several shows, For the men: Red Buttons, Jimmy Durante, Buddy Hackett and Eddie Fisher are just a few 50's celebs that had shows. There are countless westerns, game shows and revue shows and shows headlined by people I've never heard of (Dennis Day, Dennis O'Keefe). There are various shows sponsored by big businesses - Campbell Soup had a show that put on one-act plays - I saw one with James Dean.
This channel is gonna keep me busy for a while.

TLC's "Furniture to Go"! is coming back!
I loved watching Ed Feldman and Joe L'Erario every weekend back in the '90s. In addition to excellently refurbishing furniture (I learned how to upholster chairs because of their shows), their classic films parodies were hilarious.
Every once is a while they'd also parody fund-raising infomercials ala Feed the Children, Seagulls, Stray Dogs, etc. My all-time favorite of their fund-raising infomercial parodies was Sally Struthers' Christian Children Fund. Ed (then pushing 300 lbs.) wore a curly blond woman's wig, bright red lipstick, still in his full beard, asking viewers to order varying paraphernalia to support the fund. His intro was, "I'm Sally Struthers from 'All in the Family'; but that was before I looked like a Manatee. His closing was, "Order now. I'm hungry!"

If it turns up there, R25, you might enjoy "The Goldbergs." It was one of the first programs (starting in 1950, I believe) to move from radio to TV. For years and years, Gertrude Berg both wrote every episode and starred as Molly Goldberg. The style of humour is cozy and gentle, rather than LOL funny, but the topics were surprisingly prescient for the early 50s.
The YouTube link is the trailer for a documentary about the series. The complete documentary ("Yoo Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg," about 90 minutes) is also on YouTube.

Murphy Brown was one of the most popular and critically praised shows of the 80s. It was everywhere in syndication for a short period, but seems to have completely disappeared.
Yet the highly superior show it emulated, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, is still shown and often discussed. I guess MB didn't age well. (and shocking that Candice Bergen won more Emmys than MTM for respective show).

Hi R31 - thanks for the rec. I did see The Goldbergs while exploring the classic channel. I only watched about 1 minute, only because there was no much other content to discover. I will go back and watch an episode.
I was surprised to see a show called Beulah, with a black actress as the lead; didn't know that POC had their own shows back then - I thought that Dianne Carroll was the first black female to star in her own show. I was hesitant about Beulah - I know the show is about a maid and I didn't want to see a POC in a subservient role and/or Uncle Tom-ing. I hung in for 5 minutes and it was a little cringe-y, but the positive part was that the family treated her pretty nicely.

R4 the show was That's Life. It starred Heather Paige Kent; she gave up acting soon after that and later became one of the Real Housewives. She was actually a very charismatic actress.

R1 I get the feeling many picks to come in this thread will be long-lost ABC titles.
One of my favorites was 2004’s COMPLETE SAVAGES. Yeah, ok, it was sexist garbage (exec-produced by Mel Gibson, no less) but it was written by Julie Thacker (then, late of THE SIMPSONS) to be funny & dirty as all hell even by the standards of TGIF (the horny elder cousin to the Disney channel).
Among its cast were a college-aged Erik von Detten & Shaun Sipos playing a gorgeous stupid jock & a scheming fuckboy respectively, plus hot daddy Keith Carradine as the boys’ beleaguered Patriarch. The references & the costumes have dated horribly even in just 15 years, but the gags are still fresh and the concept still works. The episode ‘My Two Sons’ has a sharp Tran s joke you couldn’t get away with now.
It was the final new show to air on TGIF before the block was discontinued by ABC in September 2005. COMPLETE SAVAGES will never by syndicated as it only had 17 episodes, just like two dozen other TGIF sitcoms (the older Erik von Detten sitcom ODD MAN OUT springs to mind...).

R25 What's the name of the Roku channel with the old series? I might enjoy seeing some of those shows. Thanks.
I see that one of the old channels (like Antenna or MeTV) is going to bring back "Murphy Brown" in 2018 -- so we'll see if it holds up or if it is dated. I really liked it when it was on -- especially Miles Silverberg (Grant Shaud) who I'm surprised seems to have disappeared since that show. Also Jay Thomas, who died this year, was terrific on his guest spots and was made into more of a semi-regular on one point.

At one time there were religious anthology dramas. I can't remember the names but my cousin, a TV expert, mentioned one as a Catholic Twighlight Zone.
I remember another one of those shows had a story about a skinny nerdy teacher who was friends with the beefy he-man coach. The students thought the teacher was gay and harassed him to the point of saying he was in love with the coach, including an elaborate act of vandalism with strands of toilet paper and a sign saying "Mr Barnes loves the coach."
The coach then has a little talk with him and it turned the coach was the gay one. I don't remember how it ended.

R10- OMG! I remember Strange Paradise - that was like the Canadian version of Dark Shadows.
I'm surprised "Search" never lasted - originally it was called "Probe"- because it starred Hugh O'Brien. It had a sci-fi premise but it never caught on.
Also "Kaz" was a great show that didn't last - Ron Leibman got an Emmy for it but then it was cancelled. Linda Carlson was a pretty solid actress but I never saw her in anything after that.

R38 Murphy Brown has disappeared due to the greed of Motown. They released the first season on DVD, but it didn't sell well enough to pay for the music rights to release the remaining episodes on DVD, and it isn't on streaming services for the same reason. They can't just replace the music because of the tendency to have Murphy sing the songs.

2009’s KINGS from NBC should have been a barnstormer but got buried by flimsy promo & weak scheduling, rendering it a forgotten cult hit. Somehow NBC went wrong with a high-concept, epic version of THE MONARCHS featuring such lights as Brian Cox, Ian McShane, Eamonn Walker, and the divine Susanna Thompson as the bloodthirsty Queen Rose (!) Benjamin. It had everything you’d want in a drama and more.
It’s a surprise KINGS was’t bigger with gay audiences or the DL even if it didn’t take with civilians, being as it featured the talents of heartthrob Chris Egan in the lead role as the future King David. with Bway stalwart Michael Arden & lesbian-icon Leslie Bibb in supporting roles. The pilot featured a devastating coming-out scene from a gay Prince character played by Sebastian Stan, which looked a little a too real and hit very close to home.

Ummm, Just Shoot Me ran for 6 seasons and was clearly a large enough hit to have lasted that long back when NBC actually had some Must See TV.

The sad thing about "Just Shoot Me" was that it had clearly been conceived as a vehicle for Laura San Giacomo, who was outshone by pretty much everybody else in the main cast.
The one that is truly forgotten by now is "Ned and Stacey", with Thomas Haden Church and the DL favorite Deb Messing.

BLADE: THE SERIES followed in the continuity of the Blade films and surpassed all of them in originality & appeal. The series was short-lived, airing June to September 2006 for just 12 episodes, but what Blade fans got to see was a treat. Unlike other ‘continuation series’ this one tied up every loose end from the movies in smart unexpected ways, even retconning & fixing that ‘Day Star’ issue from BLADE III..
To replace Wesley Snipes, Kirk Jones aka rapper Sticky Fingaz stepped in and brought attitude, swagger & energy the Blade role. The series notably opened on a curb stomp brawl between Blade....and a vampire with a fireaxe. We get Blade’s entire backstory in this series, exploring his gang-past (the Bad Bloods) and even meeting his father..
The series topically & controversially followed a female Ir aq veteran named Krista as she tried to eke out a living after discharge and subsequently learned about the gory vampire Underworld her brother was involved in (and eventually killed by), which Blade is trying to bring down.
There was also a subplot with an AIDS-subtext concerning the ‘Aurora Project’, supposed to be a cure for inherent vampire weaknesses like photosensitivity. In fact, the ‘cure’ is bogus and the villainous vampire CEO who created it is selling it to fund his own project, to design a virus to infect & kill ‘pureblood’ (i.e full) vampires.
It ended early and on a cliffhanger, unbelievably. It was so fresh & so cool, surely deserving more than half a season.

The first season is a bit shakey but after that, it really is wonderful. But the second season changed the format from half-hour to hour, and rejiggered the cast.
It was shot in a soundstage that in now the big theater at La Mama, and a lot of locations around the city, but especially downtown.
The scripts are strong, the acting is great. Even the relationships are more recognizably real than most film and TV of that era.

R282 THE SURREAL LIFE was one of the only truly funny ‘celebrity’ reality shows.
It’s been 16 years and I’m still chuckling about the Vince Neil/Corey Feldman feud, and Feldman getting fake-married on the show to his Playboy girlfriend with the nuptials officiated by MC Hammer.
Trivia: SNL alum Bill Hader was one of the MTV production assistants on this show.

[quote]"Millennium." I always preferred it to "The X-Files" being far more sinister, better acted, and less puerile.
It was more sinister anyway. The show was utterly nonsensical. It made the X Files seem tightly structured by comparison.
I really wanted to like Millenium. I like sinister as well but the show couldn’t really commit to that and ended up being Kmart sinister. Commercial TV doesn’t really allow you to go all the way.
Lance Henriksen can be very good in the right role and this one was perfect for him, but the storytelling was too chaotic so I stopped watching after the first season.

The Joe Schmo Show - aired on the Spike cable network and featured a reality game show which was known to be fake to everyone except the lead. The challenges, characters and interactions were so crazy but "Joe" bought into it, believing it was all real and making for good television. One of the other "contestants" was a pre-SNL Kristen Wig.

[quote]R38 Murphy Brown has disappeared due to the greed of Motown. They released the first season on DVD, but it didn't sell well enough to pay for the music rights to release the remaining episodes on DVD, and it isn't on streaming services for the same reason. They can't just replace the music because of the tendency to have Murphy sing the songs.
There is no Motown anymore to speak of. It's just an imprint of Universal Music Group trading on long-past glories.

Here Come the Brides starred Bobby Sherman, Robert Brown and David Soul as the Bolt brothers in newly settled Seattle, which featured Joan Blondell in the "Miss Kitty" type role, Bridget Hanley and also Mark Lenard as the heavy. R407 I’m still not over a then-19 year old Nikki Cox banging then marrying Bobcat Goldthwaite of all people on the UNHAPPILY shoot. Before that she was bearding for that little creep Kevin Connolly.
To put the cap on the nasty misogyny, they kept repeating pushing aside the Mom character (meant to be the protagonist) and killing her off repeatedly a la Kenny on SOUTH PARK, to instead focus on the schizo Dad character and his chilling fixation on his teen daughter’s body/sexlife.
Justin Berfield was on that show, poor kid.

I remember when Nikki was on Vegas a few years later, there were already signs that she was getting bad, unnecessary plastic surgery at a young. Her face had some joker like qualities by the time that show ended. Too bad, because she was attractive and probably could have had a little better of a career.
Unhappily had more of a meanness and nastiness that made them much more unlikable than the Bundy's that there were copying. I vaguely remember them killing the Mother off and having her haunt them as a ghost in the second season.

Hope and Faith was created by Joanna Johnson (Caroline on Bold and Beautiful) who now executive produces and co-created the Fosters. She got the idea from a friend of hers who was from Ohio who worked in Soaps then left LA to live in his mom's basement after a career crash mixed with her own experiences of leaving a soap. It was part of the ABC friday night line up of sit coms and did quite well.

Rags to Riches was my favorite show. Sadly the series finale (the series hadn't yet been officially cancelled) was rudely interrupted by the live broadcast of baby Jessica's rescue from her deplorable family well. I was devastated for decades that the show was prematurely cancelled let alone I never got to see the proper ending! Fast forward like 25-26 years later I'm having drinks at my friends bar chatting it up with a sexy bearded man next to me. Our bartender friend brought up but subject of the baby Jessica well debacle and sexy beard guy chimed in about how this occurred during the show about singing orphans his sister made him watch. I shrieked Rags to Riches! We couldn't believe either of us would meet another soul who remembered this short lived show- let alone was haunted by the fact that baby Jessica ruined it forever. Clearly I took him home and Fucked him. Immediately after he left I ordered the 1.5 season series DVD off Amazon and finally watched that finale which was never aired.

Greatest American Hero is on one of the vintage antenna channels. William Katt was a likable actor - he should have had a better career. I know they needed an antagonist, but Culp was really annoying on that show.
I forgot (appropriately) about Yes Dear. That was one set of unlikable (and not funny) characters.
I caught a few episodes of Scarecrow and Mrs. King a few years ago. The pilot was actually not bad. Jackson and Boxlietner had good chemistry and were very watchable, but beyond the pilot, the writing for the show was pretty weak.

R499, it's funny you wrote this given that William Katt was rumored to be a huge asshole, which, if true, may be why he did not have much of a career beyond GAH and one or two of those Perry Mason movies. That said, I agree he was likeable onscreen and kind of cute.

R509 Because it had very disturbing (realistic) Holocaust scenes in several episodes. One episodes is a train travelling from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz with two main characters in it arrival at Auschwitz, selection and a horrible scene how people were undressed and forced into a gas chamber and also a scene inside the gas chamber. I saw this as a child in prime time. I remembered the episode for decades until I re-watched the series recently thinking ABC might not show it today, but maybe it should.

Mike Nesmith had this comedy variety series that ran for a really short time in the mid 80s that I think was the network's attempt to capture the MTV audience. It didn't run for very long but was full of talent that would break out separately soon after like Jerry Seinfeld, a little like the Ben Stiller show in the 90s:

R442 post about The Cape reminded me of the short lived mid eighties series Call to Glory about an Air Force family at Edwards AFB (but shot in Texas) during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I grew up in an Air Force family and a couple of my dad's friends were consultants on the show.
Craig T Nelson starred, along with a young Elizabeth Shue as the daughter they were setting up to become a 60s rebel, but it got canceled due to the cost of the production, though It got great reviews and may have led to Top Gun getting produced. My main impression from the trailer was how unrealistically long the men's hair was, and the women's too, now that I think of it, it would have been crewcuts and Jackie O beehives back then and really, up until the era the series was produced in. Even in the 70s, I still had to get a haircut every 2 weeks and spent my youth getting called Cousin Buzz by my shaggy haired classmates.

There have been a few shows set during wars which have been forgotten. China Beach and Tour of Duty are a couple of examples. Both shows were rerun in cable for awhile in the mid 90s and I don't have have ever aired again on cable or syndication.
