I spent my childhood reading Archie (mainly for Betty and Veronica), and my interpretation of Archie Andrews always was that he is a perpetually distracted, always-horny underachieving all-American average teen boy with good intentions who has a big heart but often makes the wrong decisions. Casting an Abercrombie and Fitch poster “fuckboy” with no personality is antithetical to the whole notion of Archie Andrews. That was really more like the Reggie Mantle character. Jughead is fairly close to the comic character, although he really was as close to asexual as any teen boy ever has been. The series absolutely nailed both Betty and Veronica’s characterizations even in spite of Betty’s insanity/witch family and making Veronica a Hispanic organized crime heiress.

Archie's casting might be antithetical to the comic, but it's dead-on accurate for the CW.

I was in high school in the early 2000s and there were girls who were dating older guys. Most of their parents had no issue with it, but there were a couple of girls whose parents did press statutory rape charges. One girl was being raised by her grandparents. She was secretly dating a 21 year old and the grandparents called the police and had him arrested. Another girl's father also had her 20 something boyfriend arrested. The father pulled her out of school and sent her to school in another town.

A 16-17 year old girl with a 21-23 year old man (and I use the words girl and man here intentionally) is the very straining of what I consider socially acceptable, and I'd automatically keep a wary eye on all other natures of the relationship. At the best interpretation, the younger participant is with the social maturity of a later teen and the older participant is still living something of a later teen/around 20 life. At the worst, its just another older man grooming a (maturing) young woman to get their virginity, pump and dump and potentially mess her up psychologically. Add in that he's arguably in a position of influence - regardless of her awareness about that - and its at minimum pretty sketchy. 'Age is Just a Number' except numbers are typically our tool to indicate real things. Its even worse if he was like 20-21 at the start, involved with a 15-16 year old, as the rumors went. NOT monstrous, not pedophilic or anything like that, but definitely problematic enough that he should have been careful about it (or to even do it), and at least technically criminal in regions. Why do we permit late-teens to early-twenties people be involved with high schoolers in various cases? Mainly because we understand that this age range is still really damn childish in a lot of respects. Yes a 23 year old 'dating' a 14 year old is disgusting as hell (responses ranging from 'hang them' to actually legal in some places), but a 19ish year old with someone in the middle to late high school (15, 16, 17) is grey enough to get a headshake and moving on, unless there's signs of abuse or you have a vendetta against them.

Clara Berry is 26 and that is completely age-appropriate for him. There's a lot of guys - you may have known some - who would go for girls younger than them more primarily due to being secretly intimidated by *women* their age (thus the late 10s-early 20s opting for more innocent high schoolers), but most grow out of that in their twenties, or try to, until they sometimes fail in their middle-age and go for the 'pure' youngest women they can find because they don't really know how to be a man that relates to women on the same level. Yes there's other factors but we should never disregard the element of male immaturity. Even with gay men too - just with the acknowledgement that our age gaps happen more from the pool being smaller than a particular predation (though that happens too; we are men).
