I'm gonna say Star Wars, let's be honest the majority of the movies haven't been that great
What's The Most Overrated Movie Franchise?

Star Wars

Gary Kurtz was part of the reason the first two [italic]Star Wars[/italic] were as good as they were; somehow he managed to keep Lucas's worst impulses in check. [italic]Return of the Jedi[/italic] served its purpose, but the prequel trilogy was crap then and now. If they'd stopped with the first trilogy they might be as revered as [italic]The Godfather[/italic] trilogy.

Whoever wrote the dialogue for the prequels should be murdered

The "Pitch Perfect" franchise. Someone posted a thread, "Do we really need a Pitch Perfect 3?" -- we didn't need a Pitch Perfect 1.

Return of the Jedi was awful and one of the reasons why I refused to watch any of these new films
The first two were escapist fun but nothing earth shattering
It's amazing that they keep making these things

Star Wars.
James Bond is second.

The first Star Wars was good. Shit followed.

Murder She Wrote.

The one with Kurt Russell as Dexter.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 17, 2017 6:55 AM |
Any of the Avengers films. If it wasn't for the hottiies Sebastian Stan and Paul Rudd, I would've never watched any of the MCU films
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 17, 2017 8:01 AM |
R10: At least there were only three of those and Kurt wears a wrestling onesie in the last one.
[itaic]Air Bud[/italic] is the most pointless Disney franchise.

The new SW has been getting great critical reviews, but terrible audience reviews. Sounds like some payola's been going on.

Anything with a comic book theme. I’m so sick of seeing billions wasted on these manchild pieces of crap instead of worthwhile entertainment. America is really at a low point right now.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 17, 2017 3:00 PM |
[italic]Wonder Woman[/italic] was not a bad movie by any means, but some of the worst of those comic book movies are just awful. It's like this is the post-literacy generation almost.

Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
Yes. I said it. Nothing but fighting and endless CGI.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 17, 2017 6:21 PM |
Madea.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 17, 2017 7:29 PM |
All the above (and below).
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 17, 2017 7:57 PM |
Yes, the entire Dexter Riley series is considered one the greatest film franchises ever.

Few franchises are really "rated highly" by most critics. Many are rightfully appreciated for being enjoyable and well constructed.

Pirates of the Caribbean. Johnny Depp's Keith Richards-in-drag persona got old about 1 scene in.

Harry Potter

Hunger Games.

How has nobody said Tranformers? I would say Star Wars is the most overrated because the former doesn’t rate at all.
And X-Men is the most underrated. Back when it came out, the final scene in X2 felt like a gay rights statement. All the mutants were in the Oval Office, telling the Bush stand-in, We’re here and we can fuck your shit up if we need to, so stop fucking with us.

New Star Wars: get woke, go broke!

You lost me at franchise.

[quote]New Star Wars: get woke, go broke!
On the contrary. Introduce the same ratio of female and minority characters that there's always been to a new generation; watch them lose their shit ranting about #whitegenocide, SJWs and Cultural Marxism; mass downvote IPs at Rotten Tomatoes and the IMDB; and post loads of racist and misogynistic screeds online. Then cackle in glee, "Get woke, go broke!" when the reality is that the franchise is getting stale and people lost interest when Disney took over.

Star Wars, absolutely, but I'm glad it funded this:
Also, maybe the stories made some people better people (morally) than they would have been otherwise. Trying to do what's right, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 30, 2018 2:00 PM |
James Bond. Yes, I went there. It's a mediocre franchise that was only successful due to slick marketing, crass commercialism and wish fulfillment.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 30, 2018 2:01 PM |
Any franchise that pisses all over its own original source material, then goes back and alters it, or creates a bunch of revisionist bullshit to cover it up or explain it away, in a pandering attempt for bigger and bigger box offices, deserves to be on the list.
Star Wars, POTC, and Star Trek sit at the top. Alien showed potential to have been great before they whored it right out of the gate to James Cameron and Stan Winston. They altered the original concept so badly that the legacy was pure shit by the third installment .
A trio of specially especially sharp and pointy-looking awards up the asses of Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Andy Serkis for doing the same to Planet of the Apes.

R28 Star Wars began to suck long, long before it became just another Disney property. Between 1983 to 1987 or so, the writing was already on the wall. It's just that devoted fans like me didn't want to see it. Many of them still don't.

[quote]And X-Men is the most underrated.
No, it's rated exactly where it needs to be. The movies were probably one of the most soulless adaptations I've ever seen onscreen, just nothing but a series of glossy, slick, pretty images. I would sooner watch the badly animated FOX Kids series than watch any one of those movies again; at least those had heart and you really got a feel for the characters.
Another problem with that franchise is that the X-Men was an ensemble of a large number of great, fun, interesting characters (Gambit, Storm, Nightcrawler, Beast, etc.). The movies decided to diminish their roles and turn the franchise into the Wolverine Show because Hollywood just can't get over this hang up that you have to have an alpha white male (beefy, angry Rambo type) be the center of every movie.

Lord of the Rings

Fast & Furious. Possibly even worse than Transformers.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | August 30, 2018 5:26 PM |
r25 X-Men movies are heavily criticized by most fans precisely because of the immense social commentary they can provide (the comics were that) but the movies rarely if ever make them a focal point.
A netflix or HBO type Mutant series, done well, would absolutely be an amazing box office and awards success precisely because it is as timely now as it was when the comics were created.
