Is it because of the money they make? When will Alex Rodriquez come out?

DOnt play dumb. Why do most same-sex oriented people on the planet remain closeted? Because homosexuality is one of the most highly stigmatized, oppressed, and persecuted things among humanity on the planet. Even in the Western World, gays are still subject to discrimination, family rejection, isolation, and physical attacks, even murder. For male athletes, the oppression is even worse because gay men are especially viewed as unmanly and unathletic, and there is widespread belief that gay athletes would be divisive and unpopular among teams and fans.

What are multi-million dollar endorsement deals?
I'll take In The Closet for $200, please

Ronaldo coming out, he's a worldwide brand, would cost him millions in lost revenue in the Asian market alone; they really don't like the gays over there.

Star hockey player Sidney Crosby appears to be gay. Born in Canada but lives in Pittsburgh to be near his hockey team. Nice guy but quite closeted. I guess he doesn't want all the controversy and attention attached to being a gay, top athlete.

r9........As if he, or any member of his family for the next few generations will suffer financially at this point. Hes worth hundreds of million of dollars. Thats like saying Oprah will starve if she never works again.

I love A-Rod. He’s got the finest ass.

Endorsements are a small reason. After all, legions of common athletes who will never have major endorsements never will come out, from high school to college to professional to retirement. The biggest reason is Shame, denial, and the prevalent view gay men are not manly.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 17, 2017 9:04 PM |
Athletes don’t want to be associated with girly or faggy guys.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 17, 2017 9:05 PM |
Of course it's about money, especially if you're someone like Ronaldo who is a world wide brand, except the U.S. Obviously he has many homophobic fans in shit hole countries.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 17, 2017 9:08 PM |
Its only about partly money for the biggest athletes who have endorsements, unless you mean fear of being fired or kicked off the team

Ronaldo is rich as Croesus. If he doesn't come out, assuming he's gay, it's not because of money.

r21 Have you seen him, he obviously cares about money and appearance, someone like him won't do anything to affect the gravy train

by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 20, 2017 12:20 PM |
But the reason celebrities stay closeted and we are still stigmatize and oppressed in the public eye is Because more big name people, as,well as the Everyday man, do not Come Out more often... If people really saw how prevalent we were in society, it would ,over time, become no big deal...

I follow golf and I’ve heard gay rumors about Martin Kaymer and Jose Maria Olazabal.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 20, 2017 12:31 PM |
Until or unless male homosexuality is no longer associated with effeminancy, men will not want to be associated with it. That’s obvious,

athletes want to be idolized and remembered for their athletic superior-ness, not their wholesome existence. cristiano could singlehandedly win the intergalactic championship - he would still be "the gay one" forever and always. also: who would want a bunch of people going back examining every single detail and aspect of your life and career, searching for signs of the gay?

Team sports are about being powerful alpha males. Homosexuality is still viewed as the antithesis of this ideal.

Because while "entertainment" is full of them homos, sports are supposed to be the refuge of the insecure straight guy. Universally agreed upon exception for figure skating and gymnastics, possibly diving.

R41 I read an interesting interview with a gay athlete from Canada. I think he competes in luge. Anyway, he said he played hockey but quit. He said it's much easier being gay in an individual sport. I can imagine that's the case for many athletes. You would find fewer gays in team sports than in individual sports. Still though, the fact that there aren't ANY out gays in soccer is mind boggling. Yeah, I know how incredibly homophobic soccer can be, but considering all the hundreds of thousands playing, and the thousands playing in Premiere League or La Liga in Spain, there has to be at least a few gays. It's sad that they feel they can't come out to the public. I can't say I blame them though, there are so many white trash fans in soccer, many bigots. Sadly I think we are many, many years away from having an openly gay soccer player in one of the major leagues.
