Hi DL,
I've been lurking for a few weeks waiting to ask this.
So when I was five my mom wrote a lesbian pulp novel called Twilight Girl. She used the pen name Della Martin. It was autobiographical about herself and three friends.
One was a famous sixties radical who came out some time ago. She's pretty iconic.
Another was a prominent Beverly Hills socialite and activist who died closeted. She's not an icon but she created one. There's still a foundation associated with her name and it paints her as a semi-saint. Mom describes her as a violent junkie. She was always nice to me.
And the third was Mom's girlfriend who was a pretty major sixties TV star. A- if not A. Several shows and iconic roles. She died closeted half a century ago but she's still alive in reruns. I loved her very much. She used to bring me pastry from the BH Hotel in fancy little boxes and call me in character from her shows.
I know the whole real story and I really want to tell it, but I'm concerned about the ethics of outing even someone long dead. The family's of the latter two women would object mightily for personal and financial reasons. My family objects to my outing Mom, but she wrote a lot of lesbian novels and I know where she stood.
A lot of my childhood trauma is about my parents' closet. Do I have the right to tell it openly even if that means outing two important women of the sixties, or should I keep Mom's secrets?
PS: Dad dated John Garfield, among others.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | December 16, 2017 1:33 AM |
To @81:
Most people who are in the closet are there because they fear consequences. The people you are talking about are gone so they're not going to lose their jobs or get shunned socially.
I don't know what your vision of the afterlife is (if any) but I don't think your mom and dad or the closeted friends of theirs that you're thinking about outing are going to be screaming "OMG OMG 81 let our secret out!!!" from the other side.
Also, it occurs to me that a some famous people leave instructions that their diaries and letters can be released X number of years after they are gone. If it's been 50 years, maybe these people would want this information to be publicly known now.
The question would be what effect this is going to have on living people. Would this ruin somebody's memory of their parent or make them extremely unhappy for some other reason? And conversely would telling anyone at this point improve anyone's life? Are these people iconic or role models that would inspire some gay kid someplace to not kill himself?
So my two cents is to weigh the harm it might do against the good it might do and make your decision that way.
.

Thanks 82, 83
I've been weighing the ethics of this for years. It's a mixed bag.
The socialite is famous for peace and this would associate her with violence and radical politics. Her family wants to protect her legacy which I can kinda see.
But the TV star would be a WONDERFUL role model and LGBTQ icon. You guys already love her. (There's a thread here without a hint of her sexuality). And her best-known role would take on sweet irony if the truth was told.
My store is closing. I'll be back in the morning to read replies. Thanks for the help.

R87, Donna Reed died in 1986, hardly "half a century ago." But perhaps r81 isn't good with arithmetic, for your guess is great. It certainly would make Reed's "dance partner" (prostitute) scenes with Montgomery Clift in "From Here to Eternity" "sweet irony."

R81, anyone who is afraid of their long-gone relatives being known as a lesbian or gay is homophobic on some level. If these relatives are happy for them to be remembered in other ways then it's pretty glaring that they wouldn't want them to be remembered as lesbians.
My attitude is that once someone dies the truth about them becomes public domain, especially when it's something completely benevolent like this. Trying to keep it hidden suggests homosexuality is still a dirty secret.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | December 16, 2017 9:29 AM |
It's a generational thing, at least for some people.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | December 16, 2017 9:30 AM |
R113 still no reason. Since when did we accept the homophobic “because he looks gay”? He has never had any rumors, nobody crawling out the woodwork, no bitter exes telling tales. He’s a bit camp, that means nothing. My very straight married brother is more camp, he bounces around the kitchen singing Gloria Gaynor songs with his children.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | December 16, 2017 11:42 AM |
Hi. R81 again,
So I guess I just wanted some confirmation of where I was already going.
R88 - the violence and radical politics are only tangentially related to the outing. They're just part of the family story. Violence because my Mom was violent and she describes a lot of it in her books. I can add names. The radical politics because that's what my family was about. I was a "red-diaper baby". My grandparents were founders of the Socialist Workers Party. We were the people Joe McCarthy warned you about. ;)
I was working on a book about all this when the Weinstein story exploded and made my little scandal seem pretty minor, but it's still a good story and I am going to tell it. My mildly-homophobic elderly brothers never concerned me, but the other families involved did.
So, in case I get hit by a bus before I finish here's a DL scoop:
In the 1960 novel Twilight Girl, the character Lon is based on the author, Adela Kalousek Maritano, who wrote more than 80 novels under the names Della Martin, Kay Martin, Jane Converse, Adela Gale, Leslie Seabrook, Terry Singleton and probably several others.
The character Mavis is based on a then-teenage Angela Davis. She came out some time ago.
The socialite Sassy is based on Lorraine Schneider, founder of Another Mother for Peace and designer of the iconic "War is not Healthy for Children and other Living Things" poster. She died closeted.
And finally the character Violet with the dyed purple hair was indeed based on Bea Benaderet. Bea was the delight of my childhood and my Mom's girlfriend for many years. She was the funniest person I've ever met. It doesn't seem fair that America can't watch Petticoat Junction and see her as one happy lesbian. Congratulations [R101], you called it. Bea died on my Mom's birthday in 1968.
Thanks for the support all.
PS: Never heard a whisper about Donna Reed, but Kay Ballard was at Mom's parties sometimes.

Thanks R81/R120. It's always nice when a poster who says he knows something doesn't drag it out forever. Good luck with your book. The double-bearding that seems to have gone on is really interesting. How did your brothers end up mildly homophobic if both your parents were gay?
by Anonymous | reply 122 | December 16, 2017 11:01 PM |
[R122] My three older siblings were raised by our grandparents. My parents were closeted from them too. Brothers still won't talk about it. I was the unexpected bastard child who showed up late in their lives. They were less concerned about the closet by the time I showed up, although neither of my parents ever officially came out to me, they just knew I knew. Mom brought a girlfriend to my wedding, (along with the touring company of some ice show).

Because I don’t believe you I must be trolling r132? I have no insider knowledge here, I just stated the facts as I know them - he has never talked about being gay. He has been married twice - that’s not necessarily a pointer of being straight but he seems genuinely married. The only place I’ve ever witnessed any rumors is here and that was only wishful thinking. Being a bit camp means nothing and it is deeply homophobic to insist someone is gay because “he looks a bit gay”. You truly are a sad little man to be so desperate for a complete stranger to be gay. He may be but it seems highly unlikely.

Another vote for Hillary. She had dyke written all over her (Wellesley was then and remains now Dyke Central) and that's why she was more upset by the political ramifications of the Lewinsky scandal than the sexual humiliation most wives would have felt - ditto enabling his decades of philandering throughout their marriage. It's probably also why they only had one child.

Another vote for Hillary Clinton. She pings to high Heaven. The question is, why did Bill marry a woman in whom he could have had so little sexual interest? Is it really feasible that amongst all the women who would have shared his ambitions and plans, including ambitions and plans of her own that would have been furthered by furthering his, not one hetero female could be found?
Or perhaps that's why she was so useful: the usual conflicts of sexual loyalty would be erased from the equation, leaving the path less cluttered as long as he was discreet?
Hillary and that other close friend-dyke, Susan Thomases (whatever happened to her?) always seemed like more of a couple than Bill and Hillary.
