Why didnt Ralph Macchio have a bigger career?

He's cute, even at 60. I bet he has a nice meaty Italian cock. Plus he was so good in My Cousin Vinny.

by Anonymousreply 314February 18, 2020 5:38 AM

He probably didn’t put out.

by Anonymousreply 1November 26, 2017 1:57 AM

He’s 60?

by Anonymousreply 2November 26, 2017 1:58 AM

He's 56.

by Anonymousreply 3November 26, 2017 1:59 AM

Isn't he a dwarf?

by Anonymousreply 4November 26, 2017 2:01 AM

R4 He's 5′ 9″

by Anonymousreply 5November 26, 2017 2:05 AM

56-60-40-99... Its all the same.

by Anonymousreply 6November 26, 2017 2:06 AM

He does look pretty good for mid fifties, and I don't think he's had any surgeries done. But he does wear a toupe.

by Anonymousreply 7November 26, 2017 2:12 AM

He has always looked younger than his actual age. I remember on Eight is Enough he was playing a 14-15 year old when he was already 20.

by Anonymousreply 8November 26, 2017 2:19 AM

He was just in "The Deuce" playing a police officer. It certainly was not a big role, but he is still acting.

by Anonymousreply 9November 26, 2017 2:22 AM

Thinking he got stereotyped into playing Guido roles and could never break out. No idea what he turned down either in the hopes of launching a bigger movie career.

by Anonymousreply 10November 26, 2017 2:32 AM

Is he a top or a bottom?

by Anonymousreply 11November 26, 2017 2:35 AM

He turned down Top Gun.

by Anonymousreply 12November 26, 2017 2:38 AM

These midgets are good bottoms. Even when they're 30 if you squint just right you can convince yourself you're fucking a 16 year old.

by Anonymousreply 13November 26, 2017 2:39 AM

If I recall correctly, he had open heart surgery at a relatively young age.

by Anonymousreply 14November 26, 2017 3:11 AM

Why did he basically stop acting? I know he does small roles now and then. He's able to live in the Hamptons, on the beach

by Anonymousreply 15November 26, 2017 4:32 AM

Family money.

by Anonymousreply 16November 26, 2017 4:38 AM

Played gay in a crappy film called "Too Much Sun."

by Anonymousreply 17November 26, 2017 6:01 AM

Wig

by Anonymousreply 18November 26, 2017 6:49 AM

I read he’s doing a show soon with “(Is there a problem,) Mr Lawrence,” from Karate Kid. He has a grown son in college. One of the NHL teams in NY honoured him with a bobble head last year for being a diehard famous supporter. In interviews, and odd mentions by others, he comes off as being possibly too miserable to work with. And that’s as far back as KK and Outsider days, so maybe that set the tone for future employment.

by Anonymousreply 19November 26, 2017 7:41 AM

Where does the wig idea come from?

by Anonymousreply 20November 26, 2017 4:48 PM

During the second movie he had a gut and was fat. That killed it.

by Anonymousreply 21November 26, 2017 6:58 PM

I think he got type cast and if his acting skills were limited then he wasn't able to break out of the typecasting. It happens to a lot of child actors.

by Anonymousreply 22November 26, 2017 7:18 PM
Played gay in a crappy film called "Too Much Sun."

by Anonymousreply 25November 26, 2017 10:17 PM

Wasn't he thirty when he did the Karate Kid?

by Anonymousreply 26November 26, 2017 10:19 PM

He was 44. He’s 75 now. Always looked young for his age.

by Anonymousreply 27November 26, 2017 10:37 PM

R24, that was Danny Pintauro. No wonder he turned out so fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 28November 26, 2017 11:02 PM

"I killed a guy! I killed a guy! I killed a guy!" is Guido-speak for "Are you insinuating that I killed someone?"

by Anonymousreply 29November 26, 2017 11:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 30November 26, 2017 11:14 PM

r28 I assume you were joking.

by Anonymousreply 31November 26, 2017 11:26 PM

He’s not a shoddy actor, but a rare example of a grifty teen actor in it for the money who luckily turned out to have some shred of talent backing it up. He was arguably the only decent actor working on ‘The Outsiders’ and has given great performances in almost everything else; he’s in poor movies but his work is never what’s dragging the production down.

Maybe early success went to his head or fucked with his drive or outlook somehow?

by Anonymousreply 32November 27, 2017 12:20 AM

I hate the way Eric Stoltz no-sells that entire scene at R23, just dreadful acting. If you pause the scene at 2m10s you can see Ralph’s face briefly flashes with pure grit-teeth irritation that Stoltz gave nothing. Eric’s character isn’t supposed to react with gusto but he is supposed to react with something, at least a little in the eyes.

Macchio wasn’t giving as much as he could have, either, he’s on cruise control - and yet he still looks like Pacino next to Stoltz.

by Anonymousreply 33December 19, 2017 10:28 PM

I saw him many years ago in How to Succeed in Business: wasn't bad for a non-musical person.

by Anonymousreply 34December 19, 2017 10:31 PM

He got fat, like Ken Wahl.

by Anonymousreply 35December 20, 2017 12:16 AM

He always seemed nice, his cunt of a costar Elizabeth Shue made fun of him in an interview years ago where she basically called him a loser.

by Anonymousreply 36December 20, 2017 1:08 AM

Didn't he do a play off-Broadway a while ago at a small theatre?

by Anonymousreply 37December 20, 2017 2:43 AM

Perhaps he was considered too ethnic? Or maybe while The Karate Kid films were enormously popular, they were still modestly budgeted, and therefore wasn't proof enough that Macchio could carry a big Hollywood movie or blockbuster. However, there's something to be said for the fact that he still works to this day and is fairly well know even among a much younger demographic. I'll always have a soft spot for him having watched from a young age.

by Anonymousreply 42December 20, 2017 5:31 AM

It was on television years ago R39, I wouldn't know where to find it online.

by Anonymousreply 43December 20, 2017 5:41 AM

He got type cast as a child actor, casting directors couldn't picture him doing anything other than what he did as the Karate Kid. I also think he didn't have the acting chops to move on to other roles.

by Anonymousreply 44December 20, 2017 9:33 AM

He was completely authentic as that Daniel LaRusso character. I heard somewhere that he's a family man first. Maybe that's why he kind of faded out?

There's a recent YouTube interview with Elisabeth Shue on the Rich Eisen show throwing some serious shade at Ralph. I'm guessing they didn't get along during the filming - I wonder what exactly happened?

by Anonymousreply 45March 18, 2018 4:20 AM

Elisabeth Shue is just mad because she looked like an old, FAT whore next to Ralphie in Karate Kid!

Way too fat to play a cheerleader!!

by Anonymousreply 46March 18, 2018 4:34 AM

R45 Ralph does come across as really sweet and down to earth in interviews and public appearances. I can't imagine why she'd still hold a grudge after all these years.

by Anonymousreply 47March 18, 2018 3:25 PM

Because the only career high she got was sucking of Nic Cage in that boring ass movie..

by Anonymousreply 48March 18, 2018 3:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 50March 18, 2018 9:32 PM

Isn’t there an ancient BI somewhere in the archives about Macchio giving it up to get ‘Karate Kid’?

I do know for a fact that he stayed at John Advilsen’s apartment during a 2-week rehearsal for the film.

by Anonymousreply 51March 19, 2018 1:48 PM

He suffers from the syndrome of most child actors. Some age well but can't act their acting chops was good enough playing a child like character or a teen but can't seem to transition well into adult roles. The only actors I can think of who could successfully make that transition is leo, drew Barrymore and a few others.

by Anonymousreply 52March 19, 2018 2:00 PM

You don’t think Macchio can act, R52?

He was pretty much the only ‘lead’ in ‘80s popcorn flicks who actually could. That scene with the car in KK alone is still chill-inducing, it’s that good. Then there’s his work on Outsiders, Teachers, Distant Thunder, Last POW, Good Night to Die....the list goes on. He is also great in sitcoms, Ugly Betty comes to mind.

by Anonymousreply 53March 19, 2018 2:31 PM

R17 It’s been a decade or so since I watched TOO MUCH SUN, but I’m pretty sure Macchio’s character in it was just a conman who rented his trailer to RDJ’s character. Macchio could have been a gigolo as well, it’s hard to remember without seeing it all (from this clip it seems like he was trying to start out hustling women for extra cash). I don’t think his character was gay, though, I would have remembered that.

The main character played by Eric Idle was a gay man, so maybe you meant the film was gay-interest?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 54March 19, 2018 2:45 PM

Yeah the 80s he was playing a teen. His acting in ugly betty wasn't a stretch. If he wants to show he has range he should audition for a part in an interesting griddy indie movie. Playing against type like a serial killer character a non lovable role.

by Anonymousreply 55March 19, 2018 2:46 PM

Worst offender of what r52 describes is Molly Ringwald. Watching her act is like watching a kid in a school play.

by Anonymousreply 56March 19, 2018 3:01 PM

Griddy, R55? You mean they used too much graph paper? Or the streets were all at right angles?

by Anonymousreply 57March 19, 2018 4:24 PM

R54 Macchio’s accent is thick as passata there. He does not sound that Italian now.

Was that a put-on for the movie, or did he speak more that way as a youngster?

by Anonymousreply 58March 19, 2018 6:09 PM

His character in Too Much Sun had like a ‘sassy aggressive NJ wife’-thing going on when he’d kick meek RDJ around and tell him to find a job and get some money. You don’t hear him talk so much as yell a stream of “ey-ey-eY-EYWHADDAYADOINSTOPTHat” followed by some nasty quip about what a loser RDJ is. It must have been a very cathartic role.

It seems like Macchio was going for ‘macho asshole’ but overshot it by a mile. Or arguably he was just too pretty a femme to ever pull off machismo; even the way he stands around leering is a touch femme.

Also, Ralph’s greasy mullet in it is atrocious. It is not a look that suited him in any way.

by Anonymousreply 59March 19, 2018 8:40 PM

A couple of roles he turned down:

Mark Ratner in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. His agent wanted too much money (kind of odd that early in his career).

Marty McFly in Back to the Future. He thought the script was stupid. (I can't blame him as most scripts do in fact suck)

by Anonymousreply 60March 21, 2018 6:24 PM

"A couple of roles he turned down:

Mark Ratner in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. His agent wanted too much money (kind of odd that early in his career)."

Really? That's interesting because it must have been before he was even cast in The Outsiders. Was it going to take him away from "Eight is Enough" or something like that?

Some pop culture trivia: he's inspired a bunch of songs by artists who used to crush on him.

by Anonymousreply 63March 21, 2018 6:52 PM

He had the problem a lot of cute, boyish looking actors have... they can get away with playing teens or college age characters for a long time, but once they finally look too old for those roles, they’re too short or delicate or unmanly looking to play leading man parts. Actors like Daniel Radcliffe and Logan Lerman and Elijah Wood will have or already have the same issue.

by Anonymousreply 64March 21, 2018 7:07 PM

R62 Bat for Lashes ‘Daniel’ is such a stirring & sublime pop song, and has never had the deserved accolades. It’s one of the best dark ballads of the last 20 years.

by Anonymousreply 65March 21, 2018 7:23 PM

R63 he doesn’t come over stupid; what makes you say that?

by Anonymousreply 66March 21, 2018 8:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 67March 21, 2018 8:07 PM

He was in The Actor's Studio with Dick Van Patten in the late 50's - that's why Dick got him the role on Eight is Enough. Betty Buckley felt he was too old to play her nephew.

Wasn’t the Italian mouse that Fievel befriended in AN AMERICAN TAIL based on Ralph? If not then the likeness is uncanny, from accent down to posture & gesture. Even the hair & teeth are near-identical. The girlfriend of said mouse looks a little like Elizabeth Shue in design, as well.

AN AMERICAN TAIL was released two or three years after THE KARATE KID PART I, so the timelines would match up roughly.

Why has Ralph Macchio’s speaking voice become higher with age?

by Anonymousreply 71March 24, 2018 11:36 AM

He was probably deliberately put some bass in his voice as a younger man to deter toughs from trying to kick the shit out of him. Not only was he slight of frame and pretty in a feminine way, he also played a little character known as The Karate Kid. Anyone else in his position would probably feel the need to widen their stance.

by Anonymousreply 72March 24, 2018 8:27 PM

I like to think that he and C. Thomas Howell fucked each other silly on the set of The Outsiders.

by Anonymousreply 73March 24, 2018 8:32 PM
Anyone else in his position would probably feel the need to widen their stance.

by Anonymousreply 74March 24, 2018 8:56 PM
I like to think that he and C. Thomas Howell fucked each other silly on the set of The Outsiders.

Let’s hope not. Howell was 14 years old to Ralph’s 20 when THE OUTSIDERS was shot. What’s more, they despised one another.

by Anonymousreply 75March 24, 2018 9:03 PM

The impression I’ve got over the years is he’s got kind of a miserable mouth on him. I forget if it was Karate Kid or Outsiders, but he almost didn’t get hired because they didn’t think it was going to be worth the hassle.

His son is on the tweeter, the pic is of him and Ralph. The NY Islanders hockey team honoured him with a bobble head night about a year ago. In recognition that he’s their most diehard famous fan. In some of his earlier roles, I noticed he was wearing an Islanders jacket.

by Anonymousreply 76March 24, 2018 9:19 PM

Last year at one of the convention panels he did, Ralph answered a question about how he got Daniel LaRusso. According to Macchio the director & producer loved him for the part but had to lobby to get him hired, because the head of the studio at the time thought he was not star material and wouldn’t be able to handle the role well.

Ralph didn’t say exactly why the studio head felt this way. Maybe it was an attitude problem, or maybe Macchio just didn’t comply with some demand or meet a certain standard. RDJ & Tiger Blood were also on the table for the role up until last minute, although Macchio maintains he “was always the guy” for Daniel LaRusso.

by Anonymousreply 77March 24, 2018 9:46 PM

R73 from retrospective interviews it would seem that C. Thomas Howell was in awe of Swayze and had a kind of crush on Dillon. He likes Macchio now but by all accounts did not appreciate him or think he was anything special back in the ‘80s.

C. Thomas Howell has Avery dominating presence on that stage.

by Anonymousreply 82March 25, 2018 10:43 PM

Eternal *battered* twink, R81. In Karate Kid I, he somehow looked sultry & come-hither with a viciously scraped black eye.

Trivia: Billy Zabka accidentally clocked him in the face for real during their fight-choreo rehearsals and so Ralph was walking around during the shoot a week later with real marks on him under the makeup. The shiner was left uncovered for the sunglasses reveal) so it made it into the film. Something about that is really hot.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 83March 25, 2018 11:11 PM

I heard them talk about this at a Con; iirc Zabka mentioned that he clipped Macchio's jaw with a kick rather than his eye with a punch, R83, making the reddened area along the side of Ralph's right cheek & neck (in shadow) his real injury.

But yeah, the thought of Ralph skulking around wearing bruises another guy gave him is sexy. It's halfway to a lovebite. And they say this movie has no gay connotation....

by Anonymousreply 84March 26, 2018 9:41 PM

R88 he was a little husky for the KK sequels and for 'Vinny' but by the time he shot 'Naked in New York' in 91 he had slimmed back down to a smaller size that Eric Stoltz. His daughter was about to be born then (her birthday is in 92) so he probably had concerns about his health & career longevity in light of that.

by Anonymousreply 118April 2, 2018 8:32 PM

Didn't all the guys in The Outsiders not get along with each other?

by Anonymousreply 121April 3, 2018 1:04 AM

It was only C. Thomas Howell & Macchio that would bicker R121. In the interview Ralph did with Artie Lange (see link @R96) he mentions that up until they shot the fire scene, the two boys would have shouting matches “like teenagers do” (although Ralph was 20/21 at the time...). These fights were usually about work; Macchio found Howell’s unwillingness to rehearse and lack of acting experience/training frustrating, while “CT” (as Ralph calls him) took exception to Macchio’s occasional precious attitude in not wanting to do stunts or just hang out outside work. They seem to have become friendly in their seniority though, doing Cons together and tweeting each other more than any of the other cast do. Weird how that happens.

IIRC There’s also a note in Rob Lowe’s autobiography about the cast thinking Tammy a little strange and Swayze intimidating, but they all quite liked both.

by Anonymousreply 125April 5, 2018 2:27 PM

Can we call him a "child actor"? He started his career proper at 19 years old, on EIGHT IS ENOUGH.

by Anonymousreply 126April 5, 2018 2:31 PM

I recently rewatched [italic] Karate Kid [/italic] (now streaming free on Amazon Prime) and was struck by how young he looked for a 20ish actor. He looked far too young and boyish to be Elisabeth Shue's love interest.

I had a weird secret crush on Ralph in ‘Vinny’ R164. He was carrying a little on weight on him that was really sexy to me, and looked less like a highschooler so I felt a lot less creepy thinking he was hot.

He is really average looking and I am shocked that DL will care about an actor who does not look like a stud. When he was in those karate kid movies he was cute but as time went on he began to look weird. Boyish looks is not appealing in a middle aged man. He looks really unmasculine with pretty features. Maybe it explains why he did not have a bigger career, besides it will be tough for casting directors to cast him in a movie. He can't play a young adult anymore.

by Anonymousreply 176April 30, 2018 2:34 AM
He looks really unmasculine with pretty features. Maybe it explains why he did not have a bigger career, besides it will be tough for casting directors to cast him in a movie.

This indicts the commercial American film industry more than Macchio’s face.

by Anonymousreply 188May 8, 2018 8:42 AM
I never got "closet-case" from him ‘til now.

Hmmm R185 I caught on to that also. Maybe it’s just that he’s always sitting next to the very masculine catnip-to-women Zabka whenever we see him now, which throws Macchio’s fey qualities into sharp relief. As nice as it would be to have Ralph be Family, I think it would be hard for him to stay closeted for this long without a whisper of a rumor. If anything, Zabka is more likely to be one of us as until five month ago he was almost completely out of the public eye and free to fuck who he pleased. Both men are married IRL anyway, so if they do enjoy or have enjoyed homosex it’s on the DL and extramarital.

Rebecca Granet is right though, they do have chemistry and balance each other out; Zabka is upbeat & warmly funny where Macchio is serious & dryly sarcastic. They make each other laugh, it’s kinda cute.

I just finished my second watch of COBRA KAI and I’m convinced Macchio has a crush on Zabka, possibly one he hasn’t even noticed developing himself.

They’re using Daniel’s appreciation for Johnny’s body as an in-joke on the actual show but it’s starting to bleed into the subtext; every scene their characters are in together Ralph is either running his hands or his eyes all over Billy (and who can blame him?) This is mere observation but Macchio seems like the intensely nervy and slightly-pretentious type to internalise gay feelings and use them for “his craft”.

There’s also the fact they’ve been camping buddies since the early-mid ‘00s and used the press junket for COBRA KAI to flirt with each other. Their chemistry is awesome which makes me think they’ve fucked..

As in appeal, R202? Or as a feature in his life more generally?

by Anonymousreply 203May 29, 2018 6:31 PM

R201 I have mixed feelings about Ralph in GNTD, which I just rewatched for a review. He was about average, but I tend to expect more from him and thought more could have been done here either by him or for him.

He is watchable enough in this role and looks youthfully gorgeous for 41. He shows as ever the hypnotising presence that made him a star in the first place; he's one of those actors who draws the eye on camera no matter what he's doing. I love the guy and I wanted to love him in this, but in all honesty he just could not nail the patter or the motivation for this character. Maybe LI is too hard an accent to totally shake? Or the part was too thin and caricature-ish? It was a farfetched and chaotic film with none of the focused character-work of his big studio pictures, so him getting lost in the shuffle is I suppose forgivable. Lainie Kazan and Seymour Cassel stamp all over him in their shared scenes, and he doesn't seem convincing threatening to kill the former.

Luckily Sheedy is better and at least gives energy to her part, which brings his performance up. I too believed them as long-time lovers, although not as deranged hitman & wife or as incestual; isn't it implied in the movie that they just act as siblings as a kink and a gimmick? They couldn't pass as related anyway, given their coloring. Their creepy-couple behaviour really works the best when deep in the saccharine silliness of it, like when Sheedy was biting/kissing his ear and ruffling his locks (were they still real in this movie?) while they drove. Perhaps had that featured more in the script they could have locked down their characters better (they only get about 10-12 minutes of screentime shot over a couple days, in fairness). You're right that they do have a sweet, believable and comfortable chemistry which would work very well in another vehicle today. I wonder if they actually enjoyed working together, and what they both thought of this movie and their parts?

by Anonymousreply 204May 29, 2018 10:03 PM

Are you high, R204? Ralph & Ally were the only entertaining, interesting parts about that vaporous movie.

They were perfectly cast because of their childlike looks and demeanour, and their almost-archetypical presence. Their characters were written as enigma. Everything from their names (literally ‘Donnie & Marie’) to their accents to their backstory and their claims of kinship were meant to seem implausible because they’re grifty lowrent mercenaries. It’s just as likely that they were both just a couple of kooky maniacs from the out-of-town (but not so far out as Nawlins) who worked for the Mob but wanted to stay untraceable, so decided to invent crazy fabricated personalities to scare off questions. They were written as inept, mysterious cartoons with a line in nutso asides. Ralph did fine in the part.

They both seem like they’re having a ball playing these roles but also that works for the characters who come across as a little bloodthirsty and kinky, enough to treat killing as a game (albeit a scary, necessary one if they want to eat). Even when Ralph’s character expresses misgiving over what they’re doing he only says “I don’t wanna do this in the daytime” in a whiny pouty voice, and there’s something both sinister and funny about the delivery which clicks. Both Ally & Ralph sink into these parts, and if you let your memory go as you watch it’s even easy to forget they were Alison Basket-Case and Danny LaRusso. It’s hard to use iconic teen stars in any movie with success, but this was an inspired choice imo.

I didn’t even like GOOD NIGHT TO DIE, really (it was on the lame side of ok, with a couple of half-decent scenes with the leads), but Ralph’s parts in it are endlessly watchable. Like you said he has that intense yet appealing creepy thing going. Iirc press said that had the movie done well their characters were possibly going to get a short spinoff series on CBS or something. That would have been a fun booster addition to the resumes of both actors in their early-mid noughties.

by Anonymousreply 205May 30, 2018 6:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 206May 31, 2018 6:34 PM

It was a poor movie R201, one of those knockoff ‘Lock, Stock’ faux-noirs that were always springing up in the 00s. Every character in it was an “inept mysterious cartoon” as you excellently put it, but this was no Bakshi. It’s a cheesy, junky filmschool project that somehow snuck into TriBeCa that year. This probably seems histrionic but I remember hating it at the time and ever since I’ve been set off by any mention of it.

I think you overstate Macchio & Sheedy’s contribution, too. They were the best roles of this shoddy film and indeed fun and easy to watch (maybe that’s the popcorn pedigree), but this was obviously a quick paycheck role slumming it for both. Macchio didn’t try and Sheedy didn’t care. I’m not sure how much mileage they’d have gotten out of their own series for these characters, but there was a chance it could have been entertaining for cable. I agree that I’d really like to see them work together again and play villains, just on something better that they were both more inspired by and comfortable with.

Per IMDB the keyboard player from Yes did the soundtrack. Tbh that OST was the highlight of the film. Oh, and if you have to or choose to watch it again (why you would I don’t know) look out for the WTC shots, which were left in the movie when it was screened at TriBeCa (oooh, edgy....).

That scene in CROSSROADS where 'Blind Dog' Willie Brown (Joe Seneca, WHET?) slaps sense into Eugene (Macchio) for talking back and being a punk has me crying with laughter every damn time. It's camp brilliance. It gets even better when Willie all but calls Eugene a poseur and then tries to scam him out of his last dime.

Hard to believe Macchio was 24/25 shooting this, he looks like he's barely 17 (which makes the frequent talk of pussy and the copious whiskey seem a little extreme). As for the mullet and the blazer with the rolled sleeves..

by Anonymousreply 213June 6, 2018 9:02 PM

Actually, his temporary downturn began a few years prior to 'Naked in New York' with 'Karate Kid Part III', but nobody - especially critics in the pockets of Columbia-Tristar - wanted to cop to that in 1992. If anything, a gay role was the forward-thinking and intelligent choice for Ralph given his situation and the U.S. at the time.

R69 I was just checking the wiki for NAKED IN NEW YORK (tracking down obscure Calista Flockhart appearances, don't ask) and I notice that the page was edited last week with a change to Macchio's character bio; it now reads 'bisexual' where to my recollection it read 'gay' before (a year or so ago, if not mere weeks). On the 9th June this year or even some time before, someone saw fit to mess with the continuity...

I've seen this movie, and can confirm that Macchio's character is gay as the day is long. The character calls himself sexually "confused" in one scene, but the (awful) film never explains where this confusion arises as he shows zero interest in woman at any point. This part was definitely a gay one and iirc Macchio has said as much before (in printed archived interviews from decades ago, but still). Odd little bit of straightwashing...

by Anonymousreply 226June 11, 2018 8:28 PM

I’ve always gotten Femmey Bisexual vibes from him. I’d believe him if he insisted he never dated or seriously fell for a man (although he certainly gazes at Billy Z. in some typa way) but I don’t think I buy that he never sucked a guy to the root or took three masculine fingers a time in his life. It’s something behind his eyes that to me screams ‘was once a sultry, slutty bottom’. Maybe casting couch? And you know, his favorite things as a teenager in the ‘70s were showtunes and Astaire/Rogers movies..,

The interview R226 means is the one where Ralph said he felt “so heterosexually right” kissing Eric Stoltz. Which, yeah, the magazine in question did not ask him to clarify that. He also all but Outed his costar in the same interview by implying that his nerves about their lovescene were due to latent attraction.

It's obvious, OP. In Hollywood once you get to a certain level, you are offered the chance to go much much MUCH higher. But that comes with many things that some people refuse to do. Ralph said no to sucking off Jerry Weintraub and getting fucked in the ass by him, and that was that.

Kevin Hart, for instance, literally spread and said "let's get this shit popping in here!" ...

^^He was typecasted in the 80s, but weirdly not so much as 'the Italian kid'. He mostly just got stuck with the doe-eyed babyfaced victim-cum-unlikely-hero parts with few nods to his heritage (although yeah, Daniel LaRusso was a Jersey rat and he did play to the stereotype in 'Cousin Vinny' and one or two C-movies).

by Anonymousreply 250June 24, 2018 4:15 PM

It’s partly by the makeup of who I am, and I blame my parents for grounding me. I’ve always kept one foot in and one foot out. Family is hugely important to me, and living away from Hollywood in New York is a big part of it. I wasn’t the guy running out to the Viper Room or clubs until three in the morning. I was the guy running back to watch the Mets win the World Series in 1986. I wanted to go to the hockey game or the family picnic.

R251 that Psych episode Ralph featured in was a season 5 hilight, and one of the best in the series.

It was also the first moment I wondered about Macchio’s sexuality. His character was angrily eyefucking Timothy Omundson’s character through the whole episode and there was definitely sexual tension (their characters were rivals). Ralph never seems to get so invested when acting opposite women.

R51 there’s a blind posted here from like a decade ago which had Ralph’s name as the answer, but a lot posters disputed it’s validity (because, yanno, it’s an x-posted BI and this is Datalounge).

It concerned an iconic 80s actor known for a single franchise, who allegedly used to brag at Hollywood parties/mixers that all he had to do to lock in his star-making role was suck this Director’s dick like a champ which he did with gusto. Well, gusto enough to relate the story many a time afterward.

by Anonymousreply 300August 4, 2018 3:53 AM

He is a lucky bastard generically. The hyperjuvenated looks are a double-edged sword careerwise though and Ralph didn't really take full advantage of them on a personal level as far as we know.

On the one hand, you’re eligible and desirable for teenaged roles until you’re 30 (no school schedule to work around or guardianship required). Teens on screen is a big market with a lot of opportunities. On the other hand, no one takes you seriously in adult roles and the only ones you get are playing grown people who are in some way stunted (e.g. Nick Conforth of PYSCH in Macchio’s case) which is a small niche

by Anonymousreply 301August 4, 2018 8:19 AM
