Which roles were given because of the casting couch?
Does anyone know which roles for films or TV series were given because of the casting couch?
I don't mean someone being sexually abused/raped, but someone who willingly consensually had sex with a producer, or someone else to get a part in a film or TV show.

Actually, what we have learned from everything is that women don’t gain roles from being exploited.
Asia Argento was sexually assaulted & intimidated into continuing sexual contact with Weinstein, the most powerful producer around. He acted like his sick powerplay was a consensual relationship & even offered her jewels, homes, furs etc. But what did he do for her career? Nothing at all.

Ok, here's my suspicion about the 'casting couch'- I think it's likely it has very little effect in deciding who's eventually picked for the role. I suspect that for every actor who sucked off the guy with the couch and won the role, at least a half a dozen other competing actors were also conned into fucking him, and he role just went to whoever was going to get it anyway .

Gwyneth Paltrow in ANYTHING, i am guessing. Tried re-watching Emma last night and i was shocked at how ugly she looks in the movie (little tiny bald skull fused to a giant nose and jaws. Freakish really). How appallingly bad her English accent is. How really painful her performance is. Harvey must have been totally turned on by the schiksa jewess aspect of her persona. Emma is so extreme in its ridicukous casting of GP, i have to think her parents were fine with this, maybe encouraged it. It would explain the off the charts entitlement.

I am relatively certain that the casting couch is 100% part of any young, hot actor's job description. You have to be cute, have some ability and then do SOMETHING that gets the casting director's attention. This does mean full on sex, but you are required to be an exhibitionist at minimum. Not all roles require this - and there are plenty of parts for old, fat, whatever type characters. Talent is talent, but the sexy roles go to the seducers. The casting directors are not actually the predators in most cases - they are the prey. They hold the cards and the sexy young studs (or starlets) want what they have to offer. It is an easy equation. I know firsthand about sexy Disney actors who at the age of 14/15 or so seduced older men to get roles. No sex, but allowing themselves to be pinched, groped, spanked, molested. I am friends with a few (now in their 20's) who did just that. And they are straight guys too...

It can'y hurt!
Look at Joan Crawford's meteoric rise from NOWHERE.
She was a very poor girl who started college, but lasted less than a year before the siren song of working in Chicago nightclubs as...well, talent of some sort. Then within ONE year, she moves to NYC ending up in the chorus of TWO Broadway shows within six months...again, with all of her "talent". Then, out of the blue she is "scouted" by Benny Thau of MGM, and given a one-way train ticket to Los Angeles and a six-month contract at MGM, where she applied her.....talent. She is playing leading roles within about a year. She somehow managed to distinguish herself from hundreds of newbies under contract and thousands of taller, prettier more trained girls in Hollywood. You think?
I am guessing her talent wan't what we think of as "acting"
by Anonymous | reply 75 | November 25, 2017 9:18 PM
|
R75, the movie studios used to send out talent scouts to scour chorus lines and nightclubs all over the US, not for beauties or talent necessarily, but for photogenic faces. And by some lucky accident Joan Crawford was fantastically photogenic, plus she had screen presence out the wazoo and even learned how to act!
So it's not surprising that she managed to rise rapidly in Hollywood once she got there, she was just what they wanted. Of course she probably fucked every man in a suit in the LA Basin to help herself along, but blowjobs alone don't explain her meteoric rise.

Colin Farrell was absolutely a casting couch case. One year he was in this BBC Irish show called Ballykisdangel the next year he is starring in all of Joel Schumacher’s Hollywood films!!
Someone once said something interesting to me. That people see The Casting Couch as this one time thing - have sex for the part, job done. But it’s way more than that. These men and women have to effectively become mistresses or trade to these influential men. If the wannabe doesn’t get a part and launch before the executive loses interest, they have no hope. As the executive not only dumps them but wrecks any chance they have of a career as they are seen as a liability. The fame and success guarantees their silence.
I wasn’t so aware of how Weinstein was operating, but I know the gay ones like Schumacher and Spacey pass young men around. So the likes of Farrell, Channing Tatum and Ryan Phillippe were literally fucked by a selection of gay men in the industry before they got their first big roles.

I would guess that conservatively at least 75% were cast following this policy (sex, molestation, sadistic or voyeuristic behavior..). Connections and nepotism are the few exceptions. Good looks and talent are sought after commodities in Hollywood - but hundreds of thousands of hungry, fresh hotties fit that bill. Supply and demand - pure and simple. The system has all the power (and always will) and the hoards of "quarterbacks" and "head cheerleaders" from every town/city on earth who will do whatever it takes to get in the door fuel this fire. Easy equation.

Rumor has no such thing, R122.
Mitzi Gaynor got the part because Rodgers and Hammerstein insisted on casting actors who would do their own singing. They were very interested in young Elizabeth Taylor, but her singing was not nearly good enough. That requirement eliminated any number of young actresses who might have been competition for Mitzi. Doris Day was HORRIBLY managed by her husband who refused to allow her to audition. That was the end of her. R&H didn't want to deal with her or her husband after that. Which led them back to Mitzi.

[quote]r49 The casting directors are not actually the predators in most cases - they are the prey. They hold the cards
Casting directors may decide who gets most of the auditions on any given project, but its directors and producers who have final say over who's eventually hired. Directors and producers also make requests for performers they want to see, and a casting director has no control over that.
The casting director will schedule, run, and tape the auditions, then the director and producers will use those tapes to make decisions about further readings. Or (if its a small role) just flag who they want. A casting director is part of these discussions, but it's not like they go to the top and say, "Okay, the auditions went well. I hired all the actors."
The writer is sometimes included in the casting process, but not always.

[quote]r107 Quite frankly Paltrow was very good in Emma. She plays a snooty bitch very well.
I really can't fault Goop's acting in that, or pretty much anything.
She played some nastier characters early on, like a grifter in FLESH AND BONE and a Vegas hooker in HARD 8. I wish she'd kept that up.

Michelle Williams a “marginal actress,” R129?
She was excellent in “Blue Valentine” against the less-restrained Ryan Gosling, played a convincing (and touching) Marilyn Monroe in “My Week with Marilyn,” and devastating in “Wendy and Lucy.” And now she’s playing Gwen Verdon? She’s got talent.

It is so unfortunate what the untalented and the not-so-pretty had to do for a picture. I cannot imagine exposing it all to anyone like that Lawrence girl. A lady need to have class.

I remember reading a rumor on several different sites back in the day that Mark Hamill used the casting couch for the role of Luke Skywalker. It wasn't with George Lucas, though. I can't remember who it was. Maybe a casting director? But the rumor was the role was down to Hamill and someone else (can't remember who). Hamill was willing to do what the someone else wasn't, so Hamill got the part.
