Why isn't Stephen Dorff a bigger star?

I first noticed him as Candy Darling in I Shot Andy Warhol, a movie I loved (also became a fan of Lili Taylor thanks to that one). Why didn't Stephen Dorff become a bigger star though? He's hot as fuck. Not a bad actor in the right roles. Starred in movies alongside the likes of Morgan Freeman, Reese Witherspoon, Jack Nicholson, Michael Caine, Sharon Stone, Dennis Quaid, Susan Sarandon, Helen Mirren, Emile Hirsch, Dakota Fanning. His Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel Leatherface arrives on Netflix in December (no theatrical release apparently).

Does he just have a bad attitude or reputation?

I remember when I wrote a script with him in mind about a decade ago and suggested him to my agent but she refused to pass it along to him, declaring that he "bounces off the walls." Did he have a drug problem?

Something about him is very off-putting to me but I can’t put my finger on what.

He has a nice body and great dick size. Too bad we don’t see more of him

You can catch him in Lee Daniels' new smash hit show, Star!

by Anonymousreply 3November 6, 2017 5:24 PM

Has a "bad boy" handsome look reminding me of pre-plastic surgery Mickey Rourke. He could play Ben or Casey Affleck's brother.

by Anonymousreply 4November 6, 2017 5:31 PM

Remember watching him in that fucked-up 80's movie, The Gate.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 5November 6, 2017 6:43 PM

It's hard to believe that the slightly chubby, dorky kid from The Gate grew up to be Stephen Dorff.

by Anonymousreply 6April 16, 2020 2:24 AM

Why aren't you a bigger star, OP?

by Anonymousreply 7April 16, 2020 2:32 AM

Stephen was a major object of my teenage masturbatory fantasies. I've always found him ridiculously hot. That body!—that hair!—that face! He has the same kind of rough trade sex appeal that Brad Renfro had. He is also a good actor. I can only guess, but I think it's possible his career has been diverted over the years by too much partying--drugs, booze, and cigarettes. I remember reading a few years ago that he had emphysema, and he was only in his forties.

He was on Roseanne and in a Britney video.

by Anonymousreply 10April 16, 2020 2:56 AM

And he's "family"

by Anonymousreply 11April 16, 2020 2:57 AM

He’s the right age for good character parts, but for years I don’t think Hollywood knew what to do with him. He’s also pretty short like 5’4-5’5.

by Anonymousreply 12April 16, 2020 3:05 AM

Some motha fucker’s always trying to ice skate uphill.

by Anonymousreply 13April 16, 2020 3:11 AM

I saw him interviewed not too long ago and was pleasantly surprised to learn that he’s not a self-obsessed douche. He seemed really likable and he told some funny Hwood stories. Apparently he’s partied with all the big shots.

by Anonymousreply 14April 16, 2020 3:15 AM

I thought he had a rep for being inappropriate with female costars in the past R11 so how do you know he's "family"?

by Anonymousreply 15April 16, 2020 3:17 AM

I don't care how short he is. He's hot and talented. Loved him in "Always Remember I Love You" with Patty Duke.

by Anonymousreply 16April 16, 2020 3:22 AM

In 1991, I was having lunch at a restaurant in London. There were a group of 4 men sitting at an adjacent table. One of the men went to the rest room and the other 3 men called the waiter over to quickly order a birthday cake for him. When the guy returned from the rest room, the other 3 men and the waiter sang Happy Birthday. The guy was clearly embarrassed by it all and sat back down. He made eye contact with me and I also wished him happy birthday. We spoke for a bit and he said he had just returned from making a movie in Africa called The Power of One. It wasn't a humblebrag but, rather, he seemed excited for the opportunity to be in the movie. I later learned it was Stephen Dorff. He was 19 at the time.

by Anonymousreply 23April 16, 2020 7:34 AM

I agree, R24. I think his name was his downfall. It sounds too much like Dork.

by Anonymousreply 25April 16, 2020 8:16 AM

Yeah evidence is all the stupid shit posted by brain dead celebs on social media. They are their own worst enemy. They need someone to filter their stupid comments and opinions. I’m sure Nancy’s manager read her the riot act over this interview.

R24, R25 - is his name any worse than Pitt?

by Anonymousreply 33April 16, 2020 10:34 AM

R31 I can actually envision this having happened, though NPH would've been one lucky son of a bitch, because he was one homely teenager (and is still not really that good-looking IMO). I remember reading an interview with Stephen once where he said that he grew up with his mom around all of her gay friends and drag queens, so if he were family I find it odd that he'd keep it concealed. Then again, I also find it kind of odd that he's never been married too. I know he's had some girlfriends over the years. Could be bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 34April 16, 2020 10:43 AM

Does "messy" have some new, millennial meaning that goes beyond skid marks in his underwear, a week's worth of old Starbucks cups in his car, and leaving dishes in the sink? This is the second time I've read it somewhere on DL in the past few days. I know it's the title of a song by a new group called TwinXL, so I thought maybe it's the new "random."

I liked him in that S.F.W. movie with Reese Witherspoon where they are held hostage in a convenience store and it ends up being filmed so they become reality stars from it. It was made back in the 90's before the reality show craze started.

His father is a very successful LA-based songwriter. I used to write, and wrote a few songs with him. He was very nice, very talented, and very proud of his two kids, Stephen, and Andrew, a country writer I also knew, who died a few years ago. Andrew was incredibly kind and generous. Whenever he was in a restaurant and saw people he knew, he would send a bottle of wine to to the table. I don't remember how he died, but it was very sudden.
