he's too cute and funny to be 100% straight. AND TOO STYLISH.

Taika Waititi sounds like a cocktail at a kitschy Polynesian restaurant.

by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 5, 2017 10:44 PM |
Love him. He was in a very quirky movie kind of like a New Zealand version of Napaoleon Dynomite called The Eagle And The Shark. I think its on Netflix. He starred , wrote and directed a wonderful movie called boy that I He also was in a movie called Boy that I highly recommend. He some kind of odd mixed background which makes him even more endearing one of his parents is of Jewish descent. So he is like a Jewish Maori, talk about a Unicorn. Very talented guy. Love that you made a thread on him OP New Zealand is one of those countries I find fascinating.

At the end of Boy he and the cast did this totally cool Haka ,which is a traditional Maori dance ala Michael Jacksons Thriller.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 5, 2017 10:53 PM |
He is very talented. "Boys in the trees"? I love how OP reduces him to nothing more than a joke and sex object. Talented director reduced to his "fuckability". Oh and OP you really cant tell by his eyes....thats something is a bit "off" with him?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 5, 2017 10:59 PM |
I've never seen any movie by him, so i can't comment on his talent. I started this thread because i find him irresistible. If he's good at what he does even better! You should relax, r10

by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 6, 2017 1:01 AM |
He's hot (his humor/personality helps) and he knows it. That's why he did so many interviews/promo for Thor, more than a director usually does.
I look up to him (like so many other newfound fans) cos of his KWIRKYY public persona, but also seems like a good leader/boss, with clear direction and vision as a director. Seems to work well with the Thor actors and they love him.
I've seen Ruffalo, Goldblum and Hemsworth praise him loads. Wonder what hiddleston thinks of Taika's style.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 6, 2017 3:16 AM |
Waititi's best films are those that showcase the beauty and culture of New Zealand, such as Boy, the excellent The Hunt for the Wilderpeople, with Sam Neill, and the way off the wall What We Do in the Shadows. Like many middling, frustrated actors, he found that he was wanted behind the camera rather than in front of it. And like many directors, he uses the same actors - Rachel House, Cohen Holloway, Jermaine Clement and Rhys Darby - in his films. I haven't seen his "Hollywood" film, but I do hope that he will return home and continue to make films there.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 6, 2017 3:22 AM |
He hangs with that crowd of NZ comics like Jermaine Clement and Rhys Darby. I find their humor naive but hilarious. If anyone has ever watched Flight of the Conchords on HBO-- same type of humor.

Wtf, you have Cate The Great and you fucking waste her like that? Especially when it was a one off thing you make sure to get as much as possible of an actor of such caliber. She had at most 15 minutes of screen time.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | November 7, 2017 5:28 AM |
r41 yeah, that was odd. She shows up and then they put her on Asgard for her to walk around for 15 minutes while Thor and Loki are an another planet for 75% of the movie.

[quote]Waititi and Clement in the back.
And in the foreground between them is Oscar-winner Bret McKenzie, the other half of Flight of the Conchords with Clement.
Anyway, Taika's a beautiful man and talented in a singular way. Honestly, I can't imagine how excited he was to infuse his cultural background with Thor: Ragnarok. From voicing Korg to casting the hilarious Rachel House as Jeff Goldblum's right hand woman. Those touches alone made Ragnarok one of Marvel's best.
What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople are already hailed as cult classics, and Thor's success can only help Waititi's career. Really excited for him. Couldn't have happened to a better artist.

Both, and a writer as well.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | November 7, 2017 10:51 AM |
Waititi also wrote the inital screenplay for Moana, which included Clement as the voice of Tamatoa the coconut crab and Rachel House as Moana's grandmother Tala.

Maori Men are kind of unusual and interesting.
Big brown eyes. Self-possessed. NOT intellectual or grasping. Soft, endearingly childlike and gentle but sometimes fly into rages. Lots of them became very fat in middle aged like most Polynesians.
The porn performer called "Rogan Richards" is so.

by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 13, 2020 11:19 PM |
He's incredibly talented, incredibly sexy, and is probably going to be single handedly responsible for reviving the popularity of comedy films. He's also, most importantly, a VERY vocal gay ally. He's currently fighting with Disney to make multiple gay Marvel characters, and I don't mean like that bullshit in Endgame. Thor, Valkyrie, and Korg were all supposed to be bisexual and gay respectively in Thor Ragnarok but Disney shut it down and made them cut scenes showing this.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 13, 2020 11:22 PM |
Maori guys are just hot in general. They got the soulful eyes and tan skin, they've got the firm jawline. They just look good. So the most attractive Pacific Islanders, and probably the most attractive Asians, possibly accepting Koreans, but there's something very raw and physical about Maori guys that just is so hot.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 13, 2020 11:22 PM |
He's very hot, though it was unsettling to see him as Hitler in Jojo Rabbit, but in a weird sort of way he had a commanding presence which almost made you like him in that role for the first scene or two. (It's odd to say that, yes, it's Hitler, but you'd have to see the movie.)
by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 13, 2020 11:22 PM |

I wouldn't go so far R65, but he does seem to be trying WAY TOO HARD to be witty, clever and funny in R71's link, and it just makes him look like he thinks he needs to be 'on' all the time in order to be accepted.
He's hot, and definitely charismatic, but is losing his looks fast. Even with good lighting and photoshop, those heavy, droopy eyelids makes him look a LOT older than just 45.

Taika wrote the screenplay and directed the movie "Jojo Rabbit". He played Hitler in it as well, brilliantly comically. He won the Oscar for "Best Adapted Screenplay". The film was nominated for "Best Picture" and Scarlett Johansson was nominated for "Best Supporting Actress" as well. I'm surprised so many people haven't associated his name with this film. A lot of the people I know loved it. I really enjoyed it, as well.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | December 9, 2020 2:11 AM |
And he was the ONLY good thing in that awkward, overrated film R98. It starts out hysterically, because of his wild, funny performance, but then gets serious, too serious IMO, and drags on and on and on...
Perhaps he deserved the Oscar for the script, but Best Picture? No way. It almost wasn't a film, but more like a play. Very wordy, more for the stage...
by Anonymous | reply 99 | December 9, 2020 3:00 AM |
R99 - well plenty of people would disagree with your assessment. I thought it was a fine film, not without a few flaws.
How can you not get serious about Nazis and WW2? To not do so would be strange and dismissive of what was going on around them.

I liked Jojo Rabbit.
Having said that, it did do a HUGE shift in tone about 3/5ths of the way through and while the acting is good, it didn't *quite* ace the landing.
But I was still entertained, and thought the way that Jojo was swept up as if Hitler was a comic book character had a lot of parallels to today.
And yes, Mr. Waititi is handsome in an offbeat way.

My partner knew Taika quite well in NZ and he has always been a bottomless pit of need, desperate for validation, attention, and escape. The difference: in NZ, he realised he was a big fish in the tiniest of ponds and he was also surrounded by people who had known him for years and weren't afraid to tell him to calm the fuck down.
Then he went to LA and (somehow, at his age) mistook classic hanger-on behaviour as genuine friendship and acceptance, and the rest is history. He speaks in a bizarre sing-songy voice that he never had before; he hangs out with Jeremy Renner and a bunch of twenty-somethings; his wife got sober and left him, etc., etc.
Despite all of that, he comes off more as sad — deeply sad — than as a jerk.

I worked for the Film Commission, r111 - I know exactly how it works. We had people applying for funding using fake names just to get a foot in the door: 'Sue Parata' 'Unity Reihana' all with female Pasifika 'producers' attached. All bullshit of course, but the middle managers creamed themselves over that shit. I was the one checking that there were enough female/Maori/Pasifika scripts being fast tracked no matter the quality. The number of good scripts sent to the rubbish because they didn't fit the 'theme' was heartbreaking.
And I'm a (now cynical) Maori women from Porirua. So go fuck yourself.

by Anonymous | reply 118 | December 30, 2020 9:37 PM |
Terrible, terrible mockumentaries r118.
The other projects I can remember beat by beat.
Usually the protagonist is a Maori/Pasifika/Asian twenty-something in the city. After a tragedy they must go back to their small town/island and/or deal with a clash of cultures. There's the stern father/grandfather figure stuck in the old ways, the cousin who provides comedic value, but is going down a bad path, the old friend who never left the town and isn't book-learned, but teaches the protagonist something important about family and friendship, the all-knowing, magical grandma who passes on something of historical/cultural value - but only after the protagonist passes some sort of test...on and on and on.
It's porn for middle-class white people and I loathed it.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | December 30, 2020 10:46 PM |
