If you're going to get plastic surgery, you should just get a subtle eye job and a neck lift. So many people go overboard and end up looking like freaks of nature.

Trust me, R76, I did it, just the eyes as R77 suggests, and indeed had that middle of the night moment at a mirror where I looked at myself with Frankenstein stitches under my eyes and wanted to cry. Not quite what you are describing but very close. Swore I'd never do it again and never did, even though it looked fine once it healed. The scar is halfway down my cheek now which spells out the problem -- it doesn't last longer than a year or two, gravity takes over and it is so not worth the money nor the pain. Nor the necessity to keep getting it done over and over which is how the disasters happen.

I was so excited to see IT'S ONLY A PLAY on Broadway. Because of its cast, I bought tix to the first preview when it would be unlikely that anyone would be out. What a trainwreck. First, Broderick was horrible but the biggest disappointment was Stockard Channing who was unrecognizable. It was impossible to enjoy her performance. She didn't look human.

Where do most of these celebrities find their surgeons and cosmetic dermas? There's some pretty horrendous work pictured in this thread.

It always amazes me how the some of the wealthiest people in the world end up looking like freaks, these people have lots of money and access to the best plastic surgeons in the world, yet so many of them end up looking like freaks from a circus sideshow.

I've seen some of the worst plastic surgery on famous people and some of the best on ordinary people. A few of my female friends had plastic surgery and other work done, they all look amazing. They look refreshed, not pulled, puffy and freaky. All of my female friends were attractive before their work, they didn't go in asking the surgeons, or cosmetic dermas, to transform them into super models.

It's always a joke when an average looking celebrity thinks plastic surgery will give them someone else's beautiful face. Unfortunately so many of them DO end up with some else's face, the face of a monster!

I think the surgeons secretly hate the uber famous fraus and fuck up their faces on purpose.

It's age. And the pressure to look young - forever. Clearly that's impossible. So people get cosmetic work done.

I remember years ago, a twenty something friend - great looking young woman - very photogenic - was an aspiring young writer. She told me she'd been talking to another writer who was now in her fifties - and had been a knockout when young and was still gorgeous. My young friend was in awe of this woman and said something about how beautiful she was. The woman apparently looked very reflective and sad - and murmured something about watching her looks slide every morning in the mirror... my friend was gobsmacked. And commented wistfully about how it must be awful for really beautiful people to see their looks fade...

Cut to twenty years later - and now my young friend is doing her best to fight time herself. Exacerbated by recently acquiring a much younger partner. She's become pretty successful and the pressure on her to present a glamorous front is intense. Surgery is in the offing.

That's why people have work done.

Hell - I'm an average looking guy - no model - but not a troll either - and always thought I looked and did ok. But now when I look in the mirror - I'm shocked at the image I see there. If there was any way that I could roll the clock back a little and get rid of some of the bags and lines - that didn't involve a lot of pain - and the possibility of being permanently fucked up if a practitioner is having a bad day! - is probably go for it...

So I can't judge anyone who feels they want to do something about it. It's actually awful seeing the results when it all goes wrong. They look like they've been in bad accidents or in a fire or something. Horrible.

I'm a 48 year old woman and have been getting Botox a couple times a year for the last 2 years. I get it in my forehead but not around my eyes. I get 1/2 a vial of Restylane around my mouth. The difference isn't huge but it's enough to smooth things out a bit. No one will mistake me for being 25 but I think it has made a difference.

I love Stockard Channing, she had such a great look, didn’t look like everyone else. It’s sad to think she did that to herself.

That's because the older face lift didn't cut the muscle, it was skin only. Didn't last as long but was far more natural looking. A lot of times they left the eyes alone (Crawford). Actresses drew lipsitck above the lipline for larger lips. They used pads for bigger breasts instead of disfiguring themselves with massive silicone implants. In other words it was BETTER. (There's a troll on the DL that disputes this whenever I say it because he believes modern techniques are better - they are not).

Hedy Lamarr was an exception to the rule. Her surgery was extreme and horribly damaging, IMHO.

For actresses, there really isn't THAT much pressure to look younger, in fact, it's almost impossible for surgery-ed out actresses of a certain age to be cast in anything because they don't look they're actual age and they don't look young either. If an actress wants to keep working it's best to get little to no work done. This is why so many older women roles go to the Brits who don't attempt to look younger than they are.

R170, it depends when the surgery was performed. In the 1950s and most of the 60s, I notice a lot of jaw-tightening and lower face work. Stanwyck in her 40s and 50s had a youthful jaw, but her heavy lids were left alone. Crawford's eyes were a baggy mess even though she had a more youthful lower face than her years. It seems that in the late 60s-early 70s they cut the eyes more routinely.

But the downside is you feel extra alone waking up in a hospital where nobody speaks your language (and one nurse is especially mean). Doesn't Thailand have a pretty good rep for plastic surgery? Korea has a huge industry as well and they seem to know what they're doing - you don't see a bunch of sideshow freaks running around.

^ Yes because in Thailand (and some other places outside the US) cosmetic surgeons do not accept patients that aren't good candidates for the surgery or where the surgery will not be an improvement. Or if the procedure will make them look worse because they are having surgery on top of surgery. They are more ethical. They turn patients away. Not in the greedy US though. If you have the money they have the time. Hence the freak show. Which will surely get worse over time.

I don't blame anyone for getting work done. My hairline is starting to recede (I'm 25) and if it continues to get worse I'd absolutely get a transplant of some kind. A vast majority of actors have gotten some work done at one point or another, so the good work does outweigh the bad. I'll just never understand the people who go to the extreme. Catherine Zeta-Jones got some noticeable but still decent work done eight or nine years ago and she still looked great. I was so bummed to see pictures of her recently where she took it too far.

There have been times that I've considered getting lipo or having my jowls tightened but then I see these photos and freak out. I don't want to get lipo and turn out looking like Tara Reid. Nor do I want to get my jowls lifted and turn into something like Meg Ryan.

I think with Meg Ryan her age caught up with her and she also had one of those faces that looked great youthful, but not as she aged. I am not convinced it was bad plastic surgery. I think it has more to do with she just aged, she just got older.

Forgot to mention, R170, photographs are heavily re-touched, you must know this. That's why the older actors don't look like they have bags under their eyes. Plus, if a star is photographed in a public place at night, the flash blanks out much of the details.

Are you aware that Barbra Streisand had numerous deep acne scars on both cheeks? Perhaps she had them derm-abrasioned off, but there are plenty of pics of it when she was young - if the photo has not been retouched. This shows it if you look closely:

There's a point where it's just too much, overdone, and that's when things go south and look bad. If the cosmetic surgery is obvious, as opposed to subtle and appearance-enhancing, it's never a good thing. That might have been my post, re Kelly's neck. It's just that Kelly didn't have the sort of face that would seem to age so badly. When she was younger she didn't appear to have a weak chin. In her current pics, she looks like a person who normally had a weak chin or weak jaw line. Perhaps obesity ran in her family and she dieted like crazy to remain slim. After all, she was an actress and was expected to look a certain way.

I once asked my dermo why so many celebrities have such terrible plastic surgery. She said the best surgeons- the real artists- don’t bother with celebrities. Typically celebrities require them to cater to their egos and all sorts of outrageous demands and it just isn’t worth it.

I'm pretty sure Jackie Zeman hasn't had any work done. She is first and foremost an actress and would never lower herself to doing something so base as messing with her face. She is of the school of serious actors who view their bodies as their instruments and do not believe in tampering with them. I did props on a production of Medea that she was in and she was terrific.

Remember McGillis was always a big woman too, so big that she had to be shot bending over awkwardly in most shots with Tom Cruise in "Top Gun" (another thing Kael poked fun at in her review). I always thought she looked like Frank-n-Furter myself, kind of Laverne Cox before her time. But she lives out of the spotlight now (North Carolina, maybe?) and seems happy. Nobody disagrees it's a psychiatric issue but guess what, those surgeons aren't being forced to perform those "heaps of unnecessary procedures." The onus is still all on them, the medical professional. Ever heard of the Hippocratic oath? If a patient shows signs of body dysmorphia (comes in for a third time to upgrade their tit implants, etc.) or some other deep-seated personal issue, the doc should do the ethical thing by turning them away and referring them to a good shrink.

I'm inclined to agree with the DLer above who said that the top plastic surgeons avoid performing on celebs (too much ego and general flakiness/craziness), which leaves them only with the sleazy, second-rate butcher types who are only concerned with a new set of golf clubs. Cheek implants

Too much lip filler

Too tight upper facelift making the eyes slanted upward

Too much botox which makes the eyebrows swoop too high

Old style nose job with scooped out bridge

Pixie-like tiny noses, especially on non-English or -Irish faces, eg Janet and Michael Jackson

Apart from old style work from the past, ie, scooped out nose jobs and too tight upper facelifts, all of this can easily be avoided!

Jane's had very tasteful work done. Why do these people allow their surgeons to talk them into these procedures they don't need or that will look weird. NEVER do fillers. EVER! They never look right. A face lift is fine, a neck lift is fine, getting the bags under your eyes is fine, but that's it. Do any more than that and you will look freakish.
