The cast for Ryan Murphy's "Boys in the Band" is everyone you'd expect it to be

Jim Parson, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells.

I will happily skip seeing this.

by Anonymousreply 1November 1, 2017 9:25 PM

Does Ryan Murphy EVER take a break? Jesus Christ, does he really need money this bad?

by Anonymousreply 2November 1, 2017 9:26 PM

[quote]The role of "Cowboy," a hunky hustler presented by one of the guests as a gift to birthday boy Harold (played by Quinto), remains to be cast.

by Anonymousreply 3November 1, 2017 9:31 PM

Hold the phone- Quinto is playing Harold? This thing is already at "The Lonely Lady" levels of disaster and it hasn't even finished casting.

by Anonymousreply 4November 1, 2017 9:33 PM

I will watch it. Never saw the original but it seems the consensus is it was a sad, pathetic and portrayed based on negative stereotypes. I hope this is better.

by Anonymousreply 5November 1, 2017 9:35 PM

Dun dun dun.... it's gonna be fun watch all the DL gays flip their lid haha. How dare they cast gay actors for gay roles? How dare Ryan Murphy do a broadway show about gay men with gay actors?

by Anonymousreply 6November 1, 2017 9:35 PM

Very uninteresting cast. So many possibilities with great, underemployed actors who would have loved the work.

by Anonymousreply 7November 1, 2017 9:36 PM

Adults back then seemed so much more... adult. These guys still seem like kids.

by Anonymousreply 8November 1, 2017 9:39 PM

R3 I'm sure that's just a signal Murphy is sending to Darren Criss that he hasn't done enough for the role....yet.

by Anonymousreply 9November 1, 2017 9:39 PM

R5 they're not changing the script.

by Anonymousreply 10November 1, 2017 9:40 PM

Is it going to be like that shitty The Women remake?

by Anonymousreply 11November 1, 2017 9:43 PM

What’s the point of a word for word remake.

That movie Psycho was terrible because you knew in every scene what was going to happen.

I understand the exercise being used in a film class, but it seems pointless and boring to put out such a predictable production.

by Anonymousreply 12November 1, 2017 9:43 PM

R12 Huh? Are you against them reviving Streetcar, or Long Days Journey, or Gypsy?

by Anonymousreply 13November 1, 2017 9:44 PM

r12 is shockingly dumb, even by DL standards

by Anonymousreply 14November 1, 2017 9:46 PM

Of course Quinto will play the ugly guy,he's aging horribly.

by Anonymousreply 15November 1, 2017 9:47 PM

Is Billy Magnussen too old to play the Cowboy? He's 33.

by Anonymousreply 16November 1, 2017 9:48 PM

R12 - and I'm not being snarky in asking this - but you are aware this is a Broadway theatrical production, right? It's not a film.

by Anonymousreply 17November 1, 2017 9:49 PM

Pointless, shitty, bad casting, actors too old, actors too young. Let's write it off. Let's declare it a disaster. This is DL y'all.

by Anonymousreply 18November 1, 2017 9:49 PM

Come on, R14. Don't act like the men in the play!

R12, I'm curious, how old are you?

by Anonymousreply 19November 1, 2017 9:50 PM

Yuck. HATE Rannells

by Anonymousreply 20November 1, 2017 9:50 PM

Hey, stupid, it's going to be on the stage. It's called a revival, you fucking backwoods, knuckle-dragging hillbilly.

by Anonymousreply 21November 1, 2017 9:51 PM

R18 I would see it, actually. I've been digging Murphy since OJ, and since he's given us Evan Peters as the leader of a masc gay Aryan cult.

Jesus, R21. Come on.

by Anonymousreply 22November 1, 2017 9:53 PM

R12 Don't listen. At one time I wasn't savvy about this stuff either.

I'm just curious, how old are you?

by Anonymousreply 23November 1, 2017 9:53 PM

This will be a big box-office smash. Bookmark me.

Oh look, Kevin Spacey found the DL.

by Anonymousreply 26November 1, 2017 9:58 PM

Jim should be Harold. Zachary isn't ugly enough.

by Anonymousreply 27November 1, 2017 9:59 PM

So, who's who? It's hard for me to picture anyone as Harold, but Leonard Frey, but I think the play's worth reviving.

Too bad Kevin Spacey's such an awful person, he would actually be good in this.

by Anonymousreply 28November 1, 2017 10:00 PM

Matt Bomer should play all the parts, revealing that all the Boys are facets of a single deranged person's damaged psyche, but white and pretty still

by Anonymousreply 29November 1, 2017 10:01 PM

R29 we need to start a crowdfund for that

by Anonymousreply 30November 1, 2017 10:05 PM

Thank you r21. None of the idiots seem to realize this is a broadway show.

Ill skip this, says the person posting from flyoverland that has never been to a broadway show.

STINK FEST!

by Anonymousreply 32November 1, 2017 10:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 33November 1, 2017 10:06 PM

i just noticed Quinto's pic in the story. Jesus Christ, he looks... very special.

by Anonymousreply 34November 1, 2017 10:08 PM

For R28,

[quote]Each of the four is an alum of Murphy's TV ventures. Parsons (The Normal Heart), Quinto (American Horror Story), Rannells (The New Normal), and Bomer (The Normal Heart, AHS) will take on the roles of Michael, Harold, Larry, and Donald, respectively, on stage.

by Anonymousreply 36November 1, 2017 10:13 PM

I would have thought Rannells was playing Emory. Someone else more flaming than him is playing Emory?

by Anonymousreply 37November 1, 2017 10:14 PM

I would be hard pressed to think of something I'm less interested in seeing.

by Anonymousreply 38November 1, 2017 10:16 PM

I thought they would just use Rannells' face to put the birthday cake on.

by Anonymousreply 39November 1, 2017 10:17 PM

Careful, R38. The reminder of the existence of TBitB has gotten our less successful DLers riled up, and they're trying so very, very hard to be witty. You may just get called a hillbilly idiot! And then won't you feel bad?

by Anonymousreply 40November 1, 2017 10:18 PM

I wonder how Murphy will do as a theatrical producer. He's notorious for losing interest in his work halfway through, I wonder if theatre will be able to hold his focus.

by Anonymousreply 41November 1, 2017 10:22 PM

[quote]Jim should be Harold.

by Anonymousreply 43November 1, 2017 10:26 PM

How about Kyle Dean Mason?

by Anonymousreply 44November 1, 2017 10:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 45November 1, 2017 10:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 47November 1, 2017 10:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 61November 1, 2017 10:52 PM

It’s upsetiing they cast openly gay men in this.

by Anonymousreply 62November 1, 2017 10:54 PM

Shawn Mendes make his Broadway debut as The the Cowboy.

Or maybe Tommy Di Diarrhea?

by Anonymousreply 63November 1, 2017 10:55 PM

Totally! At least in the original cast, they had the good sense to cast red blooded, American straight men, every last one of 'em.

by Anonymousreply 64November 1, 2017 10:56 PM

Jesus christ it's Ryan Murphy people. You know it's going to end up being Colton Haynes.

by Anonymousreply 103November 2, 2017 2:39 AM

How many of them sucked Ryan's tiny dick to get the part?

by Anonymousreply 104November 2, 2017 2:40 AM

R103, or Finn Wittrock.

by Anonymousreply 105November 2, 2017 2:40 AM

This is how Murphy keeps these guys in his exploitative and embarrassing (but popular) TV shows. As part of his deals with them, he produces a Broadway show for them to do so they can all show off what artistes they are, then Murphy puts them back in rubber masks and thongs in his TV shows. Everybody wins? He did the same for Jessica Lange -- he got her to sign for a couple extra seasons of AHS by agreeing to produce (with Roundabout) Long Day's Journey into Night so she could play Mary Tyrone.

I'm sure it'll be fine -- I'd actually be interested to see Parsons play Michael because it's such a departure for him to play a brittle monster. And he might have the chops for it! I'd pay to see. But Bomer? Come on. He can't project to a camera six feet in front of him, let alone to the cheap seats.

I did notice they've cast a Latino guy for Emory, which is some preemptive damage control. Emory and Bernard, the black character, are close, but Emory calls him a bunch of racist names through the show. This will go down better with a Latino Emory than it would a with a random white guy in the roll. Smart, actually.

by Anonymousreply 106November 2, 2017 4:20 AM

Mario Cantone is old enough to play Emory's dad.

by Anonymousreply 107November 2, 2017 4:39 AM

Cliff Gorman as Emory was terrific and sort of Hispanic looking. I think he was one of the few straight guys in the show, and he and his wife took in Robert La Tourneaux ("Cowboy") when he was dying and homeless.

by Anonymousreply 108November 2, 2017 4:46 AM

Sean Hayes could play Harold

by Anonymousreply 109November 2, 2017 4:54 AM

Gosh, surprise, more self loathing from Murphy. At this point he's easily the most homophobic producer in the industry. I'm a little surprised he didn't add his stock 'tranny ex-gay mother has sex with son/son figure) and then sometimes kills him, or crazed bisexual serial killer. He spends too much time in catholic church. What a mess.

by Anonymousreply 110November 2, 2017 4:57 AM

Maybe in a sequel where everyone's thirty years older, r109.

by Anonymousreply 111November 2, 2017 4:58 AM

Come on, guys. I mean really. Sorry... If we could just not hate ourselves so much. That's it, you know. If we could just learn not to hate ourselves quite so very much.

by Anonymousreply 112November 2, 2017 5:24 AM

Give it a rest R110. You're obsessed with this notion. You say it in every single Ryan Murphy thread. I'm sure he has the same complex relationship to his homosexuality that most men who are gay and 52 do. Declaring him "homophobic" over and over is reductive, and not very interesting.

by Anonymousreply 113November 2, 2017 5:28 AM

Jim Parsons couldn't give a shit about any "help" from Ryan Murphy.

by Anonymousreply 114November 2, 2017 5:58 AM

R114, do think anyone OTHER than Murphy will bother to give a gay, oppressively typecast, non-heartthrob actor who's not pushing 50 a shot at playing roles that will give Parsons his best chance at breaking free from Sheldon?

Sure, Parsons doesn't need the money. But he likes to work and he's gonna want to shake up people's perceptions of him. And that's not easy easy to do coming off of a signature role -- just ask Henry Winkler, Jason Alexander or Jaleel White,

by Anonymousreply 115November 2, 2017 6:17 AM

Ryan Murphy, that arrogant young man.

by Anonymousreply 116November 2, 2017 6:29 AM

[quote] But Bomer? Come on. He can't project to a camera six feet in front of him, let alone to the cheap seats.

Exactly. Bomer has ZERO stage presence.

by Anonymousreply 117November 2, 2017 6:32 AM

Murphy can't escape Bomer without psycho Simon side-eyeing him. I bet money that like usual, Bomer will be given the least significant but most flashy part in attempt to pull maximum impact out of him.

by Anonymousreply 118November 2, 2017 7:27 AM

[quote]Oh I'd almost forgotten about them. Arden will probably end up directing.

Read the article. It says Joe Mantello is directing.

[quote]Oh god, is this how Chris Colfer makes his Broadway debut?

by Anonymousreply 119November 2, 2017 7:32 AM

[quote]Never saw the original but it seems the consensus is it was a sad, pathetic and portrayed based on negative stereotypes.

Perfect fodder for Murphy.

by Anonymousreply 120November 2, 2017 8:11 AM

Bomer's playing the gentlest character in the play. He's largely a sounding board for the character Jim Parsons is playing, though he's in more of it than most of the characters.

Emory's from the Bronx, making him Latino works in a lot of ways--though changing his name might be a good idea.

by Anonymousreply 121November 2, 2017 8:11 AM

Is Edgar Ramirez being cast as the Latino? He does a very good accent.

by Anonymousreply 122November 2, 2017 8:14 AM

by Anonymousreply 146November 2, 2017 10:59 PM

Why isn't Neil Patrick Harris in the cast?

by Anonymousreply 147November 2, 2017 11:00 PM

Jack Donovan as Cowboy.

by Anonymousreply 148November 2, 2017 11:49 PM

I eat my own shit right out of my diaper and am proud of it!

by Anonymousreply 149November 3, 2017 12:11 AM

Another remake.

by Anonymousreply 150November 3, 2017 12:20 AM

It's a play, dear. Do we think they'll do a live TV broadcast or will Murphy try to make a new film version for HBO?

by Anonymousreply 151November 3, 2017 1:27 AM

Did anyone see the Brit revival recently? Much less starry cast,as I recall.

by Anonymousreply 152November 3, 2017 1:28 AM

[quote]Why is this embarrassing, extremely dated old relic of a period piece being revived?

Are you serious?

Datalounge in 2017 is just one great big, on-going Harold's birthday party.

by Anonymousreply 153November 3, 2017 2:02 AM

I’m surprised Jonathan Groff doesn’t have a role.

by Anonymousreply 154November 3, 2017 2:06 AM

Groff and his “acting” are well-suited to the role of Lasagna (Spaghetti & Meatballs All Sorta Flattened Out).

It’ll be a real tour de france performance!!

by Anonymousreply 155November 3, 2017 2:10 AM

Groff would be a better Donald than Bomer.

by Anonymousreply 156November 3, 2017 2:16 AM

R156 Why?

by Anonymousreply 157November 3, 2017 2:24 AM

Bomer walks into a room, all eyes are on him. That's not Donald, who's attractive enough but bookish. He's sort of, not a hand maiden exactly, to Michael but... think Lea Michele and her friend Jonathan Groff. Jonathan Groff would be a better Jonathan Groff than Bomer, ya know?

by Anonymousreply 158November 3, 2017 2:36 AM

I don’t know, Donald was really hot but kind of gentle and mothering.

I can see Bomer pulling it off.

by Anonymousreply 159November 3, 2017 2:42 AM

I saw the movie of Boys In the Band about a decade ago when I was in my mid-20s, and I have to say it was very uncomfortable for me to watch. Such self-loathing and hatred of each other, they were all so fucking miserable. Of course I realize that's how it was for so many gay men of that era and that generation, but it was still depressing AF to see it. I have no interest in watching it again.

by Anonymousreply 160November 3, 2017 2:45 AM

R5, The original is brilliant, witty, poignant, and well-acted.

It is a vision of gay urban life that maybe existed and maybe didn't, but which is ultimately human and timeless.

Watch it once at least, if only to pay honor to the cast members who died of AIDS.

by Anonymousreply 161November 3, 2017 2:49 AM

I saw the revival a few years ago at the Transport Group and it was fantastic. Some of you do realize that the film is not the play, right? It's similar, but not exactly the same thing.

Some of you sound like real flyover types who obviously won't be able to see this anyway. For New Yorkers this will be one of the theater events of spring, along with Iceman, Angels and Harry Potter.

by Anonymousreply 162November 3, 2017 2:55 AM

[quote]Donald was really hot but kind of gentle and mothering.

And a bit of an neurotic mess, which in THIS play is pretty much par for the course.

I see Bomer more as Larry, the happy sensualist, it would be a play against type. He is the kind of guy I can see a character like Hank putting up with a LOT of shit for.

by Anonymousreply 163November 3, 2017 2:55 AM

[Quote] Such self-loathing and hatred of each other, they were all so fucking miserable.

You're not alone in that recollection but it's really not accurate. Michael is the only really viperous one. Harold smacks him down, but not out of hatred. That final speech is really rather a loving one. Emory gets into baiting Alan but it's comparitively mild. They were having fun until Alan arrives. Larry and Hank have a nice fuck after some squabbling. Not a case of misery all around.

P.S. Did they dance to Martha and the Vandellas in the show as well?

by Anonymousreply 164November 3, 2017 2:56 AM

You have a point, r163.

But he doesn’t bring the heat and sexual urgency AT ALL, which I think is essential to the character motivation of Larry.

by Anonymousreply 165November 3, 2017 3:00 AM

Luke Evans would be a good Larry.

by Anonymousreply 166November 3, 2017 3:12 AM

Who’s really hot, but also quite sexual that could play Larry?

I can’t think of anyone.

by Anonymousreply 167November 3, 2017 3:17 AM

[quote]Who’s really hot, but also quite sexual that could play Larry?

Hugh Jackman lol!

by Anonymousreply 168November 3, 2017 3:20 AM

Ha ha, r168!

by Anonymousreply 169November 3, 2017 3:26 AM

I've read that Friedkin's direction of BITB gave it a darker tone than the original stage version. The play has a ton of humor in it and R164 is right, the only really destructive self-loathing character is Michael--and even he's trying to fight it.

I actually find the play touching--these men are so isolated because of homophobia and they act out in various ways because of it, but they're also there for one another. At the end, they're all going off in pairs--as friends, lovers, one-night stands--except for Michael and Donald--and it's pretty clear in that last scene that Donald would be there for Michael if Michael didn't keep rejecting him emotionally. Michael doesn't allow himself to love another man. It's not an accident that Hank and Larry, who say they love one another in the play, are the happy couple at the end--accepting one another with all their differences.

It's dated, but it's aged better than a lot of other things--the lack of sentimentality helps and so does the energy of the whole thing. If Alan hadn't shown up with all his weird entitlement, it would have been a hell of a party.

by Anonymousreply 170November 3, 2017 3:27 AM

Ok, are there any “straight” actors who could play Larry?

by Anonymousreply 171November 3, 2017 3:27 AM

I would have preferred it if they cast straight actors. I’m not into the openly gay stuff.

by Anonymousreply 172November 3, 2017 3:32 AM

Tom Hardy

by Anonymousreply 173November 3, 2017 3:34 AM

R172

The sex scene between Larry and Hank is going to be triggering. But don't worry, Murphy has stipulated that Lady Gaga as Cher will be present. It will be more of a threeway.

by Anonymousreply 174November 3, 2017 3:36 AM

R171 Alas and the eternal yearning gay men have for straight men continues. This thread is a fucking living Boys in the Band.

by Anonymousreply 175November 3, 2017 5:12 AM

Jim Parsons. Really? He is so homely.

by Anonymousreply 176November 3, 2017 5:22 AM

Some of the original cast members were straight, r175.

The point is that we can’t think of anyone today who’d make a good Larry.

by Anonymousreply 177November 3, 2017 5:33 AM

I think this should be cast with Bradley Cooper, George Clooney, Tom Cruise and Hugh Jackman.

by Anonymousreply 178November 3, 2017 11:13 AM

R168, He stipulated sexual, not asexual.

by Anonymousreply 179November 3, 2017 11:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 180November 3, 2017 11:54 AM

I know the word "homosexual" is thrown around a LOT in this play.

The trans and gender queer coalition is NOT gonna like this!

by Anonymousreply 181November 3, 2017 11:57 AM

If I were to predict I'd say Tuc Watkins is playing "Hank".

He LOOKS like a Hank.

I know a lot of gay survivors of the dying years in NYC who were around during the time the movie takes place, they use many of the same mannerisms. I don’t think ill of them at all, they’re of their time. I’m honored to even know them and I acknowledge their struggles.

by Anonymousreply 183November 3, 2017 3:11 PM

I think Tuc Watkins also resembles a young Larry Luckinbill, too. I feel like that's why he was cast.

Isn't the telephone game scene outdated in this age of Caller ID?

by Anonymousreply 185November 3, 2017 5:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 193November 4, 2017 12:33 AM

David Addison, r193.

by Anonymousreply 194November 4, 2017 2:15 AM

Mullet from Stranger Things should play Cowboy

by Anonymousreply 195November 4, 2017 2:27 AM

Laurence Luckinbill as "Hank" is the only man in BITB that I was attracted to. I love the little moment at 3:10 where the other party goers are mercilessly mocking the cowboy and Hank just gives him this sweet, compassionate smile. Strangely romantic.

That's why I greatly prefer film to the theater....it's difficult to convey that level of subtlety.

by Anonymousreply 196November 4, 2017 4:18 AM

Donald and Hank were both so hot.

They each had a bit of sweetness to them.

by Anonymousreply 197November 4, 2017 4:53 AM

Combs looked odd to me. The eyebrows were almost non existent, like an off duty drag queen. Nice build, though.

I don't think anyone in the cast wad a total knockout. Keith Prentice would probably be my pick.

by Anonymousreply 198November 4, 2017 5:16 AM

I wonder if they're considering casting a porn model as The Cowboy. It would kind of pay homage to Robert La Tourneaux. I don't know if he did porn, but until he died of aids, he was working as an escort and ran ads in Frontiers.

by Anonymousreply 199November 4, 2017 7:11 AM

R12, disregard the snarky bitches. Given that you thought this was to be a film remake, I think you're right. There was no point to the "Psycho" remake, or re-creation, as there isn't to most (excepting "The Maltese Falcon, "1941, the third version of the novel ). The only reason to remake a movie is that the first version wasn't good enough. That's not usually the case--Manchurian Candidate, Cape Fear.

That's very different from remounting a new production of a play. Maybe because a film is a self-contained entity, with all the camera angles and the edits. A great play allows for a range of interpretations and mise-en-scene.

by Anonymousreply 200November 4, 2017 7:44 AM

I believe they attempted an Off- Bway revival years ago. And it didn't do well. (of course, it didn't have a name cast).

How about "The Girls in the Band?" Or is that "The Women?"

by Anonymousreply 202November 4, 2017 8:25 AM

I can’t wait to see the chemistry among these actors, who are all friends irl. I’d like to sit in on rehearsals. Wonder if they’ll all go out to eat somewhere (public). That would be fun to see.

Hard pass. Save your money & watch the movie. The cast is too obvious. And I’ve never been a fan of Zach Quinto.

by Anonymousreply 228December 16, 2017 11:05 AM

Part of the reason the play and the movie worked before is because the cast was not well-known to the general public. Filling it with A-list gays regardless of whether they're right for the part is a recipe for disaster. And Ryan Murphy is one of the worst producers working in show business today. He's proof that gay white gentile liberals are the most privileged members of the gay community; someone that untalented who was either of color, Jewish, or both would never have gotten as far as he did.

by Anonymousreply 229December 16, 2017 11:08 AM

Can't we have a production of this show with every race except whites in it?

by Anonymousreply 230December 16, 2017 11:13 AM

The original cast was mostly unknowns when they did it. It's a miracle they got called back for the movie at all.

by Anonymousreply 249January 5, 2018 1:52 PM

I'm rewatching the film version right now on the YT. Kenneth Nelson, Federick Combs and and Peter White are the weak links. Combs and White say all their dialogue in the clenched jaw '..and then he stepped on the BALL' way that's very off putting. It kills all of Combs' funny lines, and makes White seem incredibly gay even though he's supposed to be the straight one. Combs isn't a very good actor either. And Nelson just isn't good in the role because you have no sympathy for him. You need a likable actor to play such an unlikable character.

BUT it's a very entertaining movie.

I don't get why people think BITB is a dated, stereotypical play? Bitchy, mean, effeminate gays exist by the plentiful. The so-called SAGs (straight-acting gays) and the heteronormative wannabe couples (i.e., married with 2.5 kids) are a small minority.

by Anonymousreply 262August 9, 2018 10:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 264August 9, 2018 11:23 PM

I can see it being “outdated” for some who live in a bit of a bubble of “everything’s fine now”. Good for them.

Bit of a bitchy comedy perhaps, but for those who lived through those situations and recognize themselves or others in those characters it was more of a dramedy, and still relevant and needed representation in today’s age. Glad they made it, happy to have seen it.

The fact you could hear seats cracking as people couldn’t sit still for the quiet “really serious” bits of dialogue tells me there’s still a need to tell those stories.

Can’t compare to the original (I would have been 5 yo) but really curious to see what got axed to make the current version.

by Anonymousreply 265August 10, 2018 12:52 AM

[quote]I can see it being “outdated” for some who live in a bit of a bubble of “everything’s fine now”. Good for them.

The popular YouTube channel WatchMojo is like that. A few months ago, they did a list of SEX AND THE CITY storylines that wouldn't work today because we're supposedly more accepting now. One of the episodes they chose was the one where Carrie dates that bisexual and is skeeved out by the whole situation and even questions bisexuality. They called it 'biphobic,' and they seemed to think it's only a straight thing, but many in the gay community even today doubt its existence. They also think it's a gay person trying to have it both ways. Personally, I believe that sexuality is a spectrum, but many gays believe that you're either gay or straight. That's it.

They also thought the storyline where Samantha's black lover's sister disapproved of their interracial relationship was outdated. It makes me worried that the (far) left is getting just as disconnected with reality. Many of the same issues still exist in the world today. Pretending that they don't doesn't make them disappear.
