The cast for Ryan Murphy's "Boys in the Band" is everyone you'd expect it to be

I will happily skip seeing this.

Hold the phone- Quinto is playing Harold? This thing is already at "The Lonely Lady" levels of disaster and it hasn't even finished casting.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 1, 2017 9:33 PM |
I will watch it. Never saw the original but it seems the consensus is it was a sad, pathetic and portrayed based on negative stereotypes. I hope this is better.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 1, 2017 9:35 PM |
Dun dun dun.... it's gonna be fun watch all the DL gays flip their lid haha. How dare they cast gay actors for gay roles? How dare Ryan Murphy do a broadway show about gay men with gay actors?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 1, 2017 9:35 PM |
Very uninteresting cast. So many possibilities with great, underemployed actors who would have loved the work.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 1, 2017 9:36 PM |
Adults back then seemed so much more... adult. These guys still seem like kids.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 1, 2017 9:39 PM |
R3 I'm sure that's just a signal Murphy is sending to Darren Criss that he hasn't done enough for the role....yet.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 1, 2017 9:39 PM |
R5 they're not changing the script.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 1, 2017 9:40 PM |
Is it going to be like that shitty The Women remake?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 1, 2017 9:43 PM |
What’s the point of a word for word remake.
That movie Psycho was terrible because you knew in every scene what was going to happen.
I understand the exercise being used in a film class, but it seems pointless and boring to put out such a predictable production.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 1, 2017 9:43 PM |
R12 Huh? Are you against them reviving Streetcar, or Long Days Journey, or Gypsy?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | November 1, 2017 9:44 PM |
r12 is shockingly dumb, even by DL standards
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 1, 2017 9:46 PM |
Of course Quinto will play the ugly guy,he's aging horribly.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 1, 2017 9:47 PM |
Is Billy Magnussen too old to play the Cowboy? He's 33.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 1, 2017 9:48 PM |
R12 - and I'm not being snarky in asking this - but you are aware this is a Broadway theatrical production, right? It's not a film.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 1, 2017 9:49 PM |
Pointless, shitty, bad casting, actors too old, actors too young. Let's write it off. Let's declare it a disaster. This is DL y'all.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 1, 2017 9:49 PM |

R18 I would see it, actually. I've been digging Murphy since OJ, and since he's given us Evan Peters as the leader of a masc gay Aryan cult.
Jesus, R21. Come on.

by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 1, 2017 9:59 PM |
So, who's who? It's hard for me to picture anyone as Harold, but Leonard Frey, but I think the play's worth reviving.
Too bad Kevin Spacey's such an awful person, he would actually be good in this.

Matt Bomer should play all the parts, revealing that all the Boys are facets of a single deranged person's damaged psyche, but white and pretty still

R103, or Finn Wittrock.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | November 2, 2017 2:40 AM |
This is how Murphy keeps these guys in his exploitative and embarrassing (but popular) TV shows. As part of his deals with them, he produces a Broadway show for them to do so they can all show off what artistes they are, then Murphy puts them back in rubber masks and thongs in his TV shows. Everybody wins? He did the same for Jessica Lange -- he got her to sign for a couple extra seasons of AHS by agreeing to produce (with Roundabout) Long Day's Journey into Night so she could play Mary Tyrone.
I'm sure it'll be fine -- I'd actually be interested to see Parsons play Michael because it's such a departure for him to play a brittle monster. And he might have the chops for it! I'd pay to see. But Bomer? Come on. He can't project to a camera six feet in front of him, let alone to the cheap seats.
I did notice they've cast a Latino guy for Emory, which is some preemptive damage control. Emory and Bernard, the black character, are close, but Emory calls him a bunch of racist names through the show. This will go down better with a Latino Emory than it would a with a random white guy in the roll. Smart, actually.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | November 2, 2017 4:20 AM |
Mario Cantone is old enough to play Emory's dad.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | November 2, 2017 4:39 AM |
Cliff Gorman as Emory was terrific and sort of Hispanic looking. I think he was one of the few straight guys in the show, and he and his wife took in Robert La Tourneaux ("Cowboy") when he was dying and homeless.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | November 2, 2017 4:46 AM |
Sean Hayes could play Harold
by Anonymous | reply 109 | November 2, 2017 4:54 AM |
Gosh, surprise, more self loathing from Murphy. At this point he's easily the most homophobic producer in the industry. I'm a little surprised he didn't add his stock 'tranny ex-gay mother has sex with son/son figure) and then sometimes kills him, or crazed bisexual serial killer. He spends too much time in catholic church. What a mess.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | November 2, 2017 4:57 AM |

Give it a rest R110. You're obsessed with this notion. You say it in every single Ryan Murphy thread. I'm sure he has the same complex relationship to his homosexuality that most men who are gay and 52 do. Declaring him "homophobic" over and over is reductive, and not very interesting.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | November 2, 2017 5:28 AM |
Jim Parsons couldn't give a shit about any "help" from Ryan Murphy.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | November 2, 2017 5:58 AM |
R114, do think anyone OTHER than Murphy will bother to give a gay, oppressively typecast, non-heartthrob actor who's not pushing 50 a shot at playing roles that will give Parsons his best chance at breaking free from Sheldon?
Sure, Parsons doesn't need the money. But he likes to work and he's gonna want to shake up people's perceptions of him. And that's not easy easy to do coming off of a signature role -- just ask Henry Winkler, Jason Alexander or Jaleel White,

Bomer's playing the gentlest character in the play. He's largely a sounding board for the character Jim Parsons is playing, though he's in more of it than most of the characters.
Emory's from the Bronx, making him Latino works in a lot of ways--though changing his name might be a good idea.

I saw the movie of Boys In the Band about a decade ago when I was in my mid-20s, and I have to say it was very uncomfortable for me to watch. Such self-loathing and hatred of each other, they were all so fucking miserable. Of course I realize that's how it was for so many gay men of that era and that generation, but it was still depressing AF to see it. I have no interest in watching it again.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | November 3, 2017 2:45 AM |
R5, The original is brilliant, witty, poignant, and well-acted.
It is a vision of gay urban life that maybe existed and maybe didn't, but which is ultimately human and timeless.
Watch it once at least, if only to pay honor to the cast members who died of AIDS.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | November 3, 2017 2:49 AM |
I saw the revival a few years ago at the Transport Group and it was fantastic. Some of you do realize that the film is not the play, right? It's similar, but not exactly the same thing.
Some of you sound like real flyover types who obviously won't be able to see this anyway. For New Yorkers this will be one of the theater events of spring, along with Iceman, Angels and Harry Potter.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | November 3, 2017 2:55 AM |
[quote]Donald was really hot but kind of gentle and mothering.
And a bit of an neurotic mess, which in THIS play is pretty much par for the course.
I see Bomer more as Larry, the happy sensualist, it would be a play against type. He is the kind of guy I can see a character like Hank putting up with a LOT of shit for.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | November 3, 2017 2:55 AM |
[Quote] Such self-loathing and hatred of each other, they were all so fucking miserable.
You're not alone in that recollection but it's really not accurate. Michael is the only really viperous one. Harold smacks him down, but not out of hatred. That final speech is really rather a loving one. Emory gets into baiting Alan but it's comparitively mild. They were having fun until Alan arrives. Larry and Hank have a nice fuck after some squabbling. Not a case of misery all around.
P.S. Did they dance to Martha and the Vandellas in the show as well?
by Anonymous | reply 164 | November 3, 2017 2:56 AM |

I've read that Friedkin's direction of BITB gave it a darker tone than the original stage version. The play has a ton of humor in it and R164 is right, the only really destructive self-loathing character is Michael--and even he's trying to fight it.
I actually find the play touching--these men are so isolated because of homophobia and they act out in various ways because of it, but they're also there for one another. At the end, they're all going off in pairs--as friends, lovers, one-night stands--except for Michael and Donald--and it's pretty clear in that last scene that Donald would be there for Michael if Michael didn't keep rejecting him emotionally. Michael doesn't allow himself to love another man. It's not an accident that Hank and Larry, who say they love one another in the play, are the happy couple at the end--accepting one another with all their differences.
It's dated, but it's aged better than a lot of other things--the lack of sentimentality helps and so does the energy of the whole thing. If Alan hadn't shown up with all his weird entitlement, it would have been a hell of a party.

Laurence Luckinbill as "Hank" is the only man in BITB that I was attracted to. I love the little moment at 3:10 where the other party goers are mercilessly mocking the cowboy and Hank just gives him this sweet, compassionate smile. Strangely romantic.
That's why I greatly prefer film to the theater....it's difficult to convey that level of subtlety.

I wonder if they're considering casting a porn model as The Cowboy. It would kind of pay homage to Robert La Tourneaux. I don't know if he did porn, but until he died of aids, he was working as an escort and ran ads in Frontiers.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | November 4, 2017 7:11 AM |
R12, disregard the snarky bitches. Given that you thought this was to be a film remake, I think you're right. There was no point to the "Psycho" remake, or re-creation, as there isn't to most (excepting "The Maltese Falcon, "1941, the third version of the novel ). The only reason to remake a movie is that the first version wasn't good enough. That's not usually the case--Manchurian Candidate, Cape Fear.
That's very different from remounting a new production of a play. Maybe because a film is a self-contained entity, with all the camera angles and the edits. A great play allows for a range of interpretations and mise-en-scene.

Part of the reason the play and the movie worked before is because the cast was not well-known to the general public. Filling it with A-list gays regardless of whether they're right for the part is a recipe for disaster. And Ryan Murphy is one of the worst producers working in show business today. He's proof that gay white gentile liberals are the most privileged members of the gay community; someone that untalented who was either of color, Jewish, or both would never have gotten as far as he did.

I'm rewatching the film version right now on the YT. Kenneth Nelson, Federick Combs and and Peter White are the weak links. Combs and White say all their dialogue in the clenched jaw '..and then he stepped on the BALL' way that's very off putting. It kills all of Combs' funny lines, and makes White seem incredibly gay even though he's supposed to be the straight one. Combs isn't a very good actor either. And Nelson just isn't good in the role because you have no sympathy for him. You need a likable actor to play such an unlikable character.
BUT it's a very entertaining movie.

I can see it being “outdated” for some who live in a bit of a bubble of “everything’s fine now”. Good for them.
Bit of a bitchy comedy perhaps, but for those who lived through those situations and recognize themselves or others in those characters it was more of a dramedy, and still relevant and needed representation in today’s age. Glad they made it, happy to have seen it.
The fact you could hear seats cracking as people couldn’t sit still for the quiet “really serious” bits of dialogue tells me there’s still a need to tell those stories.
Can’t compare to the original (I would have been 5 yo) but really curious to see what got axed to make the current version.

The popular YouTube channel WatchMojo is like that. A few months ago, they did a list of SEX AND THE CITY storylines that wouldn't work today because we're supposedly more accepting now. One of the episodes they chose was the one where Carrie dates that bisexual and is skeeved out by the whole situation and even questions bisexuality. They called it 'biphobic,' and they seemed to think it's only a straight thing, but many in the gay community even today doubt its existence. They also think it's a gay person trying to have it both ways. Personally, I believe that sexuality is a spectrum, but many gays believe that you're either gay or straight. That's it.
They also thought the storyline where Samantha's black lover's sister disapproved of their interracial relationship was outdated. It makes me worried that the (far) left is getting just as disconnected with reality. Many of the same issues still exist in the world today. Pretending that they don't doesn't make them disappear.

They’ve become close(r) friends during this play. It’ll be hard to say good bye.

Would love to see the “curtain call” at the end of tonight’s last performance.

Maybe because I’m a sucker for those types of occasions, where it’s the last time the cast is doing that play, don’t need to save anything for the next performance, where the audience know they’re the last ones to see a limited run of a play or musical. Emotional moments.
