To continue the Japanese hetero sex thing I read, a white woman tried having normal sex with a couple Japanese guys in Japan, and they freaked out and immediately assumed the passive, female role (as in lying perfectly still). They both told her that her not lying still made them feel gay.

African-americans, Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders look just as masculine as white American men here. Also, attributing a man qualities generally associated with women is frowned upon in Asia more so than in America and that's reflected in the child rearing. There is a LONG tradition of homosexual partners and men dressing in women's clothing in east Asia. In performing arts both in China and Japan, men dressed as women has a long traditon. Also i don't kow where you went to in Japan, but Japanese gay men has a wide range from super femmy to super butch and everything in between. I usually avoid these threads because I go on DL for fun and not to analyze things but these are really general statements. You haven't met one Asian in the States who was masculine? I don't know where in the US you're from or if you grew up rich or poor or is it just East Asians because I think class and ethnicity might have something to do with these generalizations. So if you actually want a thought out answer to your general question, I'll tell you some of my experiences.

I grew up in a working class area in California. It was 95 percent minorites. Mexicans, Blacks, Southeast Asians. Many of the Asian men in my area were masculine. They worked out all the time, were on the football team. We had Asian homecoming and prom kings. Some joined gangs. They had shaved heads, tattoos. I know 2 who are still in prison for murder. 1 of them robbed a mcdonald's and someone got killed in the robbery. Another one was playing pool with friends but kept getting racially insulted by a Mexican guy, so they fought and he ended up killing the guy. Most Asian guys in my neighborhood joined the military after high school, except for me. Most of our fathers were in the military.

I will agree with you that when I went to college, many of the Asian guys did tend to fit your stereotype. It was a culture shock. I think since they grew up in upper middle class areas around mostly white people, they think and act differently. They don't have to fight people all the time or be on guard so I guess they can concentrate on academics.

After college, I got a job in Japan and lived there for two years so I also agree with you about what you saw over there. I still live in Asia. Even though I miss the states, there is a feeling of comfort here of being able to be anything you want to be without feeling bogged down by stereotypes, pressure and self-doubt. It can be psychologically freeing. America is still only 2 percent Asian. That's a really low number so I get why you're generalizing but there are masculine Asian men in the states. You'll have to go to the ghetto though. Anyway, I'll go back to avoiding these threads again and go back to the mindless fun threads now.

I have a friend from college who is a very masculine (and hetero) Korean-American guy. 6'2" and a D3 athlete. He had a lot of trouble finding women who would date him even though he's very good looking and in shape.

OP, perhaps you Hang out with an effeminate crowd of men in general, not just Asians. At my gym and neighborhood, are countless masculine Asians playing basketball, football, and hanging around macho latin and black guys. There are also Asian thuggish guys who may be part of gangs.

I grew up in Southern California, where there is a large Asian population with people from all walks of life, so I saw everything from effeminate to masculine. The Bay Area has similar demographics, and I know the Houston area has a large Asian population from all walks of life, so I've seen lots of masculine Asian men there too. My neighborhood had a lot of Filipinos, Cambodians, and Vietnamese from working class backgrounds, so a lot of them leaned masculine and rugged. There were a lot of older masculine East Asian men that I would see from time to time as well. There were several Asian guys that I had crushes on, but didn't understand/comprehend because I was 13 and barely understood homosexuality (it was the early 90s and I was raised in a religious household). When I lived in Atlanta, the Asian population there was mostly Korean and quite a few were FOBs. I did wind up becoming fuckbuddies with a Chinese man who grew up in Georgia, and happened to be masculine, well-endowed and could fuck very well. I wound up moving to Los Angeles for awhile, and I would see attractive, masculine Asian men there, but they either dated white men or other Asians, so I really didn't get much play/attention from them. Now, I live in the DC Area, which also has a large Asian population and while I do see some masculine, attractive Asian men around here, I think due to the fact that many of them grew up in the upper class suburbs in Virginia and Maryland around DC, or came from Ivy-league schools in the NE, they don't seem to have the edge that a lot of West Coast Asians have. And a lot of them act shocked that I would find them attractive.

Gay Asians in the US are immigrants. They grew up with very different family dynamics and personal expectations than their counterparts in their native countries. As an immigrant, you are taught that in order to survive, you have to make money to pay the rent, buy grocery, pay the utilities, etc... So that's what you focus on instead of working on your body or your looks.

So it's really not that gay Asians are less masculine in the US. It's that they're immigrants and they have different priorities.

In Japan, the way people perceive you is very, very important. They are very much locked into gender roles in Japan.

Sexism is still a huge issue. Homophobia is still a huge issue.

All people have to do to be masculine is self-analyze 100% of the time, which Japanese people do.

The fathers (Japan/Korea) are very strict and "being a man" is very important or else you'll lose face for the family--or the Japanese equivalent.

It's much different than other parts of Asia like the Dravidian / Indo-Iranian or Semitic areas in which the men's behaviour--in terms of masculinity--isn't considered as important, but similar to the Slavic areas of Asia.

I'd say if the family is more Ainu in Japan they will be more lax, If they are more Han, they will be more strict.
