...But Shockingly Weren't Even Nominated! (as a companion thread to Best Movie Soundtracks).
These have to be songs that were written specifically for the movie, so something like "Singin' in the Rain" wouldn't be eligible.

the most obvious omission, though there may have been some technicality that disqualified them... "Night Fever" from "Saturday Night Fever". "Staying Alive" too.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 29, 2017 8:29 PM |
How Deep is Your Love or Staying Alive from Saturday Night Fever
Mein Herr or Money, Money from Cabaret.
You're the One That I Want from Grease
Knockin' On Heaven's Door from Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
Coming Around Again from Heartburn
none of the above nominated.

Bruce Springsteen's The Wrestler, (from The Wrestler).
Truly one of the greatest, (and dumbest!!!), snubs! (and it was a snub).
A textbook example of everything a Best Song nominee should be. It was written directly for the film, soundtrack segments played throughout the film, then the complete song with lyrics played as the ending credits started to roll. The lyrics were specifically about the character, and the themes and message of the movie. Sung by an American superstar, and it was a fucking great song!
The Music branch decided to nominate only 3 songs that year, all of which were forgettable. It was the year of Slumdog Millionaire, not really a box-office blockbuster so ratings were expected to be weak, and were. The song had won the Golden Globe Award just before the Oscar ballots were sent out, and had they nominated it, most likely Springsteen would have appeared to perform it. Which definitely would have improved it's ratings.
A real shame, and blunder!

Back in the day, there was an abundance of songs that were eligible. Now they're hard-pressed to come up with enough to fill the category. And they end up giving an Oscar to crap like "It's Hard Out There for a Pimp."

Coming Around Again is brilliant.

R12 I agree with you wholeheartedly, but I happened to love "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" from Hustle and Flow.

They ignored Springsteen for "Dead Man Walking" too so must be some reason. Though he was already awarded for "Philadelphia".

Springsteen rejected Los Angeles and went back to New Jersey. Hollywood never forgets.

They lost to a song that tried to rhyme "dick" with "chicks."

And this lost to a song by a guy who later went on to lure women in his apartment via Craigslist to torture them.

Lana has gotten fucked over a couple of times now. Someone really doesn't want her to have an Oscar nomination. "Young and Beautiful" from "Gatsby", both songs from "Big Eyes"... all would've been right at home. They even disqualified one fucker the year she was overlooked for "Gatsby". They should have given her that spot once he was gone.

Although it fits the movie well, that song (by Fred Neil) wasn't written for it. Nilsson's original composition for MC was "I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City." It was never included in the final film.
