Only suburban fraus and guys that need to have sales girls reach the higher shelves for them have the big dog fetish. Unless you live in open country where a big breed can stretch out, a smaller breed makes more sense. Never mind not having to call in a forensic cleanup squad every time the pooch has an accident.

My little guys always went anywhere I did, rode in the back of my truck (a 3/4 ton Ford with a stick, not a Ridgeline, you powder puffs), travelling across the country, even swimming in the Great Salt Lake, the poodle chased small game birds from brush, just like his big cousins were bred to do. He was a laugh a minute.

My neighborhood is filled with big dogs that spend all their time locked out in the yard, they bark all day long while their idiotic 'owners' imagine that their homes are protected. A friend of mine, a former daytime burglar (never caught) said the dogs, even the attack-trained ones, were so glad for the company that they never were a serious impediment-a bag of meat treats was all he needed. A dog is no substitute for guns and alarm systems.

Pretty sure he said (as per the post up above) his husband and kids got him the dog for his birthday. So he likely had no say in it as it was a surprise.
