The oil topping isn’t doing it for me.
Do Any Movie Theaters Use Real Butter on Popcorn Anymore?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | August 25, 2018 7:34 PM |
I don't think they ever did.

I’ve always wanted to get a large movie theater popcorn to go, without buying a ticket.
I wonder if they’d sell it to me, but I don’t see why not.

The independent theater near me offers real butter as a popcorn topping, OP.
Not sure about the chains, but I thought they were trending away from oil and back to butter a few years ago.

I haven't had it in over a decade. It's all chemicals.

DC theaters - apparently only one small one uses real butter :(

Scratch that - Lsndmsrk theaters use real butter, according to the article @ r5.

Coconut oil is better tasting than canola on popcorn?
Interesting.

Are you aware what a large movie theatre popcorn costs these days? It’s not exactly a cost-effective snack.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 27, 2017 10:00 PM |
R2 - make you own with Crisco Butter Flavor Shortening. It will taste just like the movie theater version. Oh, Use lots. Don't forget to add plenty of salt.
Popcorn is a great example of a healthy snack that can be turned into a disaster in a few easy step.

Do any movie theaters use bacon grease on popcorn anymore?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 27, 2017 10:03 PM |
I once popped popcorn with Canola oil and it stank! The texture was a off, too. I'll stick to coconut oil and Flavacol.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 27, 2017 10:06 PM |
I despise both movie theaters and buttered popcorn so honestly don't know or care. I prefer to watch a movie at home or at someone else's home, where you don't have to deal with all the idiots talking, chewing and slurping constantly, doing things on their cell phones during the movie, the foul food smells, etc. It is much more enjoyable in a home setting where if someone is acting a fool you simply throw his ass out.

Who still goes to movie theaters?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 27, 2017 10:14 PM |
I only go to movies really late at night on a Sunday.
There’s never anyone there. It’s great!

I ordered a small plain popcorn the other day and my friend told me I was stupid because I was eating 400 calories of carbs even with no butter.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 27, 2017 10:21 PM |
And what did you say back, r19?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 27, 2017 10:25 PM |
If you need your friend to tell you that R19 perhaps you should spend some time researching the nutritional value of food. Also you should suggest your friend do the same, as a full cup of air popped popcorn (no butter) has around 30-40 calories, not 400.

I like that extra fine, butter flavored salt they have at the theater.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 27, 2017 10:44 PM |
Does any theatre popcorn NOT have "butter" in them now?? Almost every theatre has buttered popcorn even if you ask for no butter. Weird and annoying. The best theatre popcorn in L.A. is at the 'Nuart".

Blade Runner 2049 sucked, but it was fun zoning out for three hours in the reclining seat with a large popcorn all to myself in an empty theater.

by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 28, 2017 3:35 AM |
[quote]I once popped popcorn with Canola oil and it stank!
Your oil may have been rancid. Canola turns quickly.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 28, 2017 4:45 AM |
I suspect popcorn made with peanut oil would have a great taste. Potato chips that are taste great.
But that would open up other issues.....
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 28, 2017 9:01 AM |
When I used to make stovetop popcorn in one of those pans with the twisting hand crank blade to move the kernels around, I always used peanut oil.
That was good stuff, as good or better than at the movies, even without added butter or salt. But sometimes I added a little bit of both.

by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 28, 2017 2:48 PM |
R33 $2.99 at Trader Joe's and Aldi. And I'm sure much cheaper if you buy it in bulk.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 28, 2017 3:23 PM |
Yes, maybe 1 cup is 40 calories or so, but when you order a popcorn at the theatre you get way more than 1 cup. You get maybe 5 or 6 cups or more, even for a small. That way they justify charging you $5- $6.50. I'm glad it's winter. Now I can hide a plastic baggie or trail mix or a small bag of potato chips in my clothes. The price for refreshments at the movies is ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 28, 2017 3:55 PM |
I once knew a girl who asked for extra butter four times. The last few pieces of popcorn were floating in it. So she drank it.
And then she threw up.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 28, 2017 4:02 PM |
The only time I ever ate greasy buttered popcorn was at the movies. At home, it would be lighter, less buttered and, to be honest, less fun.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 28, 2017 4:32 PM |
They don't even pop their own popcorn, what makes you think they will use real butter?

[quote]They don't even pop their own popcorn, what makes you think they will use real butter?
I once went to a 10:00 am show. Before I went into the theater, I saw a guy haul out this huge bag of popcorn that was already popped and dump it into the machine. So, no, they don't pop their own popcorn.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 28, 2017 7:25 PM |
I worked in a movie theatre in the early 1980s. I worked in the concession stand and was an usher. A hot margarine and oil mixture was used to coat the popcorn. I even popped the pop corn. An older movie projectionist said that in the late 60s, real butter was melted and used. Back then, the concession stand was very simple, with just popcorn, sodas and candy.
I’m obviously an elder gay. I worked there while in high school and college.

It used to be one of the small pleasures of life to hear the popcorn popping, smell the buttery odor wafting through the theater, and know fresh hot popcorn was waiting for you the next time the cowboy stopped shooting long enough to do a kissy scene with the school marm.

The best homemade popcorn one can make is the following 3 ways...
1. Air popped with real butter added afterwards. Kerrygold is BEST...
2. Popped in olive oil
3. Popped in bacon grease.

Whenever that movie Spanglish with Adam Sandler came out, I went to Loews 34th Street NYC to see it and shared a big bucket of popcorn with a friend. Not sure if it was oil or butter, but afterwards I had such a major stomachache I've never eaten large amounts of popcorn since. And have never forgotten it, that's how bad it was. Maybe a few handfuls here and there, and that's it.

I had that same reaction when I saw Spanglish, but I didn't eat any popcorn.

Forget movie theatre popcorn--that stuff is inedible. If you actually still go to the cinema, smuggle in your own snacks. Otherwise, make it stovetop, in a wok, with ghee (clarified butter). Move it around constantly so the kernels don't burn. Season with real butter and salt afterwards. Best fucking thing you'll eat while binge-watching whatever.

If you're going to that much bother just stay home and wait for the DVD or direct download.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 29, 2017 9:59 AM |
I learned that you can pop popcorn in the microwave using just a paper bag and some coconut oil. Fold over the top and pop for ~90 seconds. Make sure to place the solid coconut oil on top of the popcorn so that it doesn’t melt out of the bag. After, I use Flavacol and this butter w/o water to avoid sogginess.

Do you know how cheap and easy it is to make your own popcorn? Here's what you do: Get a big, non stick pot and lid (the kind you boil pasta in), place it over medium high heat, throw in a nice sized chunk of butter. When it's all nearly melted, add your preferred seasonings to the melted butter (salt, seasoned salt, garlic salt, pepper - whatever) and swirl it around to distribute evenly. Now add enough kernals to cover the bottom of the pan entirely, and you have your own home made popcorn in just a few minutes. Going to the movie theater? If your going with a woman, have her carry one of her biggest purses with your popcorn and other goodies into the theater - hell, you can even smuggle in a six pack if you like. You're welcome.

I used to make the popcorn at a General Cinema, back when they still existed. At the time they popped the popcorn in a back room and we put it in large plastic bags that we'd then dump in the heated cases in the concession stand. I always made it with extra salt/butter seasoning because it tasted better with more of that stuff on it.
If I recall correctly we'd dump a wrapped pat of butter stuff in the cooker and then add the salt/butter flavor powder to that. The popcorn would then fill the bin and we'd scoop it into the plastic bags to be served later.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 25, 2018 5:30 PM |
Oh, and no, it was not real butter. The butter thing we put in the cooker was solid at room temperature so it was probably trans fat, and the powdered salt and whatever was some butter flavoring. I don't know if some % of it had 'real' butter. The butter topping that people can pump on it is some sort of heated oil with butter flavoring as well, probably a similar mix.

R40, eldergay here too ;-) I used to manage a concession stand and I was a little surprised to learn when I started, that the "butter" they put on popcorn was "butter oil". I've never been able to eat popcorn with "butter" on it since because I can still smell the oil when it would go rancid - which didn't seem to take too long.
Same thing with soft serve ice cream. Vile stuff.

I never eat at the movie theater. I am disgusted by anyone who shoves popcorn and soda down their throat while watching a film. So piggish.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | August 25, 2018 7:08 PM |
Seldom do I eat while at the movies. But a while back I had a soft drink and popcorn. Movie garbage food. It made me feel sick afterward. Never again. I think the chemicals in the popcorn made me ill, and having a Pepsi with that junk just made it worse.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | August 25, 2018 7:20 PM |
I use corn oil in a nonstick pan, then when popped, coat with melted butter (never margarine!) and some salt. A real treat ---and fuck the calories. It's not like you would eat it every week, let alone every day.
Air popped corn is shit----even with melted butter. Oil is an essential ingredient to making good popcorn.
