❄ We have officially exceeded 100 inches of snowfall for December, sixty five of those inches falling in since Christmas Day. And it's not warming up anytime soon, and we'll be getting more snow over New Year's Weekend. It's currently 10°F. The city is virtually at a standstill.
Be careful what you wish for, r164. A White Christmas can be pretty frightful, even if the fire is so delightful .........

I had to order a new winter coat. I get very hot with the coat closed, so I never really cared about whether or not my coat was open. I went to a funeral last week and was too cold in the cemetery and realized I needed a coat that closed. So I bought one from Eddie Bauer at 50% off plus an extra $10 off. It closes by zipper and by snaps, so I'm good now for the 18 degree weather and wind.

R177, some people think this weather is because of global warming:
"A growing body of science—some of which was recently published—is finding that as there are more years with historically low sea ice levels, there is an associated uptick in wobbly jet streams."
by Anonymous | reply 182 | December 29, 2017 12:20 AM |
thank you r182. so they think there may be a correlation between the ice melting and the cold air coming down so far. I still wonder if it is because the glaciers aren't there to catch it. The wind has to go somewhere until something stops it.
by Anonymous | reply 183 | December 29, 2017 12:29 AM |
I am reluctant to believe that a particular year or two is a trend caused by climate change. I do believe in climate change, though. I heard New England was predicted to get heavier snows, which I was fine with. But brutally cold weather, if this is a permanent change, then I think I have to move. It’s really unpleasant below, hmm, maybe 20°f.
What’s your cutoff point? But please, don’t bother telling us if it’s 40°f or above, that’s silly.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | December 29, 2017 1:04 AM |
I think if you’re younger, you are less affected. As a twenty-something year old, 0°f wouldn’t stop me from going out on the weekends. I wouldn’t even check the weather. It was irrelevant.

I see these people out with just a hoodie and tennis shoes.
by Anonymous | reply 186 | December 29, 2017 1:13 AM |
I think 20° is a good cutoff. I hate anything above 65° and I am in my 60's. I am the only person on my block that will sit on the porch and watch the snow fall and I can do that for hours but it has to be above 20°

I decided to do my grocery shopping today, figuring it's better to do it now than on NYE when people would be cramming the stores buying snacks and liquor. Plus, it was lightly snowing, and lots of people go into lockdown mode when it snows.
Wow, was it dangerous. The snow turned to sleet, it got dark out and Range Rovers were blasting past me, showering my windshield with icy water, salt and sand. It was hard enough seeing the roadway with the salt and sand on it., but add in that lively wake of filth and I could barely see. There aren't any streetlights out here in non-suburbia. It's 23 F.

If anyone has a problem with ice and snow on their rooftops, pick up some "Roof Melt" tablets at Walmart or any hardware store. You toss them onto the roof, and they melt ice and snow. Not expensive, and they can help avoid costly repairs from ice and snow damage.
by Anonymous | reply 209 | December 30, 2017 11:24 PM |
r203 keep an eye on your roof. my house is 100 years old and the last heavy snowstorm a few years ago cracked one of my beams. They put a new roof on this year but didn't tell me until after it was done that my roof beams/studs are only 2x4's and are spaced 32" apart. My roof is just one long 40' length on either side. They raised the 4" sink in the beam that cracked up to 2½" but now I know I'll worry about it all the time and it looks like the other side of roof has a huge dip in it at the back. I live 100 miles south of you.

The humidity is higher, I think, because the ocean temp has been a bit higher but the average temperature has been I think about 10 degrees cooler. We had one night of sudden thundershowers night before last--first rain maybe since last winter? But don't get jealous--crime has gone way up in this formerly sleepy town and traffic is always getting worse.

Extreme cold to hit the Midwest and Northeast.
Hold me, David. I'm scared!
"'Life-threatening' Arctic blast to freeze nearly 200 million as Polar Vortex attacks U.S."
Though a fierce blast of cold air froze the central U.S. Friday, what's coming next week will be even worse:
Using words such as "life-threatening," "dangerous," "brutal," and "unprecedented," the National Weather Service is preparing us for the extreme cold that's forecast to roar into the U.S. next week.
"The coldest air of the season will plunge the upper Midwest and Great Lakes into life-threatening conditions" next week, the weather service said Friday. The cold will be most intense from Tuesday through Thursday.
And although the worst of the cold will be over the north-central region, practically the entire eastern two-thirds of the nation will see freezing temperatures, all the way down to central Florida. That's nearly 200 million people.
On Friday, the numbing cold prompted officials to close schools in several states. This included the Milwaukee public schools, Wisconsin's largest school district.
The deep freeze caused organizers of the Winter Carnival in Minnesota to cancel several events.
What's in store next week is even more ferocious: Wind chills of 55 degrees below zero are possible in parts of the upper Midwest, while actual air temperatures will dip to 30 degrees below. The wind chill, which describes the effect of wind and cold temperatures on exposed skin, can cause frostbite within minutes at those temperatures.
The Weather Channel warned that by the middle of next week, daytime highs may not rise above zero in parts of the north-central U.S. and may not rise out of the single digits in the Ohio Valley.
The frigid invasion of cold air has been called “Barney” by some forecasters. This is because forecast maps use purple to illustrate extremely cold temperatures, weather.us meteorologist Ryan Maue said.
While all-time cold temperature records aren't expected, many spots will see their lowest temperature on record for January 29th or 30th.
The cold is courtesy of our old friend the polar vortex, which is expected to become displaced from the Arctic Circle and plunge down to near the upper Great Lakes, according to AccuWeather. Meteorologist Judah Cohen of Atmospheric and Environmental Research, looking ahead to next week's forecast, said that "the polar vortex is without a doubt sitting on top of the Great Lakes."
The University of Maine’s Climate Reanalyzer notes that the temporary icy cold doesn’t disprove global warming, despite what some non-scientists may claim. On Friday, the globe as a whole was 1.08 degrees warmer average.
"Yes, it's cold in the U.S. Midwest and parts of Canada," noted meteorologist Steve Bowen of insurance firm Aon. "But, overall, the globe is still anomalously warm. Check out Alaska, Africa, Asia, and Australia."
Some good news: The intense cold won't last too long: AccuWeather said the harsh cold should ease somewhat across the eastern half of the U.S. during the first weekend of February.

Slightly colder today... 26C (79F). I'm melting. It's too hot:( I was dripping sweat just walking outside. And no, I'm not fat. It's even worse being inside, the temp here is 28C (82F). The fan is blowing, all the windows are open. It helps NOTHING. It's fun wen Americans complain about the heat, at least you guys have AC. We don't. We just have to suffer through summer:(
by Anonymous | reply 483 | June 17, 2020 2:05 PM |
Near Atlanta, at 10:15 a.m. in the middle of JUNE and it is not even up to 70 degrees yet, the high is supposed to be 80; it's too cold to have the windows open, for God's sake. It's been like this for most of the Spring, would be nice to have a cool Summer for a change.

R487 There are gays in Winnipeg?
by Anonymous | reply 488 | June 17, 2020 5:20 PM |
Of course, R488. Club 200 is the gay bar in town. Fame is a dance club that is gay friendly. There is a lgbt community centre. Gay men hang out at the nude part of Patricia Beach and at Beaconia Beach on Lake Winnipeg (though not as popular and cruisy as they were 25 years ago). Adonis and Aquarius are the bathhouses, though the latter has a lot of co-ed days.
It's a small gay community but we do exist. I'll bet cities smaller than Winterpeg have gay bars.
Where do you live, R488?
by Anonymous | reply 489 | June 17, 2020 5:39 PM |
R489 I live in a small town in Norway, a two hour drive southwest of Oslo. They're reporting 30C (86F) for tomorrow. I hate this heat. I have a headache every day. It's way too hot:(
by Anonymous | reply 490 | June 17, 2020 5:42 PM |
Oh ok. I assumed you were in Canada or the U.S., R488.
The heat is starting to get to me. It's supposed to be cooler on the weekend. I hate sweating all the time. It's hard to sleep. I could never live in hot places like Phoenix, Palm Springs, Miami, etc. though Winterpeg has a less than ideal climate -- very long, very cold winters.
I'll bet Oslo has a good gay scene.
