0C (32F) and it's FINALLY snowing! We didn't get to have a white Christmas this year since some warmer weather came in on the 23rd, all the snow we had rained away.

by Anonymousreply 164December 27, 2017 8:00 PM

❄ We have officially exceeded 100 inches of snowfall for December, sixty five of those inches falling in since Christmas Day. And it's not warming up anytime soon, and we'll be getting more snow over New Year's Weekend. It's currently 10°F. The city is virtually at a standstill.

Be careful what you wish for, r164. A White Christmas can be pretty frightful, even if the fire is so delightful .........

21 degrees, Long Island NY.

by Anonymousreply 166December 27, 2017 9:56 PM

I had to order a new winter coat. I get very hot with the coat closed, so I never really cared about whether or not my coat was open. I went to a funeral last week and was too cold in the cemetery and realized I needed a coat that closed. So I bought one from Eddie Bauer at 50% off plus an extra $10 off. It closes by zipper and by snaps, so I'm good now for the 18 degree weather and wind.

by Anonymousreply 176December 28, 2017 11:31 PM

as per my question above, is it possible that all this arctic air is because there are no more glaciers to catch/stop the winds of it.

R177, some people think this weather is because of global warming:

"A growing body of science—some of which was recently published—is finding that as there are more years with historically low sea ice levels, there is an associated uptick in wobbly jet streams."

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 182December 29, 2017 12:20 AM

thank you r182. so they think there may be a correlation between the ice melting and the cold air coming down so far. I still wonder if it is because the glaciers aren't there to catch it. The wind has to go somewhere until something stops it.

by Anonymousreply 183December 29, 2017 12:29 AM

I am reluctant to believe that a particular year or two is a trend caused by climate change. I do believe in climate change, though. I heard New England was predicted to get heavier snows, which I was fine with. But brutally cold weather, if this is a permanent change, then I think I have to move. It’s really unpleasant below, hmm, maybe 20°f.

What’s your cutoff point? But please, don’t bother telling us if it’s 40°f or above, that’s silly.

by Anonymousreply 184December 29, 2017 1:04 AM

I think if you’re younger, you are less affected. As a twenty-something year old, 0°f wouldn’t stop me from going out on the weekends. I wouldn’t even check the weather. It was irrelevant.

by Anonymousreply 185December 29, 2017 1:06 AM

I go out prepared: thermal underwear under cords; 2 pairs of socks (one thin, on thick); high-top shoes; hat; scarf.

Into the pockets of my 'parka' are: gloves, ear muffs, chap stick, mini flashlight; a couple granola bars (ya never know).

I see these people out with just a hoodie and tennis shoes.

by Anonymousreply 186December 29, 2017 1:13 AM

I think 20° is a good cutoff. I hate anything above 65° and I am in my 60's. I am the only person on my block that will sit on the porch and watch the snow fall and I can do that for hours but it has to be above 20°

by Anonymousreply 187December 29, 2017 1:29 AM

r202 we don't have venomous snakes up here. It's worth the snow.

r203 are you in Erie, or god help you Buffalo?

by Anonymousreply 204December 30, 2017 9:51 PM

I'm in Erie, r204.

We had another fourteen inches last night. And it's been snowing on and off all day. We've had at least 120-125 inches in December.

I understand how Jack Torrance felt at the overlook. And it doesn't help that I'm living in an old house that was built in 1890.

by Anonymousreply 205December 30, 2017 9:58 PM

Oh god, take care.

I hope your house is warm and your roof is clear.

by Anonymousreply 206December 30, 2017 10:17 PM

11 F, dipping to 4 F tonight (Ohio).

by Anonymousreply 207December 30, 2017 10:48 PM

I decided to do my grocery shopping today, figuring it's better to do it now than on NYE when people would be cramming the stores buying snacks and liquor. Plus, it was lightly snowing, and lots of people go into lockdown mode when it snows.

Wow, was it dangerous. The snow turned to sleet, it got dark out and Range Rovers were blasting past me, showering my windshield with icy water, salt and sand. It was hard enough seeing the roadway with the salt and sand on it., but add in that lively wake of filth and I could barely see. There aren't any streetlights out here in non-suburbia. It's 23 F.

by Anonymousreply 208December 30, 2017 11:09 PM

If anyone has a problem with ice and snow on their rooftops, pick up some "Roof Melt" tablets at Walmart or any hardware store. You toss them onto the roof, and they melt ice and snow. Not expensive, and they can help avoid costly repairs from ice and snow damage.

by Anonymousreply 209December 30, 2017 11:24 PM

r203 keep an eye on your roof. my house is 100 years old and the last heavy snowstorm a few years ago cracked one of my beams. They put a new roof on this year but didn't tell me until after it was done that my roof beams/studs are only 2x4's and are spaced 32" apart. My roof is just one long 40' length on either side. They raised the 4" sink in the beam that cracked up to 2½" but now I know I'll worry about it all the time and it looks like the other side of roof has a huge dip in it at the back. I live 100 miles south of you.

by Anonymousreply 210December 31, 2017 8:57 PM

r209 on the Walmart site there is one feedback for those tablets and it says they don't work. have you tried them?

OP, learn to phrase your posts in GOOD standard English. Examples of how you should say it include, "what is the temperature where you are located" or maybe more casually "where you are". Please don't end the sentence with AT. Now that that's out of the way, the temperature in San Diego on 5/24/2018 AT 9:30am is 60 degrees Fahrenheit. I guess that would be about 19 or 20 Celsius? R272 True, I'm fucking dying, it's so hot :( This is a time I wish I had AC. Sadly nobody in Norway has AC, we just have to suffer through heat waves, it fucking sucks. Not only that, it hasn't rained in like three weeks, which combined with high temps has caused it to get very dry. There's an extremely high chance of forest fires. Look at this table, everything above 70 is "extreme", we're up to 300 in Skien.

71 degees here in Santa Monica (as usual). Looking through this thread from the top, I realize it was much hotter here last year (2017) than this year. Last year was in the 80s and above for months. The humidity is higher, I think, because the ocean temp has been a bit higher but the average temperature has been I think about 10 degrees cooler. We had one night of sudden thundershowers night before last--first rain maybe since last winter? It's 8 degrees Fahrenheit in CT but it was around -3 this morning when I started my car. The round electric gauge in my car which shows time, temperature and the amount of gas didn't work this morning and was just a blue disc. It eventually came back when it warmed up but I was worried about an expensive repair bill.

I clicked on R336's link and the Mt. Washington summit is -30°F with a wind chill of about -80°F. You get frost in about 5 minutes at that temperature.

Extreme cold to hit the Midwest and Northeast.

Hold me, David. I'm scared!

"'Life-threatening' Arctic blast to freeze nearly 200 million as Polar Vortex attacks U.S."

Though a fierce blast of cold air froze the central U.S. Friday, what's coming next week will be even worse:

Using words such as "life-threatening," "dangerous," "brutal," and "unprecedented," the National Weather Service is preparing us for the extreme cold that's forecast to roar into the U.S. next week.

"The coldest air of the season will plunge the upper Midwest and Great Lakes into life-threatening conditions" next week, the weather service said Friday. The cold will be most intense from Tuesday through Thursday.

And although the worst of the cold will be over the north-central region, practically the entire eastern two-thirds of the nation will see freezing temperatures, all the way down to central Florida. That's nearly 200 million people.

On Friday, the numbing cold prompted officials to close schools in several states. This included the Milwaukee public schools, Wisconsin's largest school district.

The deep freeze caused organizers of the Winter Carnival in Minnesota to cancel several events.

What's in store next week is even more ferocious: Wind chills of 55 degrees below zero are possible in parts of the upper Midwest, while actual air temperatures will dip to 30 degrees below. The wind chill, which describes the effect of wind and cold temperatures on exposed skin, can cause frostbite within minutes at those temperatures.

The Weather Channel warned that by the middle of next week, daytime highs may not rise above zero in parts of the north-central U.S. and may not rise out of the single digits in the Ohio Valley.

The frigid invasion of cold air has been called “Barney” by some forecasters. This is because forecast maps use purple to illustrate extremely cold temperatures, weather.us meteorologist Ryan Maue said.

While all-time cold temperature records aren't expected, many spots will see their lowest temperature on record for January 29th or 30th.

The cold is courtesy of our old friend the polar vortex, which is expected to become displaced from the Arctic Circle and plunge down to near the upper Great Lakes, according to AccuWeather. Meteorologist Judah Cohen of Atmospheric and Environmental Research, looking ahead to next week's forecast, said that "the polar vortex is without a doubt sitting on top of the Great Lakes."

The University of Maine’s Climate Reanalyzer notes that the temporary icy cold doesn’t disprove global warming, despite what some non-scientists may claim. On Friday, the globe as a whole was 1.08 degrees warmer average.

"Yes, it's cold in the U.S. Midwest and parts of Canada," noted meteorologist Steve Bowen of insurance firm Aon. "But, overall, the globe is still anomalously warm. Check out Alaska, Africa, Asia, and Australia."

Some good news: The intense cold won't last too long: AccuWeather said the harsh cold should ease somewhat across the eastern half of the U.S. during the first weekend of February.

77°F = 25°C on the Michigan/Indiana border but it has been remarkably less humid than normal here lately. Weather has been very comfortable, but the normal humidity is to return by the weekend and the air conditioning will be running.

by Anonymousreply 480June 16, 2020 4:23 PM

54 in Winston-Salem in the afternoon in mid June! Coldest North Carolina June day in decades!

by Anonymousreply 481June 16, 2020 4:27 PM

At 8 pm (45 minutes ago), it was 94 degrees, 64 percent humidity.

by Anonymousreply 482June 16, 2020 4:45 PM

Slightly colder today... 26C (79F). I'm melting. It's too hot:( I was dripping sweat just walking outside. And no, I'm not fat. It's even worse being inside, the temp here is 28C (82F). The fan is blowing, all the windows are open. It helps NOTHING. It's fun wen Americans complain about the heat, at least you guys have AC. We don't. We just have to suffer through summer:(

by Anonymousreply 483June 17, 2020 2:05 PM

Near Atlanta, at 10:15 a.m. in the middle of JUNE and it is not even up to 70 degrees yet, the high is supposed to be 80; it's too cold to have the windows open, for God's sake. It's been like this for most of the Spring, would be nice to have a cool Summer for a change.

by Anonymousreply 484June 17, 2020 2:39 PM

Parts of North Carolina did not get out the 50s over the last two days. Some of the coldest mid June weather in NC recorded history

by Anonymousreply 485June 17, 2020 2:45 PM

R485 Can we please switch? You can get the 80s weather we have now. I'm sick of it.

by Anonymousreply 486June 17, 2020 2:47 PM

30 C / 86 F at noon

It's already too hot and humid.

by Anonymousreply 487June 17, 2020 5:09 PM

R487 There are gays in Winnipeg?

by Anonymousreply 488June 17, 2020 5:20 PM

Of course, R488. Club 200 is the gay bar in town. Fame is a dance club that is gay friendly. There is a lgbt community centre. Gay men hang out at the nude part of Patricia Beach and at Beaconia Beach on Lake Winnipeg (though not as popular and cruisy as they were 25 years ago). Adonis and Aquarius are the bathhouses, though the latter has a lot of co-ed days.

It's a small gay community but we do exist. I'll bet cities smaller than Winterpeg have gay bars.

Where do you live, R488?

by Anonymousreply 489June 17, 2020 5:39 PM

R489 I live in a small town in Norway, a two hour drive southwest of Oslo. They're reporting 30C (86F) for tomorrow. I hate this heat. I have a headache every day. It's way too hot:(

by Anonymousreply 490June 17, 2020 5:42 PM

Oh ok. I assumed you were in Canada or the U.S., R488.

The heat is starting to get to me. It's supposed to be cooler on the weekend. I hate sweating all the time. It's hard to sleep. I could never live in hot places like Phoenix, Palm Springs, Miami, etc. though Winterpeg has a less than ideal climate -- very long, very cold winters.

I'll bet Oslo has a good gay scene.

by Anonymousreply 491June 17, 2020 6:00 PM

Only 29C (84F) today. Sweat is dripping.

by Anonymousreply 492June 19, 2020 12:59 PM

Only 12 C / 54 F. A little cool for summer but better than the hot, humid 84 F two days ago.

by Anonymousreply 493June 19, 2020 3:34 PM

It’s not summer. Yet.

by Anonymousreply 494June 19, 2020 3:39 PM

by Anonymousreply 495June 19, 2020 3:44 PM

It sure felt like it a couple of days ago, R494. The grass is green, there are leaves on the trees and the Canada geese are walking around with their goslings. I ignore the calendar and say it's summer.

by Anonymousreply 500June 25, 2020 6:43 PM

55😣 We literally went from 85 to 55 in a matter of days. It's still early here though. They've actually forcasted 70 today, yay! Been in the 50s/60s for almost a week now. So sick of it. We're in July ffs. Hoping it gets warmer next week. They've forecasted rain for the weekend though. I'm starting my summer vacation on Monday.

by Anonymousreply 501July 2, 2020 5:41 AM

I’d forgotten about climate change in the pandemic!

by Anonymousreply 549December 11, 2022 8:25 AM

Think I'm exaggerating? Normal temps are in the -2 to +2 range in December. -9 is basically unheard of at this time of year (December is usually mild), especially in the coastal areas in southern Norway where I live.
