I was thinking that too, R5, that this thread is going to be way more homophobic than the "Why don't I fit in with gays" one the queens shut down, but they're too caught up in their own crazy to realize it.

When I was into the boybands as an early 2000s teen, I thought (for some bizarre reason) that NSYNC was the hottest and thought that BSB was some kind of knockoff (even tho I think they came first?). 98° was also hot as hell to me. I ranked them as:

NSYNC: 80% hot 98°: 75% hot BSB: 40% hot

Now I realize that BSB was actually at least 80% hot while NSYNC was, at best, 40% hot and I could easily see it being lowered to 20%. 98° holds steady.

Switching gears slightly but on a related note, here’s 98 Degrees. Clearly three hot guys who put some effort into their bodies, and one who clearly doesn’t give a shit. Considering the doughy one wasn’t a lead or featured vocalist, why would they even keep him? Or, why not just have all the guys wear shirts? He stands out like a sore thumb like Lance Bass, just for different reasons.

R10 NSYNC was a bunch of ugly boy band rejects formed to one group, and Ricky was the only pretty boy in Menudo and was known as such at the time. Not that much write about.

Also worth mentioning, the music. BSBs shat all over the others. And that's really saying something.

I think Howie was the unsung cutie of the BSB. He had some flavor, at least. The other guys were sort of bland, even the guy who played the ‘wild one’ character. I never got the big attraction to Kevin, everyone was saying he had a big career ahead as a model but to me he was very vacant looking, the acclaim for his features was too focused on his eyes and brows, and he was a lousy and weak singer.

Bobby Sherman was much dreamier.

The only boybands that i find every member is worth obsessing with were Boyzone and Take That.

Lance Bass had a radio show on Sirius for a few years. R7 he's married and his husband (who is not in the business and was fairly down to earth) was on the show often. In fact, Lance showed a real side to himself also. He often had a couple of friends from his hush school days in Mississippi. He spoke many times about the NSynch days and being closeted. He also showed that he's not the smartest guy when it came to certain topics. I didn't necessarily become a fan, but he wasn't as much of an affected Hollywood queen that I thought he would be.

Lance Bass is cool by me, though. At least he's not a pig and he can manage his money & his relationships like a grown-ass adult (and the same can't be said for a lot of these ex-boyband guys). He treated Danielle Fishel like a gentleman when he dated her, by all accounts. He has all the good Southern manners Justin pretends to (maybe that's what reads 'boring'?).

R46 he can sing, it's just that music in the popband genre is not geared for a bass. Higher tenors are favoured in boyband pop (something to do with R&B roots?), and since 'NSYNC never covered Barry White poor Lance was relegated to backup.

Lance isn't an impressive belter or a melodic singer like JC but at least he can produce a strong, steady tone if required. His voice is deep & quiet and his range is limited but sounds 'clean' and has clarity, indicating formative instruction he got.

Lance also sounds a lot less 'Disney' or 'bubblegum' than many of his cohorts as he came from a non-Hollywood background, which made his voice seem out of place.

I was in highschool when they were around and I would watch their videos, concert specials, interviews, look at concert photos (of course go to their concerts), etc. and I can honestly say that I had a "crush" on every single one of them at one point or another. I hope MTV replay this close to Xmas this year just to lift to some spirits. It's a little nugget from a simpler, happier time.

A boyband typically calls for one major vocal talent and one natural performer, which *NSYNC had in JC & Justin respectively. Anything more than that and members become impossible to differentiate, intimidating everyday people buying into their careers. This isn't the opera R72 honey, it's not about voices.

It is also a rule of the boyband that there need be only one beautiful guy, with the rest falling on a scale at various points from cute to ordinary. This creates an attainability fantasy for all the different fans, as a poster upthread already noted.

Again, *NSYNC already had JC to fill the 'gorgeous one' role. The others only had to be semi-cute looking, audible and confident on-stage. It mattered most of all that they all had distinctive 'personality' that fans could identify with and a dynamic that made them seem like the kind of fantasy guy-friends a typical girl would want.

We have to suppose Lance fulfilled the 'distant, shy, unattainable' guy role. Or, that of the downhome churchmouse you could invite to dinner with your folks but then later drag out to a secret Warehouse party afterward, given the way he was styled.

They couldn’t style him better I guess. He looked out of place no matter what get-up. In that respect he reminds me of the gay NKOTB guy, also tucked away in the background with gay face and less confidence.

Lance's character in ON THE LINE is 'shy' & 'lacks confidence' and he wasn't even closeted in his personal life when they shot it. The only moment of heat or emotion for his character in the script is when he gets to punch GQ in the mouth for stealing his girl. There's also a flicker of tender pathos when he's in a solo scene opposite Joey, but that's just life writing the art so it doesn't count.

The writer/director of this movie was not trying to make Lance a credible straight onscreen. His character named his office photocopier 'Lucille', for crying out loud.

Jason didn't like the terms of the group's initial contract or schedule or something, and dropped out before their first European tour and studio sessions. Justin's vocal coach suggested Lance as a temp fill-in, and the other guys took a shine to him enough to keep him.

Lance was nicknamed 'Lansten' from then on, as a nod to the guy he replaced and as way to make the band-name acronym work (justiN-chriS-joeY-lansteN-j.C).
