What is this show even about? All I've ever seen is that great big fat person and lot's of weeping.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 27, 2017 12:16 AM |
What are your thoughts regarding Justin Hartley?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 27, 2017 12:19 AM |
I'm fearing sophomore slump.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 27, 2017 1:20 AM |
Mopey and whiney.
Yup. This is definitely heading for sophomore slump.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 27, 2017 1:49 AM |
It was mopey and whiney in year one, didnt stop it from being a huge hit.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 27, 2017 1:53 AM |
Who watched this shit??
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 27, 2017 2:21 AM |

OMG. I cried.

I bawled. Great great drama.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 27, 2017 10:45 AM |
I watched four minutes of the pilot and then just said, "oh hell no". Mierda.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 27, 2017 10:59 AM |
Not since Hootie and the Blowfish have I wished a sophomore slump on something more. God, I hope this show has one.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 27, 2017 11:23 AM |
R11, you missed the ending.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 27, 2017 11:44 AM |
Still love the MIlo/Mandy section but I can't stand the older kids.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 27, 2017 11:45 AM |
Mandy is a cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 27, 2017 6:30 PM |
Milo's butt appearance again?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 27, 2017 6:39 PM |
“This Is Us” opened its second season with its highest-rated episode ever, leading Tuesday’s ratings by wide margins. The NBC show earned a 3.8 rating in adults 18-49, topping its previous best of 3.4 for the Season 1 finale. Its 12.64 million viewers is just shy of the 12.84 million for the first-season finale.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 27, 2017 6:51 PM |
Christ, for a show to get that type of ratings these days is stunning r17.
[quote]It was mopey and whiney in year one, didnt stop it from being a huge hit.
The appeal of the show was always lost on me.
Milo's ass enticed me to watch the pilot, but this definitely isn't my bag.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 27, 2017 7:54 PM |
TIU < Parenthood < Six Feet Under
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 27, 2017 8:41 PM |
So I just checked out the pilot and Milo's muscles are indeed amazing, but I couldn't get past the 20-minute mark. Too soppy and too straight for my liking.
I did like that obese character, though.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 27, 2017 8:46 PM |
I strip naked at the 25 minute mark, r20!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 27, 2017 8:48 PM |
I like the show. I love the going back in time and back to the present. The character development on this show is amazing. For instance, last season, we got to know more of William via a flashback to the '70s and meeting his mother and cousins, etc. They're not regular characters, but they were the focus of that show.
My beef with the Season 2 opener was the legitimization of the Kardashian clan. Kevin's childhood sweetheart Sophie was excited about going to LA (Kevin is an actor) and wouldn't shut up about the Kardashians, as if they were these big time celebrities. She kept going on about going to see their house and hoping to get sightings of them. It was pathetic. Aren't they just reality TV trash?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 28, 2017 2:46 PM |
The ubiquitous "Black best friend" as the third of the triplets.
That's so Jewish. You can set your watch by Jews and the myth of their intelligence.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 28, 2017 2:55 PM |
[quote]The ubiquitous "Black best friend" as the third of the triplets.
If you're referring to Randall, he's been the main focus of the show in the present time, and the actor won the Emmy for Best Actor.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 28, 2017 3:03 PM |
I like how R23 criticized Jews for their ignorance while boldly displaying hers.

Ain't seen This is Us, but that ranking cannot be true.

Are you seriously responding seriously to that poster?! Look at it. Nothing but racism and anti-semitism. FF and ignore people. We gotta fuck these nazi cockroaches.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 28, 2017 3:10 PM |
R25 I haven't done that ranking but do you really find Parenthood and Six Feet Under so bad that you're certain This Is Us has to be better than either?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 28, 2017 3:12 PM |
Once again lesbians exist in a tv universe, but not gay men. LOL!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 28, 2017 3:16 PM |
R28 Randall's bio dad is gay (or at least bi) and has/had a longtime partner played by Denis O'Hare. Both were nominated for Emmys.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 28, 2017 3:31 PM |
They made the black guy gay, which is still a stigma in the African-American community, so we'll see how they'll explore that.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 28, 2017 3:32 PM |
R27 I was referring to R19's ranking, which is why I used the quote formatting.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 28, 2017 3:34 PM |
R27 Also, if you notice, I immediately questioned the sentiment.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 28, 2017 3:35 PM |
I have to say I love it. It rings all sorts of bells for me, the adoption angle, the fat girl, the great marriage, the difficult family dynamics. I think it's a great show and that's why people have responded to it. The two standouts are Milo and Randall. Brilliant nuanced performances.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 28, 2017 3:41 PM |
R33 the adoption rings true to me, too, though I wasn't adopted as an infant. I was 8, but I came from Central America and was adopted by a white, American family and grew up in a predominantly white town. Talk about adjustment. New parents. New relatives. New friends. New country. New language. New customs. etc. That first year was a challenge, to say the least.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 28, 2017 3:48 PM |
[quote] The two standouts are Milo and Randall.
Milo is the actor's name; Randall is the character's name. The two standouts are Milo and STERLING.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 28, 2017 4:21 PM |
I saw an interview with Ron Cephas Jones (William) in which he said that Denis O'Hare would be back this season and they'd be exploring the relationship between William and Jesse.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 28, 2017 4:23 PM |
R31 I understand what ranking you were referring to and I can recognize quotations formatting pretty well, thank you.
I don't understand your somewhat nasty reply; I merely asked you why you disagree with that ranking that has This Is Us at the bottom and Six Feet Under at the top. Were you that disappointed with Six Feet Under? Or was Parenthood the one that was so bad in your opinion?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 28, 2017 4:38 PM |
I have a feeling DL hates anything that's feel-good, regardless of quality.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 28, 2017 5:49 PM |
Best line of the show. Randall's two daughters pointing out Hillary Clinton lost the election and Randall replies, "Thank you Omarosa and Stacy Dash." LOL!!
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 28, 2017 5:55 PM |
I watch it, but I don't care much for it. It's more out of habit, and I keep waiting to see how Milo dies and Mandy ends up with his best friend.
What I hated this week is how Sterling wanted to adopt a child and his wife goes along with it (although you could see she wasn't into it) up until they go meet with the adoption agency woman. *Then* she pitches a fit about not liking his plan. Passive-aggressive cunt. Like you couldn't have that conversation with your husband before you're talking to the adoption agency?

by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 28, 2017 8:57 PM |
Those aren't spoilers r43. This has already been revealed in the series.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 28, 2017 9:09 PM |
Do we think Jack (Milo) dies in the fire that closed out the premiere episode? Or was that just a teaser?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 28, 2017 9:47 PM |
I don't know. Last season, I thought he got drunk and died in a car crash, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 28, 2017 9:54 PM |
I like this show. It's sweet. And quality for a big 3 network. What do they call them now? Anyways, I didn't mean to but I counted 3 scenes where someone gets up from a table because they're upset by a conversation. If there's three scenes where someone storms off from a conversation next week I'm going to revisit describing this show as great.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 28, 2017 10:24 PM |
They just keep hopping back and forth in time like a Vonnegut novel. It'll never end. Nothing ever resolves. Even if someone dies, we get more and more of them.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | September 28, 2017 10:26 PM |

Maybe it's a family trait, like the Bravermans calling each other 'Bud(dy)'?

Chrissy Metz=Six Feet Wide
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 30, 2017 3:40 PM |
Chrissy = Six Feet Under if she doesn’t do something about her weight. The heart cannot keep carrying that around.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 30, 2017 3:57 PM |
R56 whose heart?
by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 30, 2017 4:09 PM |
Man this show to too pathetic even for the likes of me. And I actually like the first two Bridget Jones movies and cry every time I watch Love Actually!
by Anonymous | reply 58 | October 2, 2017 4:55 AM |
R58 see, I could never get the appeal of LOVE, ACTUALLY. I still cringe remembering Liam Neeson and his son re-enacting TITANIC and calling the characters by the actors' names (e.g., Kate & Leo). I also recall a reference to 9/11 which seemed out of place . The whole thing was one giant cornball, IMO.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | October 2, 2017 3:23 PM |
If that fire isn't what killed Jack, I'm not watching any more.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | October 2, 2017 4:56 PM |
The fire was an insurance scam.

Are you watching tonight?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 4, 2017 12:21 AM |
I'll let the TV warm up for an hour before the Lyle and Erik Show. Maybe I'll look at it.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | October 4, 2017 12:35 AM |
The real tragedy of this show is that we don't seen enough of Milo's rock hard ass.
I don't get why fat Kate hates her mother - or rather her younger sister in a bad wig.
I think Justin's wife beater should be more fitted on him.
Are they really going to do Justin and his sister in law having a fling?
They did capture what a sitcom taping is like. After 20 minutes, you want to go home.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | October 4, 2017 4:53 AM |
The fat chick is a bad actress and Mandy Moore isn't that great either. Is the hot guy supposed to be straight because I'm not getting that vibe?
by Anonymous | reply 65 | October 4, 2017 4:58 AM |
R65, which one is the hot guy?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | October 4, 2017 5:09 AM |
Anyone have screencaps of Justin in the diaper?
by Anonymous | reply 67 | October 4, 2017 5:56 AM |
R66, Milo, Sterling and Justin are all hot, but I think Justin counts as the hot guy on the show because we see his body the most.
Justin's engaged and has a previous marriage and child from that marriage.
I do get a big gay vibe though.
I had sex with women (okay, one girl) in college.
The next night I went out with all the guys and word had gotten around and the leader of the pack said (knowing it was me) 'who among us got laid most recently? THIS GUY (me) did!'
I'll never forget the sense of acceptance I felt.
You can all hate me but I was 20 (and a late bloomer).
But maybe that's how other guys are into their 30s and 40s; they keep fucking women in order to fit in.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | October 4, 2017 7:19 AM |
Justin in the diaper was hot. It was actually a cute scene.
I don't see Kevin and Randall's wife having an affair. That would be tacky. I preferred Kevin with the playwright last year. He and Sophie just don't have that much chemistry.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | October 5, 2017 12:04 AM |
I laughed at Kate's awful performance.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | October 5, 2017 12:46 AM |
I'm still trying to understand why Kate weighed 200 pounds at age 9. Children don't just become that fat, she must have been overfed since infancy to be a pocket whale at that age. Everyone else in that family is norm sized. What did Mandy do, force feed her lard sandwiches because she didn't want the competition?
by Anonymous | reply 71 | October 5, 2017 12:59 AM |
What a surprise? Fags hate a nice, loving, family show.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | October 5, 2017 5:23 AM |
Not as much as we hate you, R72.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | October 5, 2017 12:09 PM |
I think this week we learned that Jack was a Vietnam War veteran and probably suffers from PTSD.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | October 5, 2017 2:44 PM |
Crap show
by Anonymous | reply 75 | October 5, 2017 3:25 PM |
We knew last year that Jack was in Vietnam.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | October 5, 2017 3:57 PM |
I download this to watch, because I cannot handle commercials anymore. I wish, however, they would not use the fucking mawkish #ShareTheMoment graphic during poignant scenes. Can no one enjoy anything anymore unless they are "sharing" it? It really takes me out of the scenes. I do come to this show to be emotionally manipulated, but I look to the writing and characters to do this, not marketers.
Did not like this latest episode, but they have to move the stories along, I guess.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | October 5, 2017 4:00 PM |
R72, how retro of you. I will use a classic, too: You are a fucking asshole. But you knew that. Why would you come to a gay site and use slurs unless you were looking to be a cocksucker?
by Anonymous | reply 78 | October 5, 2017 4:02 PM |
Horrifically bad show. I can't stand the fat chick.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | October 5, 2017 4:11 PM |
It really isn't that good a show, but it isn't "horrifically bad." The thing I hate the most is the very idea that I'm spending an hour a week for 22 weeks watching something in which Mandy Moore could suddenly pop up. She brings me the "horrific."
by Anonymous | reply 80 | October 5, 2017 4:21 PM |
I think Mandy Moore should be killed off in the series finale.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | October 7, 2017 1:49 AM |
r81 the problem with this show is it doesn't matter if your character is dead... you will still have stories for seasons to come!

Ok I am watching Season 1 now.
Justin Hartley was on Michael Myers and I thought he was adorable and charming. He has an amazing body of course. Also, he as a beautiful nose and he has a nice profile, and not all that many actors have that.
He's 40 and looks great, and he's playing a 37 year old on the show. Divorced, hot a teenage daughter.
Total DILF, don't you agree?
by Anonymous | reply 85 | October 8, 2017 8:24 PM |
Michael Myers? what was I channelling? Seth Meyers.

Well that pretty boy is 40 and a daddy so.....
by Anonymous | reply 90 | October 8, 2017 9:02 PM |

Is this the current thread to talk about Season Two?
by Anonymous | reply 92 | November 5, 2017 12:24 AM |
I think I hate this show. I just finished watching it via Roku, which was very choppy. There was much more dialog in CC than in the actual scenes, and the scenes were very jumpy. I can't watch it in real time because I have a class, but I find these people so reprehensible. Maybe it's because I'm too old. I remember people hating thirtysomething when I was thirtysomething, and not understanding why. Maybe being age contemporaries of the main characters helps.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | November 5, 2017 12:28 AM |
r92 yes. This doesn't seem to be a terribly popular show with the DL.
I've got to hand it to Justin Hartley, though. He's really improved this season and he's giving strong performances.
I also notice the commercials/trailers for the Bad Moms Christmas movie are really playing up Hartley's role (and he's shirtless, which helps).
No more Y&R for him.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | November 5, 2017 12:30 AM |
It occasionally makes me cry, but in a very manipulative way.

by Anonymous | reply 98 | November 5, 2017 12:56 AM |
I'm mixed on this show. It's not horrible, but it was over-hyped last season. The only storyline I like this season is Randall and his wife taking in the foster child.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | November 5, 2017 1:27 AM |
Huh; that's the only story line i don't like; delinquent teen; instant drama!
by Anonymous | reply 100 | November 5, 2017 1:29 AM |
The ‘flashback’ scenes of Kate having a one night stand with the married man were particularly awkward. It’s like everyone in those scenes are pretending she’s not morbidly obese, including the married guy.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | November 5, 2017 1:57 AM |
Yeah, I thought it would end up being some kind of dogface sex dare, and his friends would laugh at her.

Milo plays the DILF. Woof!
by Anonymous | reply 103 | November 6, 2017 1:20 AM |

Yes. We’ve seen the show and are not blind.

Milo seems to be the most popular so they have put themselves in the position that they have to keep writing flashbacks with him

They also need to put themselves in the position of making him show his ass.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | November 14, 2017 5:43 AM |
Show blows. sappy soap shite. Only reason to watch is Justin, who is not gay and I seriously doubt he ever had the dick.
Justin started on Passions, where he was very popular. Several shows later he landed on the delicjous Revenge where he proved he can act. Great scenes with Madeline Stowe. Loved his butch interpretation off his gay character.

I, myself, did not.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | November 25, 2017 4:05 PM |
I didn't, R142. I have never rolled my eyes more over a TV show than I do this one. I should like it. I liked Parenthood. I loved thirtysomething. I loved, loved, loved A Year in the Life. But the only Pearson i can stand is Jack.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | November 25, 2017 4:14 PM |
I didn’t cry. Chrissie Metz is as good of an actress as she is a singer. I like the guy who plays her boyfriend, though.
The only present-day storylines that interest me involve Randall’s family.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | November 25, 2017 6:00 PM |
R137, for someone (Justin) who's not gay your post contains the word 'gay' twice and the word 'Passions' once.
We sure he's not?
by Anonymous | reply 146 | November 25, 2017 6:15 PM |
[quote]Milo seems to be the most popular so they have put themselves in the position that they have to keep writing flashbacks with him
No. Milo has always been the first-billed star of the show. Those aren't really "flashbacks," they're just his storyline during the time he was alive.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | November 25, 2017 8:33 PM |
I thought Milo was despised on DL.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | November 25, 2017 8:46 PM |
How’s the white guy with the yellow skin doing on the show?
by Anonymous | reply 149 | November 25, 2017 10:20 PM |
Milo and Sterling K. Brown are the best actors on the show. Chrissy Metz isn't a bad actress, but she didn't deserve an Emmy nomination last year. I think she'll get shut out of Emmy nominations in July.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | November 25, 2017 10:35 PM |
The show hasn't been as good since they killed William off. They keep trying to insert him into the stories with flashbacks but it doesn't work as well.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | November 26, 2017 3:05 AM |
Chrissy Metz is so fat its distracting. When she's on screen that's all you see. And she's not a good enough actress to overcome that
by Anonymous | reply 152 | November 26, 2017 4:28 AM |
I think they said when the show launched that Kate was going to lose weight and when I heard that I was like YIKES there's some pressure on the actress to lose some pounds.

This week's episode is one of the few I've enjoyed. I wished they could have gone into all the detail they'd've been able to if it were a daytime soap. Once a week doesn't make the same impression. How many eps a year?

It's not enough. Not with all the back and forth in time with so many characters.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | January 12, 2018 1:07 AM |
I think they have shorter seasons due to budget reasons. It probably costs a pretty penny to shoot all those flashbacks with old cars, props, and specially made clothes.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | January 12, 2018 2:17 AM |
Well, it fucks with the storytelling, r167. I don't know why people have latched on to this show the way they have. If this were Guiding Light, we'd be talking about Justin's addiction/rehab story for weeks. This is what I liked about soap opera.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | January 12, 2018 9:21 AM |
Go back to your soap opera threads, then, honey. Have another drink at the bar set next to a non-existent wall, and talk toward the camera with your back turned to the other actor, again.

I watched and really enjoyed Season1 but stopped watching. I have enough shit happening IRL, so emotional manipulation for entertainment doesn't appeal to me. R137, what season of Revenge was he in? Another show I loved, but quit watching midway through Season 2 when it got ridiculous.

R171, I agree; I thought Justin pretty much phoned in his work on Y&R in that Adam was a heavy, but Justin just played him as....Justin.
Adam's the guy who walks into a room and everyone's uneasy that he's in the room; what's he going to do next?
Justin played it so nice he gave Nick Newman a run for his money.
But he's hitting it out the park on This Is Us and he deserves and Emmy nom. If he doesn't get one it's because people think that life is too easy for him. That's too bad. He's doing a great job.

Justin Hartley is turning some terrific work this season, wasn’t too sure about him in season 1, but he’s Emmy worthy this year for sure.
Is Randall supposed to be bipolar? It seems like he jumps from one big idea to the next and Beth comes across unsure but then she goes for it. I feel like she should be putting the breaks on some of his ideas: foster child, etc. hopefully they will follow more with why Tess was hiding in Kevin’s car.
by Anonymous | reply 187 | January 24, 2018 1:41 PM |
Justin is a great actor. His work on Revenge as the gay son of Victoria also is Emmy worthy. He has been on several series starting with Passions. And how interesting he SEEMS the most successful person from the large cast of Passions. Justin is very handsome yet seems approachable, like a regular guy. Hopefully Justin will get his OWN series and ultimately movies. He's better than many male movie stars in his age range.

by Anonymous | reply 189 | January 24, 2018 2:11 PM |
So, Dad and the dog died in the fire.
Are they gonna drag that out all next season?
Funny how NO character EVER mentioned that, except adopted son having a burnt-out-house flashback when he visited his old home.
When will this be over?
I love it, but it's torturous.
by Anonymous | reply 190 | January 24, 2018 6:26 PM |
R189, I damn near burst into tears when Kate said she wasn't taking Audio home. I felt so bad for the puppy the way seemed to understand that he wasn't going home with her. Then when she DID bring him home, I DID cry! Anyone else think Jack died going back in the house for the dog? I'm guessing that's why Kate has always said his death was her fault.
Can't believe I have to wait 2 weeks for the "episode that will explain it all!" You just know the "Big Game" will go long and we'll then have to watch the trophy ceremony.
by Anonymous | reply 191 | January 24, 2018 6:30 PM |
Yes, obviously Milo/Dad went back in to save the dog and then they both died.
I know many people who have experienced such disasters. They don't go through a single DAY without bringing it up.
These are some repressed characters, and some manipulative writers and show-runners.
by Anonymous | reply 192 | January 24, 2018 6:38 PM |

I don't think they were injured in the fire. In the season 2 premiere there was scene of Kate and Randall crying in Miguel's house after the fire and Kate said she had to find Kevin to tell him that Jack was dead.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | January 25, 2018 4:00 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 207 | January 25, 2018 10:12 PM |
Am I the only one who really likes Beth? The Beth/Randall storylines are consistently strong (William, Déjà, nervous breakdown, etc.), and I like the back-and-forth between them, even when it's tense. The actors have great chemistry, IMO.
And I agree with all the posters upthread saying that Justin Hartley is turning in Emmy-worthy work this season. Kevin's downward spiral and the ensuing chaos showed Hartley has some serious acting chops that were not evident in season one.
by Anonymous | reply 208 | January 28, 2018 11:06 PM |
r209 I like Beth but I do feel Randall's stories are becoming very self righteous and most of Beth's stories are tied to Randall. I hope we see more 'solo' Beth stories.
by Anonymous | reply 209 | January 29, 2018 12:50 AM |
R208, I quite like Beth. Honestly, she has a lot of patience for a spouse, especially because it seems like Randall steam rolls past her. I’m surprised she has not seriously lost her shit on him. r209, solo Beth stories would be great. Compared to Toby, she’s under developed and the actress is good, give her more to do.

and if they keep dancing around dad's death, it'll never end.
by Anonymous | reply 220 | February 2, 2018 10:14 PM |
Actually, I think the producers were smart to stretch out the mystery of Jack's death for a season and a half -- during that time, viewers have seen (bit by bit) how his death has rippled through the lives of his family for two decades, and how it's shaped his kids.
As well, and probably more importantly, it's given viewers time to grow to love Jack and his family. We've seen what a great dad he was and how loved he was, flaws and all. Had they revealed him dying in fire early on in the series, it wouldn't have had nearly the emotional impact (for viewers) it will now.
For me, it's been like watching William through season one. I knew he likely wouldn't be alive by season's end, and I didn't know when or how (exactly) he was going to die, but I grew to love the character and cried ugly tears during the Memphis episode as a result.

want to feel better about Jack - a fictional character - dying? but this will make you feel worse.
a real-life dad died saving his son from an aqueduct in Los Angeles - the kid's only nine, so in addition to all the guilt and grief he'll feel, he'll have no dad to help him through his teen years, his young adult life, the rest of his life....
my dad died at an even younger age and it just fucks you up for life.
when a dad dies, the family either comes together like they do on This Is Us or they don't ....

by Anonymous | reply 258 | February 6, 2018 2:28 AM |
Caught up with the past 4-5 episodes over the weekend so I would be prepared to watch the post Super Bowl episode. I noticed what seems to be a continuity error.
In the 1998 scenes, Jack and Rebecca's kitchen has stainless steel appliances and black granite counter tops. Neither of those were especially common in 1998. They didn't become popular until the early 2000s. While the stainless steel appliances and black granite counter tops obviously were around 1998, they were both expensive and I've never gotten the impression that Jack and Rebecca were loaded.
Also in 1998, Jack would have been 53 years old -- he turned 36 on the day the twins were born and he died when they were 17. But they sure don't make him up to look 53. Milo is 40 years old in real life and no matter what era they set the scene, Milo looks like he's 40. Only thing that seems to change in the various eras is his facial hair.
Similarly, they don't seem to be doing much to make Rebecca look different in the various ages (aside from her wig). Mandy Moore is 33 in real life and that's what she looks like when she's in the present day scenes when she's supposed to be playing 60 years old.
But given had poor a job they do with the aging make up for Miguel (Jon Huertas), I guess Milo and Mandy are lucky they've limited the aging process to their hair.

The Deja centric episode was a bit much. I like the Deja character, but having her as the focus of the ENTIRE episode was overkill. If the Deja story had been part of an epsode that featured the family more prominently, it would have been more tolerable. As it was, the Pearsons had little more than a cameo in this episode.

by Anonymous | reply 297 | March 16, 2018 1:06 AM |
Isn't Deja going to prison for breaking the car window? She's shown that she's okay with stealing from a store. Murder is the next logical step in the progression. Randall needs to let his obsession go and enjoy the family he has.
by Anonymous | reply 298 | March 16, 2018 1:14 AM |

That's why a lot of people watch the show.

by Anonymous | reply 300 | March 16, 2018 2:08 AM |
Deja and her mom are terrible stereotypes. These characters show the writers know so little about being poor and even less about dysfunctional families. Every story abut these people is not the same. How typical to see Deja wants what Randall and his perfect family have, yet she's so damn bitter, ungrateful and resentful. This is certainly not new ground, we've seen this topic being depicted the same exact way many times before. Deja is the worst part of this show.
One would assume the writers interviewed a few social workers and others who deal with poor and dysfunctional people about their actual family dynamics. Not everyone is a scam artist, some truly want to end the cycle if dysfunction, violence, drugs and whatever else is keeping them down.
If Randall is so concerned about the poor, more focus should be on the property he bought and how he's helping the poor people in that building. Did I miss an episode, does he still own the building?
by Anonymous | reply 301 | March 16, 2018 2:18 AM |
Wendy Malick told Deja she looked like her father, Randall. Clearly Wendy had no idea Deja was a foster child. Instead of ignoring Wendy's stupid racist segment, she goes outside, then proceeds to destroy someone's windshield. Very poor writing,

by Anonymous | reply 303 | March 16, 2018 2:42 AM |
If you pay close attention to Justin he just acts very gay to me - my gaydar pings off the charts when he is on. I think Justin Hartley is gay and deeply closeted and trust me when I say it is not because I want him to be. Sterling on the other hand...

by Anonymous | reply 305 | March 16, 2018 3:02 AM |
Justin Hartley has a 16 year old with his first soap opera actress wife, Lindsay Korman, and IIRC, he just had another baby with his current soap opera wife, Chrishell Stause.
Do deeply closeted men usually have kids with two different woman. Of course, you answer would be via in-vitro blah, blah.
A lot of straight men seem gay and a lot of gay men seem super straight, sometime it's difficult to tell.

Disappointing to see almost all the flash-forwards were sad/depressing. That means next season will be one downer after another.
Toby suffering from depression a year after marrying Kate, Randall and Tess (years in the future) presumably getting ready to see "her" (Beth? Annie? Deja?) in a prison/a hospital/a cemetery.
Only Kevin and Beth's cousin en route to Vietnam (?) seemed remotely positive. Maybe Jack's brother *wasn't* killed in Vietnam, after all?

I agree the parents were right. That storyline also shows a very real life double standard in which adult men's parents' concerns about wives and girlfriends are ignored because men are always pressured into defending their wives and girlfriends even if they are messes. Kate is a total emotional mess.
by Anonymous | reply 312 | March 16, 2018 2:27 PM |
Wasn’t Kate’s massive weight gain caused by her remorse and guilt over her dad’s death? Yet in the fantasy sequences she is still hefty. They should have gotten another actress to play her in the fantasy sequences.
by Anonymous | reply 313 | March 16, 2018 2:32 PM |
What we saw at the end (depressed Toby and juvenile delinquent Deja) is the visual version of "what's the worst that can happen?" game that Randall and Kevin were playing. I doubt any of these are actually going to happen next season.
by Anonymous | reply 314 | March 16, 2018 2:41 PM |
R314, I hope you're right! (It's also a nice way for producers to get themselves out of those story ideas now if, indeed, that's what they were really planning.)
by Anonymous | reply 315 | March 16, 2018 3:29 PM |
I think some of the storylines are made up as they go along. In the finale, we learned Beth's family took in the cousin and raised her as their own. But, that didn't come up in the season premiere where Beth suggested they foster or adopt older kids instead of infants.

R306, Chrishell is not pregnant; she has not had a baby.
Personally, I think Justin pings quite a bit.
He and Thad Luckinbill presented at the Daytime Emmys on year back in Justin's PASSIONS days. Mario Cantone did a wrap up on The View on the Monday after and he was pretty funny, calling the two hotties gay porn stars.
Plenty of gay men get married and have kids. And some even get married again.
Look at that ex-governor of NJ; wed twice. Two daughters. Gay American.
Do I think every guy is gay? No. (I, too, think Sterling is far hotter.) But if I had to guess on Justin, I'd say yeah.
Too bad. He's a sweetheart, I'm sure.

I didn't like the fact that the fertility doctor changed her tune so easily. At first, when she rejected Kate and Toby, I thought, "Oh, interesting, the show is going for some hard truths...", only to have them backpedal before the end of the hour.
Though, I guess now we know how/why Toby is off his meds.
by Anonymous | reply 327 | September 26, 2018 9:23 PM |
I was half paying attention, what happened when they went ahead in time? The overweight woman Kate wasn't at home, was she in the hospital? Then her brother, the black brother, Randall, called her husband Toby to come see her.
I gather Milo Ventimiglia is going to continue on the series, especially as now they're going to continue showing all the character's backstories, as well as going ahead in time.
I suspect many here cannot get into this series because there are no gay characters, if the hot white brother was gay, I'm sure most of the complainers would be on board.
This a great show, a little soppy at times, but the acting is great.

[quote]Randall's biological father, William, was gay. However, William died at the end of the first season.
I watch the series, I forgot about William being gay. I do remember when his lover spent time with him before he died. Wasn't he actually bisexual? Didn't he tell Randall he liked men and women?
I see a lot of whiners at DL, especially in these TV series threads complaining that lots of shows don't have enough or any gay characters. Then, if there is a gay character, the whiners will complain the character is "too stereotypical", for some people there's no winning, just whining.
This series can be very sappy, but the acting is great and there's diversity, so, viewers sure cannot complain about lack of diversity.

by Anonymous | reply 340 | September 27, 2018 3:07 AM |
The first episode of the new season was a disappointment. I know that they made Deja a regular. but her story was more than played out last season. There's nothing new or interesting to tell about her. It's boring to keep rehashing that she had a hard life and is still troubled. The hooking up between Kevin and the sister is just silly contrivance. Jack and the wife's first date was the only redeeming part.
[quote]I didn't like the fact that the fertility doctor changed her tune so easily. At first, when she rejected Kate and Toby, I thought, "Oh, interesting, the show is going for some hard truths...", only to have them backpedal before the end of the hour.
I agree. It was absurd manipulation to change the outcome. Rather than having Kate in a realistic situation, they made it so that she only had to endure being sad for a short time before being reassured that she could keep the weight and still get what a normal sized person could have. It would have been a better story for her to have to choose between having a baby or having her regular buffet.

It's sort of an entertaining trainwreck for me. I like the scenes/stories set in the past. The problem for me is in the present day storylines characters like Kate and Randall rarely own up to their flaws. Kevin is the only likable character in the present day. Randall's storyline of buying that apartment building and fixing up is pretty awful and shows that he's a sanctimonious blowhard.

A wealthy person actually giving back to their community is a blowhard? Who are you, Trump? Taking down actual good people?
Randall knows he's blessed with intelligence, talent, a great family and a job he loves, why not try to help others? Plus, isn't the building the same one his biological father lived in? So there's that connection.

by Anonymous | reply 375 | November 30, 2018 10:04 PM |
That's what I thought, too, r375. But now we find out Griffin Dunne is playing present-day Nicky. Bummer.
by Anonymous | reply 376 | November 30, 2018 10:08 PM |
Well, to be fair R376, trying to convincingly "age" Michael Angarano via makeup into someone in his late-50s/early-60s would have been really difficult and probably cringe-worthy.
by Anonymous | reply 377 | November 30, 2018 11:02 PM |
They've done it with everyone else, r377, including Mandy Moore.
by Anonymous | reply 378 | November 30, 2018 11:18 PM |
Yes, but it's not convincing, either. Mandy Moore *looks* like she's wearing bad aging makeup. And I think it would have been even harder, given Angarano's voice and baby face (he looks 16)... especially since his character is presumably going to play a more significant role in the present-day timeline than Rebecca does.
Kevin (and, I would guess, Randall and Kate) will be looking to Nicky to fill some kind of paternal/Jack void, and no amount of makeup would have had audiences buying Michael Angarano as a father figure to Sterling K. Brown or Justin Hartley or Chrissy Metz.
By contrast, the majority of Rebecca's story is told in the past (so Mandy Moore plays her age); in the present-day timeline, she only appears on occasion.
Griffin Dunne is the better choice.
by Anonymous | reply 379 | December 1, 2018 12:05 AM |
Then why the whining about Angarano = metaphorical death only, r379?
by Anonymous | reply 380 | December 1, 2018 12:07 AM |
No whining -- just pointing out that I suspected the character would be more significant, narratively, than just a passing mention, and have a longer stay on the show than just a three-episode storyline set in Vietnam because they cast a name actor in the role. AND made such a big deal about it when he was cast.
They will obviously be following the character for many years post-Vietnam (in flashbacks): what happened? where did he go? how did he wind up living in a trailer? etc., which means he wouldn't "die."
So, Angarano will still be around in plenty of episodes as young(er) Nicky, just not as "old Nicky."
by Anonymous | reply 381 | December 1, 2018 12:17 AM |
I think Mandy Moore is a better actress as the older Mom than her younger self. She always seems tired and exhausted by life. Her younger, "real" age Mom isn't that convincing.

When did Kevin get a Black girlfriend?
by Anonymous | reply 383 | December 2, 2018 12:36 AM |

[quote]Griffin Dunne is the better choice.
Really? He looks NOTHING like Michael Angarano.
How about these casting people do their fucking jobs and hire an older performer who resembles the younger performer? I see this all time in TV shows and in films. Relatives usually never resemble each other and the older versions of characters rarely resemble each other.
by Anonymous | reply 385 | December 2, 2018 1:34 AM |
This third season is a turd. I'm not coming back for season 4.
by Anonymous | reply 386 | December 2, 2018 9:25 PM |
I skipped the "Milo Goes to Vietnam" episode completely based on the previews. Five episodes later, they are still milking that way too much information storyline.
DEAR GOD MAKE IT STOP!!
by Anonymous | reply 387 | December 3, 2018 3:35 AM |
[quote]Really? He looks NOTHING like Michael Angarano.
I said the "better choice" (between GD and having Angarano made up to look older), not the "perfect" choice. Obviously, it would have been great if the casting team could have found a strong actor of the right age, who also happens to look like Angarano... but, let's face it, that's needle-in-the-haystack tough and could have taken forever.
Resemblance aside, GD will be a more convincing 50/60something than Angarano ever would, for the reasons I cited earlier.

OMG Justin Hartley the Bad Moms Christmas he plays a stripper with a huge cock who has his balls and taint waxed. He looks HAWT

by Anonymous | reply 392 | January 26, 2019 12:30 AM |
I'm watching mainly so when other people at the office talk about it I can chime in. But to me they can't get the charm of the first season back.
by Anonymous | reply 393 | January 26, 2019 4:56 AM |
Yep. But the latest episode, with Nicky's story finally revealed, was good. I shed a few tears when they showed young Nicky dreaming of becoming a surgeon and having money to buy nice houses for him and his brother, and the stark reality of Nicky living in a rundown trailer.
by Anonymous | reply 394 | January 26, 2019 6:42 PM |
^^ Agreed. And I thought they did a convincing job making Griffin Dunne the older Michael Angarano.
I also wonder what the endgame is for that character (in the minds of the producers). Will he be integrated into the Pearson family somehow, or just appear on a handful of episodes and then ride off into the night?
by Anonymous | reply 395 | January 26, 2019 6:53 PM |
[quote] I thought they did a convincing job making Griffin Dunne the older Michael Angarano
Yes. Griffin's demeanor and body language were totally reminiscent of the other actor who portrayed young Nicky. Excellent work.
[quote] Will he be integrated into the Pearson family somehow, or just appear on a handful of episodes and then ride off into the night?
I think it will be only a handful of episodes.
I thought Jack was too harsh in cutting all contact with Nicky. Wow.
by Anonymous | reply 396 | January 26, 2019 7:17 PM |
Nicky seems too far gone to be able to trust to live with Randall's family and even though Kevin wants to help him I don't think Nicky wants help, he just wants to keep drinking.
by Anonymous | reply 397 | January 26, 2019 9:54 PM |
Nicky is broken and Kevin wants to fix him.

Does this show make you cry? Is it on tonight?
by Anonymous | reply 399 | January 30, 2019 1:50 AM |
Ellen's show is dropping in the ratings so NBC is forcing a full night of primetime of her ridiculous show down our throats. I watched the ABC comedy shows tonight, and will tune in for a new TIU episode next week.

Boring. Mandy Moore is okay as the younger Rebecca but sucks as the older mom
by Anonymous | reply 407 | February 13, 2019 2:22 AM |
Griffin Dunne was pretty good as the disturbed Vietnam vet drunk.
Randall and Kate going to the Indian family's house where their old home once stood, was kind of weird. Honestly, not many people would allow two random strangers to enter their home or apartment. I sure wouldn't.
by Anonymous | reply 408 | February 13, 2019 8:43 PM |
Randall has gotten irritating as shit, wish his wife would have dumped him
by Anonymous | reply 409 | February 14, 2019 3:53 AM |
Griffin Dunne did an excellent job as old, broken Nicky. It was very touching. Kevin is the best. The other Pearsons are annoying as fuck.
I liked how the Nicky storyline ended realistically, with Nicky still clinging to his damaged ways, even if there is a promise of change in the futur. It would be stupid to have him find love & acceptance with the long lost aand move in with them. But damn, it was hard to watch.

More like late 60s/early 70s. Jack was born in 1944; Nicky is just a few years younger.

Bump for new episode

Show is on a decline.
Hated the Vietnam stuff — don’t care about Jack’s brother. Kate is having ANOTHER meltdown over her baby. I’m over it. Don’t care. Kevin is drinking AGAIN. Randall is AGAIN telling Beth to take a back seat with her pursuit of dreams.
The rut is real.

Season 1 - A+
Season 2 - B-
Season 3 - D

Last season there were comments online how the Deja-centered episode was the least favorite because most of the cast wasn't in it. But at least it had Pam Grier and a couple good music montages.
by Anonymous | reply 419 | March 7, 2019 10:05 PM |
Deja looks way older then junior high. I love the 2 daughters but sick of Randall and Beth and never liked Deja.

Deja is a stereotype, the type of rebellious angry sullen teenager we've seen so many times before.

The best part of that episode was when the cop evicted Deja and her mom to "Darkest Light" by Jono Mccleery.

I thought the season finale was a dud, and then they gave us Mandy Moore on her death bed! It made it a little better.
by Anonymous | reply 427 | April 4, 2019 2:44 AM |
Mandy's character isn't dying any time soon. Before this last season started the performers did announce that this season would be spanning different decades and also going in the future. Obviously next season, Mandy's character will still be alive. Didn't you notice how grey Randall's hair was?
In the future scene, I couldn't figure who the little boy was, was that Kate's kid? I thought she had a girl or she actually has another baby?!
by Anonymous | reply 428 | April 4, 2019 8:23 PM |
The little boy running around is Kevin's future kid. Clearly he waits a while to be a dad, and since the kid is white, it seems that he and the black girlfriend don't rekindle their love. Sad, she was hot.

The episodes from the first and second season were not all great, but each one would have a good scene or moment that made the show seem worth watching.
The third season doesn't have the same engaging quality.
by Anonymous | reply 434 | April 5, 2019 3:52 AM |
I actually thought the finale saved the season -- loved the Beth/dance studio reveal, Déjà's speech, Kevin's speech to Tess, etc. And the last five minutes were great, IMO.
Also, I thought for sure Kate finding Rebecca's notebook in the PICU would reveal that Rebecca was already "forgetting" things and having to write them down. I thought Kate would flip through all the instructions for baby Jack and then find that Rebecca had also written down notes on simple things that would not require notes (e.g., how to make coffee, how to find her way home, etc.), hinting at her early Alzheimer's.
by Anonymous | reply 435 | April 6, 2019 1:14 AM |
I still really like the show and look forward to it every week. The girl playing Deja did a great job with her big scene, and Justin Hartley continues to impress.

Sorry but I disagree with Justin being impressive. He’s one note. The only episode he was good in was his solo one last season. Other than that he acts like he’s on a daytime soap.
by Anonymous | reply 439 | April 6, 2019 4:35 AM |
Well, Justin's real life wife is/was on a daytime soap! Perhaps he gets his acting inspiration from her. She's a terrible actress! She brings new meaning to words 'wooden acting'.
by Anonymous | reply 440 | April 6, 2019 8:22 AM |
Justin doesn't need inspiration from his wife. he was on a daytime soap himself.
by Anonymous | reply 441 | April 6, 2019 10:11 AM |
I hope Beth and Randall go through with moving to Philadelphia. It's the only thing that can de-idiocize that storyline.

One of Randall's daughters identifies as a baby dyke now. The flash forward scene was a bit jarring imo.
