Gordon Thomson who played Adam Carrington on Dynasty comes out.
I don't even remember him.

That is such OLD NEWS cause he pinged off the scales, just wondering what took him so long as he is pushing 60!
In the heyday 80s his companion was fag hag actress Linda Thorson (Julia OLTL) so that was a dead giveaway back in the 80s.

Gordon Thompson takes a shot at Matthew Bomer
Thomson says that out actor Matt Bomer, who he thinks is extraordinarily good-looking and talented, has the latitude to be open “because he has a rich, successful husband. He doesn’t need his work to live,” as Thomson did and still does.

[quote]“When I was growing up it [homosexuality] was a crime, and then classified as a mental illness. It was not until Pierre Trudeau was prime minister of Canada when I was 23, 24 years old, did it cease being a crime, and it was not until I was nearly 30 that it stopped being classified as a mental illness in the U.S. So you’re dealing with that. And the shame, the breathtaking lack of self-esteem, has only just begun to seep out of my soul.”
I find this to be a very thoughtful quote although I know it'll be bashed on DL.

He couldn't exactly come out during the show because that's when the whole AIDS thing blew up. Read one of Joan Collins's autobiographies in which she talks about the paranoia and hysteria when Linda Evans had to do a kissing scene with guest star Rock Hudson. Back then, people thought you could get AIDS from a kiss or even using the same hairbrush.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 25, 2017 2:11 PM |
Before we talked about his sexuality, this reporter had asked Thomson what he made of Steven’s nine years of gay-one-minute, straight-the-next oscillating sexuality. It was both a radical prime-time character, and a puzzling, inconsistently written one. “I thought it was bullshit,” Thomson says. “At the time, the AIDS crisis had a lot to do with pressure on the network. I know that Al Corley quit because he felt they were not allowing him to play the part honestly. And they weren’t. “I was very impressed to hear him say that as Steven when he met his boyfriend they would only allow them to shake hands. He left the show because he thought that was crap, and of course it was.
.....
“Richard Chamberlain (Dr. Kildare, The Thorn Birds), who I know very slightly, had what I think was the right attitude to it. If you look like a leading man, why bother coming out? You don’t have to. The fact is half your audience is women and most of those women are straight, and this is who you are playing to especially with a show like Dynasty, or a soap opera. “You’re also a source of fantasy. Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi are wonderful people, but pardon me, how many audience members fantasize about fucking either one of them? Really. It had a lot to do with what you looked like, I’m afraid.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 25, 2017 2:25 PM |
However much he has come to terms with his sexuality, Thomson says, a residue of shame will remain part of who he is. “I am OK, but what has changed about me inside is not enough, and never will be because of my background. I went to private school. My father went there. He was an absolute dishonorable cunt, not a nice man. The school has a really restrictive, all-boys atmosphere.
“I didn’t have any sexual sense until I was 12 or 13. My older brother recently told me when he had his first wet dream he thought, ‘What is wrong with me?’ Nobody had told him, he thought, ‘What is this stuff?’ Hopefully parenting has improved.”
I ask Thomson if he has ever had a boyfriend. “I did have a partner, though not successfully—sadly, ultimately, because of my lack of self-esteem,” he replies.
...
I ask if Thomson thinks Hollywood still has “a closet problem”; is it still a place where actors are reticent about coming out? “Without question, absolutely,” says Thomson, and gives the example of a show he recently shot, playing the father of the hero character. “The ‘vibe’ on that set—sorry I hate that word but that’s what it was—was so heterosexual. I didn’t want to say, ‘Guess what everybody, the guy playing the father is gay.’ If I had there would have been a slight shift away which I wasn’t ready to deal with.”

Joan inadvertantly outed him years ago.
She gave an interview about Dynasty and was talking about him joining the cast. She said (I'm paraphrasing): Oh he was so handsome, all the women fancied him, but of course no-one stood a chance because he's ...[sudden stop] er... was already in a relationship [looks around furtively, change subject].
It's on youtube somewhere.

'm not shock at all. I remember Nancy Lee Grahn saying that out of the three actors who played Mason on Santa Barbra only one was straight. Terry Lester, Gordon Thomson and Lane Davies. Well she dated Lane so it was not hard to figure out who was gay. OTT: I remember it being in the Star magazines. I could be wrong but I do remember reading it, she said at the time it was a joke.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 25, 2017 4:58 PM |
Sad man. Agree that people have to come out in their own time.
But Ian McKellan is his peer (at 78, he is only six years older) .......... Ian came out around thirty years ago and his career is really not too shabby at all.
If Gordon got the better looks, Ian got more talent.
Thomson's sexuality is no big surprise. Glad he is still getting some work, but he was always an overacting weak link on Dynasty with the same story over and over ..........jealous of Jeff, jealous of Stephen, jealous of Blake, etc ..............and he was paired with the worst female characters ..........Kirby, Claudia, Dana.
I can't wait to break out the popcorn for the Dynasty reboot. I'm expecting shit, so won't be too disappointed. Gordon sounds jealous he wasn't asked to appear. He could've played Joseph this time around.

Geez, so many of you see coming out as a black and white issue. Go easy on the guy. Not everyone is able to admit to the world or themselves that they're gay, or lives in a gay ghetto where it's easier to be yourself. The media makes it seem so easy, but for those of us from conservative backgrounds, it's still a difficult issue to deal with. It has little to do with cowardice.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | September 25, 2017 5:59 PM |
If everyone "came out in their own time", we'd still be getting lobotomized. Brave people came out and took the risks. Some TV guy worrying about his 6 figure salary is hardly making a choice based on what's possible, just on his own greed.

Refresh my memory ---- did Dana (Adam's wife, played by Leann Hunley) appear in the Dynasty reunion with the recast Adam ??
Gordon is all sour grapes about the reboot because it isn't a continuation of the original where geezer Gordon can be the governor of Colorado, while the babies and kid of the original series are cast as the next generation.
They tried that with both the Dallas and Melrose place reboots, with short term results. If the new Dynasty lasts a season or two, that is really no worse than those two reboots.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | September 25, 2017 7:37 PM |
Gordon can play Angela Channing in the Falcon Crest reboot.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | September 25, 2017 8:48 PM |
Isn't it ironic he played Adam who got to sneer at gay Steven? Those who didn't live through those repressive times wouldn't really understand what he's talking about. Back then anyone can spew hate about gay people with near impunity. Straight allies were not a real force back then. That's the kind of environment the deplorables are dying to bring back.

So a lot of the comments on this thread are exactly why Famous men who are Closeted take so long to come out.
I have never read a thread on Datalounge where a famous person coming out isn't ripped apart by half the thread.
They didn't come out soon enough. They weren't good looking enough. They were an embarrassment. They never said enough. They weren't masculine enough. They are too bitter. They are hiding behind their wealth. They should have come out at 18 and been straight acting, a football jock , the perfect Gay candidate.
You know what ,he didn't have to come out at all. He doesn't owe the Gay world a cent and given the hate he has received here, perhaps it is a surprise to be on reply 61 when he is so disliked.
Did you have the perfect coming out? Did everyone say omg you are so straight and here you are gay leading man at 18 and no one cares and everyone loves you and the Gay world loves you and we are living in a word of AIDS and Ronald Reagan and yet your career is going from strength to strength?

R58 no LeAnn Hunley as Dana on the reunion movie. The reunion sucked partly due to Thomson not being in it. Thomson sued Aaron Spelling because he wasn’t able to do the reunion due to the scheduling with the soap he was doing Santa Barbara at the time.
He was great on Dynasty and had a dark almost unhinged quality to Adam especially in his first years on the show.
Glad he came out. Wish him the best.

That is good and noble. Why didn't you come out before seeing someone bullied? Would you have come out if you hadn't seen someone bullied?
You did the right thing.
But you are not an actor on a TV show , who is not known for their acting but their looks,at a time when the most major Movie actor came out when he was dying of AIDS , was Rock Hudson. The reaction to his death put famous actors in the closet for years after.
The fact you are on a gossip site discussing people's sexuality and a thread discussing a Dynasty actor doesnt exactly imbue me with a sense that all of your life decisions are pure of heart. So give the guy a break.

No, r78, the blind I read made it clear it was Gordon Thomson, party on a yacht, blowjobs for all.
Antony Hamilton was the whoriest whore who ever whored in WeHo. When the acting work got sparse - as it often did for him between his "hits" of Cover Up and Mission Impossible, he would sell that well-used ass. He could frequently be seen trolling Sweetzer and SM Blvd, and wasn't above being a paid street pick-up. He was a party boy, and I've no doubt he treated himself to being the pass-around bottom at a birthday gangbang, but so did Gordon Thomson. It was THE way to celebrate birthdays in the early-mid 1980s in WeHo.

The first time I saw him in anything was some Canadian movie he did with Don Stroud where he played a fey obviously gay guy who was in love with this guy he was traveling across country with. The next was on Ryan's Hope and lol at the comment about the Sarcophagus attracting him more than Faith Coledrige! Now I'm picturing Nancy Addison's Cleopatra wig!

Ha! Good for you. He could have at least rented a room if he didn't want to take you home.
I used to belong to the Sports Connection back when it was the Beverly Hills (adjacent) Health Club (mid-70s). I guess it has always been a hotbed of closeted gay actors. This is where you'd see the likes of Travolta, Falk, and DeLuise (he didn't work out...) and where Travolta picked up his first scandalous trick -- Paul Baressi.

Watching him on Dynasty, he did ping to me. But I was struggling with my own closet issues as a teen. I thought Thomson was an intense little hottie in his Dynasty role. His stare could bore holes through steel. I used to want him to bore through my holes.
Give him a break already. Reagan's conservative 80's kept everybody in the closet. Or the AIDS did.

R99 I finished college and went to Law School, and subsequently worked as a civil rights attorney. So, yes, it did. the kid who I came out to support didn't fare as well. He ended up moving away and getting married, and died in a drunken motorcycle accident a few years later.
But, you know, TV stars lives matter more, apparently.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | September 26, 2017 1:58 PM |
R119 And there were people who came out during that period, specifically too help others. So by "giving him a break" you mean making excuses for him.

I remember when Miriam Margolyes came out she also mentioned her still struggling with her sexual identity and having self loathing issues.

In the 80s entertainment was so camp. Gordon practically twirled his (invisible) moustache in every scene he was in. Remember the time Adam slowly poisoned Jeff by painting his office with some toxic paint (which caused Jeff to violently lash out at Fallon)?
by Anonymous | reply 124 | September 26, 2017 2:04 PM |
Well apparently r120 you are as bitter as Gordon for all your nobility and here you are on a thread about a Dynasty actor telling us all how pathetic it all is , while you are here as well? I mean are you here just got to tell us how bad he is and how virtuous you are ?
Don't get me wrong. What you did was brave. But you weren't walking in Gordon's shoes. Why are you so judgemental? How many stars have come out from the 80s? He is not an actor like Ian Mckellan. He was a soap star. He is also, I imagine the tip of the iceberg of who is still not out.
It was not only stars who found it hard to come out from that era, it is also Agents and Studios who don't want them to come out. It still happens now . Gordon is the minority who have come out.
Then why are you so unforgiving, while being on a thread about him?
by Anonymous | reply 125 | September 26, 2017 2:14 PM |
How rich do you think Gordon Thomson is these days? When do you think he last got a big cheque?
by Anonymous | reply 126 | September 26, 2017 2:24 PM |
I believe that everyone should come out in their own time and in their own way. It doesn't matter if you are a celebrity or some random person. What pisses me off is when celebrities come out, especially when they come out at the safest time possible, and are rewarded for it with GLAAD Awards and invitations to benefits and galas. Anderson Cooper was no hero. He was trying to sell books or something and did it in a cheesy way. Guys like Matt Bomer and Colton Haynes with leading man good looks, they played the game for a while, but still managed to come out at a time that could have serious impact on their careers. Gordon Thomson comes out. Yay. Good for him. Live your truth brother. But why publicly come out now? Who are you trying to impress?
by Anonymous | reply 127 | September 26, 2017 2:29 PM |
R125 I'm not bitter, I'm just not an enabler. I'm not a pathetic sycophant defending some D-list has been who didn't come out until 2017.

What about the woman your HS friend married? Did you feel sorry for her? Did she know her husband was gay?
We can look on your old HS mate as a victim, but we could also argue he made a victim of his wife if she thought he was straight. Did he go off and fuck men? Was his wife exposed to STDs?
Did Gordon Thomson do any of that to a woman? Maybe, though it seems not. So he's better than your friend in one respect...
by Anonymous | reply 129 | September 26, 2017 2:30 PM |
Remember Michael Nader who played Dex? Don't know if he is bi or straight but he pinged to me as well. His fall from grace after Dynasty was embarrassing with drug arrests and godknowswhatelse. This is an interesting article about the early Malibu surfers, of which he was one, and the sad but rich life he led back then.
P.S. Grant Show is playing Blake Carrington on the new Dynasty remake.

by Anonymous | reply 131 | September 26, 2017 2:32 PM |
While Gordon Thomson did not have a spectacular career post Dynasty, had he come out, he would have given up any chance of being cast as a leading man or romantic lead. I'm sure his pay for Dynasty was good for the time but it sure wasn't enough to last a life time. If he was out, he never would have gotten those soap roles. It's very easy to tell other people how they should live their lives. Those brave people who did come out during those times should be applauded for leading the way but not everyone has that courage. Of course, had he come out in the 00's, his career might have benefitted from the exposure.

Mr. Less than Civil, have you had any rewarding intimate relationships, specifically romantic ones? I wonder how things panned out for you after your brave choices. Is your family life a bust (all remained evangelicals?). There's a bitterness in your comments that seems disproportionate.

I read the full article. Interesting read. He's very candid. He confirms that Joan Collins did not like Linda Evans because she was actually jealous of how much the cast and fans adored Linda when Joan thought she was the better actress. He says Joan was the better actress (duh) but that Joan was just a B-list British brunette (ouch, but true).
He says he thinks John Forsythe insisted that Blake and Krystle remain faithful to each other because Forsythe was in love with Linda, whether he knew it consciously or not. He was appalled at how the producers wrote Steven and applauds Al Corley for walking off the show because of it. He says why open a can of worms with the gay storyline if you can't deal with it? And my favorite--When presenting the storyline about aliens kidnapping Fallon, played then by Emma Sams, Esther Shapiro said she'd fire the first person who laughed. He says that alien storyline was the death knell for Dynasty.
I feel sad for someone like him. He admits he is homophobic and harbors deep shame about being gay. Why not work with someone to get beyond that? On the plus side, he does look damn good for 72 years old.

The saddest thing about virtuous people must be the loneliness.
This wasn't a thread about how virtuous Gay people can be , even though it has become a list of your achievements.
You groan about discussing a D list actor, yet here you are on a Gay gossip thread about a D Gay list celebrity. So I am thinking your disconnect is real.
You should do good cause that is what is right for all of us. But I don't know what is sadder , a bitter actor coming out later in life or a guy telling us how virtuous he is on a thread about said actor, while telling everyone he is better than said actor.
No one has to tell you what they have done for the Gay community. This is not a job interview for canonisation, it is a gossip site.

If you were not around in the 1980s, you really shouldn't comment on Gordon's plight. If he did come out as openly gay, the network simply would have written the character off the show, and Blake Carrington would have discovered he had a long lost son that would have picked up Adam's storylines. Gordon is from that generation that is damaged goods. That interview is just being honest about what his situation was. Different people handle things in different ways. The 80s were a AWFUL time for gay men. Most of us, myself included were just trying to survive, working behind the scenes to change things and taking care of sick friends. Most of us didn't have the luxury to put our lives, opinions, lovers out there. You would get fired, lose your apartment, and many lost their families. Violence against gays was VERY real. Discrimination was legal and real. Most people had to lay low. People who didn't live it don't understand. Not everywhere was San Franscisco, New York or L.A............

R187, in the 80s most people in the mid west were clueless and if they suspected they tended to give the benefit of the doubt. Fraus would not accept a gay man as a romantic lead. This is 1982-87 or whenever Dynasty was on, not2017. Rock Hudson wasn't even out until he became very sick. Theres no way Gordon could have announced he was queer and still kept his job on network TV.
by Anonymous | reply 190 | September 28, 2017 2:57 AM |
Dynasty was a Regan era baby. Blake was disgusted his son was gay and the son tried to commit suicide because he was gay, then Blake killed his son's gay boyfriend by accident, then his gay son got drunk and somehow did it with a woman, then his gay son married another woman.
There were more marys on that show IRL but one gay son who was turned straight. A Reagan miracle...and of course not one mention of aids.

I guffawed when I saw the picture at R29.
I used to see Gordon once or twice a week, when I worked at Trader Joe's...... and I swear, that is EXACTLY how he was dressed nearly every time I saw him!! White tee, denim overshirt, a little scarf.....with a white panama hat. HA! (usually with black lounge/sweat pants). If it was chilly, he wore his trusty brown corduroy blazer with suede elbow patches.
Those of us who knew him thought it was a little odd/quirky (didn't he own any other clothes?). We kinda joked that it was his I-don't-give-a-shit, old-man "uniform" (for schlepping on errands/to the market).
He was very friendly to us -- knew most of the crewmembers by name. Some of us, of a certain age "knew" who he was -- either from Dynasty or Santa Barbara. He enjoyed that. The millennials had no idea -- they just thought he was that nice older gay man, who wore the blue shirt, scarf & Panama hat.
Talking to him, I learned that he played a year or two college football in Canada -- I think he was a wide receiver or tight end (no pun intended). He had back & knee surgery in recent years.....he walks like someone who has played college football.
I'm quite fond of him.....The bitchy/self-loathing quality is unsurprising to me. If you didn't grow up in the 70s or 80s, you don't know what it was like for gay men, then, and need to STFU.
