There was an interesting tv production of "A Streetcar Named Desire", where he of course played Stanley. I thought he was pretty good. He did seem like an "ape" as Blanche called him, a big, hairy, hot ape.

by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 23, 2017 8:57 PM |
He was quite appealing and surprisingly effective in DL Fave FOLLIES! on Broadway back 10 or 15 years ago...
Blythe (Bumping Into Chorus Boys) Danner and Gregory (Did The Check Clear?) Harrison were a bit blah as Phyllis and Ben...
But Treat and (especially) Judith Ivey definitely brought the manic craziness to Buddy and Sally. Very well cast.
His "The Right Girl" was staged horrendously, but he managed to make it work (he literally threw tumblers at the brick wall throughout it).
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 24, 2017 12:44 AM |
Please don't use an exclamation point with FOLLIES r34. It makes it sound so......cheap. I was trying to find a youtube clip of him but couldn't. I remember there being vids of Who's That Woman? and Ivey's Losing My Mind. I don't know if the Roundabout clips have been removed or what. The only two things I found special about that production were Polly Bergen and the original Laurey as Heidi. Oh, and Betty Garrett. I couldn't wear pink for the next two years.....
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 24, 2017 2:09 AM |
Marni Nixon was better than Joan Roberts, who left early and was rightly replaced. Nice gesture, though.
Polly Bergen was sublime (controversial backphrasing included).
...and DL Fave FOLLIES! gets a exclamation point like it or not, toots.

R7, I read that book in college; the one that Dern/Williams movie is based on.
She sees him the night before at a movie or something and the next day family goes off and she's alone in the house; Treat's character shows up and he won't come in the door but he easily could.
My take on it was that she fantasized him being there and was, in her head, trying to think what it would be like to have sex with him.
A humanities professor in college shot my theory down, but I still think it's correct.
Why wouldn't he just come in and fuck her brains out?
by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 27, 2017 5:10 AM |
I remember seeing him in the movie of HAIR - and completely falling for him. He was good looking, smart, had swagger and charisma - a fatal combination.
Was always surprised he wasn't a bigger name in Hollywood - but it's always a game of snakes & ladders there - you never know who's gonna rise to the top of the heap. He might have been a complete ass. Or maybe he wouldn't put out for the right people? Or maybe the films he was in just never gave him the critical mass to move up the ladder...
Anyway - still think he's great! Sigh...

We had a $1 movie theatre in West Palm Beach, that doubled as Comedy shows on Fridays and Saturdays. Went to see Hair on a Monday. Went back every night till Thursday! Bought a poor quality DVD years back. Hair was fabulous, and showed Treats fine ass in the skinny dipping scene. Also, my favorite performance in the Hair Movie was Easy to Be Hard. I also enjoyed the cheesy horror movie with Treat called Deep Rising.

Treat was very attractive. Was that his hair in the first picture? I don't remember his hair ever being long like that.
In the 70s, that hair was normal but the beards were not as ugly as the beards are now. The neck beards now are just disgusting.

When I Was young, my dad worked in what is now the Viacom building (back then it was the Minskoff Building) and knew all the Broadway producers. So I ended up seeing a lot of big musicals from backstage. The one I remember the most was The Pirates of Penzance, where Treat played the Pirate King and Robby Benson was Frederic. I met both but Treat was the one who made me realize I was a little homo. My god, the guy was so fucking sexy. Even more so in Smooth Talk. I SO wanted to be Laura Dern in that movie. HA
